Technical Design Report (TDR): Searching for a Sterile Neutrino at J-PARC MLF (E56, JSNS2)

In this document, the technical details of the JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment are described. The search for sterile neutrinos is currently one of the hottest topics in neutrino physics. The JSNS$^2$ experiment aims to search for the existence of neutrino oscillations with $Δm^2$ near 1 eV$^2$ at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). A 1 MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense neutrino beam from muon decay at rest. Neutrinos come predominantly from $μ^+$ decay: $μ^{+} \to e^{+} + \barν_μ + ν_{e}$. The experiment will search for $\barν_μ$ to $\barν_{e}$ oscillations which are detected by the inverse beta decay interaction $\barν_{e} + p \to e^{+} + n$, followed by gammas from neutron capture on Gd. The detector has a fiducial volume of 17 tons and is located 24 meters away from the mercury target. JSNS$^2$ offers the ultimate direct test of the LSND anomaly. In addition to the sterile neutrino search, the physics program includes cross section measurements with neutrinos with a few 10's of MeV from muon decay at rest and with monochromatic 236 MeV neutrinos from kaon decay at rest. These cross sections are relevant for our understanding of supernova explosions and nuclear physics.

Magnetic monopole loops generated from two-instanton solutions: Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi versus 't Hooft instanton

In our previous paper (Fukui et al., 2010), we have shown that the Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi two-instanton generates a circular loop of magnetic monopole in the four-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. On the other hand, it is claimed in Brower, Orginos and Tan (1997) that the 't Hooft two-instanton does not generate magnetic monopole loop. It seems that two results are inconsistent with each other, since the JNR two-instanton converges to the 't Hooft two-instanton in a certain limit. In this paper, we clarify that two results are compatible with each other by demonstrating how the magnetic monopole loop generated from the JNR two-instanton deforms in the process of taking the 't Hooft two-instanton limit.

Magnetic monopole loops generated from calorons with nontrivial holonomy

We study whether or not magnetic monopoles are generated from calorons defined in the space $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the period $β$. We give numerical evidence that one-caloron solution with nontrivial holonomy generates two loops of magnetic monopole and each loop passing through one of the two poles of the caloron winds along the time direction for small $β$, while two loops approach each other to fuse into an unwinding loop for large $β$, suggesting the existence of a critical value of $β$ separating two different phases. This work is a first step to explain quark confinement/deconfinement at finite temperature from the viewpoint of dual superconductor picture in our framework.

Non-Abelian Dual Superconductor Picture for Quark Confinement

We give a theoretical framework for defining and extracting non-Abelian magnetic monopoles in a gauge-invariant way in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory to study quark confinement. Then we give numerical evidences that the non-Abelian magnetic monopole defined in this way gives a dominant contribution to confinement of fundamental quarks in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, which is in sharp contrast to the SU(2) case in which Abelian magnetic monopoles play the dominant role for quark confinement.

Gauge-independent derivation of "Abelian" dominance and magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension

Recently, we have developed a reformulation of the lattice Yang-Mills theory based on the change of variables a la Cho-Faddeev-Niemi combined with a non-Abelian Stokes theorem. In this talk, we give a new procedure (called reduction) for obtaining the color field which plays the central role in this reformulation. In the 4D SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory, we confirm the gauge-independent "abelian" dominance and gauge-independent magnetic-monopole dominance in the string tension extracted from the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation.

New descriptions of lattice SU(N) Yang-Mills theory towards quark confinement

We give new descriptions of lattice SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in terms of new lattice variables. The validity of such descriptions has already been demonstrated in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory by our previous works from the viewpoint of defining and extracting topological degrees of freedom such as gauge-invariant magnetic monopoles and vortices which play the dominant role in quark confinement. In particular, we have found that the SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory has two possible options, maximal and minimal: The existence of the minimal option has been overlooked so far, while the maximal option reproduces the conventional SU(3) Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov decomposition in the naive continuum limit. The new description gives an important framework for understanding the mechanism of quark confinement based on the dual superconductivity.

Toward gauge independent study of confinement in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

Dual superconductivity is believed to be a promising mechanism for quark confinement and has been investigated on a lattice effectively by a particular gauge called the maximal Abelian (MA) gauge. We propose a new formulation of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory on a lattice based on a non-linear change of variables where the new field variables are expected to reduce to those of the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi- Shabanov decomposition in the continuum limit. By introducing a new variable, say color field, carrying the color direction with it, this formulation enables us to restore and maintain color symmetry that was lost in the conventional MA gauge due to the naive separation of the gauge potential into diagonal and off-diagonal components. An advantage of this formulation is that we can define gaugeinvariant magnetic monopoles without relying on specific gauges to investigate quark confinement from the viewpoint of dual superconductivity. In this talk, we will present the relevant lattice formulation to realize the above advantages and preliminary results of numerical simulations to demonstrate the validity of this formulation. This SU(3) formulation is an extension of the SU(2) version already proposed by us in the previous conference.

Compact lattice formulation of Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition: gluon mass generation and infrared Abelian dominance

This paper complements a new lattice formulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory written in terms of new variables in a compact form proposed in the previous paper. The new variables used in the formulation were once called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi or Cho--Faddeev--Niemi--Shabanov decomposition. Our formulation enables us to explain the infrared ``Abelian'' dominance, in addition to magnetic monopole dominance shown in the previous paper, in the gauge invariant way without relying on the specific gauge fixing called the maximal Abelian gauge used in the conventional investigations. In this paper, especially, we demonstrate by numerical simulations that gluon degrees of freedom other than the ``Abelian'' part acquire the mass to be decoupled in the low-energy region leading to the infrared Abelian dominance.

Compact lattice formulation of Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition: string tension from magnetic monopoles

In this paper we begin on a new lattice formulation of the non-linear change of variables called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. This is a compact lattice formulation improving the non-compact lattice formulation proposed in our previous paper. Based on this formulation, we propose a new gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current which guarantees the magnetic charge quantization and reproduces the conventional magnetic-current density obtained in the Abelian projection based on the DeGrand--Toussaint method. Finally, we demonstrate the magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. Our formulation enables one to reproduce in the gauge-invariant way remarkable results obtained so far only in the Maximally Abelian gauge.

Quark confinement and gauge invariant monopoles in SU(2) YM

We give a short review of recently obtained results on a new lattice formulation of the non-linear change of variables which was once called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Based on this formulation, we proposed a new gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current which guarantees the magnetic charge quantization. We also demonstrated the magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. Our formulation enables one to reproduce in the gauge-invariant way remarkable results obtained so far only in the Maximally Abelian gauge.

Gluon mass generation and infrared Abelian dominance in Yang-Mills theory

The dual superconductivity is believed to be a promising mechanism for quark confinement. Indeed, what this picture is true has been confirmed in the maximal Abelian (MA) gauge. However, it is not yet confirmed in any other gauge and the MA gauge explicitly breaks color symmetry. To remedy this defect, we propose to use our compact formulation of a non-linear change of variables on a lattice. This formulation has succeeded to extract the magnetic monopole with integer-valued magnetic charge in the gauge-invariant way. In this talk, we present measurements of various correlation functions for the operators constructed from the CFN variables in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Some of our results reproduce previous results obtained in MA gauge, e.g., DeGrant-Toussaint monopole, infrared Abelian dominance and off-diagonal gluon mass generation. These studies preserve color symmetry, in sharp contrast to the conventional MA gauge. We argue the gauge fixing independence of these results and the implications to quark confinement

Signature of Carrier-Induced Ferromagnetism in Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta}: Exchange Interaction Between High-Spin Co 2+ and the Ti 3d Conduction Band

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were performed on thin-film samples of rutile Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta} to reveal the electronic structure. The Co 2p core level spectra indicate that the Co ions take the high-spin Co 2+ configuration, consistent with substitution on the Ti site. The high spin state and the shift due to the exchange splitting of the conduction band suggest strong hybridization between carriers in the Ti 3d t2g band and the t2g states of the high-spin Co 2+. These observations support the argument that room temperature ferromagnetism in Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta} is intrinsic.

Lattice construction of Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition and gauge invariant monopole

We present the first implementation of the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field on a lattice. Our construction retains the color symmetry (global SU(2) gauge invariance) even after a new type of Maximally Abelian gauge, as explicitly demonstrated by numerical simulations. Moreover, we propose a gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current using this formulation and compare the new definition with the conventional one by DeGrand and Toussaint to exhibit its validity.

Numerical evidence for the existence of a novel magnetic condensation in Yang-Mills theory

We present a first numerical evidence for the existence of a novel magnetic condensate proposed recently by one of the authors in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. In our framework, the spontaneously generated color magnetic field identified with the Savvidy vacuum has the microscopic origin and is a consequence of the intrinsic dynamics of the Yang-Mills theory. It strongly suggests the Nielsen--Olesen instability of the Savvidy vacuum disappears and the stability is restored without the need of the Copenhagen vacuum. The implications to the Faddeev-Skyrme model are also discussed. These results are obtained through the first implementation of the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition of the Yang-Mills field on a lattice.

Anomalous Flux Flow Resistivity in Two Gap Superconductor MgB_2

The flux flow resistivity associated with purely viscous motion of vortices in high-quality MgB_2 was measured by microwave surface impedance. Flux flow resistivity exhibits unusual field dependence with strong enhancement at low field, which is markedly different to conventional s-wave superconductors. A crossover field which separates two distinct flux flow regimes having different flux flow resistivity slopes was clearly observed in H//ab-plane. The unusual H-dependence indicates that two very differently sized superconducting gaps in MgB_2 manifest in the vortex dynamics and almost equally contribute to energy dissipation. The carrier scattering rate in two different bands is also discussed with the present results, compared to heat capacity and thermal conductivity results.

Free flux flow resistivity in strongly overdoped high-T_c cuprate; purely viscous motion of the vortices in semiclassical d-wave superconductor

We report the free flux flow (FFF) resistivity associated with a purely viscous motion of the vortices in moderately clean d-wave superconductor Bi:2201 in the strongly overdoped regime (T_c=16K) for a wide range of the magnetic field in the vortex state. The FFF resistivity is obtained by measuring the microwave surface impedance at different microwave frequencies. It is found that the FFF resistivity is remarkably different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. At low fields (H<0.2H_c2) the FFF resistivity increases linearly with H with a coefficient which is far larger than that found in conventional s-wave superconductors. At higher fields, the FFF resistivity increases in proportion to \sqrt H up to H_c2. Based on these results, the energy dissipation mechanism associated with the viscous vortex motion in "semiclassical" d-wave superconductors with gap nodes is discussed. Two possible scenarios are put forth for these field dependence; the enhancement of the quasiparticle relaxation rate and the reduction of the number of the quasiparticles participating the energy dissipation in d-wave vortex state.

Low Energy Quasiparticle Excitation in the Vortex State of Borocarbide Superconductor YNi_2B_2C

We have measured the low temperature heat capacity Cp and microwave surface impedance Zs in the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C. In contrast to conventional s-wave superconductors, Cp shows a nearly \sqrt H-dependence. This \sqrt H-dependence persists even after the introduction of the columnar defects which change the electronic structure of the vortex core regime dramatically and strongly disturb the regular vortex lattice. On the other hand, flux flow resistivity obtained from Zs is nearly proportional to H. Taken together, these results indicate that the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C is fundamentally different from the conventional s-wave counterparts, in that the delocalized quasiparticle states around the vortex core play a much more important role, similar to d-wave superconductors.
