The Pencil Code, a modular MPI code for partial differential equations and particles: multipurpose and multiuser-maintained

The Pencil Code is a highly modular physics-oriented simulation code that can be adapted to a wide range of applications. It is primarily designed to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) of compressible hydrodynamics and has lots of add-ons ranging from astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to meteorological cloud microphysics and engineering applications in combustion. Nevertheless, the framework is general and can also be applied to situations not related to hydrodynamics or even PDEs, for example when just the message passing interface or input/output strategies of the code are to be used. The code can also evolve Lagrangian (inertial and noninertial) particles, their coagulation and condensation, as well as their interaction with the fluid.

Strain Wave Pathway to Semiconductor-to-Metal Transition revealed by time resolved X-ray powder diffraction

Thanks to the remarkable developments of ultrafast science, one of today's challenges is to modify material state by controlling with a light pulse the coherent motions that connect two different phases. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a macroscopic transformation pathway for the semiconducting-to-metal transition with large volume change in bistable Ti$_3$O$_5$ nanocrystals. Femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction allowed us to quantify the structural deformations associated with the photoinduced phase transition on relevant time scales. We monitored the early intra-cell distortions around absorbing metal dimers, but also long range crystalline deformations dynamically governed by acoustic waves launched at the laser-exposed Ti$_3$O$_5$ surface. We rationalize these observations with a simplified elastic model, demonstrating that a macroscopic transformation occurs concomitantly with the propagating acoustic wavefront on the picosecond timescale, several decades earlier than the subsequent thermal processes governed by heat diffusion.

Two-Color QCD with Chiral Chemical Potential

The phase diagram of two-color QCD with a chiral chemical potential is studied on the lattice. The focus is on the confinement/deconfinement phase transition and the breaking/restoration of chiral symmetry. The simulations are carried out with dynamical staggered fermions without rooting. The dependence of the Polyakov loop, the chiral condensate and the corresponding susceptibilities on the chiral chemical potential and the temperature are presented.

Magnetic catalysis (and inverse catalysis) at finite temperature in two-color lattice QCD

Two-color lattice QCD with N_f=4 staggered fermion degrees of freedom (no rooting trick is applied) with equal electric charge q is studied in a homogeneous magnetic background field B and at non-zero temperature T. In order to circumvent renormalization as a function of the bare coupling we apply a fixed-scale approach. We study the influence of the magnetic field on the critical temperature. At rather small pseudo-scalar meson mass ($m_π \approx 175 \mathrm{MeV} \approx T_c(B=0)$) we confirm a monotonic rise of the quark condensate $<\barψ ψ>$ with increasing magnetic field strength, i.e. magnetic catalysis, as long as one is staying within the confinement or deconfinement phase. In the transition region we find indications for a non-monotonic behavior of $T_c(B)$ at low magnetic field strength ($qB<0.8 \mathrm{GeV}^2$) and a clear rise at stronger magnetic field. The conjectured existence of a minimum value $T_c(B^{*}) < T_c(B=0)$ would leave a temperature window for a decrease of $<\barψ ψ>$ with rising $B$ (inverse magnetic catalysis) also in the present model.

Two-colour QCD at non-zero temperature in the presence of a strong magnetic field

In this talk we report on our study of two-colour lattice QCD with N_f=4 staggered fermion degrees of freedom with equal electric charge q in a homogeneous magnetic field B at non-zero temperature T. We find indications for a non-monotonic behaviour of the critical temperature as a function of the magnetic field strength and, as a consequence, for the occurence of `inverse magnetic catalysis' within the transition region for magnetic fields in the range 0 < qB < 0.7 GeV^2.

Two-color QCD with staggered fermions at finite temperature under the influence of a magnetic field

In this paper we investigate the influence of a constant external magnetic field on the finite-temperature phase structure and the chiral properties of a simplified lattice model for QCD. We assume an SU(2) gauge symmetry and employ dynamical staggered fermions of identical mass without rooting, corresponding to Nf=4 flavors of identical electric charge. For fixed mass (given in lattice units) the critical temperature is seen to rise with the magnetic field strength. For three fixed beta-values, selected such that we stay (i) within the chirally broken phase, (ii) within the transition region or (iii) within the chirally restored phase, we study the approach to the chiral limit for various values of the magnetic field. Within the chirally broken (confinement) phase the chiral condensate is found to increase monotonically with a growing magnetic field strength. In the chiral limit the increase starts linear in agreement with a chiral model studied by Shushpanov and Smilga. Within the chirally restored (deconfinement) phase the chiral condensate tends to zero in the chiral limit, irrespective of the strength of the magnetic field.

Decoherence and disorder in quantum walks: From ballistic spread to localization

We investigate the impact of decoherence and static disorder on the dynamics of quantum particles moving in a periodic lattice. Our experiment relies on the photonic implementation of a one-dimensional quantum walk. The pure quantum evolution is characterized by a ballistic spread of a photon's wave packet along 28 steps. By applying controlled time-dependent operations we simulate three different environmental influences on the system, resulting in a fast ballistic spread, a diffusive classical walk and the first Anderson localization in a discrete quantum walk architecture.

Photons Walking the Line: A quantum walk with adjustable coin operations

We present the first robust implementation of a coined quantum walk over five steps using only passive optical elements. By employing a fiber network loop we keep the amount of required resources constant as the walker's position Hilbert space is increased. We observed a non-Gaussian distribution of the walker's final position, thus characterizing a faster spread of the photon wave-packet in comparison to the classical random walk. The walk is realized for many different coin settings and initial states, which opens the way for the implementation of a quantum walk-based search algorithm.
