Composition law of $κ$-entropy for statistically independent systems

The intriguing and still open question concerning the composition law of $κ$-entropy $S_κ(f)=\frac{1}{2κ}\sum_i (f_i^{1-κ}-f_i^{1+κ})$ with $0<κ<1$ and $\sum_i f_i =1$ is here reconsidered and solved. It is shown that, for a statistical system described by the probability distribution $f=\{ f_{ij}\}$, made up of two statistically independent subsystems, described through the probability distributions $p=\{ p_i\}$ and $q=\{ q_j\}$, respectively, with $f_{ij}=p_iq_j$, the joint entropy $S_κ(p\,q)$ can be obtained starting from the $S_κ(p)$ and $S_κ(q)$ entropies, and additionally from the entropic functionals $S_κ(p/e_κ)$ and $S_κ(q/e_κ)$, $e_κ$ being the $κ$-Napier number. The composition law of the $κ$-entropy is given in closed form, and emerges as a one-parameter generalization of the ordinary additivity law of Boltzmann-Shannon entropy recovered in the $κ\rightarrow 0$ limit.

Mapping Images with the Coherence Length Diagrams

Statistical pattern recognition methods based on the Coherence Length Diagram (CLD) have been proposed for medical image analyses, such as quantitative characterisation of human skin textures, and for polarized light microscopy of liquid crystal textures. Further investigations are made on image maps originated from such diagram and some examples related to irregularity of microstructures are shown.

Undulation textures at the phase transitions of some alkyloxybenzoic acids

We observed undulated smectic textures for some compounds of the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic (nOBAC) acid series, at transitions between the smectic and the isotropic phase and between the smectic and nematic phase. Studied compounds were 12OBAC, 16OBAC and a binary mixture of 12- and 16OBAC. The undulations are dressing a usual Schlieren texture. In the case of the binary mixture, an interesting fingerprint pattern is observed too.

An image processing analysis of skin textures

Colour and coarseness of skin are visually different. When image processing is involved in the skin analysis, it is important to quantitatively evaluate such differences using texture features. In this paper, we discuss a texture analysis and measurements based on a statistical approach to the pattern recognition. Grain size and anisotropy are evaluated with proper diagrams. The possibility to determine the presence of pattern defects is also discussed.

Growth of toric domains in the smectic phase of oxadiazoles

In a previous paper (Phase Transitions, 80(9), 987, 2007) we discussed the smectic and nematic textures of some mesomorphic oxadiazole compounds with terminal Cl-substituent. Optical microscope investigations showed a very interesting behaviour of smectic and nematic phases; the smectic phase has fan-shaped and toric textures and the nematic phase has spherulitic domains, which disappear as the sample is further heated, the texture changing into a smooth one. Here, we investigate four oxadiazole compounds with the same structure but terminal Br-substituent. The behaviour of the smectic and nematic phases is like that observed in the compounds with Cl. The focus of the paper is on the growth of toric domains from the nematic melt and on the role of defects in the domain structure.

Phonons in lattices with rod-like particles

The paper studies the modes of vibrations of a lattice with rod-like particles, in a continuum model where the sites of the lattice are the connections among strings and rigid rods. In these structures then, translational and rotational degrees of freedom are strongly coupled. We will discuss in particular two-dimensional lattices with auxetic-like behaviour. Auxetics are materials with a negative Poisson elastic parameter, meaning that they have a lateral extension, instead to shrink, when they are stretched. We assume as "auxetic-like" two-dimensional structures, structures which do not collapse, when stretched in one of the in-plane directions. The presence of rigid rod-like particles in the lattice prevents the shrinking of the membrane. Complete bandgaps between acoustic and optical modes are observed in analogy with the behaviour of crystalline materials.

Thermal electric effects and heat generation in polypyrrole coated PET fabrics

Polypyrrole chemically synthesized on PET gives rise to textiles with a high electric conductivity, suitable for several applications from antistatics to electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Here, we discuss investigations on thermal electric performances of the polypyrrole coated PET in a wide range of temperatures above room temperature. The Seebeck coefficient turns out to be comparable with that of metal thermocouple materials. Since polypyrrole shows extremely low thermal diffusivities regardless of the electrical conductivity, the low thermal conductivity gives significant advantage to the thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT, comparable with that of some traditional inorganic thermoelectric materials. The heat generation is also investigated for possible heating textile devices.

Fan-shaped and toric textures of mesomorphic oxadiazoles

When a family of non symmetrical heterocycled compounds is investigated, a variety of mesophases can be observed with rather different features. Here we report the behaviour of seven different members among a family of such materials, that consists of mesomorphic oxadiazole compounds. In two of these compounds, the optical microscope investigation shows very interesting behaviours. In their smectic phases, fan-shaped and toric textures, sometimes with periodic instability, are observed. Moreover, the nematic phase displays a texture transition. Texture transitions have been previously observed only inside the nematic phase of some compounds belonging to the families of the oxybenzoic and cyclohexane acids. In these two oxadiazole compounds we can observe what we define as a "toric nematic phase", heating the samples from the smectic phase. The toric nematic texture disappears as the sample is further heated, changing into a smooth texture.

Phonons in honeycomb and auxetic two-dimensional lattices

The modes of vibrations in honeycomb and auxetic structures are studied, with models in which the lattice is represented by a planar network where sites are connected by strings and rigid rods. The auxetic network is obtained modifying a model proposed by Evans et al. in 1991, and used to explain the negative Poisson's ratio of auxetic materials. This relevant property means that the materials have a lateral extension, instead to shrink, when they are stretched. For what concerns the acoustic properties of these structures, they absorb noise and vibrations more efficiently than non-auxetic equivalents. The acoustic and optical dispersions obtained in the case of the auxetic model are compared with the dispersions displayed by a conventional honeycomb network. It is possible to see that the phonon dispersions of the auxetic model possess a complete bandgap and that the Goldstone mode group velocity is strongly dependent on the direction of propagation. The presence of a complete bandgap can explain some experimental observations on the sound propagation properties of the auxetic materials.

Vector field visualization with streamlines

We have recently developed an algorithm for vector field visualization with oriented streamlines, able to depict the flow directions everywhere in a dense vector field and the sense of the local orientations. The algorithm has useful applications in the visualization of the director field in nematic liquid crystals. Here we propose an improvement of the algorithm able to enhance the visualization of the local magnitude of the field. This new approach of the algorithm is compared with the same procedure applied to the Line Integral Convolution (LIC) visualization.

Non-photorealistic image rendering with a labyrinthine tiling

The paper describes a new image processing for a non-photorealistic rendering. The algorithm is based on a random generation of gray tones and competing statistical requirements. The gray tone value of each pixel in the starting image is replaced selecting among randomly generated tone values, according to the statistics of nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor pixels. Two competing conditions for replacing the tone values - one position on the local mean value the other on the local variance - produce a peculiar pattern on the image. This pattern has a labyrinthine tiling aspect. For certain subjects, the pattern enhances the look of the image.

The intermodal networks: a survey on intermodalism

A new and rather independent research field is now emerging on intermodalism, because intermodalism, that is the intermodal transportation, must study the behavior of systems different from single-mode transport systems. In fact, the importance of this new research field, its potential interdisciplinary of modeling the problem with the science of complex networks, are not yet completely appreciated by the scientific community. This is due to several reasons, among others the lack of a common background and a rather cumbersome approach of operation research to the modeling of transportation. In this paper we review the concept of intermodalism and the approach to intermodalism in the operation research field. Then we discuss the intermodal networks in the framework of real world networks to understand the behavior of intermodal systems as a whole.

Lattice specific heat of carbon nanotubes

The lattice specific heat of carbon nanotubes is evaluated within the microscopic model proposed by Mahan and Jeon, published in the Physical Review B, in 2004. Phonons are considered for a single wall carbon nanotube in the armchair configuration. As expected, low temperature and high temperature regions show different behavior of specific heat. Carbon nanotubes are also displaying a very interesting lattice transport depending on the diameter, with a rather high thermal conductivity for small diameters.

Texture transitions in the liquid crystalline alkyloxybenzoic acid 6OBAC

The 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid 6OBAC has a very rich variety of crystalline structures and two nematic sub-phases, characterised by different textures. It is a material belonging to a family of liquid crystals formed by hydrogen bonded molecules, the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acids indicates the homologue number). The homologues with n ranging from 7 to 13 display both smectic C and N phases. In spite of the absence of a smectic phase, 6OBAC exhibits two sub-phases with different textures, as it happens in other materials of the homologue series which possess the smectic phase. This is the first material that exhibits a texture transition in a nematic phase directly originated from a crystal phase. Here we present the results of an image processing assisted optical investigation to characterise the textures and the transitions between textures. This processing is necessary to discriminate between crystal modifications and nematic sub-phases.

Texture transitions in binary mixtures of 6OBAC with compounds of its homologous series

Recently we have observed in compounds of the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid series, with the homologous index n ranging from 6 to 9, a texture transition in the nematic range which subdivides the nematic phase in two sub-phases displaying different textures in polarised light analysis. To investigate a persistence of texture transitions in nematic phases, we prepared binary mixtures of 4,6-alkyloxybenzoic acid (6OBAC) with other members (7-,8-,9-,12-, 16OBAC) of its homologous series. Binary mixtures exhibit a broadening in the temperature ranges of both smectic and nematic phases. A nematic temperature range of 75 C is observed. In the nematic phase, in spite of the microscopic disorder introduced by mixing two components, the polarised light optics analysis of the liquid crystal cells reveals a texture transition. In the case of the binary mixture of 6OBAC with 12OBAC and with 16OBAC, that is of compounds with monomers of rather different lengths, the texture transition temperature is not homogeneous in the cell, probably due to a local variation in the relative concentrations of compounds.

Electromagnetic shielding with polypyrrole-coated fabrics

Several shielding applications, to protect human health and electronic devices against dangerous effects of electromagnetic radiation, require solutions that fabrics can suitably fulfill. Here, we will investigate the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of polypyrrole-coated polyester textiles, in the frequency range 100-1000 MHz. Insertion losses for several conductive fabrics with different surface resistivity ranging from 40 Ohm till the very low value of 3 Ohm were evaluated with a dual-tem cell. Correlations between the shielding effectiveness and the conductivity of composites are also discussed.
