Dynamical Casimir Effect in cavity with N-level detector or N-1 two-level atoms

We study the photon generation from vacuum via the Dynamical Casimir Effect in a cavity containing a N-level detector in equally-spaced resonant ladder configuration or N-1 identical resonant two-level atoms. If the modulation frequency equals exactly twice the unperturbed cavity frequency, the photon growth goes on steadily for odd N, while for even N at most N-2 photons can be generated. This finding is corroborated by numerical calculations. In the limit $N\to\infty$ we obtain the harmonic oscillator model of the detector, which admits analytical results.

AMENDART in Markovian circuit QED

We study the cavity field's and atomic asymptotic mean excitation numbers due to anti-rotating term (AMENDART) in the circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (circuit QED) system, composed of a two-level atom and a single cavity field mode, subject to Markovian damping and dephasing mechanisms. We show that the AMENDART are above the thermal values, and their behavior is analyzed analytically and numerically for typical parameters in circuit QED implementations described by the Rabi Hamiltonian. We point out that "parasitic elements", such as other cavity modes or eventual off-resonant atoms, also contribute substantially to AMENDART.

Smooth quantum-classical transition in photon subtraction and addition processes

Recently Parigi et al. [Science 317, 1890 (2007)] implemented experimentally the photon subtraction and addition processes from/to a light field in a conditional way, when the required operations were produced successfully only upon the positive outcome of a separate measurement. It was verified that for a low intensity beam (quantum regime) the bosonic annihilation operator does indeed describe a single photon subtraction, while the creation operator describes a photon addition. Nonetheless, the exact formal expressions for these operations do not always reduce to these simple identifications, and in this connection here we deduce the general superoperators for multiple photons subtraction and addition processes and analyze the statistics of the resulting states for classical field states having an arbitrary intensity. We obtain closed analytical expressions and verify that for classical fields with high intensity (classical regime) the operators that describe photon subtraction and addition processes deviate significantly from simply annihilation and creation operators. Complementarily, we analyze in details such a smooth quantum-classical transition as function of beam intensity for both processes.

Photon generation through decoherence in cavity QED: analytical analysis

The Rabi Hamiltonian describes the interaction between a two-level atom and a single mode of the quantized electromagnetic field. When the system is subject to the Markovian atomic dephasing reservoir, the anti-rotating term leads to the photon generation from vacuum. In the presence of Markovian damping reservoirs, the asymptotic mean photon number is higher than the thermal photon number expected in the absence of the anti-rotating term. We obtain approximate analytical expressions in the asymptotic regime for the photon creation rate in the pure dephasing case and the mean photon number and the atomic population inversion in the general case. Our analytical results are valid in the small mean photon number limit and they were tested by numerical analyses.

Photon creation from vacuum and interactions engineering in nonstationary circuit QED

We study theoretically the nonstationary circuit QED system in which the artificial atom transition frequency, or the atom-cavity coupling, have a small periodic time modulation, prescribed externally. The system formed by the atom coupled to a single cavity mode is described by the Rabi Hamiltonian. We show that, in the dispersive regime, when the modulation periodicity is tuned to the `resonances', the system dynamics presents the dynamical Casimir effect, resonant Jaynes-Cummings or resonant Anti-Jaynes-Cummings behaviors, and it can be described by the corresponding effective Hamiltonians. In the resonant atom-cavity regime and under the resonant modulation, the dynamics is similar to the one occurring for a stationary two-level atom in a vibrating cavity, and an entangled state with two photons can be created from vacuum. Moreover, we consider the situation in which the atom-cavity coupling, the atomic frequency, or both have a small nonperiodic time modulation, and show that photons can be created from vacuum in the dispersive regime. Therefore, an analog of the dynamical Casimir effect can be simulated in circuit QED, and several photons, as well as entangled states, can be generated from vacuum due to the anti-rotating term in the Rabi Hamiltonian.

Photon generation from vacuum in non-stationary circuit QED

We study theoretically the non-stationary circuit QED system in which the artificial atom transition frequency has a small periodic modulation in time, prescribed externally. We show that, in the dispersive regime, when the modulation periodicity meets the `resonances', the dynamics may be described by the dynamical Casimir effect, Jaynes-Cummings or Anti-Jaynes-Cummings effective Hamiltonians. In the resonant atom-cavity regime, under the modulation `resonance' the dynamics resembles the behavior of the dynamical Casimir effect in a vibrating cavity containing a resonant two-level atom, and entangled states with two photons can be created from vacuum. Thus, an analog of the dynamical Casimir effect may be simulated in circuit QED, and several photons, as well as entangled states, can be generated from vacuum due to the anti-rotating term in the Rabi Hamiltonian.

Rabi model beyond the rotating wave approximation: generation of photons from vacuum through decoherence

We study numerically the dynamics of the Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the interaction of a single cavity mode and a two-level atom without the rotating wave approximation, subjected to damping and dephasing reservoirs included via usual Lindblad superoperators in the master equation. We show that the combination of the antirotating term and the atomic dephasing leads to linear asymptotic photons generation from vacuum. We reveal the origins of the phenomenon and estimate its importance in realistic situations.

How to check the one-count operator experimentally

We propose an experimental scheme to probe the form of one-count operation used in the theory of continuous photodetection in cavities. Two main steps are: 1) an absorption of a single photon by an atom passing through a high-Q cavity containing electromagnetic field in a thermal or coherent state, 2) a subsequent measurement of the photon statistics in the new field state arising after the photon absorption. Then comparing the probabilities of finding 0 and 1 photons in the initial and final states of the field, one can make conclusions on the form of the one-count operation. This method can be readily applied in the microwave cavity QED with present technology.

Continuous photodetection model: quantum jump engineering and hints for experimental verification

We examine some aspects of the continuous photodetection model for photocounting processes in cavities. First, we work out a microscopic model that describes the field-detector interaction and deduce a general expression for the Quantum Jump Superoperator (QJS), that shapes the detector's post-action on the field upon a detection. We show that in particular cases our model recovers the QJSs previously proposed ad hoc in the literature and point out that by adjusting the detector parameters one can engineer QJSs. Then we set up schemes for experimental verification of the model. By taking into account the ubiquitous non-idealities, we show that by measuring the lower photocounts moments and the mean waiting time one can check which QJS better describes the photocounting phenomenon.

Microscopic models of quantum jump super-operators

We discuss the quantum jump operation in an open system, and show that jump super-operators related to a system under measurement can be derived from the interaction of that system with a quantum measurement apparatus. We give two examples for the interaction of a monochromatic electromagnetic field in a cavity (the system) with 2-level atoms and with a harmonic oscillator (representing two different kinds of detectors). We show that derived quantum jump super-operators have `nonlinear' form which depends on assumptions made about the interaction between the system and the detector. A continuous transition to the standard Srinivas--Davies form of the quantum jump super-operatoris shown.

Engineering Quantum Jump Superoperators for Single Photon Detectors

We study the back-action of a single photon detector on the electromagnetic field upon a photodetection by considering a microscopic model in which the detector is constituted of a sensor and an amplification mechanism. Using the quantum trajectories approach we determine the Quantum Jump Superoperator (QJS) that describes the action of the detector on the field state immediately after the photocount. The resulting QJS consists of two parts: the bright counts term, representing the real photoabsorptions, and the dark counts term, representing the amplification of intrinsic excitations inside the detector. First we compare our results for the counting rates to experimental data, showing a good agreement. Then we point out that by modifying the field frequency one can engineer the form of QJS, obtaining the QJS's proposed previously in an ad hoc manner.

Inclusion of non-idealities in the continuous photodetection model

Some non-ideal effects as non-unit quantum efficiency, dark counts, dead time and cavity losses that occur in experiments are incorporated within the continuous photodetection model by using the analytical quantum trajectories approach. We show that in standard photocounting experiments the validity of the model can be verified, and the formal expression for the quantum jump superoperator can also be checked.

Quantum master equations from classical Lagrangians with two stochastic forces

We show how a large family of master equations, describing quantum Brownian motion of a harmonic oscillator with translationally invariant damping, can be derived within a phenomenological approach, based on the assumption that an environment can be simulated by two classical stochastic forces. This family is determined by three time-dependent correlation functions (besides the frequency and damping coefficients), and it includes as special cases the known master equations, whose dissipative part is bilinear with respect to the operators of coordinate and momentum.

Entanglement of resonantly coupled field modes in cavities with vibrating boundaries

We study time dependence of various measures of entanglement (covariance entanglement coefficient, purity entanglement coefficient, normalized distance coefficient, entropic coefficients) between resonantly coupled modes of the electromagnetic field in ideal cavities with oscillating boundaries. Two types of cavities are considered: a three-dimensional cavity possessing eigenfrequencies $ω_3=3ω_1$, whose wall oscillates at the frequency $ω_w=2ω_1$, and a one-dimensional (Fabry--Perot) cavity with an equidistant spectrum $ω_n= nω_1$, when the distance between perfect mirrors oscillates at the frequencies $ω_1$ and $2ω_1$. The behaviour of entanglement measures in these cases turns out to be completely different, although all three coefficients demonstrate qualitatively similar time dependences in each case (except for some specific situations, where the covariance entanglement coefficient, based on traces of covariance submatrices, seems to be essentially more sensitive to entanglement than other measures, which are based on determinants of covariance submatrices). Different initial states of the field are considered: vacuum, squeezed vacuum, thermal, Fock, and even/odd coherent states.

Nonstationary Casimir effect in cavities with two resonantly coupled modes

We study the peculiarities of the nonstationary Casimir effect (creation of photons in cavities with moving boundaries) in the special case of two resonantly coupled modes with frequencies $ω_0$ and $(3Δ)ω_0$, parametrically excited due to small amplitude oscillations of the ideal cavity wall at the frequency $2ω_0(1δ)$ (with $|δ|,|Δ|\ll 1$). The effects of thermally induced oscillations in time dependences of the mean numbers of created photons and the exchange of quantum purities between the modes are discovered. Squeezing and photon distributions in each modes are calculated for initial vacuum and thermal states. A possibility of compensation of detunings is shown.
