On some results by S. Belkov and I. Korepanov

This note is purely expositional and is a complement to math review MR2730150 to the paper Bel'kov, S. I.; Korepanov, I. G. Matrix solution of the pentagon equation with anticommuting variables, Teoret. i Matemat. Fizika, 163:3 (2010), 513-528. The authors consider purely mathematical problems of finding an invariant of a 3-manifold and finding certain identities. I tried to present in a clear way the statement of Theorem 1 and main definition from that paper. I bear no responsibility for results of that paper.

Embeddings of k-connected n-manifolds into R^{2n-k-1}

We obtain estimations for isotopy classes of embeddings of closed k-connected n-manifolds into R^{2n-k-1} for n>2k+5 and k\ge0. This is done in terms of an exact sequence involving the Whitney invariants and an explicitly constructed action of H_{k+1}(N;Z_2) on the set of embeddings. (For k\ne1 classification results were obtained by algebraic methods without direct construction of embeddings or homology invariants.) The proof involves reduction to classification of embeddings of punctured manifold and uses parametric connected sum of embeddings.

Basic embeddings and Hilbert's 13th problem

This note is purely expository. In the course of the Kolmogorov-Arnold solution of Hilbert's 13th problem on superpositions there appeared the notion of basic embedding. A subset K of R^2 is basic if for each continuous function f:K->R there exist continuous functions g,h:R->R such that f(x,y)=g(x)+h(y) for each point (x,y) in K. We present descriptions of basic subsets of the plane (with a proof) and description of graphs basically embeddable into the plane (solutions of Arnold's and Sternfeld's problems). We present some results and open problems on the smooth version of the property of being basic. This note is accessible to undergraduates and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The two sections can be read independently on each other.

Basic embeddings and Hilbert's 13th problem on superpositions (in Russian)

This note is purely expository. We show how in the course of the Kolmogorov-Arnold solution of Hilbert's 13-th problem on superpositions there appeared the notion of a basic embedding. A subset K of R^2 is {\it basic} if for each continuous function f:K->R there exist continuous functions g,h:R->R such that f(x,y) = g(x) + h(y) for each point (x,y) in K. We present descriptions of basic subsets of the plane and graphs basically embeddable into the plane (solutions of Arnold's and Sternfeld's problems). We present some results and open problems on the smooth version of the property of being basic. This note is accessible to undergraduates and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians.

A classification of smooth embeddings of 3-manifolds in 6-space

We work in the smooth category. If there are knotted embeddings S^n\to R^m, which often happens for 2m<3n+4, then no concrete complete description of embeddings of n-manifolds into R^m up to isotopy was known, except for disjoint unions of spheres. Let N be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold. Our main result is the following description of the set Emb^6(N) of embeddings N\to R^6 up to isotopy. The Whitney invariant W : Emb^6(N) \to H_1(N;Z) is surjective. For each u \in H_1(N;Z) the Kreck invariant η_u : W^{-1}u \to Z_{d(u)} is bijective, where d(u) is the divisibility of the projection of u to the free part of H_1(N;Z). The group Emb^6(S^3) is isomorphic to Z (Haefliger). This group acts on Emb^6(N) by embedded connected sum. It was proved that the orbit space of this action maps under W bijectively to H_1(N;Z) (by Vrabec and Haefliger's smoothing theory). The new part of our classification result is determination of the orbits of the action. E. g. for N=RP^3 the action is free, while for N=S^1\times S^2 we construct explicitly an embedding f : N \to R^6 such that for each knot l:S^3\to R^6 the embedding f#l is isotopic to f. Our proof uses new approaches involving the Kreck modified surgery theory or the Boechat-Haefliger formula for smoothing obstruction.

A new invariant and parametric connected sum of embeddings

We define an isotopy invariant of embeddings N -> R^m of manifolds into Euclidean space. This invariant together with the α-invariant of Haefliger-Wu is complete in the dimension range where the α-invariant could be incomplete. We also define parametric connected sum of certain embeddings (analogous to surgery). This allows to obtain new completeness results for the α-invariant and the following estimation of isotopy classes of embeddings. For the piecewise-linear category, a (3n-2m+2)-connected n-manifold N and (4n+4)/3 < m < (3n+3)/2 each preimage of α-invariant injects into a quotient of H_{3n-2m+3}(N), where the coefficients are Z for m-n odd and Z_2 for m-n even.

Classification of embeddings below the metastable dimension

We develop a new approach to the classical problem on isotopy classification of embeddings of manifolds into Euclidean spaces. This approach involves studying of a new embedding invariant, of almost-embeddings and of smoothing, as well as explicit constructions of embeddings. Using this approach we obtain complete concrete classification results below the metastable dimension range, i.e. where the configuration spaces invariant of Haefliger-Wu is incomplete. Note that all known complete concrete classification results, except for the Haefliger classification of links and smooth knots, can be obtained using the Haefliger-Wu invariant. More precisely, we classify embeddings S^p x S^{2l-1} -> R^{3l+p} for p 1 and for the smooth category). A particular case states that the set of piecewise-linear isotopy classes of piecewise-linear embeddings (or, equivalently, the set of almost smooth isotopy classes of smooth embeddings) S^1 x S^3 -> R^7 has a geometrically defined group structure, and with this group structure is isomorphic to Z + Z + Z_2. We exhibit an example disproving the conjecture proposed by Viro and others on the completeness of the multiple Haefliger-Wu invariant for classification of PL embeddings of connected manifolds in codimension at least 3.

A characterization of submanifolds by a homogeneity condition

A very short proof of the following smooth homogeneity theorem of D. Repovs, E. V. Scepin and the author is presented. Let N be a locally compact subset of a smooth manifold M. Assume that for each two points x,y in N there exist their neighborhoods Ux and Uy in M and a diffeomorphism h : Ux \to Uy such that h(x)=y and h (Ux \cap N) = Uy \cap N. Then N is a smooth submanifold of M.

Codimension two PL embeddings of spheres with nonstandard regular neighborhoods

For a given polyhedron $K\subset M$ the notation $R_M(K)$ denotes a regular neighborhood of $K$ in $M$. We study the following problem: find all pairs $(m,k)$ such that if $K$ is a compact $k$-polyhedron and $M$ a PL $m$-manifold, then $R_M(fK)\cong R_M(gK)$, for each two homotopic PL embeddings $f,g:K\to M$. We prove that $R_{S^{k+2}}(S^k)\not\cong S^k\times D^2$ for each $k\ge2$ and {\it some} PL sphere $S^k\subset S^{k+2}$ (even for {\it any} PL sphere $S^k\subset S^{k+2}$ having an isolated non-locally flat point with the singularity $S^{k-1}\subset S^{k+1}$ such that $π_1(S^{k+1}-S^{k-1})\not\cong\Z$).

Embedding and knotting of manifolds in Euclidean spaces

A clear understanding of topology of higher-dimensional objects is important in many branches of both pure and applied mathematics. In this survey we attempt to present some results of higher-dimensional topology in a way which makes clear the visual and intuitive part of the constructions and the arguments. In particular, we show how abstract algebraic constructions appear naturally in the study of geometric problems. Before giving a general construction, we illustrate the main ideas in simple but important particular cases, in which the essence is not veiled by technicalities. More specifically, we present several classical and modern results on the embedding and knotting of manifolds in Euclidean space. We state many concrete results (in particular, recent explicit classification of knotted tori). Their statements (but not proofs!) are simple and accessible to non-specialists. We outline a general approach to embeddings via the classical van Kampen-Shapiro-Wu-Haefliger-Weber 'deleted product' obstruction. This approach reduces the isotopy classification of embeddings to the homotopy classification of equivariant maps, and so implies the above concrete results. We describe the revival of interest in this beautiful branch of topology, by presenting new results in this area (of Freedman, Krushkal, Teichner, Segal, Spiez and the author): a generalization the Haefliger-Weber embedding theorem below the metastable dimension range and examples showing that other analogues of this theorem are false outside the metastable dimension range.
