Lobby index in networks

We propose a new node centrality measure in networks, the lobby index, which is inspired by Hirsch's h-index. It is shown that in scale free networks the l-index has power tail with exponent square of the exponent of the degree distribution one. Properties of the l-index and extensions are discussed.

Networks in life: Scaling properties and eigenvalue spectra

We analyse growing networks ranging from collaboration graphs of scientists to the network of similarities defined among the various transcriptional profiles of living cells. For the explicit demonstration of the scale-free nature and hierarchical organization of these graphs, a deterministic construction is also used. We demonstrate the use of determining the eigenvalue spectra of sparse random graph models for the categorization of small measured networks.

Evolution of the social network of scientific collaborations

The co-authorship network of scientists represents a prototype of complex evolving networks. By mapping the electronic database containing all relevant journals in mathematics and neuro-science for an eight-year period (1991-98), we infer the dynamic and the structural mechanisms that govern the evolution and topology of this complex system. First, empirical measurements allow us to uncover the topological measures that characterize the network at a given moment, as well as the time evolution of these quantities. The results indicate that the network is scale-free, and that the network evolution is governed by preferential attachment, affecting both internal and external links. However, in contrast with most model predictions the average degree increases in time, and the node separation decreases. Second, we propose a simple model that captures the network's time evolution. Third, numerical simulations are used to uncover the behavior of quantities that could not be predicted analytically.

Elliptic flow of $η$ and $π^{0}$ Mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2 AGeV

Azimuthal distributions of $η$ and $π^{0}$ mesons emitted at midrapidity in collisions of 1.9 AGeV $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and 2 AGeV $^{40}$Ca+$^{nat}$Ca are studied as a function of the number of projectile-like spectator nucleons. The observed anisotropy corresponds to a negative elliptic flow signal for $η$ mesons, indicating a preferred emission perpendicular to the reaction plane. In contrast, only small azimuthal anisotropies are observed for $π^{0}$ mesons. This may indicate that $η$ mesons freeze out earlier from the fire ball than pions.

Azimuthal Anisotropy of $η$ and $π^{0}$ Mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2 AGeV

The effect is smallest in peripheral Ni+Ni collisions. In contrast, for $π^{0}$ mesons, elliptic flow is observed only in peripheral Ni+Ni collisions, changing from positive to negative sign with increasing pion transverse momentum.
