Observation of Conduction Band Satellite of Ni Metal by 3p-3d Resonant Inverse Photoemission Study

Resonant inverse photoemission spectra of Ni metal have been obtained across the Ni 3$p$ absorption edge. The intensity of Ni 3$d$ band just above Fermi edge shows asymmetric Fano-like resonance. Satellite structures are found at about 2.5 and 4.2 eV above Fermi edge, which show resonant enhancement at the absorption edge. The satellite structures are due to a many-body configuration interaction and confirms the existence of 3$d^8$ configuration in the ground state of Ni metal.

Electronic structures of Cr$_{1-δ}$X (X=S, Te) studied by Cr 2p soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Cr 2p core excited XAS and XMCD spectra of ferromagnetic Cr$_{1-δ}$Te with several concentrations of $δ$=0.11-0.33 and ferrimagnetic Cr$_{5}$S$_{6}$ have been measured. The observed XMCD lineshapes are found to very weakly depend on $δ$ for Cr$_{1-δ}$Te. The experimental results are analyzed by means of a configuration-interaction cluster model calculation with consideration of hybridization and electron correlation effects. The obtained values of the spin magnetic moment by the cluster model analyses are in agreement with the results of the band structure calculation. The calculated result shows that the doped holes created by the Cr deficiency exist mainly in the Te 5porbital of Cr$_{1-δ}$Te, whereas the holes are likely to be in Cr 3d state for Cr$_{5}$S$_{6}$.

Nature of Orbital Ordering in La_0.5Sr_1.5MnO_4 is Studied by Soft X-ray Linear Dichroism

We found that the conventional model of orbital ordering of 3x^2-r^2/3y^2-r^2 type in the eg states of La_0.5Sr_1.5MnO_4 is incompatible with measurements of linear dichroism in the Mn 2p-edge x-ray absorption, whereas these eg states exhibit predominantly cross-type orbital ordering of x^2-z^2/y^2-z^2. LDA+U band-structure calculations reveal that such a cross-type orbital ordering results from a combined effect of antiferromagnetic structure, Jahn-Teller distortion, and on-site Coulomb interactions.

Magnetic versus crystal field linear dichroism in NiO thin films

We have detected strong dichroism in the Ni $L_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectra of monolayer NiO films. The dichroic signal appears to be very similar to the magnetic linear dichroism observed for thicker antiferromagnetic NiO films. A detailed experimental and theoretical analysis reveals, however, that the dichroism is caused by crystal field effects in the monolayer films, which is a non trivial effect because the high spin Ni $3d^{8}$ ground state is not split by low symmetry crystal fields. We present a practical experimental method for identifying the independent magnetic and crystal field contributions to the linear dichroic signal in spectra of NiO films with arbitrary thicknesses and lattice strains. Our findings are also directly relevant for high spin $3d^{5}$ and $3d^{3}$ systems such as LaFeO$_{3}$, Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$, VO, LaCrO$_{3}$, Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$, and Mn$^{4+}$ manganate thin films.

A different look at the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions in CoO$_{5}$ pyramidal coordination

Using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ and O-$K$ edges, we demonstrate that the Co$^{3+}$ ions with the CoO$_{5}$ pyramidal coordination in the layered Sr$_2$CoO$_3$Cl compound are unambiguously in the high spin state. Our result questions the reliability of the spin state assignments made so far for the recently synthesized layered cobalt perovskites, and calls for a re-examination of the modeling for the complex and fascinating properties of these new materials.

Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of the ferromagnetic Cr$_{1-δ}$Te

The 2p core excited XAS and XMCD spectra of Cr$_{1-δ}$Te with several concentrations of $δ$=0.11-0.33 have been measured. The observed XMCD lineshapes are found to very weakly depend on $δ$. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of the configuration-interaction picture with consideration of hybridization and electron correlation effects. The calculated result shows that CrTe can be classified into a charge transfer type material and created holes preferably exist in Te 5p orbitals in Cr deficient materials Cr$_{1-δ}$Te, which are in consistence with the observed XMCD feature and the reported band structure calculation.

Collective Dynamics of Josephson Vortices in Intrinsic Josephson Junctions :Exploration of In-phase Locked Superradiant Vortex Flow States

In order to clarify the ``superradiant'' conditions for the moving Josephson vortices to excite in-phase AC electromagnetic fields over all junctions, we perform large scale simulations of realistic dimensions for intrinsic Josephson junctions under the layer parallel magnetic field. Three clear step-like structures in the I-V curve are observed above a certain high field ($H > 1T$ in the present simulations), at which we find structural transitions in the moving flux-line lattice. The Josephson vortex flow states are accordingly classified into four regions (region I $\sim $ IV with increasing current), in each of which the power spectrum for the electric field oscillations at the sample edge are measured and typical snapshots for Josephson vortex configurations are displayed. Among the four regions, especially in the region III, an in-phase rectangular vortex lattice flow state emerges and the power spectrum shows remarkably sharp peak structure, i.e., superradiant state. Comparison of the simulation results with an eigenmode analysis for the transverse propagating Josephson plasma oscillations reveals that the resonances between Josephson vortex flow states and some of the eigenmodes are responsible for the clear flux lattice structural transitions. Furthermore, the theoretical analysis clarifies that the width of the superradiant state region in the I-V characteristics enlarges with decreasing both the superconducting and insulating layer thickness.

Confinement Physics and Topology in QCD

Based on the dual-superconductor picture, we study the confinement physics in QCD in terms of the monopole in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge using the SU(2) lattice QCD. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon component is forced to be small, and hence microscopic abelian dominance on the link variable is observed in the lattice QCD for the whole region of $β$. From the gluon-propagator analysis in the lattice QCD, the origin of abelian dominance for the long-range physics is interpreted as the effective mass $m_{ch} \simeq 0.9 {\rm GeV}$ of the charged gluon induced by the MA gauge fixing. In the MA gauge, there appears the macroscopic network of the monopole world-line covering the whole system, which would be identified as monopole condensation at a large scale. Using the dual Wilson loop in the MA gauge, we find the effective mass of the dual gluon field, $m_B \simeq $0.5GeV, which is the evidence of the dual Higgs mechanism by monopole condensation. The large fluctuation of off-diagonal gluons remains around the monopole in the MA gauge, and this charged-gluon rich region would provide the effective monopole size as the critical scale of the abelian projected QCD. Instantons are expected to appear in the charged-gluon rich region around the monopole world-line in the MA gauge, which leads to the local correlation between monopoles and instantons.

Instantons and Monopoles for Nonperturbative QCD

We study the nonperturbative QCD in terms of topological objects, i.e., QCD-monopoles and instantons. In the 't Hooft abelian gauge, QCD is reduced into an abelian gauge theory with QCD-monopoles, and the confinement mechanism can be understood with the dual superconductor picture. Regarding the flux-tube ring as the glueball, we study the glueball properties by combining the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory and the Nambu-Goto action. We find the strong correlations between instantons and monopole world-lines both in the continuum theory and in the lattice QCD. The nonperturbative QCD vacuum is filled with instantons and monopoles, and dense instantons generate a macroscopic network of the monopole world-line, which would be responsible for the confinement force in the infrared region.

Liquid Crystal Analogue of Abrikosov Vortex Flow in Superconductors

We extend the correspondence between the Renn-Lubensky Twist-Grain-Boundary-A phase in chiral liquid crystals and the Abrikosov mixed state in superconductors to dynamical aspects. We find that for a TGB sample with free boundaries, an external electric field applied along the helical axis induces a uniform translational motion of the grain boundary system - an analogue of the well-known mixed state flux flow. Likewise, an analogue of the mixed state Nernst effect is found. In much the same way in which the flux flow carries intercore electric fields generating Joule heat in an otherwise dissipation-free system, the grain boundary flow carries along polarized charges, resulting in a finite electric conductivity in a ferroelectric.
