Effect of Mn Substitution on Superconductivity in PrFeAs(O,F): Role of Magnetic Impurities

We investigate Mn substitution at the Fe site in PrFe1-xMnxAsO0.7F0.3 (0 to 0.1) using structural, Raman, density functional theory (DFT), transport, and magnetic measurements. X-ray diffraction and Raman analyses confirm preferential Mn incorporation into the FeAs planes, accompanied by lattice expansion and suppression of Fe-related vibrational modes. Electrical transport reveals a systematic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature from 48 K (x = 0) to complete suppression at x = 0.1, together with low-temperature resistivity upturns evolving toward insulating-like behavior. Magnetization and magnetotransport measurements show degradation of superconducting coherence, critical current density, upper critical field, and vortex activation energy with increasing Mn content. The results demonstrate that Mn acts as an efficient magnetic impurity, strongly perturbing the electronic and magnetic environment of the FeAs layers. Comparative analysis indicates relatively enhanced robustness of superconductivity in the Pr-based system, highlighting the role of rare-earth-dependent electronic correlations in impurity effects.

Complete electronic phase diagram and enhanced superconductivity in fluorine-doped PrFeAsO1-xFx

Establishing a complete electronic phase diagram for REFeAsO (RE = rare earth, RE1111) ironbased superconductors has remained experimentally challenging. Here, we report a systematic investigation of PrFeAsO1-xFx over the full nominal fluorine-doping range 0 to 1 and construct the first comprehensive electronic phase diagram for this system. The evolution from the nonsuperconducting parent compound to the fluorine-rich limit reveals a broad dome shaped superconducting region. Structural refinement demonstrates a systematic lattice contraction with increasing fluorine content (x), corroborated by Raman spectroscopy through softening of the Pr(A1g) phonon mode and hardening of the Fe(B1g) mode, confirming effective fluorine incorporation at the oxygen sites. The maximum superconducting transition temperature (Tc) reaches up to 52.3 K, approximately 5 K higher than previous reports for Pr1111. Magnetotransport measurements yield large upper critical fields Hc2(0) exceeding 100 T, while analysis of resistive transition broadening reveals thermally activated flux flow with a crossover from single-vortex to collective pinning regimes. Specific-heat measurements exhibit a reduced jump deltaC/{\gamma}Tc < 1.43, reflecting strong superconducting fluctuations and multiband pairing. These results establish clear structure property correlations and provide a unified description of superconductivity across the entire doping range of the Pr1111 system.

Specific heat studies of the phase transitions in multiferroic Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Mn$_{1-y}$Ti$_y$O$_3$ system ($0 \le x \le 0.65, 0 \le y \le 0.1$)

Specific heat studies of the Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Mn$_{1-y}$Ti$_y$O$_3$ polycrystalline samples performed by the relaxation and DSC methods over the temperature range 2 - 450 K are reported. Anomalies accompanying the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic and ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions were measured and analyzed. The system studied is a promising multiferroic material of the 2$^{\text {nd}}$ type, in which a strong coupling between the magnetic and electric systems can be related to the fact that the same Mn$^{4+}$ ions are responsible for the two orderings. Analysis of the anomaly at the magnetic transition was done by using the advanced theory of the continuous transitions, in which the presence of higher order terms in the free energy is considered, and the parameters of the critical behavior of the system were estimated. It was found that, despite of earlier predictions, the transition loses the continuous character and can become the 1$^{\text {st}}$ order process for the Ti-containing samples. The anomalies accompanying the 1$^{\text{st}}$ order high-temperature ferroelectric transition were found to be hardly visible by using both techniques, which was ascribed to a wide temperature range of coexistence of the dielectric and ferroelectric phases.

Temperature and Pressure Dependent Luminescence Mechanism of Zinc-Blende Structured ZnS:Mn Nanophosphor under UV and X-ray Excitations

A comprehensive photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence analysis of ZnS:Mn2+ nano-phosphor with zinc blende structure is presented. The sample containing quantum dot-sized nanocrystallites were synthesized by the chemical precipitation method and shows excellent orange luminescence at ambient conditions related to the 4T1->6A1 transition. The sample shows stable and identical luminescence behavior under both UV and X-ray excitation at ambient conditions and also shows excellent self-powered mechanoluminescence properties. The pressure and temperature-induced luminescence mechanism of the phosphor is also established. The shift of the 4T1->6A1 luminescence band of Mn2+ with both pressure and temperature and the luminescence mechanism is explained via the d5 Tanabe Sugano diagram. The broad luminescence band of 4T1->6A1 transition shifts from visible to near-infrared range at a rate of -35.8 meV/GPa with the increase of pressure and it is subsequently quenched completely at a pressure of 16.41 GPa due to a reversible phase transition from zinc blende to rocksalt phase. The high-pressure and temperature-dependent decay kinetics measurements of the sample luminescence are also reported.

Vortex glass transition and thermal creep in niobium films

The evolution of the vortex glass (VG) phase transition and vortex creep with decreasing film thickness is studied in ultrathin, polycrystalline niobium films, with thickness in the range 7.4 nm to 44 nm, using current-voltage characteristics measurements in perpendicular magnetic field. Standard methods, including scaling laws, allow to identify VG transition in the thickest film, while in thinner films creep produces large uncertainty in the putative VG transition temperature and scaling exponents. Using strong pinning theory we perform analysis of the creep, and extract the dependence of the activation energy for vortex pinning on temperature, magnetic field, and film thickness. This analysis provides more information on vortex dynamics than the standard evaluation of critical current density. The results reveal two distinct regimes of pinning, which we propose to identify with $δl$ or $δT_c$-types of pinning (due to spacial fluctuation of mean free path $l$ or spacial fluctuation of superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, respectively). In the thickest film $δl$ pinning is observed, but with the decrease of film thickness the second pinning regime appears, and becomes dominant in the thinnest film. We link these pinning regimes with the structural disorder due to grain boundaries, which produce charge carrier scattering in the thickest film, but with decreasing film thickness gradually evolve into amorphous inclusions, producing fluctuations in the $T_c$.

Quantum versus classical nature of a low-temperature magnetic phase transition in TbAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$

Specific heat, $C_B$, of a TbAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ crystal was studied for 50 mK $<T<$ 300 K, with emphasis on $T<1$ K, where a phase transition was found at $T_c =0.68$ K. Nuclear, non-phonon ($C_m$), and lattice contributions to $C_B$ were separated. Lowering of $T_c$ with ncrease of magnetic field parallel to the easy magnetization axis, $B_{||}$, was found. It was established that $C_m$ and a Grüneisen ratio depend on $B_{||}$ and $T$ in a way characteristic of systems, in which a classical transition is driven by quantum fluctuations, QF, to a quantum critical point at $T=0$, by tuning a control parameter ($B_{||}$). The $B_{||} - T$ phase diagram was constructed and the dynamical critical exponent $0.82 \le z \le 0.96$ was assessed. Nature of the transition was not established explicitly. Magnetization studies point at the ferromagnetic ordering of Tb$^{3+}$ magnetic moments, however, lowering of $T_c$ with increase in $B_{||}$ is opposite to the classical behavior. Hence, a dominant role of QF was supposed.

Low-Temperature Magnetic Susceptibility of Erbium Aluminum Borate Single Crystal: Van Vleck Paramagnetism and Spin Correlations

Temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility in a trigonal single crystal of erbium aluminum borate were measured in the temperature range of 2 - 15 K at the external field of 100 Oe applied along the second- and third-order crystallographic axes. Analysis of the experimental data allows to identify the Van Vleck contribution to the susceptibility. The influence of spin correlations on the magnetic susceptibility has been identified. It has been estimate the negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature.

Features of magnetic and magnetoelectric properties, H-T phase diagram of GdCr3(BO3)4

Comprehensive studies of magnetic properties of GdCr3(BO3)4 single crystal have been carried out. The integrals of intrachain and interchain exchange interactions in the chromium subsystem have been determined and the strength of Cr-Gd exchange interaction has been estimated. The values of the exchange field and the effective magnetic anisotropy field of GdCr3(BO3)4 have been estimated. The electric polarization along the a axis in the longitudinal geometry of the experiment has been detected. Correlations between the electric polarization and the magnetization of the studied compound have been found. The spin-reorientation phase transition in the magnetically ordered state has been found. This transition exists for the external magnetic field applied along any crystallographic direction and the transition field depends weakly on the direction of the field. The nature of the spin-reorientation phase transition has been discussed. Magnetic phase diagram has been constructed and spin configurations for the low-field and high-field phases have been proposed.

Two-valence band electron and heat transport in monocrystalline PbTe-CdTe solid solutions with high Cd content

High quality p-type PbTe-CdTe monocrystalline alloys containing up to 10 at.$\%$ of Cd are obtained by self-selecting vapor transport method. Mid infrared photoluminescence experiments are performed to follow the variation of the fundamental energy gap as a function of Cd content. The Hall mobility, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity and thermoelectric figure of merit parameter $ZT$ are investigated experimentally and theoretically paying particular attention to the two-valence band structure of the material. It is shown that the heavy-hole band near the $Σ$ point of the Brillouin zone plays an important role and is responsible for the Pb$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$Te hole transport at higher Cd-content. Our data and their description can serve as the standard for Pb$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$Te single crystals with $x$ up to 0.1. It is shown, that monocrystalline Pb$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$Te samples with relatively low Cd content of about 1 at.\% and hole concentration of the order of 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ may exhibit $ZT \approx$ 1.4 at 600 K.

Experimental evidence for topological surface states wrapping around bulk SnTe crystal

We demonstrate that the metallic topological surface states wrap on all sides the 3D topological crystalline insulator SnTe. This is achieved by studying oscillatory quantum magneto-transport and magnetization at tilted magnetic fields which enables us to observe simultaneous contributions from neighbouring sample sides. Taking into account pinning of the Fermi energy by the SnTe reservoir we successfully describe theoretically the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of magnetization. The determined π-Berry phase of surface states confirms their Dirac fermion character. We independently observe oscillatory contributions of magneto-transport and magnetization originating from the bulk SnTe reservoir of high hole density. It is concluded that the bulk and surface Landau states exist in parallel. Our main result that the bulk reservoir is surrounded on all sides by the topological surface states has an universal character.

Planet Hunters X. KIC 8462852 - Where's the Flux?

Over the duration of the Kepler mission, KIC8462852 was observed to undergo irregularly shaped, aperiodic dips in flux of up to $\sim 20$\%. The dipping activity can last for between 5 and 80 days. We characterize the object with high-resolution spectroscopy, spectral energy distribution fitting, radial velocity measurements, high-resolution imaging, and Fourier analyses of the Kepler light curve. We determine that KIC8462852 is a typical main-sequence F3 V star that exhibits no significant IR excess, and has no very close interacting companions. In this paper, we describe various scenarios to explain the dipping events observed in the Kepler light curve. We confirm that the dipping signals in the data are not caused by any instrumental or data processing artifact, and thus are astrophysical in origin. We construct scenario-independent constraints on the size and location of a body in the system that is needed to reproduce the observations. We deliberate over several assorted stellar and circumstellar astrophysical scenarios, most of which have problems explaining the data in hand. By considering the observational constraints on dust clumps in orbit around a normal main-sequence star, we conclude that the scenario most consistent with the data in hand is the passage of a family of exocomet or planetesimal fragments, all of which are associated with a single previous break-up event, possibly caused by tidal disruption or thermal processing. The minimum total mass associated with these fragments likely exceeds $10^{-6}$~\mearth, corresponding to an original rocky body of $>100$~km in diameter. We discuss the necessity of future observations to help interpret the system.

Phase transitions in single-crystalline magnetoelectric LiCoPO4

Specific heat, magnetic torque, and magnetization studies of LiCoPO4 olivine are presented. They show that an unique set of physical properties of LiCoPO4 leads to the appearance of features characteristic of 2D Ising systems near the Neel temperature, T_N =21.6 K, and to the appearance of an uncommon effect of influence of magnetic field on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The latter effect manifests itself as a first-order transition, discovered at ~9 K, induced by magnetic field of 8 T. Physical nature of this transition was explained and a model describing experimental dependences satisfactorily was proposed.

Strongly enhancend anisotropic upper critical field in carbon substituted MgB2: impact of Fermi surface changes

The upper critical field Hc2||c(0) of 85 kOe in Mg(B0.94C0.06)2 single crystals, determined from torque measurements, is more than twice as large as that one of 31 kOe in unsubstituted MgB2. Anisotropy of Hc2 increases from about 3.4 near Tc, the value close to that in MgB2, to about 4 at low temperature, the value considerably lower than that in MgB2. The corresponding Hc2||ab(0) of about 330-350 kOe is likely close to the maximum enhancement due to C substitution. The position of a sharp peak in the irreversible torque Hmax was found to be shifted to lower reduced fields H/Hc2 in comparison to its position in unsubstituted MgB2, indicating increasing disorder. The enhancement of Hc2 can be explained as a disorder effect only if the main result of disorder is to make the p bands more dirty while not affecting the s bands as much. In addition to disorder and weakened electron-phonon coupling, the impact of the Fermi level shifting into a region with lower s Fermi velocities has to be taken into account in the analysis of Hc2 data as well.
