Christ-Lee Model: Augmented Supervariable Approach

We derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST as well as (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for the gauge-invariant Christ-Lee model by exploiting the celebrated (dual-)horizontality conditions together with the gauge-invariant and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions within the framework of geometrical "augmented" supervariable approach to BRST formalism. We show the (anti-) BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariances of the Lagrangian in the context of supervariable approach. We also provide the geometrical origin and capture the key properties associated with the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations (and corresponding conserved charges) in terms of the supervariables and Grassmannian translational generators.

Temporal variability and estimation of jet parameters for Ton 599

The TeV blazar Ton 599 has exhibited a peculiar flare in 2017 November. The temporal variation of the source is studied using simultaneous $γ$-ray data from $\textit{Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope and radio data from Owens Valley Radio Observatory's 40 m telescope, over the period of nine years. Four major flaring periods are observed in the $γ$-ray energy band of 0.1-300 GeV. These periods are studied on a shorter timescale and modeled with a time-dependent function containing exponential rising and decaying components. The physical parameters of the jet are estimated numerically and compared with those reported in the literature. During the fourth flare a bunch of high energy photons ($>$10 GeV) were detected. The two highest energy photons having an energy of 76.9 GeV and 61.9 GeV are detected on MJD 58059.0 and 58073.3, respectively. This observation possibly constrains the $γ$-ray emission region to lie near outer edge or outside the broad line region of size $\sim$0.08 pc. The variation of equivalent width of a Mg-II line is studied using the spectroscopic data from Steward observatory. It was observed that the equivalent width of the line varies inversely with the underlying power-law continuum.

Nilpotent Symmetries of a 4D Model of the Hodge Theory: Augmented (Anti-)Chiral Superfield Formalism

We derive the continuous nilpotent symmetries of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) model of the Hodge theory (i.e. 4D Abelian 2-form gauge theory) by exploiting the beauty and strength of the symmetry invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral superfields. The above off-shell nilpotent symmetries are the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and (anti-)co-BRST transformations which turn up beautifully due to the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral superfields that are defined on the (4, 1)-dimensional (anti-)chiral super-submanifolds of the general (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold on which our ordinary 4D theory is generalized. The latter supermanifold is characterized by the superspace coordinates $Z^M = (x^μ,\, θ,\, \barθ)$ where $x^μ\, (μ= 0, 1, 2, 3 )$ are the bosonic coordinates and a pair of Grassmannian variables $θ$ and $\barθ$ are fermionic in nature as they obey the standard relationships: $θ^2 = {\barθ}^2 = 0,\, θ\,\barθ+ \barθ\,θ= 0$). The derivation of the {\it proper} (anti-)co-BRST symmetries and proof of the absolute anticommutativity property of the conserved (anti-)BRST and (anti-) co-BRST charges are novel results of our present investigation (where only the (anti-)chiral superfields and their super-expansions have been taken into account).

The Galaxies Beamline at SOLEIL Synchrotron: Inelastic X-ray Scattering and Photoelectron Spectroscopy in the Hard X-ray Range

The GALAXIES beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron is dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) and photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in the 2.3-12 keV hard x-ray range. These two techniques offer powerful, complementary methods of characterization of materials with bulk sensitivity, chemical and orbital selectivity, resonant enhancement and high resolving power. After a description of the beamline components and endstations, we address the beamline performances through a selection of recent works both in the solid and gas phases and using either IXS or HAXPES approaches. Prospects for studies on liquids are discussed.

Broadband study of blazar 1ES 1959+650 during flaring state in 2016

Aim : The nearby TeV blazar 1ES 1959+650 (z=0.047) was reported to be in flaring state during June - July 2016 by Fermi-LAT, FACT, MAGIC and VERITAS collaborations. We studied the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in different states of the flare during MJD 57530 - 57589 using simultaneous multiwaveband data to understand the possible broadband emission scenario during the flare. Methods : The UV/optical and X-ray data from UVOT and XRT respectively on board Swift and high energy $γ$-ray data from Fermi-LAT are used to generate multiwaveband lightcurves as well as to obtain high flux states and quiescent state SEDs. The correlation and lag between different energy bands is quantified using discrete correlation function. The synchrotron self Compton (SSC) model was used to reproduce the observed SEDs during flaring and quiescent states of the source. Results : A decent correlation is seen between X-ray and high energy $γ$-ray fluxes. The spectral hardening with increase in the flux is seen in X-ray band. The powerlaw index vs flux plot in $γ$-ray band indicates the different emission regions for 0.1 - 3 GeV and 3-300 GeV energy photons. Two zone SSC model satisfactorily fits the observed broadband SEDs. The inner zone is mainly responsible for producing synchrotron peak and high energy $γ$-ray part of the SED in all states. The second zone is mainly required to produce less variable optical/UV and low energy $γ$-ray emission. Conclusions : Conventional single zone SSC model does not satisfactorily explain broadband emission during observation period considered. There is an indication of two emission zones in the jet which are responsible for producing broadband emission from optical to high energy $γ$-rays.

Mirror Position Determination for the Alignment of Cherenkov Telescopes

Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) need imaging optics with large apertures to map the faint Cherenkov light emitted in extensive air showers onto their image sensors. Segmented reflectors fulfill these needs using mass produced and light weight mirror facets. However, as the overall image is the sum of the individual mirror facet images, alignment is important. Here we present a method to determine the mirror facet positions on a segmented reflector in a very direct way. Our method reconstructs the mirror facet positions from photographs and a laser distance meter measurement which goes from the center of the image sensor plane to the center of each mirror facet. We use our method to both align the mirror facet positions and to feed the measured positions into our IACT simulation. We demonstrate our implementation on the 4 m First Geiger-mode Avalanche Cherenkov Telescope (FACT).

The crystal structure of Rb2Ti2O5

Recent results have demonstrated an exceptionally high dielectric constant in the range 200 K-330 K in a crystalline tianium oxide : Rb2Ti2O5. In this article, the possibility of a structural transition giving rise to ferroelectricity is carefully inspected. In particular X-Ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy are performed. The crystal structure is shown to remain invariant and centrosymmetric at all temperatures between 90 K and 450 K. The stability of the C2/m structure is confirmed by DFT calculations. These important findings allow to discard the existence of a conventional ferroelectric phase transition as a possible mechanism for the unusual dielectric constant observed in this material.

Novel symmetries in Weyl-invariant gravity with massive gauge field

The background field method is used to linearize the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, coupled with a Stueckelberg field. For a generic background metric, this action is found to be not invariant, under both diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, the latter being a combination of gauge and Weyl transformations. Interestingly, the quadratic Lagrangian, emerging from a background of Minkowski metric, respects both the transformations, independently. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry of scalar-tensor gravity coupled with a Stueckelberg-like massive gauge particle, possessing diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, reveals that in both the cases, negative norm states with unphysical degrees of freedom do exist. We then show that, by combining diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetries, all the ghost states decouple, thereby removing the unphysical redundancies of the theory. During this process, the scalar field does not represent any dynamic mode, yet modifies the usual harmonic gauge condition through non-minimal coupling with gravity.

Novel Symmetries in Christ-Lee Model

We demonstrate that the gauge-fixed Lagrangian of the Christ-Lee model respects four fermionic symmetries, namely; (anti-)BRST symmetries, (anti-)co-BRST symmetries within the framework of BRST formalism. The appropriate anticommutators amongst the fermionic symmetries lead to a unique bosonic symmetry. It turns out that the algebra obeyed by the symmetry transformations (and their corresponding conserved charges) is reminiscent of the algebra satisfied by the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We also provide the physical realizations of the cohomological operators in terms of the symmetry properties. Thus, the present model provides a simple model for the Hodge theory.

Bokeh Mirror Alignment for Cherenkov Telescopes

Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) need imaging optics with large apertures and high image intensities to map the faint Cherenkov light emitted from cosmic ray air showers onto their image sensors. Segmented reflectors fulfill these needs, and composed from mass production mirror facets they are inexpensive and lightweight. However, as the overall image is a superposition of the individual facet images, alignment remains a challenge. Here we present a simple, yet extendable method, to align a segmented reflector using its Bokeh. Bokeh alignment does not need a star or good weather nights but can be done even during daytime. Bokeh alignment optimizes the facet orientations by comparing the segmented reflectors Bokeh to a predefined template. The optimal Bokeh template is highly constricted by the reflector's aperture and is easy accessible. The Bokeh is observed using the out of focus image of a near by point like light source in a distance of about 10 focal lengths. We introduce Bokeh alignment on segmented reflectors and demonstrate it on the First Geiger-mode Avalanche Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) on La Palma, Spain.

Normalized and Asynchronous Mirror Alignment for Cherenkov Telescopes

Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) need imaging optics with large apertures and high image intensities to map the faint Cherenkov light emitted from cosmic ray air showers onto their image sensors. Segmented reflectors fulfill these needs, and as they are composed from mass production mirror facets they are inexpensive and lightweight. However, as the overall image is a superposition of the individual facet images, alignment is a challenge. Here we present a computer vision based star tracking alignment method, which also works for limited or changing star light visibility. Our method normalizes the mirror facet reflection intensities to become independent of the reference star's intensity or the cloud coverage. Using two CCD cameras, our method records the mirror facet orientations asynchronously of the telescope drive system, and thus makes the method easy to integrate into existing telescopes. It can be combined with remote facet actuation, but does not require one to work. Furthermore, it can reconstruct all individual mirror facet point spread functions without moving any mirror. We present alignment results on the 4 meter First Geiger-mode Avalanche Cherenkov Telescope (FACT).

The Multi-wavelength Characteristics of the TeV Binary LS I +61$^\circ$ 303

We study the characteristics of the TeV binary LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 in radio, soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and gamma-ray (GeV and TeV) energies. The long term variability characteristics are examined as a function of the phase of the binary period of 26.496 days as well as the phase of the super orbital period of 1626 days, dividing the observations into a matrix of 10$\times$10 phases of these two periods. It is found that the long term variability can be described by a sine function of the super orbital period, with the phase and amplitude systematically varying with the binary period phase. We also find a definite wavelength dependent change in this variability description. To understand the radiation mechanism, we define three states in the orbital/ super orbital phase matrix and examine the wide band spectral energy distribution. The derived source parameters indicate that the emission geometry is dominated by a jet structure showing a systematic variation with the orbital/ super orbital period. We suggest that LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 is likely to be a micro-quasar with a steady jet.

Augmented Superfield Approach to Nilpotent Symmetries in the Modified Version of 2D Proca Theory

We derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for all the fields of the modified version of two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) Proca theory by exploiting the "augmented" superfield formalism where the (dual-)horizontality conditions and (dual-)gauge-invariant restrictions are exploited together. We capture the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariance of the Lagrangian density in the language of superfield formalism. We also express the nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST charges within the framework of augmented superfield formalism. This exercise leads to some novel observations which have, hitherto, not been pointed out in the literature within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. For the sake of completeness, we also mention, very briefly, a unique bosonic symmetry, the ghost-scale symmetry and discrete symmetries of the theory and show that the algebra of conserved charges captures the cohomological aspects of differential geometry. Thus, our present modified 2D Proca theory is a model for the Hodge Theory.

Controlling Unpredictability with Observations in the Partially Observed Lorenz '96 Model

In the context of filtering chaotic dynamical systems it is well-known that partial observations, if sufficiently informative, can be used to control the inherent uncertainty due to chaos. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, both theoretically and numerically, conditions on the observations of chaotic systems under which they can be accurately filtered. In particular, we highlight the advantage of adaptive observation operators over fixed ones. The Lorenz '96 model is used to exemplify our findings. We consider discrete-time and continuous-time observations in our theoretical developments. We prove that, for fixed observation operator, the 3DVAR filter can recover the system state within a neighbourhood determined by the size of the observational noise. It is required that a sufficiently large proportion of the state vector is observed, and an explicit form for such sufficient fixed observation operator is given. Numerical experiments, where the data is incorporated by use of the 3DVAR and extended Kalman filters, suggest that less informative fixed operators than given by our theory can still lead to accurate signal reconstruction. Adaptive observation operators are then studied numerically; we show that, for carefully chosen adaptive observation operators, the proportion of the state vector that needs to be observed is drastically smaller than with a fixed observation operator. Indeed, we show that the number of state coordinates that need to be observed may even be significantly smaller than the total number of positive Lyapunov exponents of the underlying system.

N = 2 Supersymmetric Harmonic Oscillator: Basic Brackets Without Canonical Conjugate Momenta

We exploit the ideas of spin-statistics theorem, normal-ordering and the key concepts behind the symmetry principles to derive the canonical (anti)commutators for the case of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) harmonic oscillator (HO) without taking the help of the mathematical definition of canonical conjugate momenta with respect to the bosonic and fermionic variables of this toy model for the Hodge theory (where the continuous and discrete symmetries of the theory provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry). In our present endeavor, it is the full set of continuous symmetries and their corresponding generators that lead to the derivation of basic (anti)commutators amongst the creation and annihilation operators that appear in the normal mode expansions of the dynamical fermionic and bosonic variables of our present N = 2 SUSY theory of a HO. These basic brackets are in complete agreement with such kind of brackets that are derived from the standard canonical method of quantization scheme.

Multi-frequency, Multi-Epoch Study of Mrk 501: Hints for a two-component nature of the emission

Since the detection of very high energy (VHE) $γ$-rays from Mrk 501, its broad band emission of radiation was mostly and quite effectively modeled using one zone emission scenario. However, broadband spectral and flux variability studies enabled by the multiwavelength campaigns carried out during the recent years have revealed rather complex behavior of Mrk 501. The observed emission from Mrk 501 could be due to a complex superposition of multiple emission zones. Moreover new evidences of detection of very hard intrinsic $γ$-ray spectra obtained from {\it Fermi}--LAT observations have challenged the theories about origin of VHE $γ$-rays. Our studies based on {\it Fermi}--LAT data indicate the existence of two separate components in the spectrum, one for low energy $γ$-rays and the other for high energy $γ$-rays. Using multiwaveband data from several ground and space based instruments, in addition to HAGAR data, the spectral energy distribution of Mrk~501 is obtained for various flux states observed during 2011. In the present work, this observed broadband spectral energy distribution is reproduced with a leptonic, multi-zone Synchrotron Self-Compton model.

Supervariable approach to nilpotent symmetries of a couple of N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models

We derive the on-shell as well as off-shell nilpotent supersymmetric (SUSY) symmetry transformations for the N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) free SUSY particle by exploiting the SUSY invariant restrictions (SUSYIRs) on the (anti-)chiral supervariables of the SUSY theory that is defined on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθwith θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). Within the framework of our novel approach, we express the Lagrangian and conserved SUSY charges in terms of the (anti-)chiral supervariables to demonstrate the SUSY invariance of the Lagrangian as well as the nilpotency of the SUSY conserved charges in a simple manner. Our approach has the potential to be generalized to the description of other N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical systems with physically interesting potential functions. To corroborate the above assertion, we apply our method to derive the N = 2 continuous and nilpotent SUSY transformations for one of the simplest interacting SUSY system of a 1D harmonic oscillator.

Nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting symmetries in the Freedman-Townsend model: augmented superfield formalism

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the (1-form) Yang-Mills (YM) and (2-form) tensorial gauge symmetries of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) Freedman-Townsend (FT) model, by exploiting the augmented version of Bonora-Tonin's (BT) superfield approach to BRST formalism where the 4D flat Minkowskian theory is generalized onto the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. One of the novel observations is the fact that we are theoretically compelled to go beyond the horizontality condition (HC) to invoke an additional set of gauge-invariant restrictions (GIRs) for the derivation of the full set of proper (anti-)BRST symmetries. To obtain the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the tensorial (2-form) gauge symmetries within the framework of augmented version of BT-superfield approach, we are logically forced to modify the FT-model to incorporate an auxiliary 1-form field and the kinetic term for the antisymmetric (2-form) gauge field. This is also a new observation in our present investigation. We point out some key differences between the modified FT-model and Lahiri-model (LM) of the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theories.
