Shell Corrections for Finite-Depth Deformed Potentials: Green's Function Oscillator Expansion Method

Shell corrections of the finite deformed Woods-Saxon potential are calculated using the Green's function method and the generalized Strutinsky smoothing procedure. They are compared with the results of the standard prescription which are affected by the spurious contribution from the unphysical particle gas. In the new method, the shell correction approaches the exact limit provided that the dimension of the single-particle (harmonic oscillator) basis is sufficiently large. For spherical potentials, the present method is faster than the exact one in which the contribution from the particle continuum states is explicitly calculated. For deformed potentials, the Green's function method offers a practical and reliable way of calculating shell corrections for weakly bound nuclei.

Local realizations of contact interactions in two- and three-body problems

Mathematically rigorous theory of the two-body contact interaction in three dimension is reviewed. Local potential realizations of this proper contact interaction are given in terms of Poschl-Teller, exponential and square-well potentials. Three body calculation is carried out for the halo nucleus 11Li using adequately represented contact interaction.

Fine Structure in the Decay of Deformed Proton Emitters: Non-adiabatic Approach

The coupled-channel Schrodinger equation with outgoing wave boundary conditions is employed to study the fine structure seen in the proton decay of deformed even-N, odd-Z rare earth nuclei 131-Eu and 141-Ho. Experimental lifetimes and proton-decay branching ratios are reproduced. The comparison with the standard adiabatic theory is made.

Shell Corrections of Superheavy Nuclei in Self-Consistent Calculations

Shell corrections to the nuclear binding energy as a measure of shell effects in superheavy nuclei are studied within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock and Relativistic Mean-Field theories. Due to the presence of low-lying proton continuum resulting in a free particle gas, special attention is paid to the treatment of single-particle level density. To cure the pathological behavior of shell correction around the particle threshold, the method based on the Green's function approach has been adopted. It is demonstrated that for the vast majority of Skyrme interactions commonly employed in nuclear structure calculations, the strongest shell stabilization appears for Z=124, and 126, and for N=184. On the other hand, in the relativistic approaches the strongest spherical shell effect appears systematically for Z=120 and N=172. This difference has probably its roots in the spin-orbit potential. We have also shown that, in contrast to shell corrections which are fairly independent on the force, macroscopic energies extracted from self-consistent calculations strongly depend on the actual force parametrisation used. That is, the A and Z dependence of mass surface when extrapolating to unknown superheavy nuclei is prone to significant theoretical uncertainties.

A program for coupled-channels calculations with all order couplings for heavy-ion fusion reactions

A FORTRAN77 program is presented that calculates fusion cross sections and mean angular momenta of the compound nucleus under the influence of couplings between the relative motion and several nuclear collective motions. The no-Coriolis approximation is employed to reduce the dimension of coupled-channels equations. The program takes into account the effects of non-linear couplings to all orders, which have been shown to play an important role in heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies.

Shell corrections for finite depth potentials: Particle continuum effects

Shell corrections of finite, spherical, one-body potentials are analyzed using a smoothing procedure which properly accounts for the contribution from the particle continuum, i.e., unbound states. Since the plateau condition for the smoothed single-particle energy seldom holds, a new recipe is suggested for the definition of the shell correction. The generalized Strutinsky smoothing procedure is compared with the results of the semi-classical Wigner-Kirkwood expansion. A good agreement has been found for weakly bound nuclei in the vicinity of the proton drip line. However, some deviations remain for extremely neutron-rich systems due to the pathological behavior of the semi-classical level density around the particle threshold.

Particle-unstable nuclei in the Hartree-Fock theory

Ground state energies and decay widths of particle unstable nuclei are calculated within the Hartree-Fock approximation by performing a complex scaling of the many-body Hamiltonian. Through this transformation, the wave functions of the resonant states become square integrable. The method is implemented with Skyrme effective interactions. Several Skyrme parametrizations are tested on four unstable nuclei: 10He, 12O, 26O and 28O.

On the $α-$decay of deformed actinide nuclei

$α-$decay through a deformed potential barrier produces significant mixing of angular momenta when mapped from the nuclear interior to the outside. Using experimental branching ratios and either semi-classical or coupled-channels transmission matrices, we have found that there is a set of internal amplitudes which are essentially constant for all even--even actinide nuclei. These same amplitudes also give good results for the known anisotropic $α-$particle emission of the favored decays of odd nuclei in the same mass region. PACS numbers: 23.60.+e, 24.10.Eq, 27.90.+b
