Inclusive production of $J/ψ$ meson in proton-proton collisions at BNL RHIC

Inclusive cross sections for $J/ψ$ production in proton-proton collisions were calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach for the RHIC energy. Several mechanisms were considered, including direct color-singlet mechanism, radiative decays of $χ_c$ mesons, decays of $ψ'$, open-charm associated production of $J/ψ$ as well as weak decays of B mesons. Different unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature were used. We find that radiative $χ_c$ decays and direct color-singlet contributions constitute the dominant mechanism of $J/ψ$ production. These process cannot be consistently treated within collinear-factorization approach. The results are compared with recent RHIC data. The new precise data at small transverse momenta impose stringent constraints on UGDFs. Some UGDFs are inconsistent with the new data. The Kwieciński UGDFs give the best description of the data. In order to verify the mechanism suggested here we propose $J/ψ$ -- jet correlation measurement and an independent measurement of $χ_c$ meson production in $π^+ π^-$ and/or $K^+ K^-$ decay channels. Finally, we address the issue of \J spin alignment.

Central exclusive production of scalar χ_c meson at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC energies

We calculate several differential distributions for exclusive double diffractive $χ_c(0^{++})$ production in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron and in proton-proton collisions at RHIC and LHC in terms of unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDFs) within the $k_t$-factorisation approach. The uncertainties of the Khoze-Martin-Ryskin approach are discussed in detail. The $g^* g^* \to χ_c(0^{++})$ transition vertex is calculated as a function of gluon virtualities applying the standard pNRQCD technique. The off-shell effects are discussed and quantified. They lead to a reduction of the cross section by a factor 2--5, depending on the position in the phase space and UGDFs. Different models of UGDFs are used and the results are shown and discussed. The cross section for diffractive component depends strongly on UGDFs. We calculate also the differential distributions for the $γ^* γ^* \to χ_c(0^{++})$ fusion mechanism. The integrated cross section for photon-photon fusion is much smaller than that of diffractive origin. The two components have very different dependence on momentum transfers $t_1, t_2$ in the nucleon lines as well as azimuthal-angle correlations between both outgoing nucleons.

Exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ in proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering

Protons and antiprotons at collider energies are a source of high energy Weizsäcker--Williams photons. This may open a possibility to study exclusive photoproduction of heavy vector mesons at energies much larger than possible at the HERA accelerator. Here we present a detailed investigation of the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction in proton-proton (RHIC, LHC) and proton-antiproton (Tevatron) collisions. We calculate several differential distributions in $t_1, t_2, y, ϕ$, as well as transverse momentum distributions of $J/Ψ$'s. We discuss correlations in the azimuthal angle between outgoing protons or proton and antiproton as well as in the ($t_1, t_2$) space. Differently from electroproduction experiments, here both colliding beam particles can be a source of photons, and we find large interference terms in azimuthal angle distributions in a broad range of rapidities of the produced meson. We also include the spin--flip parts in the electromagnetic vertices. We discuss the effect of absorptive corrections on various distributions. Interestingly, absorption corrections induce a charge asymmetry in rapidity distributions, and are larger for $p p$ reactions than for the $p \bar p$ case. The reaction considered here constitutes an important nonreduceable background in recently proposed searches for odderon exchange.

Dijet correlations in $pp$ collisions at RHIC

We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for dijet correlations in proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as correlations in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of two jets. Some $k_t$-factorization subprocesses are included for the first time in the literature. Different unintegrated gluon/parton distributions are used in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UGDF/UPDF used. Limitations due to leading jet condition are discussed.

Heavy quark correlations in hadronic collisions

We discuss results of the $k_t$ - factorization approach for heavy quark-heavy antiquark correlations in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions for RHIC, Tevatron and LHC. We consider correlations in the azimuthal angle as well as in the two-dimensional space of transverse momentum of heavy quark and heavy antiquark. We compare results obtained with the help of different unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF) from the literature.

Photon-jet correlations in hadronic collisions

We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for photon-jet correlations in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of photon and jet. Different unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF) are included in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UPDFs used. The results of NLO collinear-factorization are shown for comparison.

$pp \to ppη'$ reaction at high energies

We discuss double-diffractive (double-elastic) production of the $η'$-meson in the $pp \to pη'p$ reaction within the formalism of unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDF). We estimate also the contribution of $γ^* γ^* \to η'$ fusion. The distributions in the Feynman $x_F$ (or rapidity), transferred four-momenta squared between initial and final protons ($t_1$, $t_2$) and azimuthal angle difference between outgoing protons ($Φ$) are calculated. The deviations from the $\sin^2(Φ)$ dependence predicted by one-step vector-vector-pseudoscalar coupling are quantified and discussed. The results are compared with the results of the WA102 collaboration at CERN. Most of the models of UGDF from the literature give too small cross section as compared to the WA102 data and predict angular distribution in relative azimuthal angle strongly asymmetric with respect to $π/2$ in disagreement with the WA102 data. This points to a different mechanism at the WA102 energy. Predictions for RHIC, Tevatron and LHC are given. We find that the normalization, $t_{1,2}$ dependences as well as deviations from $\sin^2(Φ)$ of double-diffractive double-elastic cross section are extremely sensitive to the choice of UGDF. Possible implications for UGDFs are discussed.

Parton transverse momenta and direct photon production in hadronic collisions at high energies

The invariant cross sections for direct photon production in hadron-hadron collisions are calculated for several initial energies (SPS, ISR, S$p \bar p$S, RHIC, Tevatron, LHC) including initial parton transverse momenta within the formalism of unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF). Different approaches from the literature are compared and discussed. A special emphasis is put on the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) distributions and their extension into the soft region. Sum rules for UPDFs are formulated and discussed in detail. We find a violation of naive number sum rules for the KMR UPDFs. An interesting interplay of perturbative (large $k_t^2$) and nonperturbative (small $k_t^2$) regions of UPDFs in the production of both soft and hard photons is identified. The $k_t$-factorization approach with the KMR UPDFs is inconsistent with the collinear approach at large transverse momenta of photons. Kwieciński UPDFs provide very good description of all world data, especially at SPS and ISR energies. Off-shell effects are discussed and quantified. Predictions for the CERN LHC are given. Very forward/backward regions in rapidity at LHC energy are discussed and a possibility to test unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF) is presented.

Scalar Higgs boson production in a fusion of two off-shell gluons

The amplitude for scalar Higgs boson production in a fusion of two off-shell gluons is calculated including finite (not infinite) masses of quarks in the triangle loop. In comparison to the effective Lagrangian approach, we have found a new term in the amplitude. The matrix element found can be used in the kt-factorization approach to the Higgs boson production. The results are compared with the calculations for on-shell gluons. Small deviations from the cos(phi)^2-dependence are predicted. The off-shell effects found are practically negligible.

Gluon transverse momenta and charm quark-antiquark pair production in $p-\bar p$ collisions at Tevatron

We discuss and compare different approaches to include gluon transverse momenta for heavy quark-antiquark pair production. The correlations in azimuthal angle and in heavy quark, heavy antiquark transverse momenta are studied in detail. The results are illustrated with the help of different unintegrated gluon distribution functons (UGDF) from the literature. We compare results obtained with on-shell and off-shell matrix elements and kinematics and quantify where these effects are negligible and where they are essential. We concentrate on the region of asymmetric transverse momenta of charm quark and charm antiquark. Most of UGDFs lead in this corner of the phase space to almost full decorellation in azimuthal angle. We propose correlation observables to be best suited in order to test the existing models of UGDFs.

Unintegrated CCFM parton distributions and pion production in proton-proton collisions at high energies

Inclusive cross sections for pion production in proton-proton collisions are calculated for the first time based on unintegrated parton (gluon, quark, antiquark) distributions (uPDF). We use Kwieciński uPDF's and phenomenological fragmentation functions from the literature. In addition to the $gg \to g$ diagram used recently for applications at RHIC we include also $g q \to q$ and $q g \to q$ diagrams. We find that the new contributions are comparable to the purely gluonic one at midrapidities and dominate in the fragmentation region. The new mechanisms are responsible for $π^+ - π^-$ asymmetry. We discuss how the asymmetry depends on $x_F$ and $p_t$. Inclusive distributions in $x_F$ (or rapidity) and transverse momentum for partons and pions are shown for illustration. In contrast to standard collinear approach in our approach the range of applicability can be extended towards much lower transverse momenta.

Charm quark-antiquark correlations in photon-proton scattering

Correlation of charm quark - charm antiquark in $γp$ scattering are calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach. We apply different unintegrated gluon distributions (uGDF) used in the literature. The results of our calculations are compared with very recent experimental results from the FOCUS collaboration. The CCFM uGDF developed recently by Kwieciński et al. gives a good description of the data. New observables are suggested for future studies. Predictions and perspectives for the HERA energies are presented.

Unintegrated CCFM parton distributions and transverse momentum of gauge bosons

Transverse momentum distribution of gauge bosons $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ is calculated using unintegrated parton distributions obtained by solving leading order CCFM equation(s) in the impact parameter space. For illustration we compare the results of the fixed-order collinear, soft-gluon resummation and CCFM approaches. A parameter of a nonperturbative form factor is adjusted to the D0 data. In contrast to the collinear approach, the leading order calculation based on the unintegrated CCFM parton distributions generates transverse momentum distributions of gauge bosons, which are almost consistent with experimental data provided the parameter of the nonperturbative form factor is appropriately adjusted. The $W^+$-$W^-$ asymmetry is calculated as a function of the boson rapidity and transverse momentum. Predictions are given for RHIC and LHC.

Remarks on heavy-quark production in photon-nucleon and photon-photon collisions

I discuss mechanisms of heavy quark production in (real) photon-nucleon and (real) photon - (real) photon collisions. In particular, I focuse on application of the Saturation Model. In addition to the main dipole-nucleon or dipole-dipole contribution included in recent analyses, I propose how to calculate within the same formalism the hadronic single-resolved contribution to heavy quark production. At high photon-photon energies this yields a sizeable correction of about 30-40 % for inclusive charm production and 15-20 % for bottom production. Adding all possible contributions to $e^+ e^- \to b \bar b X$ together removes a huge deficit observed in earlier works but does not solve the problem totally.

A two-component model for $γ^*$-p scattering at small Bjorken x

We extend the Golec-Biernat-Wüsthoff model for virtual photon - proton scattering to include the resolved photon component explicitly. The parameters of the resolved photon component are taken from the literature, while the parameters of the dipole-nucleon interaction are fitted to the HERA data in a selected limited range of $x$ and $Q^2$. A good agreement with experimental data is obtained far beyond the region of the fit.

Perturbative QCD versus pion exchange and hadronic FSI effects in the gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^- reaction

The interplay of pQCD, pion exchange and FSI effects is studied for the gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^- reaction in the region of 2 GeV < W_{gamma gamma} < 6 GeV. We find strong interference effects between pQCD and soft pion-exchange amplitudes up to W_{gamma gamma} ~ 4 GeV. We discuss to which extend the conventional hadronic FSI effects could cloud the pQCD effects. We study multipole soft and hard scattering effects as well as the coupling between final state hadronic channels. We show how the perturbative effects in gamma gamma --> rho rho may mix with perturbative effects in gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^-. The effects discussed in this paper improve the agreement with the new data of the DELPHI and ALEPH collaborations. We give estimates of the onset of the pQCD regime. Predictions for gamma gamma --> pi^0 pi^0 are presented.
