Improved $S$-factor of the $^{13}$C(p,$γ$)$^{14}$N reaction at $E_{\mathrm{p}}\,=\,$330-740 keV and parameters of resonances at 448 keV and 551 keV

The $^{13}$C(p,$γ$)$^{14}$N reaction is the second reaction of the CNO cycle. This cycle takes place in our Sun and fuels massive, Red, and Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. The $^{13}$C(p,$γ$)$^{14}$N rate affects the final abundances of $^{12,13}$C and $^{19}$F nuclides, with impact on our understanding of the i- and s-process, giant star nucleosynthesis and mixing processes, and ultimately the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Here, we report on a new measurement of the $^{13}$C(p,$γ$)$^{14}$N cross-section, which has been performed at the Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory in Dresden (Germany). The present $S$-factor results agree at low energy with LUNA data but are about 20% lower than previous literature data over the whole energy range explored, $E\,=\,$310-680 keV. The narrow resonance corresponding to the 7966.9(5) keV excited state has been investigated and we report a new resonance strength, $ωγ\,=\,$18(2) meV. In addition a new R-matrix fit is presented, from which new parameters for the broad resonance corresponding to the 8062.0(10) keV excited state are derived and a new extrapolation for the total $S$-factor down to zero energy is obtained, $S_{\mathrm{tot}}$(0) = 6.4(4) keV b. Finally a new reaction rate is calculated and reported here.

Control of photodissociation with dynamic Stark effect induced by Thz pulses

We demonstrate how dynamic Stark control (DSC) can be achieved on molecular photodissociation in the dipole limit, using single-cycle (FWHM) laser pulses in the terahertz (THz) regime. As the laser-molecule interaction follows the instantaneous electric field through the permanent dipoles, the molecular potentials dynamically oscillate and so does the crossings between them. In this paper, we consider rotating-vibrating diatomic molecules (2D description) and reveal the interplay between the dissociating wave packet and the dynamically fluctuating crossing seam located in the configuration space of the molecules spanned by the R vibrational and $θ$ rotational coordinates. Our showcase example is the widely studied lithium-fluoride (LiF) molecule for which the two lowest $Σ$ states are nonadiabatically coupled at an avoided crossing (AC), furthermore a low-lying pure repulsive $Π$ state is energetically close. Optical pumping of the system in the ground state thus results in two dissociation channels: one indirect route via the AC in the ground $Σ$ state and one direct path in the $Π$ state. We show that applying THz control pulses with specific time delays relative to the pumping, can significantly alter the population dynamics, as well as, the kinetic energy and angular distribution of the photofragments.

Probability density functions for the variable solar wind near the solar cycle minimum

Unconditional and conditional statistics is used for studying the histograms of magnetic field multi-scale fluctuations in the solar wind near the solar cycle minimum in 2008. The unconditional statistics involves the magnetic data during the whole year 2008. The conditional statistics involves the magnetic field time series splitted into concatenated subsets of data according to a threshold in dynamic pressure. The threshold separates fast stream leading edge compressional and trailing edge uncompressional fluctuations. The histograms obtained from these data sets are associated with both large-scale (B) and small-scale (δB) magnetic fluctuations, the latter corresponding to time-delayed differences. It is shown here that, by keeping flexibility but avoiding the unnecessary redundancy in modeling, the histograms can be effectively described by a limited set of theoretical probability distribution functions (PDFs), such as the normal, log-normal, kappa and logkappa functions. In a statistical sense the model PDFs correspond to additive and multiplicative processes exhibiting correlations. It is demonstrated here that the skewed small-scale histograms inherent in turbulent cascades are better described by the skewed log-kappa than by the symmetric kappa model. Nevertheless, the observed skewness is rather small, resulting in potential difficulties of estimation of the third-order moments. This paper also investigates the dependence of the statistical convergence of PDF model parameters, goodness of fit and skewness on the data sample size. It is shown that the minimum lengths of data intervals required for the robust estimation of parameters is scale, process and model dependent.

Ionization of atoms by few-cycle EUV laser pulses: carrier-envelope phase dependence of the intra-pulse interference effects

We have investigated the ionization of the H atom by intense few-cycle laser pulses, in particular the intra-pulse interference effects, and their dependence on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse. In the final momentum distribution of the continuum electrons the imprint of two types of intra-pulse interference effects can be observed, namely the temporal and spatial interference. During the spatial interference electronic wave packets emitted at the same time, but following different paths interfere leading to an interference pattern measurable in the electron spectra. This can be also interpreted as the interference between a direct and a scattered wave, and the spatial interference pattern as the holographic mapping (HM) of the target. This HM pattern is strongly influenced by the carrier-envelope phase through the shape of the laser pulse. Here, we have studied how the shape of the HM pattern is modified by the CEP, and we have found an optimal CEP for the observation of HM.
