First-Principles Correlated Approach to the Normal State of Strontium Ruthenate

The interplay between multiple bands, sizable multi-band electronic correlations and strong spin-orbit coupling may conspire in selecting a rather unusual unconventional pairing symmetry in layered Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. This mandates a detailed revisit of the normal state and, in particular, the $T$-dependent incoherence-coherence crossover. Using a modern first-principles correlated view, we study this issue in the actual structure of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ and present a unified and quantitative description of a range of unusual physical responses in the normal state. Armed with these, we propose that a new and important element, that of dominant multi-orbital charge fluctuations in a Hund's metal, may be a primary pair glue for unconventional superconductivity. Thereby we establish a connection between the normal state responses and superconductivity in this system.

Correlated Non-Gaussian phase fluctuations in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterointerface

We probe the existence of large correlated non-Gaussian phase fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting phase transition in the conducting layer residing at the interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. The non-Gaussian fluctuations appear between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature $T_{BKT}$ and the mean field transition temperature $T_C$. Subsequent theoretical analysis reveals that non-Gaussianity arises predominantly due to the percolative transition of a Josephson coupled network of superconductors. Our results confirm that the superconductivity in this system is confined to two-dimensions. Our study of the non-Gaussian resistance fluctuation spectrum provides a novel means to explore the BKT-transition in two-dimensional inhomogeneous superconductors.

Influence of structural disorder and Coulomb interactions in the superconductor-insulator transition applied to boron doped diamond

The influence of disorder, both structural (non-diagonal) and on-site (diagonal), is studied through the inhomogeneous Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory in narrow-band disordered superconductors with a view towards understanding superconductivity in boron doped diamond (BDD) and boron- doped nanocrystalline diamond (BNCD) films. We employ the attractive Hubbard model within the mean field approximation, including the Coulomb interaction between holes in the narrow acceptor band. We study substitutional boron incorporation in a triangular lattice, with disorder in the form of random potential fluctuations at the boron sites. The role of structural disorder was studied through non-uniform variation of the tight-binding coupling parameter where, following ex- perimental findings, we incorporate the concurrent increase in structural disorder with increasing boron concentration. We illustrate stark differences between the effects of structural and on-site disorder and show that structural disorder has a much greater effect on the density of states, mean pairing amplitude and superfluid density than on-site potential disorder. We show that structural disorder can increase the mean pairing amplitude while the spectral gap in the density of states decreases with states eventually appearing within the spectral gap for high levels of disorder. This study illustrates how the effects of structural disorder can explain some of the features found in superconducting BDD and BNCD films such as a tendency towards saturation of the T_{c} with boron doping and deviations from the expected BCS theory in the temperature dependence of the pairing amplitude and spectral gap.

Edwards polaron formation : From one to three dimension

Employing a self-consistent (optimized) variational diagonalization scheme, we investigate the formation of polaronic quasiparticles in a spinless fermion-boson transport model that couples the movement of charge carriers to fluctuations and correlations of a background medium. The background is parameterized by bosonic degrees of freedom. The variational fermion-boson Hilbert space is constructed to achieve high accuracy in one to three spatial dimensions with modest computational requirements. To characterize the ground-state properties of the Edwards model in the single-particle sector, we present exact numerical results for the polaron band dispersion, quasiparticle weight, Drude weight, mass enhancement, and the particle-boson correlations in a wide parameter regime. In the Edwards model, transport will be quasifree, diffusive or boson-assisted in the weakly fermion-boson coupled, fluctuation-dominated or strongly correlated regimes, respectively. Thereby correlated transport is not only assisted but also limited by the bosonic excitations. As a result, the Drude weight remains finite even in the limit of very small boson frequencies. For a strongly correlated background, closed loops are important, in any dimension, to generate a finite effective particle mass even when the free fermion has an infinite mass.

Manifestations of Strange Metallicity in Inelastic Neutron Studies

Emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) found in multi-band correlated systems leads to a non-perturbative obliteration of the Landau Fermi liquid in favor of a novel metallic state exhibiting anomalous infra-red (branch-cut) continuum features in one- and two-particle responses. We use a combination of $(1)$ dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) using the continuous-time-quantum Monte-Carlo (CTQMC) solver for a two-band Hubbard model and $(2)$ analytic arguments from an effective bosonized description to investigate strange metal features in inelastic neutron scattering studies for cuprates. Specifically, restricting our attention to symmetry-unbroken metallic phase, we study how emergence of an OSMP leads to qualitatively novel features in $(i)$ the dynamical spin and charge susceptibilities, and $(ii)$ phonon response in the strange metal, in detail. Extinction of the Landau quasiparticle pole in the one-electron propagator in the OSMP mirrors the emergence of critical liquid-like features in the dynamical spin response. This novel finding also underpins truly anomalous features in phonon dynamics, which we investigate by coupling half-breathing phonons in the specific context of cuprates to such a multi-electronic continuum. We find good understanding of various anomalies encountered in experimental inelastic neutron scattering studies in the near-optimally doped cuprates. We also extend these results in a phenomenological way to argue how modification of phonon spectra in underdoped cuprates can be reconciled with proposals for a nematic-plus-d-wave charge modulation order in the pseudogap state. We also study the issue of the dominant "pair glue" contributions to superconductivity, allowing us to interpret recent pump-probe results within a strange metal scenario.

Feasibility of a metamagnetic transition in correlated systems

The long-standing issue of the competition between the magnetic field and the Kondo effect, favoring, respectively, triplet and singlet ground states is addressed using a cluster slave-rotor mean field theory for the Hubbard model and its spin-correlated, spin-frustrated extensions in 2 dimension. The metamagnetic jump is established and compared with earlier results of dynamical mean-field theory. The present approach also reproduces the emergent super-exchange energy scale in the insulating side. A scaling is found for the critical Zeeman field in terms of the intrinsic coherence scale just below the metal-insulator transition where the critical spin fluctuations are soft. The conditions for metamagnetism to appear at a reasonable field are also underlined. The Gutzwiller analysis on the 2D Hubbard model and a quantum Monte Carlo calculation on the Heisenberg spin system are performed to check the limiting cases of the cluster slave-rotor results for the Hubbard model. Low-field scaling features for magnetization are discussed.

Quantum critical dynamics of a magnetic impurity in a semiconducting host

We have investigated the finite temperature dynamics of the singlet to doublet continuous quantum phase transition in the gapped Anderson impurity model using hybridization expansion continuous time quantum Monte-Carlo. Using the self-energy and the longitudinal static susceptibility, we obtain a phase diagram in the temperature-gap plane. The separatrix between the low temperature local moment phase and the high temperature generalized Fermi liquid phase of this phase diagram is shown to be the lower bound of the critical scaling region of the zero gap quantum critical point of interacting type. We have computed the nuclear magnetic spin-lattice relaxation rate, the Knight shift and the Korringa ratio, which show strong deviations for any non-zero gap from the corresponding quantities in the gapless Kondo screened impurity case.

Orbital Ordering in Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$V$_2$O$_4$: A First Principles Study

Long range orbital order has been investigated in Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$V$_2$O$_4$ as a function of doping (x) using first principles density functional theory calculations including the effects of Coulomb correlation and spin-orbit interaction within GGA+U and GGA+U+SO approximations. Through a detailed analysis of corresponding Wannier orbital projections of the Vanadium d bands, we have clearly established that for x$\le$0.6, the orbital order at V sites consists of a linear superposition of d$_{xz}$ and d$_{yz}$ orbitals of the type d$_{xz}\pm$d$_{yz}$. Within each ab-plane a ferro-orbital ordering of either d$_{xz}$+d$_{yz}$ or d$_{xz}$-d$_{yz}$ is observed which alternates in successive ab-planes along the c-direction. On the contrary, for x$>$0.6, it is the d$_{xz}$ or d$_{yz}$ orbital which orders at V sites in successive ab-planes along c-direction (so called A-type ordering). At Fe sites, we observe an orbital ordering of d$_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals for x$\le$0.6 and d$_{z^2}$ orbitals for x$>$0.6. Effect of spin-orbit interaction on orbital ordering is found to be not significant in the entire range of doping studied.

Exciton condensation in an extended spinless Falicov Kimball model in the presence of orbital magnetic fields

An extended, spinless Falicov-Kimball model in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field is investigated employing Hartree-Fock self-consistent mean-field theory in two dimensions. In the presence of an orbital field the hybridization-dependence of the excitonic average ${ Δ=<{{d_i}^\dagger} {f_i}>}$ is modified. The exciton responses in subtle different ways for different chosen values of the magnetic flux consistent with Hofstadter's well-known spectrum. The excitonic average is suppressed by the application of magnetic field. We further examine the effect of Coulomb interaction and $f$-electron hopping on the condensation of exciton for some rational values of the applied magnetic field. The interband Coulomb interaction enhances the $Δ$ exponentially, while a non-zero $f$-electron hopping reduces it. A strong commensurability effect of the magnetic flux on the behaviour of the excitons is observed.

Mott transitions and Novel Orders in Multi-Orbital Models: The Relevance of Structural "Double Exchange"

In real transition-metal oxides, the so-called GdFeO3 octahedral tilt is long known to be a relevant control parameter influencing the range of orbital and magnetic ordered states found across families of cubic perovskite families. Their precise role in the interplay between itinerance and localisation, long known to underpin Mottness in d-band oxides, has however received much less attention. We analyse the relevance of the GdFeO3 tilt in detail in a representative setting of a partially-filled e g orbital system. We identify a new generalised principle of broad relevance, namely, that this tilt acts like a structural "double exchange" and acts contrary to the well-known Anderson-Hasegawa double exchange. As a function of this tilt, therefore, a phase transition from a Mott-Hubbard insulator to an incoherent bad-metal occurs as an effective band-width-controlled Mott transition. We analyse the incoherent metal in detail by studying one- and two-particle spectral responses and propose that this selective-metal is a novel orbital analogue of the FL* state with fractionalised orbitons. Finally, we apply these ideas to qualitatively discuss the effect of strain on thin films of such d-band oxides on suitable substrates, and discuss the exciting possibility of engineering novel ordered phases, such as unconventional circulating currents, nematics and superconductors, by suitable strain engineering in TMO thin films.

Fermiology in a Local Quantum Critical Metal

Recent experimental work has brought the twin issues of the origin of non-Lifshitz-Kosevich scaling in de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and its precise relation to anomalously broad non-quasiparticle spectral features in "strange" metals, to the forefront. Here, we revisit these issues in the specific context of a "local" quantum critical phase in an extended periodic Anderson model (EPAM). In contrast to the famed Kondo-RKKY scenarios for local quantum criticality, strong local valence fluctuations cause Kondo destruction in the EPAM. We uncover a common underlying element, namely, the Kondo-destruction-driven infra-red continuum branch-cut behavior in the one-electron propagator, as the relevant feature that governs both non-Lifshitz-Kosevich scaling in dHvA and anomalously broad non-quasiparticle spectral responses in such a "strange" metal. Employing a non-perturbative scheme to treat effects of non-magnetic disorder in this version of a local strange metal, we propose a modified Dingle scaling that can also be used to test "local" criticality scenarios. Thus, our findings potentially afford an internally consistent description of novel fermiology expected to manifest in strange metals arising as a result of Kondo-destruction coming from an underlying orbital-selective Mott transition.

Emergent Quantum Coherence from Instabilities of a Perturbed Fractionalized Spin Liquid

Effects of perturbations on topologically ordered (TO) states with fractionalized excitations is very intriguing. While small perturbations are not expected to affect a robust TO, sizable perturbations must lead to onset of novel routes to order(s). Observability of such emergent orders in real condensed matter systems continues to be an open issue of paramount interest. Here, we detail how a featureless Kitaev spin liquid with rigorous TO gives way to partial topological ordered state(s) coexisting with a wide staircase of novel `excitonic' orders of fractionalized entities in a Zeeman field. We provide quasi-exact and novel realization for a range of strange features, from nodal spin-metals, fractionalization in selective-Mott states, to Luttinger surfaces and hidden coherence, all characteristics of the influential resonating- valence-bond as well as fractionalized-Fermi-Liquid views in the context of strange metals. As a novel application, we show how Josephson-junction array may exhibit fractional Josephson oscillations upon flux tuning as a particularly novel manifestation of emergent quantum coherence.

Multi-band theory of superconductivity at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

We present a multi-band model for superconductivity at the metallic interface between insulating oxides LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ (001). Using a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, formulated with the realistic bands at the interface, we investigate the spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings in intra-band and inter-band channels. We find that the Rashba and atomic spin-orbit interactions at the interface induce singlet pairing in the inter-band channel and triplet pairing in both the intra-band and inter-band channels when the pairing amplitude in the singlet intra-band channel is finite. The gate-voltage variation of superconductivity is resolved in different pairing channels, compared with experimental results and found to match quite well. Interestingly, an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature by external in-plane magnetic field is found revealing the existence of a hidden superconducting state above the observed one. As the interface is known to possess high level of inhomogeneity, we explore the role of non-magnetic disorder incorporating thermal phase fluctuations by using a Monte-Carlo method. We show that even after the transition to the non-superconducting phase, driven by temperature or magnetic field, the interface possesses localized Cooper pairs whose signature was observed in previous experiments.

Orbital Effects of Strong Magnetic Field on a 2-D Holstein Polaron

We investigate the orbital effects of strong external magnetic field on the ground state properties of a two dimensional holstein polaron, employing variational approaches based on the exact diagonalization (VAED). From the ground state energy and the wave function we calculate electron-phonon correlation function, the average phonon number and the Drude weight and investigate the evolution of a 2D holstein polaron as a function of the magnetic flux. Although the external magnetic field affects the polaron throughout the parameter regime, we show that the magnetic field has a stronger effect on a loosely bound (spatially extended) polaron. We also find that the magnetic field can be used as a tuning parameter, particularly for weakly coupled polaron, to reduce the spatial extent of a large polaron.

Topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

The interface between two band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ exhibits low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with an in-plane ferromagnetic order. We show that topological superconductivity hosting Majorana bound states can be induced at the interface by applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the interface. We find that the dephasing effect of the in-plane magnetization on the topological superconducting state can be overcomed by tuning a gate-voltage. We analyze the vortex-core excitations showing the zero-energy Majorana bound states and the effect of non-magnetic disorder on them. Finally, we propose an experimental geometry where such topological excitations can be realized.

Emergent Spin Hall phase at a Lifshitz transition from competing orders

The effects of competing orders, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, on a Fermi liquid are well established. A comprehensive understanding of such a competition in a metal whose Fermi surface has a non-trivial topology is yet to be achieved. Here, we address this question in a prototypical system: the 2D Rashba semimetal. We show that dominant superconductivity interplays with Rashba spin orbit interactions (SOI) in forming a novel intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) with gapless edge states of Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) quasiparticles. As in the case of itinerant ferromagnets, the intrinsic AHE arises from Berry curvature effects in the band structure. This phenomenon is robust even as sub-dominant ferromagnetism dramatically changes the nature of pairing symmetry. An emergent spin Hall phase involving a change in Fermi-surface topology is found to accompany this Lifshitz quantum phase transition. We demonstrate the coexistence of the original and novel AHE in the presence of weak disorder. We offer a comparison of our results with experiments on the two dimensional electron gas at oxide hetero-interfaces as well as make some testable predictions.

Charge-Density-Wave Order in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$

Competition between collective states like charge density wave and superconductivity is played out in some of the transition metal dichalcogenides unencumbered by the spin degrees of freedom. Although 2H-NbSe$_2$ has received much less attention than some of the other members of the family (like 1T-TiSe$_2$ and 2H-TaSe$_2$), it shows superconductivity at 7.2 K and incommensurate charge ordering at 33 K. Recent experiments, notably Angle Resolved Photoemission spectroscopy, have cast serious doubts on the mechanism of Fermi surface nesting via electron-phonon interaction. The normal state has been found to be a poor, incoherent metal and remarkably, the coherence increases in the broken symmetry state. From a preformed excitonic liquid scenario, we show that there exists a natural understanding of the experimental data on 2H-NbSe$_2$ based on electron-electron interaction. The collective instabilities, in this scenario, are viewed as a condensation of an incoherent excitonic liquid already present at high temperature.

Phase segregation of superconductivity and ferromagnetism at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

The highly conductive two-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface between insulating SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$ shows low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism. The Rashba spin-orbit interaction with in-plane Zeeman field of the system favors $p_x \pm i p_y$-wave superconductivity at finite momentum. Owing to the intrinsic disorder at the interface, the role of spatial inhomogeneity on the superconducting and ferromagnetic states becomes important. We find that for strong disorder, the system breaks up into mutually excluded regions of superconductivity and ferromagnetism. This inhomogeneity-driven electronic phase separation accounts for the unusual coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism observed at the interface.
