Magnetic excitations of Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x} in magnetic and superconductive phases

We have used inelastic neutron scattering and muon-spin rotation to compare the low energy magnetic excitations in single crystals of superconducting Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50 and non-superconducting Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75. We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excitation is also observed in Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75 close to the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector (1/2-δ,0,1/2) where δ\approx 0.03. The magnetic correlations in both samples are found to be quasi-two dimensional in character and persist well above the magnetic (Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75) and superconducting (Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50) transition temperatures.

Nature of the magnetic order and origin of induced ferroelectricity in TbMnO$_3$

The magnetic structures which endow TbMnO$_3$ with its multiferroic properties have been reassessed on the basis of a comprehensive soft x-ray resonant scattering (XRS) study. The selectivity of XRS facilitated separation of the various contributions (Mn $L_2$ edge, Mn 3d moments; Tb M$_4$ edge, Tb 4f moments), while its variation with azimuth provided information on the moment direction of distinct Fourier components. When the data are combined with a detailed group theory analysis, a new picture emerges of the ferroelectric transition at 28 K. Instead of being driven by the transition from a collinear to a non-collinear magnetic structure, as has previously been supposed, it is shown to occur between two non-collinear structures.

Inward dispersion of the spin excitation spectrum of stripe-ordered La2NiO4+d

Polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering measurements of the spin excitation spectrum in the stripe-ordered phase of La2NiO4+d (d = 0.11) are presented. At low energies, the magnetic spectral weight is found to shift anomalously towards the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic wave vector, similar to the low-energy dispersions observed in cuprate superconductors. While spin-wave spectra in stripe phases can exhibit an apparent inward dispersion, we find that the peak shifts measured here cannot be accounted for by this effect. Possible extensions of the model are discussed.

Magnetic order and dynamics of the charge-ordered antiferromagnet La1.5Sr0.5CoO4

We describe neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the magnetic order and dynamics of half-doped La1.5Sr0.5CoO4. This layered perovskite exhibits a near-ideal checkerboard pattern of Co2+/Co3+ charge order at temperatures below ~ 800 K. Magnetic correlations are observed at temperatures below ~ 60 K but static magnetic order only becomes established at 31 K, a temperature at which a kink is observed in the susceptibility. On warming above 31 K we observed a change in the magnetic correlations which we attribute either to a spin canting or to a change in the proportion of inequivalent magnetic domains. The magnetic excitation spectrum is dominated by an intense band extending above a gap of approximately 3 meV up to a maximum energy of 16 meV. A weaker band exists in the energy range 20-30 meV. We show that the excitation spectrum is in excellent quantitative agreement with the predictions of a spin-wave theory generalized to include the full magnetic degrees of freedom of high-spin Co2+ ions in an axially distorted crystal field, coupled by Heisenberg exchange interactions. The magnetic order is found to be stabilized by dominant antiferromagnetic Co2+ -- Co2+ interactions acting in a straight line through Co3+. No evidence is found for magnetic scattering from the Co3+ ions, supporting the view that Co3+ is in the S = 0 state in this material.

Coexistence of incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity in Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x}

We report an investigation into the superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe_{1+y}Se_{x}Te_{1-x} single crystals by magnetic susceptibility, muon spin rotation, and neutron diffraction. We find three regimes of behavior in the phase diagram for 0\leq x\leq 0.5: (i) commensurate magnetic order for x< 0.1, (ii) bulk superconductivity for $x\lesssim 0.1$, and (iii) a range \sim 0.25\leq x\leq 0.45 in which superconductivity coexists with static incommensurate magnetic order. The results are qualitatively consistent with a two-band mean-field model in which itinerant magnetism and extended s-wave superconductivity are competing order parameters.

The Temperature Evolution of the Out-of-Plane Correlation Lengths of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4)

The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling, the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l = even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result of competition between magnetic and charge order.

Crystal-to-stripe reordering of sodium ions in NaxCoO2 (x>=0.75)

The sodium reordering in NaxCoO2 in the vicinity of room temperature is rationalized at high x in terms of phase transitions between square and striped phases. A striking hexagon-of-hexagons diffraction pattern observed for x=0.78 can be reproduced using coexisting square and striped phases that are related by simple shear deformations. All compositions exhibit a partial melting transition to a disordered stripe phase just below room temperature, which alters the topology of the electrical conduction pathways.

Experimental Proof of a Magnetic Coulomb Phase

Spin ice materials are magnetic substances in which the spin directions map onto hydrogen positions in water ice. Recently this analogy has been elevated to an electromagnetic equivalence, indicating that the spin ice state is a Coulomb phase, with magnetic monopole excitations analogous to ice's mobile ionic defects. No Coulomb phase has yet been proved in a real magnetic material, as the key experimental signature is difficult to resolve in most systems. Here we measure the scattering of polarised neutrons from the prototypical spin ice Ho2Ti2O7. This enables us to separate different contributions to the magnetic correlations to clearly demonstrate the existence of an almost perfect Coulomb phase in this material. The temperature dependence of the scattering is consistent with the existence of deconfined magnetic monopoles connected by Dirac strings of divergent length.

Circularly polarised X-rays as a probe of non-collinear magnetic order in multiferroic TbMnO3

Non-resonant X-ray magnetic scattering has been used to study the magnetic structure of multiferroic TbMnO3 in its ferroelectric phase. Circularly polarized X-rays were combined with a full polarization analysis of the scattered beam to reveal important new information on the magnetic structure of this canonical multiferroic. An applied electric field is shown to create a magnetic nearly mono-domain state in which the cylcoidal order on the Mn sublattice rotates either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on the sign of the field. It is demonstrated how this technique provides sensitivity to the absolute sense of rotation of the Mn moments, and to components of the ordering on the Tb sublattice and phase shifts that earlier neutron diffraction experiments could not resolve.

A high resolution, hard x-ray photoemission investigation of La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (0.30<x<0.50): on microscopic phase separation and the surface electronic structure of a bilayered CMR manganite

Photoemission data taken with hard x-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the bilayered, colossal magnetoresistant manganite La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (LSMO) with 0.30<x<0.50 are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard x-ray excitation it is shown that the core level footprint of the electronic structure of the LSMO cleavage surface is identical to that of the bulk. Furthermore, by comparing the core level shift of the different elements as a function of doping level x, it is shown that microscopic phase separation is unlikely to occur for this particular manganite well above the Curie temperature.

High energy spin excitations in BaFe2As2

We report neutron scattering measurements of cooperative spin excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered BaFe2As2, the parent phase of an iron pnictide superconductor. The data extend up to ~100meV and show that the spin excitation spectrum is sharp and highly dispersive. By fitting the spectrum to a linear spin-wave model we estimate the magnon bandwidth to be in the region of 0.17eV. The large characteristic spin fluctuation energy suggests that magnetism could play a role in the formation of the superconducting state.

Ordering of localized electronic states in multiferroic TbMnO3: a soft X-ray resonant scattering study

Soft X-ray resonant scattering (XRS) has been used to observe directly, for the first time, the ordering of localized electronic states on both the Mn and Tb sites in multiferroic TbMnO$_3$. Large resonant enhancement of the X-ray scattering cross-section were observed when the incident photon energy was tuned to either the Mn $L$ or Tb $M$ edges which provide information on the Mn 3d and Tb $4f$ electronic states, respectively. The temperature dependence of the XRS signal establishes, in a model independent way, that in the high-temperature phase (28 K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 42 K) the Mn 3d sublattices displays long-range order. The Tb $4f$ sublattices are found to order only on entering the combined ferroelectric/magnetic state below 28 K. Our results are discussed with respect to recent hard XRS experiments (sensitive to spatially extended orbitals) and neutron scattering.

An x-ray resonant diffraction study of multiferroic DyMn2O5

X-ray resonant scattering has been used to measure the magnetic order of the Dy ions below 40K in multiferroic DyMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. The magnetic order has a complex behaviour. There are several different ordering wavevectors, both incommensurate and commensurate, as the temperature is varied. In addition a non-magnetic signal at twice the wavevector of one of the commensurate signals is observed, the maximum intensity of which occurs at the same temperature as a local maximum in the ferroelectric polarisation. Some of the results, which bear resemblence to the behaviour of other members of the RMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ family of multiferroic materials, may be explained by a theory based on so-called acentric spin-density waves.

X-ray Resonant Scattering Study of the Order Parameters in Multiferroic TbMnO$_3$

We report on an extensive investigation of the multiferroic compound TbMnO$_3$. Non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (NRXMS) revealed a dominant $A$-type domain. The temperature dependence of the intensity and wavevector associated with the incommensurate magnetic order was found to be in good agreement with neutron scattering data. XRS experiments were performed in the vicinity of the Mn $K$ and Tb $L_3$ edges in the high-temperature collinear phase, the intermediate temperature cycloidal/ferroelectric phase, and the low-temperature phase. In the collinear phase resonant $E1-E1$ satellites were found at the Mn $K$ edge associated with $A$-type but also $F$-type peaks. The azimuthal dependence of the $F$-type satellites (and their absence in the NRXMS experiments) indicates that they are most likely non-magnetic in origin. We suggest instead that they may be associated with an induced charge multipole. At the Tb $L_3$ edge resonant $A$- and $F$-type satellites ($E1-E1$) were observed in the collinear phase. These we attribute to a polarisation of the Tb 5$d$ states by the ordering of the Mn sublattice. In the cycloidal/ferroelectric phase a new set of resonant satellites appear corresponding to $C$-type order. These appear at the Tb $L_3$ edge only. In addition to a dominant $E1-E1$ component in the $σ-π^\prime$ channel, a weaker component is found in the pre-edge with $σ-σ^\prime$ polarization. Calculations of the XRS were performed using the $FDMNES$ code showing that the unrotated $σ-σ^\prime$ component of the Tb $L_3$ $C$-type peaks appearing in the ferroelectric phase contains a contribution from a multipole that is odd with respect to both space and time, known in various contexts as the anapole.

Influence of static Jahn-Teller distortion on the magnetic excitation spectrum of PrO2: A synchrotron x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering study

A synchrotron x-ray diffraction study of the crystallographic structure of PrO2 in the Jahn-Teller distorted phase is reported. The distortion of the oxygen sublattice, which was previously ambiguous, is shown to be a chiral structure in which neighbouring oxygen chains have opposite chiralities. A temperature dependent study of the magnetic excitation spectrum, probed by neutron inelastic scattering, is also reported. Changes in the energies and relative intensities of the crystal field transitions provide an insight into the interplay between the static and dynamic Jahn-Teller effects.

Investigation of the spin state of Co in LaCoO3 at room temperature

We investigate the spin state of LaCoO3 using state-of-the-art photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. The GGA+U calculations provide a good description of the ground state for the experimentally estimated value of electron correlation strength, U. In addition to the correlation effect, spin-orbit interaction is observed to play a significant role in the case of intermediate spin and high spin configurations. The comparison of the calculated Co 3d and O 2p partial density of states with the experimental valence band spectra indicates that at room temperature, Co has dominant intermediate spin state configuration and that the high spin configuration may not be significant at this temperature. The lineshape of the La 5p and O 2s core level spectra could be reproduced well within these ab initio calculations.

Nature of the Magnetic Order in the Charge-Ordered Cuprate La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$

Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structure. The measurements rule out a number of alternative models characterized by 2D electronic order or 1D helical spin order. The low-energy spin excitations are found to be primarily transversely polarized relative to the stripe ordered state, consistent with conventional spin waves.

Patterning of sodium ions and the control of electrons in sodium cobaltate

NaxCoO2 has emerged as a material of exceptional scientific interest due to the potential for thermoelectric applications, and because the strong interplay between the magnetic and superconducting properties has led to close comparisons with the physics of the high-Tc cuprates. The density, x, of the sodium in the intercalation layers can be altered electrochemically, directly changing the number of conduction electrons on triangular Co layers. Recent electron diffraction measurements reveal a kaleidoscope of Na+ ion patterns as a function of concentration. Here we use single-crystal neutron diffraction supported by numerical simulations to determine the long-range three-dimensional superstructures of these ions. We show that the sodium ordering and its associated distortion field are governed by pure electrostatics, and the organizational principle is the stabilization of charge droplets that order long range at some simple fractional fillings. Our results provide a good starting point to understand the electronic properties in terms of a Hubbard Hamiltonian taking into account the electrostatic potential from the Na superstructures. The resulting depth of potential wells in the Co layer is greater than the single-particle hopping kinetic energy. As a consequence, holes occupy preferentially the lowest potential regions and, therefore, the Na+ ion patterning plays a decisive role in the transport and magnetic properties.
