Magnetization driven metal - insulator transition in strongly disordered Ge:Mn magnetic semiconductors

We report on the temperature and field driven metal-insulator transition in disordered Ge:Mn magnetic semiconductors accompanied by magnetic ordering, magnetoresistance reaching thousands of percents and suppression of the extraordinary Hall effect by a magnetic field. Magnetoresistance isotherms are shown to obey a universal scaling law with a single scaling parameter depending on temperature and fabrication. We argue that the strong magnetic disorder leads to localization of charge carriers and is the origin of the unusual properties of Ge:Mn alloys.

Spin Dynamics of the Spin-1/2 Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2

We have performed thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the S=1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Zn Cu_3 (OH)_6 Cl_2. The susceptibility indicates a Curie-Weiss temperature of ~ -300 K; however, no magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals a spectrum of low energy spin excitations with no observable gap down to 0.1 meV. The specific heat at low-T follows a power law with exponent less than or equal to 1. These results suggest that an unusual spin-liquid state with essentially gapless excitations is realized in this kagome lattice system.

Electronic Instabilities in Shape-Memory Alloys

Using a variety of thermodynamic measurements made in magnetic fields, we show evidence that the diffusionless transition (DT) in many shape-memory alloys is related to significant changes in the electronic structure. We investigate three alloys that show the shape-memory effect (In-24 at.% Tl, AuZn, and U-26 at.% Nb). We observe that the DT is significantly altered in these alloys by the application of a magnetic field. Specifically, the DT in InTl-24 at.% shows a decrease in the DT temperature with increasing magnetic field. Further investigations of AuZn were performed using an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Quantum oscillations in the speed of the longitudinal sound waves propagating in the [110] direction indicated a strong acoustic de Haas-van Alphen-type effect and give information about part of the Fermi surface.

H-T phase diagram of the metamagnetic transition in $URu_2Si_2$, measured in high d. c. magnetic fields

We have studied the ultrasonic velocity and ac susceptibility of $URu_2Si_2$ in d. c. magnetic fields up to 45T. A significant difference between the constructed H-T phase diagram and that extracted from earlier pulsed fields measurements can be explained in terms of a large magnetocaloric effect. A hysteresis of metamagnetic transition at low temperatures and a new phase separation line have been observed for the first time.
