Quantum $SL^+(N,\mathbb{R})$ as a locally compact quantum group

We construct the first examples of purely continuous, $q$-deformed Lie type locally compact quantum groups in higher rank. They arise from Drinfeld-Jimbo quantization, at unimodular deformation parameter, of the totally positive part of higher rank split real Lie groups in type $A$. Our techniques are based on quantum cluster theory, in particular as developed through the work of Fock and Goncharov.

Response of solar irradiance to sunspot area variations

One of the important open questions in solar irradiance studies is whether long-term variability (i.e. on timescales of years and beyond) can be reconstructed by means of models that describe short-term variability (i.e. days) using solar proxies as inputs. Preminger and Walton (2005, GRL, 32, 14109) showed that the relationship between spectral solar irradiance and proxies of magnetic-flux emergence, such as the daily sunspot area, can be described in the framework of linear system theory by means of the impulse response. We significantly refine that empirical model by removing spurious solar-rotational effects and by including an additional term that captures long-term variations. Our results show that long-term variability cannot be reconstructed from the short-term response of the spectral irradiance, which cautions the extension of solar proxy models to these timescales. In addition, we find that the solar response is nonlinear in such a way that cannot be corrected simply by applying a rescaling to sunspot area.

Upgrading the Solar-Stellar Connection: News about activity in Cool Stars

In this splinter session, ten speakers presented results on solar and stellar activity and how the two fields are connected. This was followed by a lively discussion and supplemented by short, one-minute highlight talks. The talks presented new theoretical and observational results on mass accretion on the Sun, the activity rate of flare stars, the evolution of the stellar magnetic field on time scales of a single cycle and over the lifetime of a star, and two different approaches to model the radial-velocity jitter in cool stars that is due to the granulation on the surface. Talks and discussion showed how much the interpretation of stellar activity data relies on the sun and how the large number of objects available in stellar studies can extend the parameter range of activity models.

Recent variability of the solar spectral irradiance and its impact on climate modelling

The lack of long and reliable time series of solar spectral irradiance (SSI) measurements makes an accurate quantification of solar contributions to recent climate change difficult. Whereas earlier SSI observations and models provided a qualitatively consistent picture of the SSI variability, recent measurements by the SORCE satellite suggest a significantly stronger variability in the ultraviolet (UV) spectral range and changes in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands in anti-phase with the solar cycle. A number of recent chemistry-climate model (CCM) simulations have shown that this might have significant implications on the Earth's atmosphere. Motivated by these results, we summarize here our current knowledge of SSI variability and its impact on Earth's climate. We present a detailed overview of existing SSI measurements and provide thorough comparison of models available to date. SSI changes influence the Earth's atmosphere, both directly, through changes in shortwave (SW) heating and therefore, temperature and ozone distributions in the stratosphere, and indirectly, through dynamical feedbacks. We investigate these direct and indirect effects using several state-of-the art CCM simulations forced with measured and modeled SSI changes. A unique asset of this study is the use of a common comprehensive approach for an issue that is usually addressed separately by different communities. Omissis. Finally, we discuss the reliability of the available data and we propose additional coordinated work, first to build composite SSI datasets out of scattered observations and to refine current SSI models, and second, to run coordinated CCM experiments.

Several Applications of Bezout Matrices

The notion of Bezout matrix is an essential tool in studying broad variety of subjects: zeroes of polynomials, stability of differential equations, rational transformations of algebraic curves, systems of commuting nonselfadjoint operators, boundaries of quadrature domains etc. We present a survey of several properties of Bezout matrices and their applications in all mentioned topics. We use the framework of Vandermonde vectors because such approach allows us to give new proofs of both classical and modern results and in many cases to obtain new explicit formulas. These explicit formulas can significantly simplify various computational problems and, in particular, make the research of algebraic curves and their applications easier. In addition we wrote a Maple software package, which computes all the formulas. For instance, as Bezout matrices are used in order to compute the image of a rational transformation of an algebraic curve, we used these results to study some connections between small degree rational transformation of an algebraic curve and the braid monodromy of its image.

Braid Monodromy Type and Rational Transformations of Plane Algebraic Curves

We combine the newly discovered technique, which computes explicit formulas for the image of an algebraic curve under rational transformation, with techniques that enable to compute braid monodromies of such curves. We use this combination in order to study properties of the braid monodromy of the image of curves under a given rational transformation. A description of the general method is given along with full classification of the images of two intersecting lines under degree 2 rational transformation. We also establish a connection between degree 2 rational transformations and the local braid monodromy of the image at the intersecting point of two lines. Moreover, we present an example of two birationally isomorphic curves with the same braid monodromy type and non diffeomorphic real parts.
