Errata for ``Global existence and scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on Schwarzschild manifolds'', ``Semilinear wave equations on the Schwarzschild manifold I: Local Decay Estimates'', and ``The wave equation on the Schwarzschild metric II: Local Decay for the spin 2 Regge Wheeler equation''

In ``Global existence and scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on Schwarzschild manifolds'' (math-ph/0002030), ``Semilinear wave equations on the Schwarzschild manifold I: Local Decay Estimates'' (gr-qc/0310091), and ``The wave equation on the Schwarzschild metric II: Local Decay for the spin 2 Regge Wheeler equation'' (gr-qc/0310066), local decay estimates were proven for the (decoupled) Schrodinger, wave, and Regge-Wheeler equations on the Schwarzschild manifold, using commutator methods. Here, we correct a step in the commutator argument. The corrected argument works either for radial semilinear equations or general linear equations. This recovers the results in math-ph/0002030 and gr-qc/0310066, but does not recover the non radial, large data, semilinear result asserted in the gr-qc/0310091.

Phase Space Analysis on some Black Hole Manifolds

The Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom solutions to Einstein's equations describe space- times which contain spherically symmetric black holes. We consider solutions to the linear wave equation in the exterior of a fixed black hole space- time of this type. We show that for solutions with initial data which decay at infinite, a weighted $L^6$ norm in space decays like $t^{-1/3}$. This weight vanishes at the event horizon, but not at infinite.

Theory of Nonlinear Dispersive Waves and Selection of the Ground State

A theory of time dependent nonlinear dispersive equations of the Schroedinger / Gross-Pitaevskii and Hartree type is developed. The short, intermediate and large time behavior is found, by deriving nonlinear Master equations (NLME), governing the evolution of the mode powers, and by a novel multi-time scale analysis of these equations. The scattering theory is developed and coherent resonance phenomena and associated lifetimes are derived. Applications include BEC large time dynamics and nonlinear optical systems. The theory reveals a nonlinear transition phenomenon, ``selection of the ground state'', and NLME predicts the decay of excited state, with half its energy transferred to the ground state and half to radiation modes. Our results predict the recent experimental observations of Mandelik et. al. in nonlinear optical waveguides.

Nonlinear effects in tunnelling escape in N-body quantum systems

We consider the problem of tunneling escape of particles from a multiparticle system confined within a potential trap. The process is nonlinear due to the interparticle interaction. Using the hydrodynamic representation for the quantum equations of the multiparticle system we find the tunneling rate and time evolutions of the number of trapped particles for different nonlinearity values.

Using untagged B^0 -> D K_S to determine gamma

It is shown that the weak phase gamma=arg(-V_{ud}V^*_{ub}V_{cb}V_{cd}^*) can be determined using only untagged decays B/Bbar--> D K_S. In order to reduce the uncertainty in gamma, we suggest combining information from B^{+-}--> DK^{+-} and from untagged B^0 decays, where the D meson is observed in common decay modes. Theoretical assumptions, which may further reduce the statistical error, are also discussed.

Selection of the ground state for nonlinear Schroedinger equations

We prove for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger systems (NLS) having two nonlinear bound states that the (generic) large time behavior is characterized by decay of the excited state, asymptotic approach to the nonlinear ground state and dispersive radiation. Our analysis elucidates the mechanism through which initial conditions which are very near the excited state branch evolve into a (nonlinear) ground state, a phenomenon known as {\it ground state selection}. Key steps in the analysis are the introduction of a particular linearization and the derivation of a normal form which reflects the dynamics on all time scales and yields, in particular, nonlinear Master equations. Then, a novel multiple time scale dynamic stability theory is developed. Consequently, we give a detailed description of the asymptotic behavior of the two bound state NLS for all small initial data. The methods are general and can be extended to treat NLS with more than two bound states and more general nonlinearities including those of Hartree-Fock type.

Asymptotic stability of N-soliton states of NLS

The focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation possesses special non-dispersive solitary type solutions, solitons. Under certain spectral assumptions we show existence and asymptotic stability of solutions with the asymptoic profile (as time goes to infinity) of a linear combination of N non-colliding solitons.

Resonance Theory for Schroedinger Operators

Resonances which result from perturbation of embedded eigenvalues are studied by time dependent methods. A general theory is developed, with new and weaker conditions, allowing for perturbations of threshold eigenvalues and relaxed Fermi Golden rule. The exponential decay rate of resonances is addressed; its uniqueness in the time dependent picture is shown is certain cases. The relation to the existence of meromorphic continuation of the properly weighted Green's function to time dependent resonance is further elucidated, by giving an equivalent time dependent asymptotic expansion of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. \keywords{Resonances; Time-dependent Schrödinger equation}

Report of Snowmass 2001 Working Group E2 : Electron-positron Colliders from the $ϕ$ to the Z

We report on the status and plans of experiments now running or proposed for electron-positron colliders at energies between the $ϕ$ and the Z. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ B and charm factories we considered were PEP-II/BABAR, KEKB/Belle, superKEK, SuperBABAR, and CESR-c/CLEO-c. We reviewed the programs at the $ϕ$ factory at Frascati and the proposed PEP-N facility at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We studied the prospects for B physics with a dedicated linear collider Z factory, associated with the TESLA high energy linear collider. In all cases, we compared the physics reach of these facilities with that of alternative experiments at hadron colliders or fixed target facilities.

Metastability of Breather Modes of Time-Dependent Potentials

We study the solutions of linear Schroedinger equations in which the potential energy is a periodic function of time and is sufficiently localized in space. We consider the potential to be close to one that is time periodic and yet explicitly solvable. A large family of such potentials has been constructed and the corresponding Schroedinger equation solved by Miller and Akhmediev. Exact bound states, or breather modes, exist in the unperturbed problem and are found to be generically metastable in the presence of small periodic perturbations. Thus, these states are long-lived but eventually decay. On a time scale of order $ε^{-2}$, where $ε$ is a measure of the perturbation size, the decay is exponential, with a rate of decay given by an analogue of Fermi's golden rule. For times of order $ε^{-1}$ the breather modes are frequency shifted. This behavior is derived first by classical multiple-scale expansions, and then in certain circumstances we are able to apply the rigorous theory developed by Soffer and Weinstein and extended by Kirr and Weinstein to justify the expansions and also provide longer-time asymptotics that indicate eventual dispersive decay of the bound states with behavior that is algebraic in time. As an application, we use our techniques to study the frequency dependence of the guidance properties of certain optical waveguides. We supplement our results with numerical experiments.

Resonances, Radiation Damping and Instability in Hamiltonian Nonlinear Wave Equations

We consider a class of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations which are Hamiltonian and are perturbations of linear dispersive equations. The unperturbed dynamical system has a bound state, a spatially localized and time periodic solution. We show that, for generic nonlinear Hamiltonian perturbations, all small amplitude solutions decay to zero as time tends to infinity at an anomalously slow rate. In particular, spatially localized and time-periodic solutions of the linear problem are destroyed by generic nonlinear Hamiltonian perturbations via slow radiation of energy to infinity. These solutions can therefore be thought of as metastable states. The main mechanism is a nonlinear resonant interaction of bound states (eigenfunctions) and radiation (continuous spectral modes), leading to energy transfer from the discrete to continuum modes. This is in contrast to the KAM theory in which appropriate nonresonance conditions imply the persistence of invariant tori. A hypothesis ensuring that such a resonance takes place is a nonlinear analogue of the Fermi golden rule, arising in the theory of resonances in quantum mechanics. The techniques used involve: (i) a time-dependent method developed by the authors for the treatment of the quantum resonance problem and perturbations of embedded eigenvalues, (ii) a generalization of the Hamiltonian normal form appropriate for infinite dimensional dispersive systems and (iii) ideas from scattering theory. The arguments are quite general and we expect them to apply to a large class of systems which can be viewed as the interaction of finite dimensional and infinite dimensional dispersive dynamical systems, or as a system of particles coupled to a field.

Nonautonomous Hamiltonians

We present a theory of resonances for a class of non-autonomous Hamiltonians to treat the structural instability of spatially localized and time-periodic solutions associated with an unperturbed autonomous Hamiltonian. The mechanism of instability is radiative decay, due to resonant coupling of the discrete modes to the continuum modes by the time-dependent perturbation. This results in a slow transfer of energy from the discrete modes to the continuum. The rate of decay of solutions is slow and hence the decaying bound states can be viewed as metastable. The ideas are closely related to the authors' work on (i) a time dependent approach to the instability of eigenvalues embedded in the continuous spectra, and (ii) resonances, radiation damping and instability in Hamiltonian nonlinear wave equations. The theory is applied to a general class of Schrödinger equations. The phenomenon of ionization may be viewed as a resonance problem of the type we consider and we apply our theory to find the rate of ionization, spectral line shift and local decay estimates for such Hamiltonians.
