Neutron matter at finite temperature

We calculate the neutron matter equation of state at finite temperature based on low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions. The free energy is obtained from a loop expansion around the Hartree-Fock energy, including contributions from normal and anomalous diagrams. We focus on densities below saturation density with temperatures T <= 10 MeV and compare our results to the model-independent virial equation of state and to variational calculations. Good agreement with the virial equation of state is found at low density. We provide simple estimates for the theoretical error, important for extrapolations to astrophysical conditions.

Coupled-cluster theory for three-body Hamiltonians

We derive coupled-cluster equations for three-body Hamiltonians. The equations for the one- and two-body cluster amplitudes are presented in a factorized form that leads to an efficient numerical implementation. We employ low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions and calculate the binding energy of He-4. The results show that the main contribution of the three-nucleon interaction stems from its density-dependent zero-, one-, and two-body terms that result from the normal ordering of the Hamiltonian in coupled-cluster theory. The residual three-body terms that remain after normal ordering can be neglected.

Comment on "Ab Initio study of 40-Ca with an importance-truncated no-core shell model"

In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 092501 (2007)], Roth and Navratil present an importance-truncation scheme for the no-core shell model. The authors claim that their truncation scheme leads to converged results for the ground state of 40-Ca. We believe that this conclusion cannot be drawn from the results presented in the Letter. Furthermore, the claimed convergence is at variance with expectations of many-body theory. In particular, coupled-cluster calculations indicate that a significant fraction of the correlation energy is missing.

Resonant relativistic corrections and the A_y problem

We study relativistic corrections to nuclear interactions caused by boosting the two-nucleon interaction to a frame in which their total momentum does not vanish. These corrections induce a change in the computed value of the neutron-deuteron analyzing power A_y that is estimated using the plane-wave impulse approximation. This allows a transparent analytical calculation that demonstrates the significance of relativistic corrections. Faddeev calculations are however needed to conclude on the A_y puzzle.

Benchmark calculations for 3H, 4He, 16O and 40Ca with ab-initio coupled-cluster theory

We present ab-initio calculations for 3H, 4He, 16O, and 40Ca based on two-nucleon low-momentum interactions Vlowk within coupled-cluster theory. For 3H and 4He, our results are within 70 keV and 10 keV of the corresponding Faddeev and Faddeev-Yakubovsky energies. We study in detail the convergence with respect to the size of the model space and the single-particle basis. For the heavier nuclei, we report practically converged binding energies and compare with other approaches.

Are low-energy nuclear observables sensitive to high-energy phase shifts?

Conventional nucleon-nucleon potentials with strong short-range repulsion require contributions from high-momentum wave function components even for low-energy observables such as the deuteron binding energy. This can lead to the misconception that reproducing high-energy phase shifts is important for such observables. Interactions derived via the similarity renormalization group decouple high-energy and low-energy physics while preserving the phase shifts from the starting potential. They are used to show that high-momentum components (and high-energy phase shifts) can be set to zero when using low-momentum interactions, without losing information relevant for low-energy observables.

Neutrino Breakup of A=3 Nuclei in Supernovae

We extend the virial equation of state to include 3H and 3He nuclei, and predict significant mass-three fractions near the neutrinosphere in supernovae. While alpha particles are often more abundant, we demonstrate that energy transfer cross-sections for muon and tau neutrinos at low densities are dominated by breakup of the loosely-bound 3H and 3He nuclei. The virial coefficients involving A=3 nuclei are calculated directly from the corresponding nucleon-3H and nucleon-3He scattering phase shifts. For the neutral-current inelastic cross-sections and the energy transfer cross sections, we perform ab-initio calculations based on microscopic two- and three-nucleon interactions and meson-exchange currents.

Dependence of the BCS 1S0 superfluid pairing gap on nuclear interactions

We study in detail the dependence of the 1S0 superfluid pairing gap on nuclear interactions and on charge-independence breaking at the BCS level. Starting from chiral effective-field theory and conventional nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions, we use the renormalization group to generate low-momentum interactions V_{low k} with sharp and smooth regulators. The resulting BCS gaps are well constrained by the NN scattering phase shifts, and the cutoff dependence is very weak for sharp or sufficiently narrow smooth regulators with cutoffs Lambda > 1.6 fm^{-1}. It is therefore likely that the effect of three-nucleon interactions on 1S0 superfluidity is small at the BCS level. The charge dependence of nuclear interactions has a 10% effect on the pairing gap.

Three-fermion problems in optical lattices

We present exact results for the spectra of three fermionic atoms in a single well of an optical lattice. For the three lowest hyperfine states of Li6 atoms, we find a Borromean state across the region of the distinct pairwise Feshbach resonances. For K40 atoms, nearby Feshbach resonances are known for two of the pairs, and a bound three-body state develops towards the positive scattering-length side. In addition, we study the sensitivity of our results to atomic details. The predicted few-body phenomena can be realized in optical lattices in the limit of low tunneling.

The neutron matter equation of state from low-momentum interactions

We calculate the neutron matter equation of state at finite temperature based on low-momentum nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions. Shell-model phenomenology of low-momentum interactions

The first detailed comparison of the low-momentum interaction V_{low k} with G matrices is presented. We use overlaps to measure quantitatively the similarity of shell-model matrix elements for different cutoffs and oscillator frequencies. Over a wide range, all sets of V_{low k} matrix elements can be approximately obtained from a universal set by a simple scaling. In an oscillator mean-field approach, V_{low k} reproduces satisfactorily many features of the single-particle and single-hole spectra on closed-shell nuclei, in particular through remarkably good splittings between spin-orbit partners on top of harmonic oscillator closures. The main deficiencies of pure two-nucleon interactions are associated with binding energies and with the failure to ensure magicity for the extruder-intruder closures. Here, calculations including three-nucleon interactions are most needed. V_{low k} makes it possible to define directly a meaningful unperturbed monopole Hamiltonian, for which the inclusion of three-nucleon forces is tractable.

The Neutrino Response of Low-Density Neutron Matter from the Virial Expansion

We generalize our virial approach to study spin-polarized neutron matter and the consistent neutrino response at low densities. In the long-wavelength limit, the virial expansion makes model-independent predictions for the density and spin response, based only on nucleon-nucleon scattering data. Our results for the neutrino response provide constraints for random-phase approximation or other model calculations, and we compare the virial vector and axial response to response functions used in supernova simulations. The virial expansion is suitable to describe matter near the supernova neutrinosphere, and this work extends the virial equation of state to predict neutrino interactions in neutron matter.

Low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs

Nucleon-nucleon potentials evolved to low momentum, which show great promise in few- and many-body calculations, have generally been formulated with a sharp cutoff on relative momenta. However, a sharp cutoff has technical disadvantages and can cause convergence problems at the 10-100 keV level in the deuteron and triton. This motivates using smooth momentum-space regulators as an alternative. We generate low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs both through energy-independent renormalization group methods and using a multi-step process based on the Bloch-Horowitz approach. We find greatly improved convergence for calculations of the deuteron and triton binding energies in a harmonic oscillator basis compared to results with a sharp cutoff. Even a slight evolution of chiral effective field theory interactions to lower momenta is beneficial. The renormalization group preserves the long-range part of the interaction, and consequently the renormalization of long-range operators, such as the quadrupole moment, the radius and 1/r, is small. This demonstrates that low-energy observables in the deuteron are reproduced without short-range correlations in the wave function.

Cluster Formation and The Virial Equation of State of Low-Density Nuclear Matter

We present the virial equation of state of low-density nuclear matter composed of neutrons, protons and alpha particles. The virial equation of state is model-independent, and therefore sets a benchmark for all nuclear equations of state at low densities. We calculate the second virial coefficients for nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-alpha and alpha-alpha interactions directly from the relevant binding energies and scattering phase shifts. The virial approach systematically takes into account contributions from bound nuclei and the resonant continuum, and consequently provides a framework to include strong-interaction corrections to nuclear statistical equilibrium models. The virial coefficients are used to make model-independent predictions for a variety of properties of nuclear matter over a range of densities, temperatures and compositions. Our results provide constraints on the physics of the neutrinosphere in supernovae. The resulting alpha particle concentration differs from all equations of state currently used in supernova simulations. Finally, the virial equation of state greatly improves our conceptual understanding of low-density nuclear matter.

Convergence of the Born Series with Low-Momentum Interactions

The nonperturbative nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions as a function of a momentum cutoff is studied using Weinberg eigenvalues as a diagnostic. This investigation extends an earlier study of the perturbative convergence of the Born series to partial waves beyond the 3S1-3D1 channel and to positive energies. As the cutoff is lowered using renormalization-group or model-space techniques, the evolution of nonperturbative features at large cutoffs from strong short-range repulsion and the iterated tensor interaction are monitored via the complex Weinberg eigenvalues. When all eigenvalues lie within the unit circle, the expansion of the scattering amplitude in terms of the interaction is perturbative, with the magnitude of the largest eigenvalue setting the rate of convergence. Major decreases in the magnitudes of repulsive eigenvalues are observed as the Argonne v18, CD-Bonn or Nijmegen potentials are evolved to low momentum, even though two-body observables are unchanged. For chiral EFT potentials, running the cutoff lower tames the impact of the tensor force and of new nonperturbative features entering at N3LO. The efficacy of separable approximations to nuclear interactions derived from the Weinberg analysis is studied as a function of cutoff, and the connection to inverse scattering is demonstrated.

The Virial Equation of State of Low-Density Neutron Matter

We present a model-independent description of low-density neutron matter based on the virial expansion. The virial equation of state provides a benchmark for all nuclear equations of state at densities and temperatures where the interparticle separation is large compared to the thermal wavelength. We calculate the second virial coefficient directly from the nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts. Our results for the pressure, energy, entropy and the free energy correctly include the physics of the large neutron-neutron scattering length. We find that, as in the universal regime, thermodynamic properties of neutron matter scale over a wide range of temperatures, but with a significantly reduced interaction coefficient compared to the unitary limit.
