Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

The Large Hadron-Electron Collider at the HL-LHC

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

Structure of the nucleon at leading and subleading twist in the covariant parton model

The covariant parton model is generalized to describe quark correlators in a systematic way. Previous results are reproduced for the T-even leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), and for the first time all T-even twist-3 TMDs are evaluated in this model. We apply the approach to evaluate the fully unintegrated quark correlator which allows us to understand the model-specific relations between different TMDs. We verify the consistency of the approach, present numerical results and compare to available TMD parametrizations.

Probing the linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized proton with heavy-quark pair production

We consider the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ distributions and the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}σ_L/{\rm d}σ_T$ in heavy-quark pair electroproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized nucleons. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio are predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of the gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized nucleon. In particular, the maximum values of the azimuthal distributions vary from 0 to 1 depending on $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that future measurements of these quantities at the proposed EIC and LHeC colliders could clarify in details the proton spin decomposition puzzle.

Applications of the WW-type approximation to SIDIS

We explore the complete cross-section for the production of unpolarized hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering up to power-suppressed $\mathcal{O}(1/Q^2)$ terms in the Wandzura-Wilczek-type (WW-type) approximation, which consists in systematically assuming that $\bar{q}gq$-correlators are much smaller than $\bar{q}q$-correlators. Under the applicability of WW-type approximations, certain relations among transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) occur which are used to approximate SIDIS cross-section in terms of a smaller subset of TMDs and FFs. We discuss the applicability of the WW-type approximations on the basis of available data.

Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering in Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation

We present the complete cross-section for the production of unpolarized hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering up to power-suppressed ${\cal O}(1/Q^2)$ terms in the Wandzura--Wilczek-type approximation which consists in systematically assuming that $\bar{q}gq$--terms are much smaller than $\bar{q}q$--correlators. We compute all twist-2 and twist-3 structure functions and the corresponding asymmetries, and discuss the applicability of the Wandzura--Wilczek-type approximations on the basis of available data. We make predictions that can be tested by data from Jefferson Lab, COMPASS, HERMES, and the future Electron-Ion Collider. The results of this paper can be readily used for phenomenology and for event generators, and will help to improve our understanding of the TMD theory beyond leading twist.

How to measure the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton using the heavy-quark pair production

In recent papers [1,2], two new ways have been proposed to probe the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton: using the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$. In this talk, we discuss in details the sensitivity of the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $φ$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal distributions under consideration vary from 0 to 1 depending on the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair production in DIS processes are predicted to be large in wide kinematic ranges and sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons.

Nucleon and nuclear structure through dilepton production

Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. The merits and benefits of the dilepton production channel for nuclear structure studies are discussed within the context of the International Workshop on Nucleon and Nuclear Structure through Dilepton Production taking place at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT$^{\star}$) of Trento. Particularly, the double deeply virtual Compton scattering, the time-like Compton scattering, the deeply virtual meson production, and the Drell-Yan processes are reviewed and a strategy for high impact experimental measurements is proposed.

The ratio $R={\rm d}σ_L/{\rm d}σ_T$ in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction as a probe of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized proton

We study the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}σ_L/{\rm d}σ_T$ in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as a probe of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where ${\rm d}σ_T$ (${\rm d}σ_L$) is the differential cross section of the $γ^*N\rightarrow Q\bar{Q}X$ process initiated by a transverse (longitudinal) virtual photon. Note first that the maximal value for the quantity $R$ allowed by the photon-gluon fusion with unpolarized gluons is large, about 2. We calculate the contribution of the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton. Our analysis shows that the maximum value of the ratio $R$ depends strongly on the gluon polarization; it varies from 0 to $\frac{Q^2}{4m^2}$ depending on $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction is predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons. For this reason, future measurements of the longitudinal and transverse components of the charm and bottom production cross sections at the proposed EIC and LHeC colliders seem to be very promising for determination of the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton.

How to measure the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton using the heavy-quark pair leptoproduction

We study the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $φ$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. First, we determine the maximal values for the $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries allowed by the photon-gluon fusion with unpolarized gluons; these predictions are large, $(\sqrt{3}-1)/2$ and $1/3$, respectively. Then we calculate the contribution of the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton. Our analysis shows that the maximum values of the azimuthal distributions depend strongly on the gluon polarization; they vary from 0 to 1 depending on $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction are predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons. For this reason, future measurements of the azimuthal distributions in charm and bottom production at the proposed EIC and LHeC colliders seem to be very promising for determination of the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton.

QCD predictions for the azimuthal asymmetry in charm leptoproduction for the COMPASS kinematics

We present the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos 2φ$ asymmetry in charm leptoproduction for the kinematics of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The asymmetry is predicted to be large, about 15%. The radiative corrections to the QCD predictions for the $\cos 2φ$ distribution are estimated to be small, less than 10%. Our calculations show that the azimuthal asymmetry in charm production is well defined in pQCD: it is stable both perturbatively and parametrically, and practically insensitive to theoretical uncertainties in the input parameters. We analyze the nonperturbative contributions to the $\cos 2φ$ distribution due to the gluon transverse motion in the target and the $c$-quark fragmentation. Because of the $c$-quark low mass, the nonperturbative contributions are expected to be sizable, about (30--40)%. We conclude that extraction of the azimuthal asymmetries from available COMPASS data will provide valuable information about the transverse momentum dependent distribution of the gluon in the proton and the $c$-quark hadronization mechanism. Finally, we discuss the $\cos 2φ$ asymmetry as a probe of the gluonic analogue of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton.

The QCD evolution of TMD in the covariant approach

The procedure for calculation of the QCD evolution of transverse momentum dependent distributions within the covariant approach is suggested. The standard collinear QCD evolution together with the requirements of relativistic invariance and rotational symmetry of the nucleon in its rest frame represent the basic ingredients of our approach. The obtained results are compared with the predictions of some other approaches.

Magnetic exchange in $α$-iron from the ab initio calculations in the paramagnetic phase

Applying the local density approximation (LDA) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) to paramagnetic $α$-iron, we revisit a problem of theoretical description of its magnetic properties. The analysis of local magnetic susceptibility shows that at sufficiently low temperatures $T<1500K$, both, $e_{g}$ and $t_{2g}$ states equally contribute to the formation of the effective magnetic moment with spin S=1. The self-energy of t_{2g} states shows sizable deviations from Fermi-liquid form, which accompanies earlier found non-quasiparticle form of e_{g} states. By considering the non-uniform magnetic susceptibility we find that the non-quasiparticle form of $e_{g}$ states is crucial for obtaining ferromagnetic instability in $α$-iron. The main contribution to the exchange interaction, renormalized by the effects of electron interaction, comes from the hybridization between $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ states. We furthermore suggest the effective spin-fermion model for $α$-iron, which allows us to estimate the exchange interaction from paramagnetic phase, which is in agreement with previous calculations in the ordered state within the LDA approaches.

Spin Physics Experiments at NICA-SPD with polarized proton and deuteron beams

We propose to perform measurements of asymmetries of the Drell-Yan (DY) pairs production in collisions of non-polarized, longitudinally and transversally polarized protons and deuterons which provide an access to all leading twist collinear and TMD PDFs of quarks and anti-quarks in nucleons. The measurements of asymmetries in production of J/Ψand direct photons will be performed as well simultaneously with DY using dedicated triggers. The set of these measurements will supply complete information for tests of the quark-parton model of nucleons at the QCD twist-two level with minimal systematic errors.

Magnetic fluctuations and effective magnetic moments in γ-iron due to electronic structure peculiarities

Applying the local density and dynamical mean field approximations to paramagnetic γ-iron we revisit the problem of theoretical description of magnetic properties in a wide temperature range. We show that contrary to α-iron, the frequency dependence of the electronic self-energy has a quasiparticle form for both, t_{2g} and e_g states. In the temperature range T=1200-1500 K, where γ-iron exist in nature, this substance can be nevertheless characterized by temperature-dependent effective local moments, which yield relatively narrow peaks in the real part of the local magnetic susceptibility. At the same time, at low temperatures γ-iron (which is realized in precipitates) is better described in terms of itinerant picture. In particular, the nesting features of the Fermi surfaces yield maximum of the static magnetic susceptibility at the incommensurate wave vector q_{max} belonging the direction q_X-q_W (q_X=(2π/a)(1,0,0),q_W=(2π/a)(1,1/2,0), a is a lattice parameter) in agreement with the experimental data. This state is found however to compete closely with the states characterized by magnetic wave vectors along the directions q_X-q_L-q_K, where q_L=(2π/a)(1/2,1/2,1/2), q_K=(2π/a)(3/4,3/4,0). From the analysis of the uniform magnetic susceptibility we find that contrary to α-iron, the Curie-Weiss law is not fulfilled in a broad temperature range, although the inverse susceptibility is nearly linear in the moderate-temperature region (1200-1500 K). The non-linearity of the inverse uniform magnetic susceptibility in a broader temperature range is due to the density of states peak located close to the Fermi level. The effective exchange integrals in the paramagnetic phase are estimated on the base of momentum dependent susceptibility.
