Inverse magnetocaloric effect in synthetic antiferromagnets

The magnetocaloric effect in exchange-coupled synthetic-antiferromagnet multilayers is investigated experimentally and theoretically. We observe a temperature-controlled inversion of the effect, where the entropy increases on switching the individual ferromagnetic layers from anti-parallel to parallel alignment near their Curie point. Using a microscopic analytical model as well as numerical atomistic-spin simulations of the system, we explain the observed effect as due to the interplay between the intra- and inter-layer exchange interactions, which either add up or counteract to effectively modulate the Curie temperature of the dilute ferromagnetic layers. The proposed method of designing tunable, strongly magneto-caloric materials should be of interest for such applications as heat-assisted spintronics and magnetic refrigeration.

Magneto-optical properties of topological insulator thin films with broken inversion symmetry

We determine the optical response of ultrathin film topological insulators in the presence of a quantizing external magnetic field taking into account both hybridization between surface states, broken inversion symmetry and explicit time reversal symmetry breaking by the magnetic field. We find that breaking of inversion symmetry in the system, which can be due to interaction with a substrate or electrical gating, results in Landau level crossings which lead to additional optical transition channels that were previously forbidden. We show that by tuning the hybridization and symmetry breaking parameters, a transition from the normal to a topological insulator phase occurs with measurable signatures in both the longitudinal and optical Hall conductivity.

Optical Conductivity of Topological Insulator Thin Films in a Quantizing Magnetic Field

We determine the optical response of topological insulator thin films in the presence of a quantizing, external magnetic field. We explicitly take into account hybridization between the states of top and bottom surface. The interplay between hybridization and Zeeman energies gives rise to topological and normal insulator phases and phase transitions between them. The optical response in the two phases and at the phase transition point is investigated. We show that the difference in magneto-optical response can be used to distinguish the topological phase from the normal phase of the system. Further, the optical response also allows us to determine the gap generated by hybridization between top and bottom surface states of topological insulator thin films.

Calorimetry of a harmonically trapped Bose gas

We experimentally study the energy-temperature relationship of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by transferring a known quantity of energy to the condensate and measuring the resulting temperature change. We consider two methods of heat transfer, the first using a free expansion under gravity and the second using an optical standing wave to diffract the atoms in the potential. We investigate the effect of interactions on the thermodynamics and compare our results to various finite temperature theories.

Quantum resonant effects in the delta-kicked rotor revisited

We review the theoretical model and experimental realization of the atom optics $δ-$kicked rotor (AOKR), a paradigm of classical and quantum chaos. We have performed a number of experiments with an all-optical Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a periodic standing wave potential in an AOKR system. We discuss results of the investigation of the phenomena of quantum resonances in the AOKR. An interesting feature of the momentum distribution of the atoms obtained as a result of short pulses of light, is the variance of the momentum distribution or the kinetic energy $ /2m$ in units of the recoil energy $E_{rec} = \hbar ω_{rec}$. The energy of the system is examined as a function of pulse period for a range of kicks that allow the observation of quantum resonances. In particular we study the behavior of these resonances for a large number of kicks. Higher order quantum resonant effects corresponding to the fractional Talbot time of (1/4)$T_{T}$ and (1/5)$T_{T}$ for five and ten kicks have been observed. Moreover, we describe the effect of the initial momentum of the atoms on quantum resonances in the AOKR.

Experimental observation of Loschmidt time reversal of a Quantum Chaotic System

We have performed an experiment to demonstrate the approximate time reversal of a "chaotic" time evolution of atomic deBroglie waves. We use ultra cold atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quantum $δ$-kicked rotor experiment, and show that an initial state can be approximately re-created even after a period of "chaotic" evolution (a number of kicks). As this mechanism only works for a very narrow range of momenta, the net effect is a narrowing of the momentum distribution after the kick sequence.

The initial momentum dependence of the quantum resonance in the delta-kicked rotor

The influence of an initial momentum on the appearance of "quantum resonances" in the delta-kicked rotor system is explored experimentally. We show that for certain initial momenta, a resonance can be negated entirely, whereas at others a resonance can be made to appear. At a larger number of kicks, all resonances are shown to narrow. We show that as a consequence, the individual "diffraction peaks" may split. We compare our results to numerical simulations as well as analytical theory.
