Scaling laws for the sensitivity enhancement of non-Gaussian spin states

We identify the large-$N$ scaling of the metrological quantum gain offered by over-squeezed spin states that are accessible by one-axis-twisting, as a function of the preparation time. We further determine how the scaling is modified by relevant decoherence processes and predict a discontinuous change of the quantum gain at a critical preparation time that depends on the noise. Our analytical results provide recipes for optimal and feasible implementations of quantum enhancements with non-Gaussian spin states in existing experiments, well beyond the reach of spin squeezing.

Producing and storing spin-squeezed states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We study the dynamical generation and storage of spin squeezed states, as well as more entangled states up to macroscopic superpositions, in a system composed of a few ultra-cold atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The system, initially in the superfluid phase with each atom in a superposition of two internal states, is first dynamically entangled by atom-atom interactions then adiabatically brought to the Mott-insulator phase with one atom per site where the quantum correlations are stored. Exact numerical diagonalization allows us to explore the structure of the stored states by looking at various correlation functions, on site and between different sites, both at zero temperature and at finite temperature, as it could be done in an experiment with a quantum-gas microscope.

Penning collisions of laser-cooled metastable helium atoms

We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in a systematic way for several laser detunings ranging from -5 to -30 MHz and at different intensities, by monitoring the decay of the trap fluorescence. The dependence of the two-body loss rate coefficient $β$ on the excited state ($2^3P_2$) and metastable state ($2^3S_1$) populations is also investigated. From these results we infer a rather uniform rate constant $K_{sp}=(1{\pm}0.4)\times10^{-7}$ cm$^3$/s.

Efficient magneto-optical trapping of a metastable helium gas

This article presents a new experiment aiming at BEC of metastable helium atoms. It describes the design of a high flux discharge source of atoms and a robust laser system using a DBR diode coupled with a high power Yb doped fiber amplifier for manipulating the beam of metastable atoms. The atoms are trapped in a small quartz cell in an extreme high vacuum. The trapping design uses an additional laser (repumper) and allows the capture of a large number of metastable helium atoms (approximately $10^9$) in a geometry favorable for loading a tight magnetostatic trap.

Dynamics of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

We analize the dynamics of two trapped interacting Bose-Einstein condensates and indentify two regimes for the evolution: the regime of slow periodic oscillations and the regime of strong non-linear mixing leading to the damping of the relative motion of the condensates. We compare our predictions with an experiment recently performed at JILA.
