Direct observation of orbital ordering in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ using soft x-ray diffraction

We report the first direct resonant soft x-ray scattering observations of orbital ordering. We have studied the low temperature phase of La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, a compound that displays charge and orbital ordering. Previous claims of orbital ordering in such materials have relied on observations at the Manganese $K$ edge. These claims have been questioned in several theoretical studies. Instead we have employed resonant soft x-ray scattering at the manganese $L_{III}$ and $L_{II}$ edges which probes the orbital ordering directly. Energy scans at constant wavevector are compared to theoretical predictions and suggest that at all temperatures there are two separate contributions to the scattering, direct orbital ordering and strong cooperative Jahn - Teller distortions of the Mn$^{3+}$ ions.

Spin excitations in stripe-ordered La2-xSrxNiO4 (x=0.275 and 1/3)

We report neutron scattering measurements of the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the stripe-ordered phase of La2-xSrxNiO4 (x=0.275 and 1/3). The propagating spin excitations follow a similar dispersion relation for the two compositions, but the line widths are broader for x=0.275 than for x=1/3.

Magnetic Order and Dynamics in Stripe-Ordered La2-xSrxNiO4

We have studied magnetic correlations in several compositions of stripe-ordered La2-xSrxNiO4. In this paper we show how polarized-neutron scattering has helped uncover important features of the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics. In particular, polarization analysis has enabled us (1) to characterize a spin reorientation transition, (2) to identify anisotropy gaps in the spin excitation spectrum, and (3) to investigate an anomalous dip in the spin-wave intensity suggestive of coupling between collective spin and charge excitations.

Observation of 3D Heisenberg-like ferromagnetism in single crystal La_{0.875}Sr_{0.125}MnO_3

We report measurements and analysis of the magnetic critical phenomena in a single crystal of La${_{0.875}}$Sr${_{0.125}}$MnO${_3}$. The critical exponents associated with the ferromagnetic transition have been determined from ac susceptibility and dc magnetisation data. Techniques like the Kouvel$-$Fischer plots, modified Arrots Plots and the critical isotherm analysis were used for this purpose. The values of the the exponents $γ$, $β$ and $δ$ obtained are found to match very well with those predicted for the 3D Heisenberg model. Our results are consistent with recent numerical calculations and suggest that though the double exchange interaction is driven by the motion of conduction electrons, the effective magnetic interaction near the transition is renormalized to a short range one.

The magnetic state of Yb in Kondo-lattice YbNi2B2C

We report neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the dynamic magnetic properties of the Kondo-lattice compound YbNi2B2C. The spectrum of magnetic excitations is found to be broad, extending up to at least 150 meV, and contains inelastic peaks centred near 18 meV and 43 meV. At low energies we observe quasielastic scattering with a width Gamma = 2.1 meV. The results suggest a Yb3+ ground state with predominantly localized 4f electrons subject to (i) a crystalline electric field (CEF) potential, and (ii) a Kondo interaction, which at low temperatures is about an order of magnitude smaller than the CEF interaction. From an analysis of the dynamic magnetic response we conclude that the crystalline electric field acting on the Yb ions has a similar anisotropy to that in other RNi2B2C compounds, but is uniformly enhanced by almost a factor of 2. The static and dynamic magnetic properties of YbNi2B2C are found to be reconciled quite well by means of an approximation scheme to the Anderson impurity model, and this procedure also indicates that the effective Kondo interaction varies with temperature due to the crystal field splitting. We discuss the nature of the correlated-electron ground state of YbNi2B2C based on these and other experimental results, and suggest that this compound might be close to a quantum critical point on the non-magnetic side.

Spin dynamics in stripe-ordered La5/3Sr1/3NiO4

Polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure the spin excitations in the spin-charge-ordered stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3NiO4. At high energies, sharp magnetic modes are observed characteristic of a static stripe lattice. The energy spectrum is described well by a linear spin wave model with intra- and inter-stripe exchange interactions between neighbouring Ni spins given by J = 15 +/- 1.5 meV and J' = 7.5 +/- 1.5 meV respectively. A pronounced broadening of the magnetic fluctuations in a band between 10 meV and 25 meV is suggestive of coupling to collective motions of the stripe domain walls.

Coupled Magnetic Excitations in Single Crystal PrBa2Cu3O6.2

The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in PrBa2Cu3O6.2 is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the Cu spin-waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic system. This enables values for the principal exchange constants to be determined, which suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice. Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the inter-layer Cu-Cu exchange is significantly lower than in YBa2Cu3O6.2.

Comment on "Magnetoelastic model for the relaxation of lanthanide ions in YBa2Cu3O7-d observed by neutron scattering"

Lovesey and Staub have argued [S.W. Lovesey and U. Staub, Phys. Rev. B 61, 9130 (2000)] that experimental data on the temperature dependence of the paramagnetic relaxation of lanthanide ions doped into YBa2Cu3O6+x are in agreement with the predictions of a model that describes the relaxation as due to the scattering of phonons via a magnetoelastic interaction. By generalising their model I show that the level of agreement is strongly dependent on the number of intermediate lanthanide energy levels included in the calculation, and that inclusion of a more complete set of levels leads to very different results that do not necessarily support the phonon damping picture.

Localized 4f States and Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect in PrO2

Neutron spectroscopic measurements of the magnetic excitations in PrO$_2$ reveal (1) sharp peaks characteristic of transitions between levels of the $4f^1$ configuration of Pr$^{4+}$ split by the cubic crystal field, and (2) broad bands of scattering centred near 30 meV and 160 meV. We present a simple model based on a vibronic Hamiltonian that accounts for the main features of the data. The analysis shows that $90\pm10$% of the Pr ions have a localized $4f^1$ configuration and provides strong evidence for a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the $Γ_8$ electronic ground state.
