Dual AGN and Multiple SMBH Systems in the Era of SKAO

We present a radio-oriented review of current strategies for the detection and characterization of dual active galactic nuclei (DAGN) and supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), emphasizing the crucial role of radio interferometry in advancing this field. We discuss how high-resolution radio imaging - particularly through very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) - provides a unique, dust-unbiased tool to identify multiple accreting SMBHs, disentangle AGN-related emission from star formation, and trace components from tens of kpc to sub-parsec scales. We summarize current observational limitations, such as insufficient sensitivity-resolution combination and area coverage. We then outline how the SKAO will overcome these constraints through its unprecedented combination of sensitivity, survey speed, imaging fidelity and angular resolution, enabling the discovery and characterization of dual and binary SMBHs from the nearby Universe to the epoch of reionization. Several science cases are presented, including radio follow-ups of optical/infrared-selected DAGN, direct blind radio selection of DAGN, studies of compact bound SMBHBs, and the link between SMBHB orbital evolution and low-frequency gravitational wave emission. We further emphasize the synergy between SKAO observations and modern and upcoming facilities such as the James Webb and Euclid space telescopes, Rubin Observatory, and gravitational wave detectors including the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and pulsar timing arrays. These combined capabilities will allow SKAO to enable the first comprehensive radio census of dual and binary SMBH systems, bridge the gap between electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations, and provide a statistically significant view of SMBH pairing, accretion, and merger-driven feedback throughout cosmic history.

Coefficient problems of Starlike Functions Related to a Balloon-Shaped Domain

Recent advances in image and signal processing have drawn on geometric function theory, particularly coefficient estimate problems. Motivated by their significance, we introduce a class of starlike functions related to a balloon-shaped domain \[ \mathcal{S}^*_{\mathcal{B}}= \left\{ f \in \mathcal{A} : \frac{z f'(z)}{f(z)} \prec \frac{1}{1-\log(1+z)} := B(z); \; z \in \mathbb{D} \right\}, \] where $B(z)$ maps the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ onto a balloon-shaped domain. This work establishes bounds for the second order Hankel determinants and second order Toeplitz determinants involving the initial coefficients, the logarithmic coefficients and the logarithmic coefficients of the inverse function for $f \in \mathcal{S}^*_{\mathcal{B}}$

The EDGE-CALIFA Survey: An integral field unit-based integrated molecular gas database for galaxy evolution studies in the Local Universe

Studying galaxy evolution requires knowledge not only of the stellar properties, but also of the interstellar medium (in particular the molecular phase) out of which stars form, using a statistically significant and unbiased sample of galaxies. To this end, we introduce here the integrated Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (iEDGE), a collection of integrated stellar and nebular emission lines, and molecular gas properties from 643 galaxies in the local Universe. These galaxies are drawn from the CALIFA datasets, and are followed up in CO lines by the APEX, CARMA, and ACA telescopes. As this database is assembled from data coming from a heterogeneous set of telescopes (including IFU optical data and single-dish and interferometric CO data), we adopted a series of techniques (tapering, spatial and spectral smoothing, and aperture correction) to homogenise the data. Due to the application of these techniques, the database contains measurements from the inner regions of the galaxies and for the full galaxy extent. We used the database to study the fundamental star formation relationships between star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass ($M_*$), and molecular gas mass ($M_{\rm mol}$) across galaxies with different morphologies. We observed that the diagrams defined by these quantities are bi-modal, with early-type passive objects well separated from spiral star-forming galaxies. Additionally, while the molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm mol}=M_{\rm mol}/M_*$) decreases homogeneously across these two types of galaxies, the star formation efficiency (SFE=SFR/$M_{\rm mol}$) in the inner regions of passive galaxies is almost two orders of magnitude lower compared to the global values. This indicates that inside-out quenching requires not only low $f_{\rm mol}$, but also strongly reduced SFE in the galactic centres.

The EDGE-CALIFA survey: Star formation relationships for galaxies at different stages of their evolution

Galaxy evolution is largely driven by star formation activity or by the cessation of it, also called star formation quenching. In this paper, we present star formation scaling relations for galaxies at different evolutionary stages. To do so, we used the integrated Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (iEDGE), which collects CO, optical continuum, and emission line information for 643 galaxies from the CALIFA IFU dataset. By considering the patterns described by star-forming and retired regions, we grouped the galaxies into quenching stages using the emission line classification scheme, QueStNA. We observed that the molecular gas mass ($M_{\rm mol}$) decreases from star-forming to retired systems and so does the molecular-to-stellar mass ratio ($f_{\rm mol}$). In contrast, star formation efficiency (SFE) is constant in the quenching stages dominated by star formation and rapidly declines afterwards. We observed that this rapid decline is more pronounced in the centre of the galaxies compared to the rest of the discs, reflecting the inside-out quenching displayed by nearby galaxies. We noticed that the relations between $M_{\rm mol}$ and the stellar mass ($M_*$) become increasingly shallow with the quenching stages; however, the relations between the star formation rate (SFR) and $M_{\rm mol}$ steepen when going from star-forming to retired systems. We observed that a three-dimensional relation between SFR, $M_*$, and $M_{\rm mol}$ exists for star-forming galaxies, while data points from other quenching groups are scattered across the parameter space. Taken together, these pieces of evidence indicate that the quenching of the galaxies cannot be explained solely by a depletion of the molecular gas and that a significant decrease in the SFE is necessary to retire the centre of the galaxies beyond the star formation green valley.

Demonstration of Event Position Reconstruction based on Diffusion in the NEXT-White Detector

Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $^{83\mathrm{m}}$Kr calibration electron captures ($E\sim45$keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to $2~$cm precision with bias $< 1$mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E$\geq$1.5MeV), yielding a precision of 3cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q$_{ββ}$ in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation.

Noether Theorem and Nilpotency Property of the (Anti-)BRST Charges in the BRST Formalism: A Brief Review

In some of the physically interesting gauge systems, we show that the application of the Noether theorem does not lead to the deduction of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST charges that obey precisely the off-shell nilpotency property despite the fact that these charges are $(i)$ derived by using the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, $(ii)$ the generators of the above continuous symmetry transformations, and $(iii)$ conserved w.r.t. the time-evolution due to the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion derived from the Lagrangians/Lagrangian densities (that describe the dynamics of the suitably chosen physical systems). We propose a systematic method for the derivation of the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges from the corresponding {non-nilpotent Noether conserved (anti-)BRST charges. To corroborate the sanctity and preciseness of our proposal, we take into account the examples of $(i)$ the one ($0 + 1$)-dimensional (1D) system of a massive spinning (i.e. SUSY) relativistic particle, $(ii)$ the D-dimensional non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory, and $(iii)$ the Abelian 2-form and the St${\ddot u}$ckelberg-modified version of the massive Abelian 3-form gauge theories in any arbitrary D-dimension of spacetime. Our present endeavor is a brief review where some decisive proposals have been made and a few novel results have been obtained as far as the nilpotency property is concerned.

1D Diffeomorphism Invariant Model of a Free Scalar Relativistic Particle: Supervariable and BRST Approaches

We apply the supervariable approach to derive the proper quantum Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries for the 1D diffeomorphism invariant model of a free scalar relativistic particle by exploiting the infinitesimal classical reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) symmetry of this theory. We derive the conserved and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges and prove their absolute anticommutativity property by using the virtues of Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction of our present theory. We establish the sanctity of the existence of CF-type restriction (i) by considering the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations of the coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians, and (ii) by proving the symmetry invariance of the Lagrangians within the framework of supervariable approach. We capture the nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity of the conserved (anti-)BRST charges within the framework of (anti-)chiral supervariable approach (ACSA) to BRST formalism. One of the novel observations of our present endeavor is the derivation of CF-type restriction by using the modified Bonora-Tonin (BT) supervariable approach (while deriving the (anti-)BRST symmetries for the target spacetime and/or momenta variables) and by symmetry considerations of the Lagrangians of the theory. The rest of the (anti-)BRST symmetries, for the other variables, are derived by using the newly proposed ACSA. We also demonstrate the existence of CF-type restriction in the proof of absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST charges.

Superfield Approaches to a Model of Bosonic String: Curci-Ferrari Type Restrictions

Exploiting the theoretical potential of the modified Bonora-Tonin superfield approach (MBTSA) as well as the (anti-)chiral superfield approach (ACSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the classical two $(1 + 1)$-dimensional (2D) diffeomorphism symmetry transformations on the world-sheet (that is traced out by the motion of a model of bosonic string). Only the BRST symmetry transformations for this model have been discussed in the earlier literature. We derive the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions (using MBTSA) which turn out to be the root-cause behind the absolute anticommutativity of the above (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations. We capture the symmetry invariance of the (anti-)BRST invariant Lagrangian densities within the ambit of ACSA. The derivation of the proper anti-BRST transformations (corresponding to the already known BRST transformations) and the (anti-)BRST invariant CF-type restrictions are the novel results in our present endeavor.

Massive 4D Abelian 2-Form Theory: Nilpotent Symmetries from the (Anti-)Chiral Superfield Approach

We derive the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations by exploiting the (anti-)chiral superfield approach (ACSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for the four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg-modified massive Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We perform exactly similar kind of exercise for the derivation of the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations, too. In the above derivations, the symmetry invariant restrictions on the superfields play very important and decisive roles. To prove the sanctity of the above nilpotent symmetries, we generalize our 4D ordinary theory (defined on the 4D flat Minkowskian spacetime manifold) to its counterparts (4,1)-dimensional (anti-)chiral super sub-manifolds of the (4,2)-dimensional supermanifold which is parameterized by the superspace coordinates $Z^{M} = (x^μ,θ, \barθ ) $ where $x^μ( μ= 0,1,2,3 )$ are the bosonic coordinates and a pair of Grassmannian variables $(θ, \barθ)$ are fermionic: ($θ^{2} = \bar{θ^{2}} = 0, \,\,θ\,\barθ +\barθ\,θ= 0$) in nature. One of the novel observations of our present endeavor is the derivation of the Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions from the requirement of the symmetry invariance of the coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangian densities for our theory within the framework of ACSA to BRST formalism. We also exploit the standard techniques of ACSA to capture the off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity of the conserved (anti-)BRST as well as the (anti-)co-BRST charges. In a subtle manner, the proof of the absolute anticommutativity of the above conserved charges also implies the existence of the appropriate CF-type restrictions on our theory.

Reparameterization Invariant Model of a Supersymmetric System: BRST and Supervariable Approaches

We carry out the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) quantization of the one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) model of a free massive spinning relativistic particle (i.e. a supersymmetric system) by exploiting its classical infinitesimal and continuous reparameterization symmetry transformations. We use the modified Bonora-Tonin (BT) supervariable approach (MBTSA) to BRST formalism to obtain the nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations of the target space variables and the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction for the 1D model of our supersymmetric (SUSY) system. The nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for other variables of our model are derived by using the (anti-)chiral supervariable approach (ACSA) to BRST formalism. Within the framework of the latter, we have shown the existence of the CF-type restriction by proving the (i) symmetry invariance of the coupled Lagrangians, and (ii) the absolute anticommutativity property of the conserved (anti-)BRST charges. The application of the MBTSA to a physical SUSY system (i.e. a 1D model of a massive spinning particle) is a novel result in our present endeavor. In the application of ACSA, we have considered only the (anti-)chiral super expansions of the supervariables. Hence, the observation of the absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST charges is a novel result. The CF-type restriction is universal in nature as it turns out to be the same for the SUSY and non-SUSY reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) invariant models of the (non-)relativistic particles.

Supervariable and BRST Approaches to a Reparameterization Invariant Non-Relativistic System

We exploit the theoretical strength of the supervariable and Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalisms to derive the proper (i.e. off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting) (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the reparameterization invariant model of a non-relativistic (NR) free particle whose space $(x)$ and time $(t)$ variables are function of an evolution parameter $(τ)$. The infinitesimal reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) symmetry transformation of our theory is defined w.r.t. this evolution parameter $(τ)$. We apply the modified Bonora-Tonin (BT) supervariable approach (MBTSA) as well as the (anti-)chiral supervariable approach (ACSA) to BRST formalism to discuss various aspects of our present system. For this purpose, our 1D ordinary theory (parameterized by $τ$) is generalized onto a $(1, 2)$-dimensional supermanifold which is characterized by the superspace coordinates $Z^M = (τ, θ, \barθ)$ where a pair of Grassmannian variables satisfy the fermionic relationships: $θ^2 = {\barθ}^2 = 0, \, θ\,\barθ+ \barθ\,θ= 0$ and $τ$ is the bosonic evolution parameter. In the context of ACSA, we take into account only the (1, 1)-dimensional (anti-)chiral super sub-manifolds of the general (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. The derivation of the universal Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction, from various underlying theoretical methods, is a novel observation in our present endeavor. Furthermore, we note that the form of the gauge-fixing and Faddeev-Popov ghost terms for our NR and non-SUSY system is exactly same as that of the reparameterization invariant SUSY (i.e. spinning) and non-SUSY (i.e. scalar) relativistic particles. This is a novel observation, too.

Interacting 2D Field-Theoretic Model for Hodge Theory

We take up the St${\ddot u}$ckelberg-modified version of the two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) Proca theory, in interaction with the Dirac fields, to study its various continuous and discrete symmetry transformations and show that this specific interacting 2D field-theoretic model provides a tractable example for the Hodge theory because its symmetries (and corresponding conserved charges) provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry at the algebraic level. The physical state of this theory is chosen to be the harmonic state (of the Hodge decomposed state) in the quantum Hilbert space which is annihilated by the conserved and nilpotent (anti-)BRST as well as (anti-)co-BRST charges. A physical consequence of this study is an observation that the 2D anomaly, at the quantum level, does not lead to any problem as far as the consistency and unitarity of our present 2D theory is concerned. In other words, our present 2D field-theoretic model is amenable to particle interpretation despite the presence of the local chiral symmetry (which is associated with the nilpotent (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations) besides the presence of the nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetries (which are connected with the local gauge symmetry). The physicality condition with the (anti-)co-BRST charges implies that the 2D anomaly term is trivial in our present theory. Hence, our 2D theory is consistent, unitary and amenable to particle interpretation.

Calibration of the Surface Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to study cosmic rays of the highest energies ($>10^{19}$ eV). The ground array of the Observatory will consist of 1600 water Cherenkov detectors deployed over 3000 km^2. The remoteness and large number of detectors require a robust, automatic self-calibration procedure. It relies on the measurement of the average charge collected by a photomultiplier tube from the Cherenkov light produced by a vertical and central through-going muon determined to 5 - 10% at the detector via a novel rate-based technique and to 3% precision through analysis of histograms of the charge distribution. The parameters needed for the calibration are measured every minute, allowing for an accurate determination of the signals recorded from extensive air showers produced by primary cosmic rays. The method also enables stable and uniform triggering conditions to be achieved.

Massive Spinning Relativistic Particle: Revisited Under BRST and Supervariable Approaches

We discuss the continuous and infinitesimal gauge, supergauge, reparameterization, nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries and derive corresponding nilpotent charges for the one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) massive model of a spinning relativistic particle. We exploit the theoretical potential and power of the BRST and supervariable approaches to derive the (anti-)BRST symmetries and coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for this system. In particular, we capture the off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutatvity of the conserved (anti-)BRST charges within the framework of the newly proposed (anti-)chiral supervariable approach (ACSA) to BRST formalism where only the (anti-)chiral supervariables (and their suitable super expansions are taken into account along the Grassmannian direction(s)). One of the novel observations of our present investigation is the derivation of the Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction by the requirement of the absolute anticommutatvity of the (anti-)BRST charges in the ordinary space. We obtain the same restriction within the framework of ACSA to BRST formalism by (i) the symmetry invariance of the coupled Lagrangians, and (ii) the proof of the absolute anticommutatvity of the conserved and nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges. The observation of the anticommutativity property of the (anti-)BRST charges is a novel result in view of the fact that we have taken into account only the (anti-)chiral super expansions.

Modified 2D Proca Theory: Revisited Under BRST and (Anti-)Chiral Superfield Formalisms

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) approach, we discuss mainly the fermionic (i.e. off-shell nilpotent) (anti-)BRST, (anti-)co-BRST and some discrete dual-symmetries of the appropriate Lagrangian densities for a two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) modified Proca (i.e. a massive Abelian 1-form) theory without any interaction with matter fields. One of the novel observations of our present investigation is the existence of some kinds of restrictions in the case of our present Stückelberg-modified version of the 2D Proca theory which is not like the standard Curci-Ferrari (CF)-condition of a non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. Some kinds of similarities and a few differences between them have been pointed out in our present investigation. To establish the sanctity of the above off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetries, we derive them by using our newly proposed (anti-)chiral superfield formalism where a few specific and appropriate sets of invariant quantities play a decisive role. We express the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST conserved charges in terms of the superfields that are obtained after the applications of (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions and prove their off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity properties, too. Finally, we make some comments on (i) the novelty of our restrictions/obstructions, and (ii) the physics behind the negative kinetic term associated with the pseudo-scalar field of our present theory.

Tetraphenyl Butadiene Emanation and Bulk Fluorescence from Wavelength Shifting Coatings in Liquid Argon

We study the stability of three types of popularly employed TPB coatings under immersion in liquid argon. TPB emanation from each coating is quantified by fluorescence assay of molecular sieve filter material after a prolonged soak time. Two of the coatings are shown to emanate a detectable concentration of TPB into argon over a 24 hour period, which corresponds to tens of parts per billion in argon by mass. In an independent setup, the dissolved or suspended TPB is shown to produce a wavelength shifting effect in the argon bulk. Interpretations of these results and implications for present and future liquid argon time projection chamber experiments are discussed.

Chrono CDI: Coherent diffractive imaging of time-evolving samples

Bragg coherent x-ray diffractive imaging is a powerful technique for investigating dynamic nanoscale processes in nanoparticles immersed in reactive, realistic environments. Its temporal resolution is limited, however, by the oversampling requirements of 3D phase retrieval. Here we show that incorporating the entire measurement time series, which is typically a continuous physical process, into phase retrieval allows the oversampling requirement at each time step to be reduced leading to a subsequent improvement in the temporal resolution by a factor of 2 to 20 times. The increased time resolution will allow imaging of faster dynamics and of radiation dose sensitive samples. This approach, which we call "chrono CDI", may find use in improving time resolution in other imaging techniques.

Effect of dilution of both A- and B- sites on the multiferroic properties of spinal Mott insulators

The structural, magnetic, electrical and transport properties of FeV2O4, by doping Li and Cr ions respectively in A and B sites, have been studied. Dilution of A-site by Li doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature and decreases the ferroelectric transition temperature. This also decreases the V-V distances which in effect increases the A-V coupling. This increased A-V coupling dominates over the decrease in A-V coupling due to doping of non-magnetic Li. On the other hand, Cr doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature but does not alter the ferroelectric transition temperature which is due to the fact that the polarization origin to the presence of almost non-substituted regions.
