Diagram genus, generators and applications

We continue the study of the genus of knot diagrams, deriving a new description of generators using Hirasawa's algorithm. This description leads to good estimates on the maximal number of crossings of generators and allows us to complete their classification for knots of genus 4. As applications of the genus 4 classification, we establish non-triviality of the skein polynomial on $k$-almost positive knots for $k\le 4$, and of the Jones polynomial for $k\le 3$. For $k\le 4$, we classify the occurring achiral knots, and prove a trivializability result for $k$-almost positive unknot diagrams. This yields also estimates on the number of unknotting Reidemeister moves. We describe the positive knots of signature (up to) 4. Using a study of the skein polynomial, we prove the exactness of the Morton-Williams-Franks braid index inequality and the existence of a minimal string Bennequin surface for alternating knots up to genus 4. We also prove for such knots conjectures of Hoste and Fox about the roots and coefficients of the Alexander polynomial.

Alexander polynomials and hyperbolic volume of arborescent links

We realize a given (monic) Alexander polynomial by a (fibered) hyperbolic arborescent knot and link of any number of components, and by infinitely many such links of at least 4 components. As a consequence, a Mahler measure minimizing polynomial, if it exists, is realized as the Alexander polynomial of a fibered hyperbolic link of at least 2 components. For given polynomial, we give also an upper bound on the minimal hyperbolic volume of knots/links, and contrarily, construct knots of arbitrarily large volume, which are arborescent, or have given free genus at least 2.

Properties of closed 3-braids

We show that 3-braid links with given (non-zero) Alexander or Jones polynomial are finitely many, and can be effectively determined. We classify among closed 3-braids strongly quasipositive and fibered ones, and show that 3-braid links have a unique incompressible Seifert surface. We also classify the positive braid words with Morton-Williams-Franks bound 3 and show that closed positive braids of braid index 3 are closed positive 3-braids. For closed braids on more strings, we study the alternating links occurring. In particular we classify those of braid index 4, and show that their Morton-Williams-Franks inequality is exact. Finally, we use the Burau representation to obtain new braid index criteria, including an efficient 4-braid test.

Non-triviality of the Jones polynomial and the crossing numbers of amphicheiral knots

Using an involved study of the Jones polynomial, we determine, as our main result, the crossing numbers of (prime) amphicheiral knots. As further applications, we show that several classes of links, including semiadequate links and Whitehead doubles of semiadequate knots, have non-trivial Jones polynomial. We also prove that there are infinitely many positive knots with no positive minimal crossing diagrams. Some relations to the twist number of a link, Mahler measure and the hyperbolic volume are given, for example explicit upper bounds on the volume for Montesinos and 3-braid links in terms of their Jones polynomial.

Tait's conjectures and odd crossing number amphicheiral knots

We give a brief historical overview of the Tait conjectures, made 120 years ago in the course of his pioneering work in tabulating the simplest knots, and solved a century later using the Jones polynomial. We announce the solution, again based on a substantial study of the Jones polynomial, of one (possibly his last remaining?) problem of Tait, with the construction of amphicheiral knots of almost all odd crossing numbers. An application to the non-triviality problem for the Jones polynomial is also outlined.

Some examples related to knot sliceness

It is known that the linking form on the 2-cover of slice knots has a metabolizer. We show that several weaker conditions, or some other conditions related to sliceness, do not imply the existence of a metabolizer. We then show how the Rudolph-Bennequin inequality can be used indirectly to prove that some knots are not slice.

5-moves and Montesinos links

We classify the Montesinos links up to mutation and 5-move equivalence, and obtain from this a Jones and Kauffman polynomial test for a Montesinos link.

Problems on invariants of knots and 3-manifolds

This is a list of open problems on invariants of knots and 3-manifolds with expositions of their history, background, significance, or importance. This list was made by editing open problems given in problem sessions in the workshop and seminars on `Invariants of Knots and 3-Manifolds' held at Kyoto in 2001.

Polynomial values, the linking form and unknotting numbers

We show how the signed evaluations of link polynomials can be used to calculate unknotting numbers. We use the Jones-Rong value of the Brandt-Lickorish-Millett-Ho polynomial Q to calculate the unknotting numbers of 8_{16}, 9_{49} and 6 further new entries in Kawauchi's tables. Another method is developed by applying and extending the linking form criterion of Lickorish. This leads to several conjectured relations between the Jones value of Q and the linking form.

A property of the skein polynomial with an application to contact geometry

We prove a finiteness property of the values of the skein polynomial of homogeneous knots which allows to establish large classes of such knots to have arbitrarily unsharp Bennequin inequality (for the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of any of their Legendrian embeddings in the standard contact structure of R^3), and a give a short proof that there are only finitely many among these knots that have given genus and given braid index.

On polynomials and surfaces of variously positive links

It is known that the minimal degree of the Jones polynomial of a positive knot is equal to its genus, and the minimal coefficient is 1. We extend this result to almost positive links and partly identify the 3 following coefficients for special types of positive links. We also give counterexamples to the Jones polynomial-ribbon genus conjectures for a quasipositive knot. Then we show that the Alexander polynomial completely detects the minimal genus and fiber property of canonical Seifert surfaces associated to almost positive (and almost alternating) link diagrams.

Knots of genus two

We classify all knot diagrams of genus two and three, and give applications to positive, alternating and homogeneous knots, including a classification of achiral genus 2 alternating knots, slice or achiral 2-almost positive knots, a proof of the 3- and 4-move conjectures, and the calculation of the maximal hyperbolic volume for weak genus two knots. We also study the values of the link polynomials at roots of unity, extending denseness results of Jones. Using these values, examples of knots with unsharp Morton (weak genus) inequality are found. Several results are generalized to arbitrary weak genus.

Square numbers, spanning trees and invariants of achiral knots

We give constructions to realize an odd number, which is representable as sum of two squares, as determinant of an achiral knot, thus proving that these are exactly the numbers occurring as such determinants. Later we study which numbers occur as determinants of prime alternating achiral knots, and obtain a complete result for perfect squares. Using the checkerboard coloring, then an application is given to the number of spanning trees in planar self-dual graphs. Another application are some enumeration results on achiral rational knots. Finally, we describe the leading coefficients of the Alexander and skein polynomial of alternating achiral knots.

Generating functions, Fibonacci numbers and rational knots

We describe rational knots with any of the possible combinations of the properties (a)chirality, (non-)positivity, (non-)fiberedness, and unknotting number one (or higher), and determine exactly their number for a given number of crossings in terms of their generating functions. We show in particular how Fibonacci numbers occur in the enumeration of fibered achiral and unknotting number one rational knots. Then we show how to enumerate rational knots by crossing number and genus and/or signature. This allows to determine the distribution of these invariants among rational knots. We give also an application to the enumeration of lens spaces.

Vassiliev invariants and rational knots of unknotting number one

Introducing a way to modify knots using $n$-trivial rational tangles, we show that knots with given values of Vassiliev invariants of bounded degree can have arbitrary unknotting number (extending a recent result of Ohyama, Taniyama and Yamada). The same result is shown for 4-genera and finite reductions of the homology group of the double branched cover. Closer consideration is given to rational knots, where it is shown that the number of $n$-trivial rational knots of at most $k$ crossings is for any $n$ asymptotically at least $C^{(\ln k)^2}$ for any $C<\sqrt[2\ln 2]{e}$.

On the crossing number of positive knots and braids and braid index criteria of Jones and Morton-Williams-Franks

We give examples of knots with some unusual properties of the crossing number of positive diagrams or strand number of positive braid representations. In particular we show that positive braid knots may not have positive minimal (strand number) braid representations, giving a counterpart to results of Franks-Williams and Murasugi. Other examples answer questions of Cromwell on homogeneous and (partially) of Adams on almost alternating knots. We give a counterexample to, and a corrected version of a theorem of Jones on the Alexander polynomial of 4-braid knots. We also give an example of a knot on which all previously applied braid index criteria fail to estimate sharply (from below) the braid index. A relation between (generalizations of) such examples and a conjecture of Jones that a minimal braid representation has unique writhe is discussed. Finally, we give a counterexample to Morton's conjecture relating the genus and degree of the skein polynomial.

The skein polynomial of closed 3-braids

Using the band representation of the 3-strand braid group, it is shown that the genus of 3-braid links can be read off their skein polynomial. Some applications are given, in particular a simple proof of Morton's conjectured inequality and a condition to decide that some polynomials, like the one of 9_{49}, are not admitted by 3-braid links. Finally, alternating links of braid index 3 are classified.

Gauss sums on almost positive knots

Using the Fiedler-Polyak-Viro Gauss diagram formulas we study the Vassiliev invariants of degree 2 and 3 on almost positive knots. As a consequence we show that the number of almost positive knots of given genus or unknotting number grows polynomially in the crossing number, and also recover and extend, inter alia to their untwisted Whitehead doubles, previous results on the polynomials and signatures of such knots. In particular, we prove that there are no achiral almost positive knots and classify all almost positive diagrams of the unknot. We give an application to contact geometry (Legendrian knots) and property P.
