Phonons and Anisotropic Thermal Expansion Behaviour of NiX (X = S, Se, Te)

Metal Chalcogenides have been known for important technological applications and have attracted continuous interest in their structure, electronic, thermal and transport properties. Here we present first principles calculations of the vibrational and thermodynamic properties of NiX (X = S, Se, Te) compounds along with inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon spectrum in NiSe. The measured phonon spectrum is in very good agreement with the computed result. We also report the measurement of thermal expansion behavior of NiSe using X-ray diffraction from 13 K to 300 K. The change in the hexagonal c lattice parameter in NiSe is considerably greater as compared to a parameter. The ab-initio calculated anisotropic Grüneisen parameters of the different phonon modes in all the chalcogenides along with the elastic constants are used to compute anisotropic thermal expansion behviour, which is found in good agreement with experiments. The displacement pattern of phonons indicate that difference in amplitudes of Ni and X atoms follow the anisotropy of thermal expansion behavior along c- and a-axis.

Spin correlation in trigonal EuMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$

The trigonal structure of EuMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an anomaly in the tetragonal 122-type pnictide family. We report detailed investigation of the underlying magnetic correlations in single crystal EuMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ using high resolution elastic neutron scattering measurements. The system undergoes through two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at $T$ = 135 K and 14.4 K, respectively. Numerical modeling of the experimental data reveals the long range antiferromagnetic correlation of Mn-ions in the $a-b$ plane below $T_N1$ = 135 K. Mn spins are aligned closer to the diagonal axis of the unit cell. The lower temperature transition, below $T_N2$ = 14.4 K, is found to arise due to the long range antiferromagnetic correlation of Eu spins that are rotated by $θ$ = 55 degree from the $c$-axis of the unit cell.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the Kondo lattice compound CeAgAs$_2$

We report on the single crystal growth and anisotropic physical properties of CeAgAs$_2$. The compound crystallizes as on ordered variant of the HfCuSi$_2$-type crystal structure and adopts the orthorhombic space group $Pmca$~(\#57) with two symmetry inequivalent cerium atomic positions in the unit cell. The orthorhombic crystal structure of our single crystal was confirmed from the powder x-ray diffraction and from electron diffraction patterns obtained from the transmission electron microscope. The anisotropic physical properties have been investigated on a good quality single crystal by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical transport and heat capacity. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements revealed that this compound orders antiferromagnetically with two closely spaced magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1} = 6$~K and $T_{\rm N2} = 4.9$~K. Magnetization studies have revealed a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) with an easy axis of magnetization along the [010] direction. The magnetic susceptibility measured along the [001] direction exhibited a broad hump in the temperature range 50 to 250~K, while typical Curie-Weiss behaviour was observed along the other two orthogonal directions. The electrical resistivity and the heat capacity measurements revealed that CeAgAs$_2$ is a Kondo lattice system with a magnetic ground state.

Orbital-dependent electron dynamics in Fe-pnictide superconductors

We report on orbital-dependent quasiparticle dynamics in EuFe$_2$As$_2$, a parent compound of Fe-based superconductors and a novel way to experimentally identify this behavior, using time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy across the spin density wave transition. We observe two different relaxation time scales for photo-excited d$_x$$_z$/d$_y$$_z$ and d$_x$$_y$ electrons. While d$_x$$_z$/d$_y$$_z$ electrons relax faster through the electron-electron scattering channel, showing an itinerant character, d$_x$$_y$ electrons form a quasi-equilibrium state with the lattice due to their localized character, and the state decays slowly. Our findings suggest that electron correlation in Fe-pnictides is an important property, which should be taken into careful account when describing the electronic properties of both parent and electron-doped compounds, and therefore establish a strong connection with cuprates.

Zigzag spin chains in the spin-5/2 antiferromagnet Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba$_{2}$Mn(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Mn$^{2+}$ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at $T_N\simeq 5$\,K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k} = (\frac12\, 0\, \frac12)$ and ordered moment of $4.33\pm0.08~μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 1.5\,K, pointing along the $c$ direction. Direction of the magnetic moment is chosen by the single-ion anisotropy, which is relatively weak compared to the isostructural Ni$^{2+}$ compound. Geometrical frustration has strong impact on thermodynamic properties of Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$, but manifestations of the frustration are different from those in Ba$_2$Ni(PO$_4)_2$, where frustration by isotropic exchange couplings is minor, yet strong and competing single-ion anisotropies are present. A spin-flop transition is observed around 2.5\,T. The evaluation of the magnetic structure from the ground state via the spin-flop state to the field-polarized ferromagnetic state has been revealed by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study as a function of magnetic field below $T_N$. Finally, a magnetic phase diagram in the $H-T$ plane is obtained.

Hidden phase in parent Fe-pnictide superconductors

We investigate the origin of exoticity in Fe-based systems via studying the Fermiology of CaFe2As2 employing Angle Resolved Photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). While the Fermi surfaces (FSs) at 200 K and 31 K are observed to exhibit two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) topology, respectively, the FSs at intermediate temperatures reveal emergence of the 3D topology at much lower temperature than the structural & magnetic phase transition temperature (170 K, for the sample under scrutiny). This leads to the conclusion that the evolution of FS topology is not directly driven by the structural transition. In addition, we discover the existence in ambient conditions of energy bands related to the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase. These bands are distinctly resolved in the high-photon energy spectra exhibiting strong Fe 3d character. They gradually move to higher binding energies due to thermal compression with cooling, leading to the emergence of 3D topology in the Fermi surface. These results reveal the so-far hidden existence of a cT phase in ambient conditions, which is argued to lead to quantum fluctuations responsible for the exotic electronic properties in Fe-pnictide superconductors.

Extreme magnetoresistance induced by Zeeman effect-driven electron-hole compensation and topological protection in MoSi$_2$

The magnetoresistance is the magnetic field induced change of electrical resistivity of a material. Recent studies have revealed extremely large magnetoresistance in several non-magnetic semimetals, which has been explained on the basis of either electron-hole compensation or the Fermi surface topology, or the combination of both. Here, we present a single crystal study on MoSi$_2$, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance, approaching almost 10$^7$ % at 2 K and 14 T magnetic field. It is found that the electron-hole compensation level in MoSi$_2$ evolves with magnetic field, which is resulted from strong Zeeman effect, and found beneficial in boosting the large non-saturating magnetoresistance. The non-trivial Berry phase in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the moderate suppression of backward scattering of the charge carriers lend support for the topological nature of this semimetal. The ultra-large carrier mobility of the topologically protected charge carriers reinforces the magnetoresistance of MoSi2 to an unprecedented large value.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re6Hf:further evidence for unconventional behaviour in the alpha-Mn family of materials

The discovery of new families of unconventional superconductors is important both experimentally and theoretically, especially if it challenges current models and thinking. By using muon spin relaxation in zero-field, time-reversal symmetry breaking has been observed in Re6Hf. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the superfluid density exhibits s-wave superconductivity with an enhanced electron-phonon coupling. This, coupled with the results from isostructural Re6Zr, shows that the Re6X family are indeed a new and important group of unconventional superconductors.

Possible multigap Type-I superconductivity in the layered Boride RuB$_2$

The structure of the layered transition-metal Borides $A$B$_2$ ($A =$ Os, Ru) is built up by alternating $T$ and B layers with the B layers forming a puckered honeycomb. Here we report superconducting properties of RuB$_2$ with a $T_c \approx 1.5$K using measurements of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature $T$, magnetization $M$ versus magnetic field $H$, resistivity versus $T$, and heat capacity versus $T$ at various $H$. We observe a reduced heat capacity anomaly at $T_c$ given by $ΔC/γT_c \approx 1.1$ suggesting multi-gap superconductivity. Strong support for this is obtained by the successful fitting of the electronic specific heat data to a two-gap model with gap values $Δ_1/k_BT_c \approx 1.88$ and $Δ_2/k_BT_c \approx 1.13$. Additionally, $M$ versus $H$ measurements reveal a behaviour consistent with Type-I superconductivity. This is confirmed by estimates of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ\approx 0.1$--$0.66$. These results strongly suggest multi-gap Type-I superconductivity in RuB$_2$. We also calculate the band structure and obtain the Fermi surface for RuB$_2$. The Fermi surface consists of one quasi-two-dimensional sheet and two nested ellipsoidal sheets very similar to OsB$_2$. An additional small $4^{\rm th}$ sheet is also found for RuB$_2$. RuB$_2$ could thus be a rare example of a multi-gap Type-I superconductor.

Magnetocaloric effect and magnetic phase diagram of EuRhAl4Si2

EuRhAl4Si2, crystallizes in tetragonal crystal structure and orders antiferromagnetically at ~12 K. The isothermal magnetization along the two principle directions is highly anisotropic despite Eu2+ being an S-state ion. The variation of entropy change, which is a measure of MCE, with field and temperature, calculated from the isothermal magnetization data taken at various temperatures along the principal crystallographic directions present interesting behavior in EuRhAl4Si2. In the magnetically ordered state the entropy change is non-monotonic below spin flip fields; however, in the paramagnetic region, it is negative irrespective of the strength of applied magnetic field. For H || [001] the maximum entropy change at 7 T is -21 J/Kg K around TN, which is large and comparable to the largest known values in this temperature range. The variation of the MCE with field strongly depends upon the direction of the applied magnetic field. Magnetic phase diagram of EuRhAl4Si2 derived from M(H) data is also constructed.

Superconducting Properties and $μ$SR Study of the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$

The properties of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor ($α$-$\textit{Mn}$ structure) Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$ is investigated using resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. These measurements suggest that Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$ is a weakly coupled ($λ_{e-ph}$ $\sim$ 0.53) type-II superconductor ($κ_{GL}$ $\approx$ 61) having a bulk superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 3.07 K. The specific heat data in the superconductive regime fits well with the single-gap BCS model indicating nodeless s-wave superconductivity in Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$. The $μ$SR measurements also confirm $\textit{s}$-wave superconductivity with the preserved time-reversal symmetry.

Heat capacity evidence for proximity to the Kitaev QSL in A$_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li)

The honeycomb lattice iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) are candidates for realization of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model although their proximity to Kitaev's quantum Spin-Liquid (QSL) is still debated. We report on heat capacity $C$ and entropy $S_{mag}$ for $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) in the temperature range $0.075~{\rm K}\leq T \leq 155$~K\@. We find a well separated two-peak structure for the magnetic heat capacity $C_{mag}$ for both materials and $S_{mag}$ for Na$_2$IrO$_3$ shows a shoulder between the peaks with a value close to ${1\over 2}$Rln$2$. These features signal the fractionalization of spins into Majornana Fermions close to Kitaev's QSL [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 115122 (2015); Phys. Rev. B {\bf 93}, 174425 (2016).]. These results provide the first thermodynamic evidence that $A_2$IrO$_3$ are situated close to the Kitaev QSL. Additionally we measure the high temperature $T\leq 1000$~K magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and estimate the Weiss temperature $θ$ in the true paramagnetic state. We find $θ\approx -127$~K and $-105$~K, for Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$, respectively.

Superzone gap formation and low lying crystal electric field levels in PrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy exhibited in PrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been investigated by measuring the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. PrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the well known ThCr$_2$Si$_2$\--type tetragonal structure. The antiferromagnetic ordering is confirmed as 5.1~K with the [001]-axis as the easy axis of magnetization. A superzone gap formation is observed from the electrical resistivity measurement when the current is passed along the [001] direction. The crystal electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the heat capacity measurements confirms a doublet ground state with a relatively low over all CEF level splitting. The CEF level spacings and the Zeeman splitting at high fields become comparable and lead to metamagnetic transition at 34~T due to the CEF level crossing.

DC Magnetization study of Ni$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ nanoalloy

Ni$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ bulk alloys exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) at the critical concentration $x_c \sim$ 0.37. A spin glass phase arises below the Ferromagnetism by controlling the short range interaction between Ni and Rh atoms. we have synthesized nanoalloys of two different concentrations with two different reaction times by chemical reflux method. From the dc magnetization measurements, existence of ferromagnetism and spin glass phase in these nanoalloys is confirmed. A step like feature in both ZFC and FC curve at certain temperature indicates the existence of the spin glass phase.

Giant Rashba effect at the topological surface of PrGe revealing antiferromagnetic spintronics

Rashba spin-orbit splitting in the magnetic materials opens up a new perspective in the field of spintronics. Here, we report a giant Rashba-type spin-orbit effect on PrGe [010] surface in the paramagnetic phase with Rashba coefficient α_R=5 eVÅ. Significant changes in the electronic band structure has been observed across the phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (44 K) and from antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ground state (41.5 K). We find that Pr 4f states in PrGe is strongly hybridized with the Pr 5d and Ge 4s-4p states near the Fermi level. The behavior of Rashba effect is found to be different in the k_x and the k_y directions showing electron-like and the hole-like bands, respectively. The possible origin of Rashba effect in the paramagnetic phase is related to the anti-parallel spin polarization present in this system. First-principles density functional calculations of Pr terminated surface with the anti-parallel spins shows a fair agreement with the experimental results. We find that the anti-parallel spins are strongly coupled to the lattice such that the PrGe system behaves like weak ferromagnetic system. Analysis of the energy dispersion curves at different magnetic phases showed that there is a competition between the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the exchange interaction which gives rise to the magnetic ordering in PrGe. Supporting evidences of the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction are observed as anisotropic magnetoresistance with respect to field direction and first-order type hysteresis in the X-ray diffraction measurements. A giant negative magnetoresistance of 43% in the antiferromagnetic phase and tunable Rashba parameter with temperature across the magnetic transitions makes this material a suitable candidate for technological application in the antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

Crystal structure and anisotropic magnetic properties of new ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound Ce(Cu,Al,Si)2

Single crystals of the new compound CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 have been grown by high-temperature solution growth method using a eutectic Al-Si mixture as flux. This compound is derived from the binary CeSi2 (tetragonal ThSi2-type, Pearson symbol tI12, space group I41/amd) obtained by partial substitution of Si by Cu and Al atoms but showing full occupation of the Si crystal site (8e). While CeSi2 is a well-known valence-fluctuating paramagnetic compound, the CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 phase orders ferromagnetically at TC = 9.3 K. At low temperatures the easy-axis of magnetization is along the a-axis, which re-orients itself along the c-axis above 30 K. The presence of hysteresis in the magnetization curve, negative temperature coefficient of resistivity at high temperatures, reduced jump in the heat capacity and a relatively lower entropy released up to the ordering temperature, and enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient (~100 mJ/mol K2) show that CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 is a Kondo lattice ferromagnetic, moderate heavy fermion compound. Analysis of the high temperature heat capacity data in the paramagnetic region lets us infer that the crystal electric field split doublet levels are located at 178 and 357 K, respectively, and Kondo temperature (8.4 K) is of the order of TC in CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58.

Experimental evidence for bulk superconductivity in pure Bismuth single crystal at ambient pressure

Bulk rhombohedral Bismuth (Bi) at ambient pressure is a semimetal and it remains in the normal state down to 10~mK. The superconductivity (SC) in bulk Bi is thought to be very unlikely due to extremely low carrier density. The question of SC in Bi has remained unsolved both theoretically and experimentally. Here, we report first ever observation of bulk SC in highly pure Bi single crystals (99.9999\%) below 0.53~mK under ambient pressure with an estimated critical magnetic field of 5.2~$μ$T at 0~K. The conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory cannot explain the observed SC in Bi, since the adiabatic approximation of the BCS theory, $ω_D/E_F<< 1$, does not hold true for Bi. Bi has a multi-valley type electronic band structure and SC in Bi could be brought about by the inter-valley electron-phonon coupling. Such a scenario calls for new theoretical ideas to understand SC in such low carrier systems with unusual band structure in the non-adiabatic limit, $ω_D/E_F \gtrsim 1$. The observation of SC in Bi makes it the lowest carrier density superconductor surpassing the record held by doped SrTiO$_3$ for nearly 50 years.

Superconducting Properties of the Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor Re6Hf

The synthesis and detailed characterization of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_{6}$Hf using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization, transport and thermodynamic measurements are reported. XRD confirms the crystal structure of Re$_{6}$Hf to be cubic noncentrosymmetric $α$-\textit{Mn} with a lattice parameter a = 9.6850(3)\textÅ. Resistivity, DC and AC magnetization confirms the bulk superconducting transition T$_{c}^{onset} \sim $ ~ 5.96 K. The lower critical field H$_{C1}(0)\approx$ 5.6 mT and upper critical H$_{C2}(0)$ was found to be around 12.2 T which is greater than the Pauli limiting field, indicating unconventional behavior in Re$_{6}$Hf and leads to the possibility of triplet pairing. A sharp discontinuity in the specific heat data was observed around T$_{c}$ indicating bulk superconductivity, and the normalized specific heat jump is $ΔC_{el}$/$γ_{n}$T$_{c}$ = 1.53 which is in close agreement with BCS value. Superconducting electronic specific heat data is fitted reasonably well for an exponential relation with Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ$) showing a linear relation with magnetic field suggesting that in Re$_{6}$Hf dominant pairing channel is s-wave with isotropic superconducting gap parameter without nodes.
