Non-resonant adiabatic photon trap

The paper presents and experimentally investigates a concept of an efficient radiation trap based on adiabatic photon confinement between curved mirrors. Such a trap is free of restrictions typical to the Fabry-Perot cells, relating to the confined radiation quality and accuracy and stabilization of optical elements. Experiments have demonstrated high efficiency of confinement, which depends mainly on the reflectivity of the mirrors and defects on their surface.

Nonresonance adiabatic photon trap

Concept of high efficiency photon storage based on adiabatic confinement between concave mirrors is presented and experimentally investigated. The approach is insensitive to typical for Fabri-Perot cells requirements on quality of accumulated radiation, tolerance of resonator elements and their stability. Experiments have been carried out with the trap, which consists from opposed concave cylindrical mirrors and conjugated with them spherical mirrors. In result, high efficiency for accumulation of radiation with large angular spread and spectrum width has been confirmed. As radiation source a commercial fiber laser has been used.

Nonresonance adiabatic photon confinement in spherical mirror system. Experimental study

New nonresonance approach of photon accumulation in two spherical mirrors has been experimentally demonstrated. In this work, we have received a high accumulation coefficient and shown good effectiveness of this technique for creating photo neutralizer of negative ion beams. This efficiency in such concept is generally determined by reflectance mirrors and is practically not dependent of input emission quality and does not require high precision adjusting the optical elements.

Photon trap for neutralization of negative ion beams

For effectively neutralization of the powerful negative ions beams of hydrogen and deuterium the photon target is considered in long time. The attractiveness of the traditional approach (Fabry-Perot resonators) to their creation is limited to a number of stringent technical requirements and large economic costs. In this paper we propose a new concept of non-resonant photon trap (storage) for creation more technologically simple optical neutralizers.

Erosion of Copper Target Irradiated by Ion Beam

Erosion of copper target irradiated by deuterium ion beam with ultimate fluence is studied. The target originally destined for neutron generation represents bulk copper substrate covered by 3-\mum titanium layer. The target was irradiated by deuterium ion beam generated in Bayard-Alpert type ion source with energy of ions 17.5 keV/nuclear. Maximal fluence in the center of the target achieves 2.5x10^23atoms/cm^2. Measurements of the profile of irradiated target and estimation of fluence shows that physical sputtering is a dominating process that determines the target erosion Most interesting feature is growth of \mum-size tadpole-shaped structures, localized in the cracks of the surface. RFA analysis of these structures showed extremely large (up to 60%at.) carbon content.

Plasma Heating by an Electron Beam in Corrugated Magnetic Field

New experimental results from the multimirror trap GOL-3 are presented. Deuterium plasma of $~10^21 m^-3$ density is heated by a high power relativistic electron beam (peak parameters are ~1 MeV, ~25 kA, ~8 $μ$s, ~120 kJ). Magnetic system of the facility is a 12-meter-long axisymmetrical solenoid with corrugated magnetic field, which consists of 55 cells with $B_max/B_min$=4.8/3.2 T. Collective plasma heating by the electron beam results in peak electron temperature ~2 keV. To this time the ions are also collectively heated by gradients of electron pressure in the cells of the trap. Ion temperature increases above 1 keV and confines at the high level for ~1 ms. Dense hot plasma in GOL-3 trap emits D-D neutrons for ~1 ms. Details of collective plasma heating by the beam in the corrugated magnetic field will be presented in the paper. New physical mechanism of effective heating of plasma ions, substantially dependent on the corrugation of the magnetic field, is discussed. Experiments with complete multimirror configuration of the GOL-3 facility have shown the significant improvement of energy confinement time comparing with simple solenoidal configuration. Axial currents, which exist in the system, cause sheared helical structure of the magnetic field. The safety factor q is shown to be below unity on the axis.
