Aging in Spin Glasses in three, four and infinite dimensions

The SUE machine is used to extend by a factor of 1000 the time-scale of previous studies of the aging, out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the Edwards-Anderson model with binary couplings, on large lattices (L=60). The correlation function, $C(t+t_w,t_w)$, $t_w$ being the time elapsed under a quench from high-temperature, follows nicely a slightly-modified power law for $t>t_w$. Very tiny (logarithmic), yet clearly detectable deviations from the full-aging $t/t_w$ scaling can be observed. Furthermore, the $t<t_w$ data shows clear indications of the presence of more than one time-sector in the aging dynamics. Similar results are found in four-dimensions, but a rather different behaviour is obtained in the infinite-dimensional $z=6$ Viana-Bray model. Most surprisingly, our results in infinite dimensions seem incompatible with dynamical ultrametricity. A detailed study of the link correlation function is presented, suggesting that its aging-properties are the same as for the spin correlation-function.

Off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations in the 3d Ising Spin Glass in a magnetic field

We study the fluctuation-dissipation relations for a three dimensional Ising spin glass in a magnetic field both in the high temperature phase as well as in the low temperature one. In the region of times simulated we have found that our results support a picture of the low temperature phase with broken replica symmetry, but a droplet behavior can not be completely excluded.

Dynamical generation of a gauge symmetry in the Double-Exchange model

It is shown that a bosonic formulation of the double-exchange model, one of the classical models for magnetism, generates dynamically a gauge-invariant phase in a finite region of the phase diagram. We use analytical methods, Monte Carlo simulations and Finite-Size Scaling analysis. We study the transition line between that region and the paramagnetic phase. The numerical results show that this transition line belongs to the Universality Class of the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model. The fact that one can define a Universality Class for the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model, different from the one of the O(N) models, is puzzling and somehow contradicts naive expectations about Universality.

Critical Behavior of the Three-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass

We have simulated, using parallel tempering, the three dimensional Ising spin glass model with binary couplings in a helicoidal geometry. The largest lattice (L=20) has been studied using a dedicated computer (the SUE machine). We have obtained, measuring the correlation length in the critical region, a strong evidence for a second-order finite temperature phase transition ruling out other possible scenarios like a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. Precise values for the $ν$ and $η$ critical exponents are also presented.

SUE: A Special Purpose Computer for Spin Glass Models

The use of last generation Programmable Electronic Components makes possible the construction of very powerful and competitive special purpose computers. We have designed, constructed and tested a three-dimensional Spin Glass model dedicated machine, which consists of 12 identical boards. Each single board can simulate 8 different systems, updating all the systems at every clock cycle. The update speed of the whole machine is 217ps/spin with 48 MHz clock frequency. A device devoted to fast random number generation has been developed and included in every board. The on-board reprogrammability permits us to change easily the lattice size, or even the update algorithm or the action. We present here a detailed description of the machine and the first runs using the Heat Bath algorithm.

Wegner-Houghton equation in low dimensions

We consider scalar field theories in dimensions lower than four in the context of the Wegner-Houghton renormalization group equations (WHRG). The renormalized trajectory makes a non-perturbative interpolation between the ultraviolet and the infrared scaling regimes. Strong indication is found that in two dimensions and below the models with polynomial interaction are always non-perturbative in the infrared scaling regime. Finally we check that these results do not depend on the regularization and we develop a lattice version of the WHRG in two dimensions.

Inverse Symmetry Breaking on the lattice: an accurate MC study

We present here a new MC study of ISB at finite temperature in a $Z_2\times Z_2$ $λϕ^4$ model in four dimensions. The results of our simulations, even if not conclusive, are favourable to ISB. Detection of the effect required measuring some critical couplings with six-digits precision, a level of accuracy that could be achieved only by a careful use of FSS techniques. The gap equations for the Debye masses, resulting from the resummation of the ring diagrams, seem to provide a qualitatively correct description of the data, while the simple one-loop formulae appear to be inadequate.

Critical properties of Ising model on Sierpinski fractals. A finite size scaling analysis approach

The present paper focuses on the order-disorder transition of an Ising model on a self-similar lattice. We present a detailed numerical study, based on the Monte Carlo method in conjunction with the finite size scaling method, of the critical properties of the Ising model on some two dimensional deterministic fractal lattices with different Hausdorff dimensions. Those with finite ramification order do not display ordered phases at any finite temperature, whereas the lattices with infinite connectivity show genuine critical behavior. In particular we considered two Sierpinski carpets constructed using different generators and characterized by Hausdorff dimensions d_H=log 8/log 3 = 1.8927.. and d_H=log 12/log 4 = 1.7924.., respectively. The data show in a clear way the existence of an order-disorder transition at finite temperature in both Sierpinski carpets. By performing several Monte Carlo simulations at different temperatures and on lattices of increasing size in conjunction with a finite size scaling analysis, we were able to determine numerically the critical exponents in each case and to provide an estimate of their errors. Finally we considered the hyperscaling relation and found indications that it holds, if one assumes that the relevant dimension in this case is the Hausdorff dimension of the lattice.

A model for nuclear matter fragmentation: phase diagram and cluster distributions

We develop a model in the framework of nuclear fragmentation at thermodynamic equilibrium which can be mapped onto an Ising model with constant magnetization. We work out the thermodynamic properties of the model as well as the properties of the fragment size distributions. We show that two types of phase transitions can be found for high density systems. They merge into a unique transition at low density. An analysis of the critical exponents which characterize observables for different densities in the thermodynamic limit shows that these transitions look like continuous second order transitions.

Antiferromagnetic O(N) models in four dimensions

We study the antiferromagnetic O(N) model in the F_4 lattice. Monte Carlo simulations are applied for investigating the behavior of the transition for N=2,3. The numerical results show a first order nature but with a large correlation length. The $N \to \infty$ limit is also considered with analytical methods.

A Dedicated Computer for Ising-like Spin Glass Models

We present a parallel machine, based on programmable devices, dedicated to simulate spin glass models with Z2 variables and short range interaction. A working prototype is described for two lattices containing 312x312 spins each with an update time of 50 ns per spin. The final version of the three dimensional parallel machine is discussed with spin update time up to 312 ps.

Is trivial the antiferromagnetic RP(2) model in four dimensions?

We study the antiferromagnetic RP(2) model in four dimensions. We find a second order transition with two order parameters, one ferromagnetic and the other antiferromagnetic. The antiferromagnetic sector has mean-field critical exponents and a renormalized coupling which goes to zero in the continuum limit. The exponents of the ferromagnetic channel are not the mean-field ones, but the difference can be interpreted as logarithmic corrections. We perform a detailed analysis of these corrections and conclude the triviality of the continuum limit of this model.

Antiferromagnetism in four dimensions: search for non-triviality

We present antiferromagnetism as a mechanism capable of modifying substantially the phase diagram and the critical behaviour of statistical mechanical models. This is particularly relevant in four dimensions, due to the connection between second order transition points and the continuum limit as a quantum field theory. We study three models with an antiferromagnetic interaction: the Ising and the O(4) Models with a second neighbour negative coupling, and the $\RP{2}$ Model. Different conclusions are obtained depending on the model.

Phase diagram of d=4 Ising Model with two couplings

We study the phase diagram of the four dimensional Ising model with first and second neighbour couplings, specially in the antiferromagnetic region, by using Mean Field and Monte Carlo methods. From the later, all the transition lines seem to be first order except that between ferromagnetic and disordered phases in a region including the first-neighbour Ising transition point.

A multisite microcanonical updating method

We have made a study of several update algorithms using the XY model. We find that sequential local overrelaxation is not ergodic at the scale of typical Monte Carlo simulation time. We have introduced a new multisite microcanonical update method, which yields results compatible with those of random overrelaxation and the microcanonical demon algorithm, which are very much slower, all being incompatible with the sequential overrelaxation results.

A Monte Carlo study of O(3) antiferromagnetic models in three dimensions

We study three antiferromagnetic formulations of the O(3) spin model in three dimensions by means of Monte Carlo simulations: 1. a two parameter $σ$ model with nearest and next to nearest neighbors couplings in a cubic lattice; 2. a face centered cubic lattice with nearest neighbors interaction; 3. a cubic lattice with a set of fully frustrating couplings. We discuss in all cases the vacua properties and analyze the phase transitions. Using Finite Size Scaling analysis we conclude that all phase transitions found are of first order.

Hot and repulsive traffic flow

We study a message passing model, applicable also to traffic problems. The model is implemented in a discrete lattice, where particles move towards their destination, with fluctuations around the minimal distance path. A repulsive interaction between particles is introduced in order to avoid the appearance of traffic jam. We have studied the parameter space finding regions of fluid traffic, and saturated ones, being separated by abrupt changes. The improvement of the system performance is also explored, by the introduction of a non-constant potential acting on the particles. Finally, we deal with the behavior of the system when temporary failures in the transmission occurs.
