High efficiency muon registration system based on scintillator strips

Experiments such as mu2e (FNAL, USA) and COMET (KEK, Japan), seeking the direct muon-to-electron conversion as part of the study of Charged Leptons Flavor Violation processes, should have a extremely high, up-to 99.99\%, efficiency muon detection system with a view to their subsequent suppression as background. In this article, the possibility to achieve such efficiency for a short and long term is discussed for modules based on 7- or 10-mm-thick but same 40-mm-wide plastic scintillation strips with single 1.2 mm WLS fiber glued into the groove along the strip and using MPPC/SiPM for light detection. A Simplified Light Yield Distribution method to estimate the efficiency of the module was proposed and the simulation results obtained with GEANT 4 for a system based on a 4-by-4 array of 7x40x3000 mm strips compared with the experimental data. Found that for the systems required the high level registration efficiency at the 99.99\% and more, it is important to improve the light yield as much as possible and achieve the gap between neighbor scintillation volumes as small as possible.

Light yield and radiation hardness studies of scintillator strips with a filler

Detectors based on polystyrene scintillator strips with WLS fiber readout are widely used to register charged particles in many high-energy physics experiments. The fibers are placed into grooves or holes along the strip. The detection efficiency of these devices can be significantly increased by improving the optical contact between the scintillator and the fiber by adding an optical filler into the groove/hole. This work is devoted to the study of the light yield of a 5-m-long scintillator strip with a 1.2-mm-diameter Kuraray Y11(200)~MC WLS fiber inserted into the strip's co-extruded hole filled with synthetic silicon resin SKTN-MED(E). The light yield was studied using cosmic muons and a $^{60}$Co radioactive source. Radiation hardness study of viscous fillers and short strip samples were performed on the IBR-2 pulsed research reactor of fast neutrons at JINR.

The increase of the light collection from scintillation strip with hole for WLS fiber using various types of fillers

The light collection of the extruded scintillator strip samples with WLS fibers placed in the longitudinal hole in the plates was measured. The holes were filled with various liquid fillers. Measurements were carried out under irradiation by cosmic muons. The method of pumping liquid filler with viscosity more than 10 Pa*s in the strip hole with WLS fiber inside was designed and successfully tested.

Optimization of light yield by injection of the optical filler into the co extruded hole of plastic scintillation bar with WLS fiber in it

Results of the measurements with cosmic muons for the light yield of 2-meter long extruded scintillation bar (strip) as a function of distance for different options for light collection technique are presented. Scintillation strip cross section geometry was a triangle made on polystyrene plastic scintillator with dopants of 2% PTP and 0.03% POPOP, extruded with 2.6 mm diameter hole and produced at ISMA (Kharkov, Ukraine). It was shown that the insertion of the optical transparent resin (BC 600 or CKTN MED(E)) by special technique into the co-extruded hole with 1.0 mm or 1.2 mm wave-length shifter (WLS) fiber Kuraray Y11 (200) MC in it significantly improves light collection by factor of 1.6...1.9 against of the 'dry' case.

Nuclear multifragmentation and fission: similarity and differences

Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid--fog phase transition deep inside the spinodal region. The experimental data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed. It is concluded that the decay process of hot nuclei is characterized by two size parameters: transition state and freeze-out volumes. The similarity between dynamics of fragmentation and ordinary fission is discussed. The IMF emission time is related to the mean rupture time at the multi-scission point, which corresponds to the kinetic freeze-out configuration.
