Inflessence: a phenomenological model for inflationary quintessence

We present a phenomenologically motivated model which is able to give rise both to an inflationary epoch and to the present day cosmic acceleration. We introduce an approach where the energy density depends on the scale factor $a$ in such a way that a smooth transition from the inflation to the matter dominated era and then to the nowadays accelerated expansion is achieved. We use the dimensionless coordinate distance $y(z)$ to the Gold Type Ia Supernovae dataset and to a sample comprising 20 radio galaxies, the shift parameter ${\cal{R}}$ and the acoustic peak parameter ${\cal{A}}$ to test whether the model is in agreement with observations and to constrain its main parameters. As an independent cross check, we also compare model predictions with the lookback time to galaxy clusters and the age of the universe. Although phenomenologically inspired, the model may be theoretically motivated either resorting to a scenario with a scalar and phantom fields (eventually interacting) or as an effective description arising from higher order gravity theories.

Constraining Van der Waals quintessence by observations

We discuss an alternative approach to quintessence modifying the usual equation of state of the cosmological fluid in order to see if going further than the approximation of perfect fluid allows to better reproduce the available data. We consider a cosmological model comprising only two fluids, namely baryons (modelled as dust) and dark matter with a Van der Waals equation of state. First, the general features of the model are presented and then the evolution of the energy density, the Hubble parameter and the scale factor are determined showing that it is possible to obtain accelerated expansion choosing suitably the model parameters. We use the estimated age of the universe and the data on the dimensionless coordinate distances to Type Ia supernovae and distant radio galaxies to see whether Van der Waals quintessence is viable to explain dark energy and to constrain its parameters.

Reconciling dark energy models with f(R) theories

Higher order theories of gravity have recently attracted a lot of interest as alternative candidates to explain the observed cosmic acceleration without the need of introducing any scalar field. A critical ingredient is the choice of the function f(R) of the Ricci scalar curvature entering the gravity Lagrangian and determining the dynamics of the universe. We describe an efficient procedure to reconstruct f(R) from the Hubble parameter $H$ depending on the redshift z. Using the metric formulation of f(R) theories, we derive a third order linear differential equation for f(R(z)) which can be numerically solved after setting the boundary conditions on the basis of physical considerations. Since H(z) can be reconstructed from the astrophysical data, the method we present makes it possible to determine, in principle, what is the f(R) theory which best reproduces the observed cosmological dynamics. Moreover, the method allows to reconcile dark energy models with f(R) theories finding out what is the expression of f(R) which leads to the same H(z) of the given quintessence model. As interesting examples, we consider "quiessence" (dark energy with constant equation of state) and the Chaplygin gas.

Higher Order Curvature Theories of Gravity Matched with Observations: a Bridge Between Dark Energy and Dark Matter Problems

Higher order curvature gravity has recently received a lot of attention due to the fact that it gives rise to cosmological models which seem capable of solving dark energy and quintessence issues without using "ad hoc" scalar fields. Such an approach is naturally related to fundamental theories of quantum gravity which predict higher order terms for loop expansions of quantum fields in curved spacetimes. In this framework, we obtain a class of cosmological solutions which are fitted against cosmological data. We reproduce reliable models able to fit high redshift supernovae and WMAP observations. The age of the universe and other cosmological parameters are recovered in this context. Furthermore, in the weak field limit, we obtain gravitational potentials which differ from the Newtonian one because of repulsive corrections increasing with distance. We evaluate the rotation curve of our Galaxy and compare it with the observed data in order to test the viability of these theories and to estimate the scale-length of the correction. It is remarkable that the Milky Way rotation curve is well fitted without the need of any dark matter halo and similar results hold also for other galaxies.

Can higher order curvature theories explain rotation curves of galaxies?

Higher order curvature gravity has recently received a lot of attention due to the fact that it gives rise to cosmological models which seem capable of solving dark energy and quintessence issues without using "ad hoc" scalar fields. In this letter, a gravitational potential is obtained which differs from the Newtonian one because of a repulsive correction increasing with distance. We evaluate the rotation curve of our Galaxy and compare it with the observed data in order both to test the viability of these theories and to estimate the scalelength of the correction. It is remarkable that the Milky Way rotation curve is well fitted without the need of any dark matter halo and a similar result tentatively holds also for other galaxies.

Unified dark energy models : a phenomenological approach

A phenomenological approach is proposed to the problem of universe accelerated expansion and of the dark energy nature. A general class of models is introduced whose energy density depends on the redshift $z$ in such a way that a smooth transition among the three main phases of the universe evolution (radiation era, matter domination, asymptotical de Sitter state) is naturally achieved. We use the estimated age of the universe, the Hubble diagram of Type Ia Supernovae and the angular size - redshift relation for compact and ultracompact radio structures to test whether the model is in agreement with astrophysical observation and to constrain its main parameters. Although phenomenologically motivated, the model may be straightforwardly interpreted as a two fluids scenario in which the quintessence is generated by a suitably chosen scalar field potential. On the other hand, the same model may also be read in the context of unified dark energy models or in the framework of modified Friedmann equation theories.

Cosmological consequences of an inhomogeneous space-time

Astrophysical observations provide a picture of the universe as a 4-dim homogeneous and isotropic flat space-time dominated by an unknown form of dark energy. To achieve such a cosmology one has to consider in the early universe an inflationary era able to overcome problems of standard cosmological models. Here an inhomogeneous model is proposed which allows to obtain a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker behaviour far away from the inhomogeneities and it naturally describes structures formation. We also obtain that the cosmological term does not prevent structure formation, avoiding a fine tuning problem in initial conditions. The asymptotic exact solution have been calculated. A simple test with universe age prediction has been performed. A relation between the inhomogeneity, the breaking of time reversal, parity and the matter-antimatter asymmetry is briefly discussed.

Curvature quintessence matched with observational data

Quintessence issues can be achieved by taking into account higher order curvature invariants into the effective action of gravitational field. Such an approach is naturally related to fundamental theories of quantum gravity which predict higher order terms in loop expansion of quantum fields in curved space-times. In this framework, we obtain a class of cosmological solutions which are fitted against cosmological data. We reproduce encouraging results able to fit high redshift supernovae and WMAP observations. The age of the universe and other cosmological parameters are discussed in this context.

Quintessence without scalar fields

The issues of quintessence and cosmic acceleration can be discussed in the framework of theories which do not include necessarily scalar fields. It is possible to define pressure and energy density for new components considering effective theories derived from fundamental physics like the extended theories of gravity or simply generalizing the state equation of matter. Exact accelerated expanding solutions can be achieved in several schemes: either in models containing higher order curvature and torsion terms or in models where the state equation of matter is corrected by a second order Van der Waals terms. In this review, we present such new approaches and compare them with observations.

Matching torsion Lambda - term with observations

Taking into account a torsion field gives rise to a negative pressure contribution in cosmological dynamics and then to an accelerated behaviour of Hubble fluid. The presence of torsion has the same effect of a Lambda - term. We obtain a general exact solution which well fits the data coming from high - redshift supernovae and Sunyaev - Zeldovich/X - ray method for the determination of the cosmological parameters. On the other hand, it is possible to obtain observational constraints on the amount of torsion density. A dust dominated Friedmann behaviour is recovered as soon as torsion effects are not relevant.

Curvature and Torsion Quintessence

The issues of quintessence and cosmic acceleration can be discussed in the framework of higher order curvature and torsion theories of gravity. We can define effective pressure and energy density directly connected to the curvature or to the torsion fields and then ask for the conditions to get an accelerated expansion. Exact accelerated expanding solutions can be achieved for several fourth order curvature or torsion theories so that we obtain an alternative scheme to the standard quintessence scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity, usually adopted. We discuss also conformal transformations in order to see the links of quintessence between the Jordan and Einstein frames. Furthermore, we take into account a torsion fluid whose effects become relevant at large scale. Specifically, we investigate a model where a totally antisymmetric torsion field is taken into account discussing the conditions to obtain quintessence. We obtain exact solutions also in this case where dust dominated Friedmann behavior is recovered as soon as torsion effects are not relevant.
