Three-body forces: From cold atoms to nuclei

It is often assumed that few- and many-body systems can be accurately described by considering only pairwise two-body interactions of the constituents. We illustrate that three- and higher-body forces enter naturally in effective field theories and are especially prominent in strongly interacting quantum systems. We focus on three-body forces and discuss examples from atomic and nuclear physics. In particular, we highlight the importance and the challenges of three-nucleon forces for nuclear structure and reactions, including applications to astrophysics and fundamental symmetries.

Neutron matter at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

Neutron matter presents a unique system for chiral effective field theory (EFT), because all many-body forces among neutrons are predicted to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). We present the first complete N3LO calculation of the neutron matter energy. This includes the subleading three-nucleon (3N) forces for the first time and all leading four-nucleon (4N) forces. We find relatively large contributions from N3LO 3N forces. Our results provide constraints for neutron-rich matter in astrophysics with controlled theoretical uncertainties.

Three-body forces and proton-rich nuclei

We present the first study of three-nucleon (3N) forces for proton-rich nuclei along the N=8 and N=20 isotones. Our results for the ground-state energies and proton separation energies are in very good agreement with experiment where available, and with the empirical isobaric multiplet mass equation. We predict the spectra for all N=8 and N=20 isotones to the proton dripline, which agree well with experiment for 18Ne, 19Na, 20Mg and 42Ti. In all other cases, we provide first predictions based on nuclear forces. Our results are also very promising for studying isospin symmetry breaking in medium-mass nuclei based on chiral effective field theory.

In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group with Chiral Two- Plus Three-Nucleon Interactions

We use the recently proposed In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IM-SRG) to carry out a systematic study of closed-shell nuclei up to $\nuc{Ni}{56}$, based on chiral two- plus three-nucleon interactions. We analyze the capabilities of the IM-SRG by comparing our results for the ground-state energy to Coupled Cluster calculations, as well as to quasi-exact results from the Importance-Truncated No-Core Shell Model. Using chiral two- plus three-nucleon Hamiltonians whose resolution scales are lowered by free-space SRG evolution, we obtain good agreement with experimental binding energies in $\nuc{He}{4}$ and the closed-shell oxygen isotopes, while the calcium and nickel isotopes are somewhat overbound.

Spin-dependent WIMP scattering off nuclei

Chiral effective field theory (EFT) provides a systematic expansion for the coupling of WIMPs to nucleons at the momentum transfers relevant to direct cold dark matter detection. We derive the currents for spin-dependent WIMP scattering off nuclei at the one-body level and include the leading long-range two-body currents, which are predicted in chiral EFT. As an application, we calculate the structure factor for spin-dependent WIMP scattering off 129,131Xe nuclei, using nuclear interactions that have been developed to study nuclear structure and double-beta decays in this region. We provide theoretical error bands due to the nuclear uncertainties of WIMP currents in nuclei.

Matter and charge radius of 6He in the hyperspherical-harmonics approach

We present ab-initio calculations of the binding energy and radii of the two-neutron halo nucleus 6He using two-body low-momentum interactions based on chiral effective field theory potentials. Calculations are performed via a hyperspherical harmonics expansion where the convergence is sped up introducing an effective interaction for non-local potentials. The latter is essential to reach a satisfactory convergence of the extended matter radius and of the point-proton radius. The dependence of the results on the resolution scale is studied. A correlation is found between the radii and the two-neutron separation energy. The importance of three-nucleon forces is pointed out comparing our results and previous calculations to experiment.

Neutrino processes in partially degenerate neutron matter

We investigate neutrino processes for conditions reached in simulations of core-collapse supernovae. Where neutrino-matter interactions play an important role, matter is partially degenerate, and we extend earlier work that addressed the degenerate regime. We derive expressions for the spin structure factor in neutron matter, which is a key quantity required for evaluating rates of neutrino processes. We show that, for essentially all conditions encountered in the post-bounce phase of core-collapse supernovae, it is a very good approximation to calculate the spin relaxation rates in the nondegenerate limit. We calculate spin relaxation rates based on chiral effective field theory interactions and find that they are typically a factor of two smaller than those obtained using the standard one-pion-exchange interaction alone.

Equation-of-state dependence of the gravitational-wave signal from the ring-down phase of neutron-star mergers

Neutron-star (NS) merger simulations are conducted for 38 representative microphysical descriptions of high-density matter in order to explore the equation-of-state dependence of the postmerger ring-down phase. The formation of a deformed, oscillating, differentially rotating very massive NS is the typical outcome of the coalescence of two stars with 1.35 $M_{\odot}$ for most candidate EoSs. The oscillations of this object imprint a pronounced peak in the gravitational-wave (GW) spectra, which is used to characterize the emission for a given model. The peak frequency of this postmerger GW signal correlates very well with the radii of nonrotating NSs, and thus allows to constrain the high-density EoS by a GW detection. In the case of 1.35-1.35 $M_{\odot}$ mergers the peak frequency scales particularly well with the radius of a NS with 1.6 $M_{\odot}$, where the maximum deviation from this correlation is only 60 meters for fully microphysical EoSs which are compatible with NS observations. Combined with the uncertainty in the determination of the peak frequency it appears likely that a GW detection can measure the radius of a 1.6 $M_{\odot}$ NS with an accuracy of about 100 to 200 meters. We also uncover relations of the peak frequency with the radii of nonrotating NSs with 1.35 $M_{\odot}$ or 1.8 $M_{\odot}$, with the radius or the central energy density of the maximum-mass Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff configuration, and with the pressure or sound speed at a fiducial rest-mass density of about twice nuclear saturation density. Furthermore, it is found that a determination of the dominant postmerger GW frequency can provide an upper limit for the maximum mass of nonrotating NSs. The prospects for a detection of the postmerger GW signal and a determination of the dominant GW frequency are estimated to be in the range of 0.015 to 1.2 events per year with the upcoming Advanced LIGO detector.

New precision mass measurements of neutron-rich calcium and potassium isotopes and three-nucleon forces

We present precision Penning-trap mass measurements of neutron-rich calcium and potassium isotopes in the vicinity of neutron number N=32. Using the TITAN system the mass of $^{51}$K was measured for the first time, and the precision of the $^{51,52}$Ca mass values were improved significantly. The new mass values show a dramatic increase of the binding energy compared to those reported in the atomic mass evaluation. In particular, $^{52}$Ca is more bound by 1.74 MeV, and the behavior with neutron number deviates substantially from the tabulated values. An increased binding was predicted recently based on calculations that include three-nucleon (3N) forces. We present a comparison to improved calculations, which agree remarkably with the evolution of masses with neutron number, making neutron-rich calcium isotopes an exciting region to probe 3N forces at neutron-rich extremes.

In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group for Open-Shell Nuclei

We present a nonperturbative derivation of effective valence-shell Hamiltonians in the framework of the recently developed in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG). As a first application, we calculate the spectra of $p$- and $sd$-shell nuclei, $^6$Li and $^{18}$O, based on evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions. For $^6$Li, the spectrum is in very good agreement with ab-initio results. For $^{18}$O, the IM-SRG provides a new method for the shell model to systematically go beyond effective interaction techniques based on diagrammatic expansions.

First direct mass-measurement of the two-neutron halo nucleus 6He and improved mass for the four-neutron halo 8He

The first direct mass-measurement of $^{6}$He has been performed with the TITAN Penning trap mass spectrometer at the ISAC facility. In addition, the mass of $^{8}$He was determined with improved precision over our previous measurement. The obtained masses are $m$($^{6}$He) = 6.018 885 883(57) u and $m$($^{8}$He) = 8.033 934 44(11) u. The $^{6}$He value shows a deviation from the literature of 4$σ$. With these new mass values and the previously measured atomic isotope shifts we obtain charge radii of 2.060(8) fm and 1.959(16) fm for $^{6}$He and $^{8}$He respectively. We present a detailed comparison to nuclear theory for $^6$He, including new hyperspherical harmonics results. A correlation plot of the point-proton radius with the two-neutron separation energy demonstrates clearly the importance of three-nucleon forces.

Chiral two-body currents in nuclei: Gamow-Teller transitions and neutrinoless double-beta decay

We show that chiral effective field theory (EFT) two-body currents provide important contributions to the quenching of low-momentum-transfer Gamow-Teller transitions, and use chiral EFT to predict the momentum-transfer dependence that is probed in neutrinoless double-beta decay. We then calculate for the first time the neutrinoless double-beta decay operator based on chiral EFT currents and study the nuclear matrix elements at successive orders. The contributions from chiral two-body currents are significant and should be included in all calculations.

In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group for Nuclei

We present a new ab-initio method that uses similarity renormalization group (SRG) techniques to continuously diagonalize nuclear many-body Hamiltonians. In contrast with applications of the SRG to two- and three-nucleon interactions in free space, we perform the SRG evolution "in medium" directly in the $A$-body system of interest. The in-medium approach has the advantage that one can approximately evolve $3,...,A$-body operators using only two-body machinery based on normal-ordering techniques. The method is nonperturbative and can be tailored to problems ranging from the diagonalization of closed-shell nuclei to the construction of effective valence shell-model Hamiltonians and operators. We present first results for the ground-state energies of $^4$He, $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca, which have accuracies comparable to coupled-cluster calculations.

Improved nuclear matter calculations from chiral low-momentum interactions

We present new nuclear matter calculations based on low-momentum interactions derived from chiral effective field theory potentials. The current calculations use an improved treatment of the three-nucleon force contribution that includes a corrected combinatorial factor beyond Hartree-Fock that was omitted in previous nuclear matter calculations. We find realistic saturation properties using parameters fit only to few-body data, but with larger uncertainty estimates from cutoff dependence and the 3NF parametrization than in previous calculations.

Three-body interactions in Fermi systems

We show that the contributions of three-quasiparticle interactions to normal Fermi systems at low energies and temperatures are suppressed by n_q/n compared to two-body interactions, where n_q is the density of excited or added quasiparticles and n is the ground-state density. For finite Fermi systems, three-quasiparticle contributions are suppressed by the corresponding ratio of particle numbers N_q/N. This is illustrated for polarons in strongly interacting spin-polarized Fermi gases and for valence neutrons in neutron-rich calcium isotopes.

Constraints on neutron star radii based on chiral effective field theory interactions

We show that microscopic calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter below nuclear densities to a much higher degree than is reflected in commonly used equations of state. Combined with observed neutron star masses, our results lead to a radius R = 9.7 - 13.9 km for a 1.4 M_{solar} star, where the theoretical range is due, in about equal amounts, to uncertainties in many-body forces and to the extrapolation to high densities.

Chiral three-nucleon forces and neutron matter

We calculate the properties of neutron matter and highlight the physics of chiral three-nucleon forces. For neutrons, only the long-range 2 pi-exchange interactions of the leading chiral three-nucleon forces contribute, and we derive density-dependent two-body interactions by summing the third particle over occupied states in the Fermi sea. Our results for the energy suggest that neutron matter is perturbative at nuclear densities. We study in detail the theoretical uncertainties of the neutron matter energy, provide constraints for the symmetry energy and its density dependence, and explore the impact of chiral three-nucleon forces on the S-wave superfluid pairing gap.
