Intel Stratix 10 FPGA design for track reconstruction for the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC

The fast reconstruction of charged particle tracks with high efficiency and track quality is an essential part of the online data selection for the ATLAS experiment at the High-Luminosity LHC. Dedicated custom designed hardware boards and software simulations have been developed to assess the feasibility of a Hardware Tracking Trigger (HTT) system. The Pattern Recognition Mezzanine (PRM), as part of the HTT system, has been designed to recognize track candidates in silicon detectors with Associative Memory ASICs and to select and reconstruct tracks using linearized algorithms implemented in an Intel Stratix 10 MX FPGA. The highly parallelized FPGA design makes extensive use of the integrated High-Bandwidth-Memory. In this paper, the FPGA design for the PRM board is presented. Its functionalities have been verified in both simulations and hardware tests on an Intel Stratix 10 MX development kit.

Searches for Long-Lived Particles at the Future FCC-ee

The electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee, is a frontier factory for Higgs, top, electroweak, and flavour physics. It is designed to operate in a 100 km circular tunnel built at CERN, and will serve as the first step towards $\geq$ 100 TeV proton-proton collisions. In addition to an essential and unique Higgs program, it offers powerful opportunities to discover direct or indirect evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Direct searches for long-lived particles at FCC-ee could be particularly fertile in the high-luminosity $Z$ run, where $5\times 10^{12}$ $Z$ bosons are anticipated to be produced for the configuration with two interaction points. The high statistics of Higgs bosons, $W$ bosons and top quarks in very clean experimental conditions could offer additional opportunities at other collision energies. Three physics cases producing long-lived signatures at FCC-ee are highlighted and studied in this paper: heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), axion-like particles (ALPs), and exotic decays of the Higgs boson. These searches motivate out-of-the-box optimization of experimental conditions and analysis techniques, that could lead to improvements in other physics searches.

Tau trigger at the ATLAS experiment

Many theoretical models, like the Standard Model or SUSY at large tan(beta), predict Higgs bosons or new particles which decay more abundantly to final states including tau leptons than to other leptons. At the energy scale of the LHC, the identification of tau leptons, in particular in the hadronic decay mode, will be a challenging task due to an overwhelming QCD background which gives rise to jets of particles that can be hard to distinguish from hadronic tau decays. Equipped with excellent tracking and calorimetry, the ATLAS experiment has developed tau identification tools capable of working at the trigger level. This contribution presents tau trigger algorithms which exploit the main features of hadronic tau decays and describes the current tau trigger commissioning activities.
