Magnetic field tuning of modulated magnetic orders in CrOCl at the two-dimensional limit

Chromium oxychloride is a van der Waals magnet with intrinsic competing exchange interactions, including a strong antiferromagnetic one, source of a very rich magnetic phase diagram, with ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and canted states, up to high magnetic fields. We investigate the sequence of these magnetic phases in thin layers of CrOCl using magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We identify phases whose magnetic order is commensurate with the atomic lattice, and find signatures of strong magneto-striction, presumably of exchange origin. The coupling of the spin and atomic degrees of freedom in the crystal is observed down to the single-layer limit -- phonon modes significantly soften or stiffen, in a complex way due to the competition of interactions. The existence domains of the different phases change with the number of layers.

Measuring the surface stress polar dependence

While measurements of the polar dependence of the surface free energy are easily available, measurements of the whole polar dependence of the surface stress of a crystal do not exist. In this paper is presented a new procedure that allows, for the first time, the experimental determination of the surface stress polar dependence of a crystal. For this purpose (1) electromigration is used to control the kinetic faceting of surface orientations that belong to the equilibrium shape of the crystal and (2) for each destabilised surface, the period of faceting as well as the crystallographic angles of the appearing facets are measured by AFM. The so-obtained data lead to a set of equations whose mathematical solution, compatible with physical constraints, gives access to the surface stress polar dependence of the whole crystal and thus to a better understanding of surface stress properties.

Different wavelength oscillations in the conductance of 5d metal atomic chains

Combining ab-initio and self-consistent parametrized tight-binding calculations we analyze the conductance properties of atomic chains of 5d elements like Au, Pt and Ir. It is shown that, in addition to the even-odd parity oscillations characteristic of Au, conduction channels associated with the almost full d bands in Pt and Ir give rise to longer periods which could be observed in sufficiently long chains. The results for short chains are in good agreement with recent experimental measurements.

Charge redistribution at Pd surfaces: ab initio grounds for tight-binding interatomic potentials

A simplified tight-binding description of the electronic structure is often necessary for complex studies of surfaces of transition metal compounds. This requires a self-consistent parametrization of the charge redistribution, which is not obvious for late transition series elements (such as Pd, Cu, Au), for which not only d but also s-p electrons have to be taken into account. We show here, with the help of an ab initio FP-LMTO approach, that for these elements the electronic charge is unchanged from bulk to the surface, not only per site but also per orbital. This implies different level shifts for each orbital in order to achieve this orbital neutrality rule. Our results invalidate any neutrality rule which would allow charge redistribution between orbitals to ensure a common rigid shift for all of them. Moreover, in the case of Pd, the power law which governs the variation of band energy with respect to coordination number, is found to differ significantly from the usual tight-binding square root.
