Thermodynamic Limit in the Two-qubit Quantum Rabi Model with Spin-Spin Coupling

The occurrence of a second-order superradiant quantum phase transition is brought to light in a quantum system consisting of two interacting qubits coupled to the same quantized field mode. We introduce an appropriate thermodynamic-like limit for the integrable two-qubit quantum Rabi model with spin-spin interaction. Namely, it is determined by the infinite ratios of the spin-spin and the spin-mode couplings to the mode frequency, regardless of the spin-to-mode frequency ratios.

Characterisation of signal-induced noise in Hamamatsu R11265 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes

Signal-induced noise is observed in Hamamatsu R11265 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes, manifesting up to several microseconds after the single photoelectron response signal and localised in specific anodes. The mean number of noise pulses varies between devices, and shows significant dependence on the applied high-voltage. The characterisation of this noise and the mitigation strategies to perform optimal single-photon counting at 40 MHz, as required by the LHCb Ring-Imaging Cherenkov detectors, are reported.

Two-qubit entanglement generation through non-Hermitian Hamiltonians induced by repeated measurements on an ancilla

In contrast to classical systems, actual implementation of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian dynamics for quantum systems is a challenge because the processes of energy gain and dissipation are based on the underlying Hermitian system-environment dynamics that is trace preserving. Recently, a scheme for engineering non-Hermitian Hamiltonians as a result of repetitive measurements on an anicillary qubit has been proposed. The induced conditional dynamics of the main system is described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian arisng from the procedure. In this paper we demonstrate the effectiveness of such a protocol by applying it to physically relevant multi-spin models, showing that the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian drives the system to a maximally entangled stationary state. In addition, we report a new recipe to construct a physical scenario where the quantum dynamics of a physical system represented by a given non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model may be simulated. The physical implications and the broad scope potential applications of such a scheme are highlighted.

Light Detection System and Time Resolution of the NA62 RICH

A large RICH detector is used in NA62 to suppress the muon contamination in the charged pion sample by a factor of 100 in the momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c. Cherenkov light is collected by 1952 photomultipliers placed at the upstream end. In this paper the characterization of the photomultipliers and the dedicated Frontend and Data Acquisition electronics are described, the time resolution and the light detection efficiency measurement are presented.

Prospects for Measurements with Strange Hadrons at LHCb

This report details the capabilities of LHCb and its upgrades towards the study of kaons and hyperons. The analyses performed so far are reviewed, elaborating on the prospects for some key decay channels, while proposing some new measurements in LHCb to expand its strangeness research program.

Clusterization of weakly-interacting bosons in one dimension: an analytic study at zero temperature

We study a system of penetrable bosons on a line, focusing on the high-density/weak-interaction regime, where the ground state is, to a good approximation, a condensate. Under compression, the system clusterizes at zero temperature, i.e., particles gather together in separate, equally populated bunches. We compare predictions from the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with those of two distinct variational approximations of the single-particle state, written as either a sum of Gaussians or the square root of it. Not only the wave functions in the three theories are similar, but also the phase-transition density is the same for all. In particular, clusterization occurs together with the softening of roton excitations in GP theory. Compared to the latter theory, Gaussian variational theory has the advantage that the mean-field energy functional is written in (almost) closed form, which enables us to extract the phase-transition and high-density behaviors in fully analytic terms. We also compute the superfluid fraction of the clustered system, uncovering its exact behavior close, as well as very far away from, the transition.

An orientable time of flight detector for cosmic rays

Cosmic ray studies, in particular UHECR, can be in general supported by a directional, easy deployable, simple and robust detector. The design of this detector is based on the time of flight between two parallel tiles of scintillator, to distinguish particle passing through in opposite directions; by fine time resolution and pretty adjustable acceptance it is possible to select upward(left)/downward(right) cosmic rays. It has been developed for an array of detectors to measure upward $τ$ from Earth-Skimming neutrino events with energy above $10^8 GeV$. The properties and performances of the detector are discussed. Test results from a high noise environment are presented.

Crown Detectors to Observe Horizontal and Upward Air-Showers

Cerenkov Telescopes and Scintillators set on a Crown-like arrays facing the Horizons may reveal far Cosmic Rays Showers, nearer Anti-Neutrino-Electron + Electron --> W- shower in air and upgoing Tau Neutrino + N--> tau + X, --> Shower, Earth-Skimming tau air-showers. Even UHE SUSY Chi + e--> Selectron--> Chi + e at tens PeVs-EeV energy may blaze at Horizons, as anti-neutrino electron at Glashow peak - Burst shower. We show first estimate on down and up-going Horizontal Showers traces for present and future Magic-like Crown Arrays and their correlated Scintillator-like twin Crown Arrays. The one mono or stereo-Magic elements facing the Horizons are already comparable to present Amanda underground neutrino detector.

Study of a detector array for Upward Tau Air-Showers

The cosmic ray spectrum extends to energies above 10^20 eV. In direct production or acceleration models, as well as by photo-pion interaction high energy cosmic ray flux must contain neutrinos and photons. The latter are absorbed by cosmic radiations while neutrinos are not. The need of a Neutrino Astronomy is compelling. In this paper a study of a detector array designed to measure horizontal tau air-showers emerging from the ground, produced by nu_tau interactions with the Earth's crust, is presented. Each array unit is composed of a pair of scintillator tiles mounted on a frame with a front field of view of about 0.1 sr, optimized to distinguish between up-going and down-going crossing particles by their time of flight. The detector array sensitivity, the size of the array and the tau shower identification are discussed. Because of the almost complete mixing of nu_mu to nu_tau the ultrahigh energy neutrino tau and its minimal consequent tau-airshower rate is estimated; assuming that the neutrino energy spectrum follows a Fermi-like power law E^-2, the sensitivity with 3 years of observation is estimated to be about 60 eV cm^-2s^-1sr^-1 in the energy range 10^{17-20} eV. This value would provide competitive upper limit with present and future experiments. We found also that, in the same time, this system can observe about one GZK neutrino event per km^2.

Test results of a prototype designed to detect horizontal cosmic ray flux

In this paper we report test results from a prototype designed to detect muons from horizontal air shower at large zenith angle, $86^{0}<Θ<93^{0}$. To detect horizontal tracks and their directions we select them according the muon vertical equivalent charge and we measure the time of flight with a time resolution of 800 ps. Several measurements are collected at different zenith angles. The background studies performed with two modules show that the main source is due to tracks crossing the module at the same time. The upper limit of background flux for a single twin module is estimated to be $10^{-9} cm^{-2}$ $s^{-1}$ $sr^{-1} (90%CL)$. We estimated the size of the surface array necessary to detect the shower flux of the order of $10^{-9} cm^{-2}$ $yr^{-1}$ $sr^{-1}$ if originated by Tau Air-Showers secondaries of GZK neutrino Tau below the horizons.
