Indirect exchange coupling between magnetic adatoms in carbon nanotubes

The long range character of the exchange coupling between localized magnetic moments indirectly mediated by the conduction electrons of metallic hosts can play a significant role in determining the magnetic order of low-dimensional structures. Here we consider how this indirect coupling influences the magnetic alignment of adatoms attached to the walls of carbon nanotubes. A general expression for the indirect coupling in terms of single-particle Green functions is presented. Contrary to the general property that magnetic moments embedded in a metal display Friedel-like oscillations in their magnetic response, calculated values for the coupling across metallic zigzag nanotubes show monotonic behaviour as a function of the adatom separation. Rather than an intrinsic property, the monotonicity is shown to reflect a commensurability effect in which the coupling oscillates with periods that coincide with the lattice parameter of the nanotube host. Such a commensurability effect does not dominate the coupling across semiconducting zigzag or metallic armchair nanotubes. We argue that such a long-range character in the magnetic interaction can be used in future spintronic devices.

Analytical Results of the One-Dimensional Hubbard Model in the High Temperature Limit

We investigate the grand potential of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in the high temperature limit, calculating the coefficients of the high temperature expansion ($β$-expansion) of this function up to order $β^4$ by an alternative method. The results derived are analytical and do not involve any perturbation expansion in the hopping constant, being valid for arbitrary density of electrons in the one-dimensional model. In the half-filled case, we compare our analytical results for the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility, in the high-temperature limit, with the ones obtained by Beni {\it et al.} and Takahashi's integral equations, showing that the latter result does not take into account the complete energy spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. The exact integral solution by Jüttner {\it et al}. is applied to the determination of the range of validity of our expansion in $β$ in the half-filled case, for several different values of $U$.

Spin waves in ultrathin ferromagnetic overlayers

The influence of a non-magnetic metallic substrate on the spin wave excitations in ultrathin ferromagnetic overlayers is investigated for different crystalline orientations. We show that spin wave dumping in these systems occur due to the tunneling of holes from the substrate into the overlayer, and that the spin wave energies may be considerably affected by the exchange coupling mediated by the substrate.

Exchange Coupling Between Iron Layers Separated by BCC Copper

The exchange coupling between Fe layers separated by BCC Cu is calculated for Fe/Cu/Fe (001) trilayers. It is shown that the coupling is basically regulated by three extrema of the bulk BCC Cu Fermi surface. The contributions from those extrema are all of the same order of magnitude, but that associated with the ``belly'' at the $Γ$-point dominates. The calculated temperature dependence of the coupling varies considerably with spacer layer thickness. Individually, the amplitudes of these extrema contribution decrease with temperature, each according to a different rate. Such an effect may cause an actual increase of coupling with temperature for some Cu thicknesses.

Dynamics of the Two-Site Hubbard Model

The dynamical evolution of a two-site Hubbard model is derived in the presence of an uniform external magnetic field for a general initial state. The time evolution of the half-filled (two-particle) case has a complex behaviour. Under certain initial conditions, the average number of fermions in one-particle state, in the half-filled case, is not necessarily periodic, even though the magnetization remains periodic. The results obtained may be applied to study the magnetization and the transition dipole moment of the organic charge-transfer salts in the in-phase mode.

Preprocessing in Attractor Neural Networks

Preprocessing the input patterns seems the simplest approach to invariant pattern recognition by neural networks. The Fourier transform has been proposed as an appropriate and elegant preprocessor. Nevertheless, we show in this work that the performance of this kind of preprocessor is strongly affected by the number of stored informations. This is because the phase of the Fourier transform plays a more important role than the amplitude in the recognition process.
