Green-Kubo approach to the average swim speed in active Brownian systems

We develop an exact Green-Kubo formula relating nonequilibrium averages in systems of interacting active Brownian particles to equilibrium time-correlation functions. The method is applied to calculate the density-dependent average swim speed, which is a key quantity entering coarse grained theories of active matter. The average swim speed is determined by integrating the equilibrium autocorrelation function of the interaction force acting on a tagged particle. Analytical results are validated using Brownian dynamics simulations.

Metallization and APPJ treatment of Bismaleimide

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins are a new breed of thermosetting resins used mainly for high temperature applications and have major usage in aerospace. FTIR studies have shown the signatures of imide, CNC stretching, malemide and N-H stretching. These BMI polymer coatings were deposited on aluminum and mild steel substrates by sprinkling powers followed by baking. Thermo gravimetric analysis and Differential scanning calorimetric studies showed the degradation temperature of these polymers around 370oC. Aluminum coatings were deposited on BMI previously deposited on Al and mild steel to make a metal-BMI-metal trilayer. These trilayers can solve the problem charging of the aircraft bodies at high altitudes. Atomic force microscopy was done to determine the morphology of the surface. Roughness and thickness measurements of the BMI coatings were carried out by surface profilometer. Vickers microhardness tests showed an increase in hardness of the metal-BMI-metal trilayer. FTIR spectrum showed signature of imides, CNC stretching, maleimide and N-H stretching in BMI. We observed that peak broadens at which shows the release of the stress during thermal treatment of the coating. The coating is subject to variable APPJ conditions which improve the properties at high temperature.

Strain-driven criticality underlies nonlinear mechanics of fibrous networks

Networks with only central force interactions are floppy when their average connectivity is below an isostatic threshold. Although such networks are mechanically unstable, they can become rigid when strained. It was recently shown that the transition from floppy to rigid states as a function of simple shear strain is continuous, with hallmark signatures of criticality (Nat. Phys. 12, 584 (2016)). The nonlinear mechanical response of collagen networks was shown to be quantitatively described within the framework of such mechanical critical phenomenon. Here, we provide a more quantitative characterization of critical behavior in subisostatic networks. Using finite size scaling we demonstrate the divergence of strain fluctuations in the network at well-defined critical strain. We show that the characteristic strain corresponding to the onset of strain stiffening is distinct from but related to this critical strain in a way that depends on critical exponents. We confirm this prediction experimentally for collagen networks. Moreover, we find that the apparent critical exponents are largely independent of the spatial dimensionality. In a highly simplified computational model of network dynamics, we also observe critical slowing down in the vicinity of the critical strain. With subisostaticity as the only required condition, strain-driven criticality is expected to be a general feature of biologically relevant fibrous networks.

R&D towards the CMS RPC Phase-2 upgrade

The high pseudo-rapidity region of the CMS muon system is covered by Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) only and lacks redundant coverage despite the fact that it is a challenging region for muons in terms of backgrounds and momentum resolution. In order to maintain good efficiency for the muon trigger in this region additional RPCs are planned to be installed in the two outermost stations at low angle named RE3/1 and RE4/1. These stations will use RPCs with finer granularity and good timing resolution to mitigate background effects and to increase the redundancy of the system.

Performance of Resistive Plate Chambers installed during the first long shutdown of the CMS experiment

The CMS experiment, located at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, has a redundant muon system composed by three different detector technologies: Cathode Strip Chambers (in the forward regions), Drift Tubes (in the central region) and Resistive Plate Chambers (both its central and forward regions). All three are used for muon reconstruction and triggering. During the first long shutdown (LS1) of the LHC (2013-2014) the CMS muon system has been upgraded with 144 newly installed RPCs on the forth forward stations. The new chambers ensure and enhance the muon trigger efficiency in the high luminosity conditions of the LHC Run2. The chambers have been successfully installed and commissioned. The system has been run successfully and experimental data has been collected and analyzed. The performance results of the newly installed RPCs will be presented.

Geometry of pointwise pseudo-slant warped product submanifolds in a Kähler manifold

The purpose of this paper is to study pointwise pseudo-slant warped product submanifolds of a Kähler manifold $\widetilde{M}$. We derive the conditions of integrability and totally geodesic foliation for the distributions allied to the characterization of a pointwise pseudo-slant submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$. The necessary and sufficient conditions for isometrically immersed pointwise pseudo-slant submanfold of $\widetilde{M}$ to be a pointwise pseudo-slant warped product and a locally Riemannian product are obtained.

Radiation Tests of Real-Sized Prototype RPCs for the Future CMS RPC Upscope

We report on a systematic study of double-gap and four-gap phenolic resistive plate chambers (RPCs) for future high-η RPC triggers in the CMS. In the present study, we constructed real-sized double-gap and four-gap RPCs with gap thicknesses of 1.6 and 0.8 mm, respectively, with 2-mm-thick phenolic high-pressure-laminated (HPL) plates. We examined the prototype RPCs for cosmic rays and 100 GeV muons provided by the SPS H4 beam line at CERN. We applied maximum gamma rates of 1.5 kHz cm-2 provided by 137Cs sources at Korea University and the GIF++ irradiation facility installed at the SPS H4 beam line to examine the rate capabilities of the prototype RPCs. In contrast to the case of the four-gap RPCs, we found the relatively high threshold was conducive to effectively suppressing the rapid increase of strip cluster sizes of muon hits with high voltage, especially when measuring the narrow-pitch strips. The gamma-induced currents drawn in the four-gap RPC were about one-fourth of those drawn in the double-gap RPC. The rate capabilities of both RPC types, proven through the present testing using gamma-ray sources, far exceeded the maximum rate expected in the new high-η endcap RPCs planned for future phase-II LHC runs.

$\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product submanifold of a nearly paracosymplectic manifold

In this paper, we study $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product submanifold of a nearly paracosymplectic manifold $\widetilde{M}$. The necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the distributions allied to the characterization of a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant submanifold being integrable and totally geodesic foliation. In addition, we have defined $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$ and gave some illustrations. Finally, we extracted the constraints for a submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$ to be a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product of the form $F\times_{f}N_λ$.

Candidate eco-friendly gas mixtures for MPGDs

Modern gas detectors for detection of particles require F-based gases for optimal performance. Recent regulations demand the use of environmentally unfriendly F-based gases to be limited or banned. This review studies properties of potential eco-friendly gas candidate replacements.

Geometry of $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-semi-invariant warped product submanifolds in paracosymplectic manifold

The purpose of this paper is to study $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-semi-invariant warped product submanifolds of a paracosymplectic manifold $\widetilde{M}$. We prove that the distributions associated with the definition of $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-semi-invariant warped product submanifold $M$ are always integrable. A necessary and sufficient condition for an isometrically immersed $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-semi-invariant submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$ to be a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-semi-invariant warped product submanifold is obtained in terms of the shape operator.

Strain-controlled criticality governs the nonlinear mechanics of fibre networks

Disordered fibrous networks are ubiquitous in nature as major structural components of living cells and tissues. The mechanical stability of networks generally depends on the degree of connectivity: only when the average number of connections between nodes exceeds the isostatic threshold are networks stable (Maxwell, J. C., Philosophical Magazine 27, 294 (1864)). Upon increasing the connectivity through this point, such networks undergo a mechanical phase transition from a floppy to a rigid phase. However, even sub-isostatic networks become rigid when subjected to sufficiently large deformations. To study this strain-controlled transition, we perform a combination of computational modeling of fibre networks and experiments on networks of type I collagen fibers, which are crucial for the integrity of biological tissues. We show theoretically that the development of rigidity is characterized by a strain-controlled continuous phase transition with signatures of criticality. Our experiments demonstrate mechanical properties consistent with our model, including the predicted critical exponents. We show that the nonlinear mechanics of collagen networks can be quantitatively captured by the predictions of scaling theory for the strain-controlled critical behavior over a wide range of network concentrations and strains up to failure of the material.

Anomalous discontinuity at the percolation critical point of active gels

We develop a percolation model motivated by recent experimental studies of gels with active network remodeling by molecular motors. This remodeling was found to lead to a critical state reminiscent of random percolation (RP), but with a cluster distribution inconsistent with RP. Our model not only can account for these experiments, but also exhibits an unusual type of mixed phase transition: We find that the transition is characterized by signatures of criticality, but with a discontinuity in the order parameter.

Driven diffusive systems with mutually interactive Langmuir kinetics

We investigate the simple one-dimensional driven model, the totally asymmetric exclusion process, coupled to mutually interactive Langmuir kinetics. This model is motivated by recent studies on clustering of motor proteins on microtubules. In the proposed model, the attachment and detachment rates of a particle are modified depending upon the occupancy of neighbouring sites. We first obtain continuum mean-field equations and in certain limiting cases obtain analytic solutions. We show how mutual interactions increase (decrease) the effects of boundaries on the phase behavior of the model. We perform Monte Carlo simulations and demonstrate that our analytical approximations are in good agreement with the numerics over a wide range of model parameters. We present phase diagrams over a selective range of parameters.

Active biopolymer networks generate scale-free but euclidean clusters

We report analytical and numerical modelling of active elastic networks, motivated by experiments on crosslinked actin networks contracted by myosin motors. Within a broad range of parameters, the motor-driven collapse of active elastic networks leads to a critical state. We show that this state is qualitatively different from that of the random percolation model. Intriguingly, it possesses both euclidean and scale-free structure with Fisher exponent smaller than $2$. Remarkably, an indistinguishable Fisher exponent and the same euclidean structure is obtained at the critical point of the random percolation model after absorbing all enclaves into their surrounding clusters. We propose that in the experiment the enclaves are absorbed due to steric interactions of network elements. We model the network collapse, taking into account the steric interactions. The model shows how the system robustly drives itself towards the critical point of the random percolation model with absorbed enclaves, in agreement with the experiment.
