Gap Symmetry in KFe_2As_2 and cos 4θgap component in LiFeAs

We revisit the issue of the gap symmetry in KFe2As2, which is an Fe-pnictide superconductor with only hole pockets. Previous theoretical studies mostly argued for a d-wave gap in KFe2As2 since transport and thermodynamic measurements point to the presence of the gap nodes. However, a d-wave gap is inconsistent with recent laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We propose the scenario for a nodal s-wave superconductivity induced by a non-magnetic intra-band and inter-band interactions between fermions near hole pockets. The superconducting gap changes sign between the hole pockets and has cos 4θangular dependence and accidental nodes on one or several hole pockets. We argue that strong angle dependence is the consequence of near-degeneracy between inter-pocket and intra-pocket interaction on the hole pockets. We also analyze cos 4θangular dependence of the gap in other Fe-pnictides and compare theoretical results with the photoemission experiments of LiFeAs.

Phase diagram of iron-pnictides if doping acts as a disorder

We obtain and analyze the phase diagram of doped iron-pnictides under the assumption that doping adds non-magnetic impurities to the system but does not change the densities of carriers. We show that the phase diagram is quite similar to the one obtained under the opposite rigid band assumption. In both cases, there is a phase where extended s+- superconductivity and antiferromagnetism co-exist. We evaluate the jump of the specific heat at the superconducting transition across the phase diagram and show that the jump is non-monotonic, with the maximum at the onset of the co-existence phase. Our results are in quantitative agreement with experiments on some iron-pnictides.

Effects of longer-range interactions on unconventional superconductivity

We analyze the effect of the non-vanishing range of electron-electron repulsion on the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. We present asymptotically exact weak-coupling results for dilute electrons in the continuum and for the 2D extended Hubbard model, as well as density-matrix renormalization group results for the two-leg extended Hubbard model at intermediate couplings, and approximate results for the case of realistically screened Coulomb interactions. We show that $T_c$ is generally suppressed in some pairing channels as longer range interactions increase in strength, but superconductivity is not destroyed. Our results confirm that electron-electron interaction can lead to unconventional superconductivity under physically realistic circumstances.

Pairing mechanism in Fe-based superconductors

I review recent works on the symmetry and the structure of the superconducting gap in Fe-based superconductors and on the underlying pairing mechanism in these systems. The experimental data on superconductivity show very rich behavior, with potentially different symmetry of a superconducting state for different compositions of the same material. The variety of different pairing states raised the issue whether the physics of Fe-based superconductors is model-dependent or is universal, governed by a single underlying pairing mechanism. I argue that the physics is universal and that all pairing states obtained so far can be understood within the same universal pairing scenario and are well described by the effective low-energy model with a small number of input parameters.

Evolution of symmetry and structure of the gap in Fe-based superconductors with doping and interactions

We present a detailed study of the symmetry and structure of the pairing gap in Fe-based superconductors (FeSC). We treat FeSC as quasi-2D, decompose the pairing interaction in the XY plane in s-wave and d-wave channels into contributions from scattering between different Fermi surfaces and analyze how each scattering evolves with doping and input parameters. We verify that each interaction is well approximated by the lowest angular harmonics. We use this simplification to analyze the interplay between the interaction with and without spin-fluctuation components, the origin of the attraction in the s+/-and d_{x2-y2} channels, the competition between them, the angular dependence of the s+/- gaps along the electron Fermi surface, the conditions under which s+/- gap develops nodes, and the origin of superconductivity in heavily electron- or hole-doped systems, when only Fermi surfaces of one type are present. We also discuss the relation between RPA and RG approaches for FeSC.

Effect of nodes, ellipticity and impurities on the spin resonance in Iron-based superconductors

We analyze doping dependence of the spin resonance of an s+- superconductor and its sensitivity to the ellipticity of electron pockets, to magnetic and non-magnetic impurities, and to the angle dependence of the superconducting gap along electron Fermi surfaces. We show that the maximum intensity of the resonance shifts from commensurate to incommensurate momentum above some critical doping which decreases with increasing ellipticity. Angle dependence of the gap and particularly the presence of accidental nodes lowers the overall intensity of the resonance peak and shifts its position towards the onset of the particle-hole continuum. Still, however, the resonance remains a true δ-function in the clean limit. When non-magnetic or magnetic impurities are present, the resonance broadens and its position shifts. The shift depends on the type of impurities and on the ratio of intraband and interband scattering components. The ratio Omega_{res}/T_c increases almost linearly with the strength of the interband impurity scattering, in agreement with the experimental data. We also compare spin response of s+- and s++ superconductors. We show that there is no resonance for s++ gap, even when there is a finite mismatch between electron and hole Fermi surfaces shifted by the antiferromagnetic momentum.

Effect of Fermi Surface Nesting on Resonant Spin Excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the resonant spin excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 over a broad range of electron band filling. The fall in the superconducting transi- tion temperature with hole doping coincides with the magnetic excitations splitting into two incom- mensurate peaks because of the growing mismatch in the hole and electron Fermi surface volumes, as confirmed by a tight-binding model with s+- symmetry pairing. The reduction in Fermi surface nesting is accompanied by a collapse of the resonance binding energy and its spectral weight caused by the weakening of electron-electron correlations.

Specific heat jump at superconducting transition in the presence of Spin-Density-Wave in iron-pnictides

We analyze the magnitude of the specific heat jump ΔC at the superconducting transition temperature T_c in the situation when superconductivity develops in the pre-existing antiferromagnetic phase. We show that ΔC/T_c differs from the BCS value and is peaked at the tri-critical point where this coexistence phase first emerges. Deeper in the magnetic phase, the onset of coexistence, T_c, drops and ΔC/T_c decreases, roughly as ΔC/T_c \propto T^2_c at intermediate T_c and exponentially at the lowest T_c, in agreement with the observed behavior of ΔC/T_c in iron-based superconductors.

Manifesto for a higher Tc -- lessons from pnictides and cuprates

We explore energy scales, features in the normal state transport, relevant interactions and constraints for the pairing mechanisms in the high-Tc cuprates and Fe-pnictides. Based on this analysis we attempt to identify a number of attributes of superconductors with a higher T_c. Expanded version of the article published in Nature Physics, 7, 271 (2011).

Evolution of superconductivity in Fe-based systems with doping

We study the symmetry and the structure of the gap in Fe-based superconductors by decomposing the pairing interaction obtained in the RPA into s- and d-wave components and into contributions from scattering between different Fermi surfaces. We show that each interaction is well approximated by the lowest angular harmonics and use this simplification to analyze the origin of the attraction in the two channels, the competition between s- and d-wave solutions, and the origin of superconductivity in heavily doped systems, when only electron or only hole pockets are present.

Angular resolved specific heat in iron-based superconductors: the case for nodeless extended $s$-wave gap

We consider the variation of the field-induced component of the specific heat $C({\bf H})$ with the direction of the applied field in $Fe-$pnictides within quasi-classical Doppler-shift approximation, with special emphasis to recent experiments on FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ [Zheng et al., arXiv:1004.2236]. We show that for extended $s-$wave gap with no nodes, $C({\bf H})$ has $\cos 4 ϕ$ component, where $ϕ$ is the angle between ${\bf H}$ and the direction between hole and electron Fermi surfaces. The maxima of $C({\bf H})$ are at $π/4$, $3π/4$, etc. if the applied field is smaller than $H_0 \leq 1T$, and at $ϕ=0, π/2$, etc. if the applied field is larger than $H_0$. The angle-dependence of $C({\bf H})$, the positions of the maxima, and the relative magnitude of the oscillating component are consistent with the experiments performed in the field of $9T >> H_0$. We show that the observed $\cos 4 ϕ$ variation does not hold if the $s-$wave gap has accidental nodes along the two electron Fermi surfaces.

Superconductivity and spin-density-waves in multi-band metals

We present a detailed description of two-band quasi-2D metals with s-wave superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic spin-density wave (SDW) correlations. We present a general approach and use it to investigate the influence of the difference between the shapes and the areas of the two Fermi surfaces on the phase diagram. In particular, we determine the conditions for the co-existence of SC and SDW orders at different temperatures and dopings. We argue that a conventional s-wave SC order co-exists with SDW order only at very low $T$ and in a very tiny range of parameters. An extended s-wave superconductivity, for which SC gap changes sign between the two bands, co-exists with antiferromagnetic SDW over a much wider range of parameters and temperatures, but even for this SC order the regions of SDW and SC can still be separated by a first order transition. We show that the co-existence range becomes larger if SDW order is incommensurate. We apply our results to iron-based pnictide materials, in some of which co-existence of SDW and SC orders has been detected.

Theory of itinerant magnetic excitations in the SDW phase of iron-based superconductors

We argue that salient experimental features of the magnetic excitations in the SDW phase of iron-based superconductors can be understood within an itinerant model. We identify a minimal itinerant model and use a multi-band RPA treatment of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Weakly-damped spin-waves are found near the ordering momentum and it is shown how they dissolve into the particle-hole continuum. We show that ellipticity of the electron bands accounts for the anisotropy of the spin waves along different crystallographic directions and the gap at the momentum conjugated to the ordering one. We argue that our theory agrees well with the neutron scattering data.

Coexistence between superconducting and spin density wave states in iron-based superconductors: Ginzburg-Landau analysis

We consider the interplay between superconducting (SC) and commensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) orders in iron-pnictides by analyzing a multiple order Ginzburg-Landau free energy. We are particularly interested in whether the doping-induced transition between the two states is first order, or the two pure phases are separated by an intermediate phase with coexisting SC and SDW orders. For perfect nesting, the two orders do not coexist, because SDW order, which comes first, gaps the full Fermi surface leaving no space for SC to develop. When nesting is not perfect due to either ellipticity of electron bands or doping-induced difference in chemical potentials for holes and electrons, SDW order still leaves modified Fermi surfaces for not too strong SDW magnetism and the SC order may develop. We show that the two orders coexist only when certain relations between ellipticity and doping are met. In particular, in a compensated metal, ellipticity alone is not sufficient for coexistence of the two orders.

Reduced effect of impurities on the universal pairing scale in the cuprates

We consider the effect of non-magnetic impurities on the onset temperature $T^*$ for the $d-$wave pairing in spin-fluctuation scenario for the cuprates. We analyze intermediate coupling regime when the magnetic correlation length $ξ/a >1$ and the dimensionless coupling $u$ is O(1). In the clean limit, $T^* \approx 0.02 v_f/a$ in this parameter range, and weakly depends on $ξ$ and $u$. We found numerically that this universal pairing scale is also quite robust with respect to impurities: the scattering rate $Γ_{cr}$ needed to bring $T^*$ down to zero is about 4 times larger than in weak coupling, in good quantitative agreement with experiments. We provide analytical reasoning for this result.

Coexistence of superconductivity and a spin density wave in pnictides: Gap symmetry and nodal lines

We investigate the effect of a spin-density wave (SDW) on $s_{\pm}$ superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors. We show that, contrary to the common wisdom, no nodes open at the new, reconnected Fermi surfaces when the hole and electron pockets fold down in the SDW state, despite the fact that the $s_{\pm}$ gap changes sign between the two pockets. Instead, the order parameter preserves its sign along the newly formed Fermi surfaces. The familiar experimental signatures of an $s_{\pm}$ symmetry are still preserved, although they appear in a mathematically different way. For a regular $s$ case ($s_{++})$ the nodes do appear in the SDW state. This distinction suggests a novel simple way to experimentally separate an $s_{\pm}$ state from a regular $s$ in the pnictides. We argue that recently published thermal conductivity data in the coexisting state are consistent with the $s_{\pm},$ but not the $s_{++}$ state.

Momentum dependence and nodes of the superconducting gap in iron-pnictides

We discuss the structure of the superconducting gap in iron pnictides. In the itinerant electron picture, gaps with or without nodes have the extended s-wave (s+) symmetry and emerge within the same pairing mechanism, determined by the interplay between intra-pocket repulsion and inter-band pair hopping. If the pair hopping is stronger, the system develops an s+ gap without nodes. In the opposite case the superconductivity is governed by of the momentum-dependent part of the pair-hopping, and an s+ gap shows nodes on electron Fermi surfaces. We argue that the gap without/with nodes emerges in systems with a stronger/weaker tendency towards a spin-density-wave order.

Superfluid density and penetration depth in Fe-pnictides

We consider the superfluid density $ρ_s (T)$ in a two-band superconductor with extended s-wave symmetry ($s^+$) in the presence of non-magnetic impurities and apply the results to Fe-pnictides. We show that the behavior of the superfluid density is essentially the same as in an ordinary s-wave superconductor with magnetic impurities. We show that, for moderate to strong inter-band impurity scattering, $ρ_s (T)$ behaves as a power-law $T^n$ with $n\approx 1.6\div2$ over a wide range of $T$. We argue that the power-law behavior is consistent with recent experiments on the penetration depth $λ(T)$ in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, but disagree quantitatively with the data on LaFePO.
