Entropy spikes as a signature of Lifshitz transitions in the Dirac materials

We demonstrate theoretically that the characteristic feature of a 2D system undergoing $N$ consequent Lifshitz topological transitions is the occurrence of spikes of entropy per particle $s$ of a magnitude $\pm \ln 2/(J-1/2)$ with $2 \leq J \leq N$ at low temperatures. We derive a general expression for $s$ as a function of chemical potential, temperature and gap magnitude for the gapped Dirac materials. Inside the smallest gap, the dependence of $s$ on the chemical potential exhibits a dip-and-peak structure in the temperature vicinity of the Dirac point. The spikes of the entropy per particles can be considered as a signature of the Dirac materials. These distinctive characteristics of gapped Dirac materials can be detected in transport experiments where the temperature is modulated in gated structures.

Observation of macroscopic valley-polarized monolayer exciton-polaritons at room temperature

In this letter, we address the chiral properties of valley exciton-polaritons in a monolayer of WS2 in the regime of strong light-matter coupling with a Tamm-Plasmon resonance. We observe that the valley polarization, which manifests in the circular polarization of the emitted photoluminescence, is strongly enhanced in comparison to bare WS2 monolayers, and can even be observed under non-resonant excitation at ambient conditions. We study the relaxation and decay dynamics of exciton-polaritons in our device, and present a microscopic model to explain the wave vector-dependent valley depolarization as an interplay of bright and dark states, electron-hole exchange interaction and the linear polarization splitting inherent to the microcavity.

Optically induced transparency in bosonic cascade lasers

Bosonic cascade lasers are terahertz (THz) lasers based on stimulated radiative transitions between bosonic condensates of excitons or exciton-polaritons confined in a trap. We study the interaction of an incoming THz pulse resonant in frequency with the transitions between neighboring energy levels of the cascade. We show that at certain optical pump conditions the cascade becomes transparent to the incident pulse: it neither absorbs nor amplifies it, in the mean field approximation. The populations of intermediate levels of the bosonic cascade change as the THz pulse passes, nevertheless. In comparison, a fermionic cascade laser does not reveal any of these properties.

Impurity-induced modulation of terahertz waves in optically excited GaAs

The effect of the photoinduced absorption of terahertz (THz) radiation in a semi-insulating GaAs crystal is studied by the pulsed THz transmission spectroscopy. We found that a broad-band modulation of THz radiation may be induced by a low-power optical excitation in the spectral range of the impurity absorption band in GaAs. The measured modulation achieves 80\%. The amplitude and frequency characteristics of the resulting THz modulator are critically dependent on the carrier density and relaxation dynamics in the conduction band of GaAs. In semi-insulating GaAs crystals, the carrier density created by the impurity excitation is controlled by the rate of their relaxation to the impurity centers. The relaxation rate and, consequently, the frequency characteristics of the modulator can be optimized by an appropriate choice of the impurities and their concentrations. The modulation parameters can be also controlled by the crystal temperature and by the power and photon energy of the optical excitation. These experiments pave the way to the low-power fast optically-controlled THz modulation, imaging, and beam steering.

Spontaneous polariton currents in periodic lateral chains

We predict spontaneous generation of superfluid polariton currents in planar microcavities with lateral periodic modulation of both potential and decay rate. A spontaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry of a polariton condensate emerges at a critical pumping, and the current direction is stochastically chosen. We analyse the stability of the current with respect to the fluctuations of the condensate. A peculiar spatial current domain structure emerges, where the current direction is switched at the domain walls, and the characteristic domain size and lifetime scale with the pumping power.

The Ferromagnetism in the Vicinity of Lifshitz Topological Transitions

We show that the critical temperature of a ferromagnetic phase transition in a quasi-two-dimensional hole gas confined in a diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum well strongly depends on the hole chemical potential and hole density. The significant variations of the the Curie temperature occur close to the Lifshitz topological transition points where the hole Fermi surface acquires additional components of topological connectivity due to the filling of excited size-quantization subbands. The model calculations demonstrate that the Curie temperature can be doubled by a small variation of the gate voltage for the CdMnTe/CdMgTe quantum well based device.

Chiral modes at exceptional points in exciton-polariton quantum fluids

We demonstrate generation of chiral modes -- vortex flows with fixed handedness in exciton-polariton quantum fluids. The chiral modes arise in the vicinity of exceptional points (non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies) in an optically-induced resonator for exciton polaritons. In particular, a vortex is generated by driving two dipole modes of the non-Hermitian ring resonator into degeneracy. Transition through the exceptional point in the space of the system's parameters is enabled by precise manipulation of real and imaginary parts of the closed-wall potential forming the resonator. As the system is driven to the vicinity of the exceptional point, we observe the formation of a vortex state with a fixed orbital angular momentum (topological charge). Our method can be extended to generate high-order orbital angular momentum states through coalescence of multiple non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies, which could find application in integrated optoelectronics.

Valley polarized relaxation and upconversion luminescence from Tamm-Plasmon Trion-Polaritons with a MoSe2 monolayer

Transition metal dichalcogenides represent an ideal testbed to study excitonic effects, spin-related phenomena and fundamental light-matter coupling in nanoscopic condensed matter systems. In particular, the valley degree of freedom, which is unique to such direct band gap monolayers with broken inversion symmetry, adds fundamental interest in these materials. Here, we implement a Tamm-plasmon structure with an embedded MoSe2 monolayer and study the formation of polaritonic quasi-particles. Strong coupling conditions between the Tamm-mode and the trion resonance of MoSe2 are established, yielding bright luminescence from the polaritonic ground state under non-resonant optical excitation. We demonstrate, that tailoring the electrodynamic environment of the monolayer results in a significantly increased valley polarization. This enhancement can be related to change in recombination dynamics shown in time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. We furthermore observe strong upconversion luminescence from resonantly excited polariton states in the lower polariton branch. This upconverted polariton luminescence is shown to preserve the valley polarization of the trion-polariton, which paves the way towards combining spin-valley physics and exciton scattering experiments.

Photon echoes from (In,Ga)As quantum dots embedded in a Tamm-plasmon microcavity

We report on the coherent optical response from an ensemble of (In,Ga)As quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a planar Tamm-plasmon microcavity with a quality factor of approx. 100. Significant enhancement of the light-matter interaction is demonstrated under selective laser excitation of those quantum dots which are in resonance with the cavity mode. The enhancement is manifested through Rabi oscillations of the photon echo, demonstrating coherent control of excitons with picosecond pulses at intensity levels more than an order of magnitude smaller as compared with bare quantum dots. The decay of the photon echo transients is weakly changed by the resonator indicating a small decrease of the coherence time $T_2$ which we attribute to the interaction with the electron plasma in the metal layer located close (40nm) to the QD layer. Simultaneously we see a reduction of the population lifetime $T_1$, inferred from the stimulated photon echo, due to an enhancement of the spontaneous emission by a factor of 2, which is attributed to the Purcell effect, while non-radiative processes are negligible as confirmed from time-resolved photoluminescence.

Inverse-phase Rabi oscillations in semiconductor microcavities

We study experimentally the oscillations of a non stationary transient signal of a semiconductor microcavity with embedded InGaAs quantum wells. The oscillations occur as a result of quantum beats between the upper and lower polariton modes due to the strong exciton-photon coupling in the microcavity sample (Rabi oscillations). The registration of spectrally resolved signal has allowed for separate observation of oscillations at the eigenfrequencies of two polariton modes. Surprisingly, the observed oscillations measured at the lower and upper polariton modes have opposite phases. We demonstrate theoretically that the opposite-phase oscillations are caused by the pump-induced modification of polariton Hopfield coefficients, which govern the ratio of exciton and photon components in each of the polartion modes. Such a behaviour is a fundamental feature of the quantum beats of coupled light-matter states. In contrast, the reference pump-probe experiment performed for the pure excitonic states in a quantum well heterostructure with no microcavity revealed the in-phase oscillations of the pump-probe signals measured at different excitonic levels.

Light propagation in tunable exciton-polariton one-dimensional photonic crystals

Simulations of propagation of light beams in specially designed multilayer semiconductor structures (one-dimensional photonic crystals) with embedded quantum wells reveal characteristic optical properties of resonant hyperbolic metamaterials. A strong dependence of the refraction angle and the optical beam spread on the exciton radiative lifetime is revealed. We demonstrate the strong negative refraction of light and the control of the group velocity of light by an external bias through its effect upon the exciton radiative properties.

Spin noise of a polariton laser

We report on experimental study of the exciton-polariton emission (PE) polarization noise below and above the polariton lasing threshold under continuous wave nonresonant excitation. The experiments were performed with a high-Q graded 5λ/2 GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity with three quantum wells in the strong coupling regime. The PE polarization noise substantially exceeded in magnitude the shot noise level and, in the studied frequency range (up to 650 MHz), had a flat spectrum. We have found that the PE polarization noise magnitude dependence on the pump intensity showed specific features that had no analogy in power dependences of the PE intensity and intensity noise. Particularly, the linear polarization fluctuations normalized by the emission intensity showed a remarkably non-monotonic dependence on the pump power. A theoretical model describing the observed peculiarity of the PE polarization noise is proposed.

Datta-and-Das spin transistor controlled by a high-frequency electromagnetic field

We developed the theory of spin dependent transport through a spin-modulator device (so-called Datta-and-Das spin transistor) in the presence of a high-frequency electromagnetic field (dressing field). Solving the Schrödinger problem for dressed electrons, we demonstrated that the field drastically modifies the spin transport. In particular, the dressing field leads to renormalization of spin-orbit coupling constants that varies conductivity of the spin transistor. The present effect paves the way for controlling the spin-polarized electron transport with light in prospective spin-optronic devices.

Injection of orbital angular momentum and storage of quantized vortices in polariton superfluids

We report the experimental investigation and theoretical modeling of a rotating polariton superfluid relying on an innovative method for the injection of angular momentum. This novel, multi-pump injection method uses four coherent lasers arranged in a square, resonantly creating four polariton populations propagating inwards. The control available over the direction of propagation of the superflows allows injecting a controllable non-quantized amount of optical angular momentum. When the density at the center is low enough to neglect polariton-polariton interactions, optical singularities, associated to an interference pattern, are visible in the phase. In the superfluid regime resulting from the strong nonlinear polariton-polariton interaction, the interference pattern disappears and only vortices with the same sign are persisting in the system. Remarkably the number of vortices inside the superfluid region can be controlled by controlling the angular momentum injected by the pumps.

Monolayer MoSe2: A candidate for room temperature polaritonics

Monolayered MoSe2 is a promising new material to investigate advanced light-matter coupling as it hosts stable and robust excitons with comparably narrow optical resonances. In this work, we investigate the evolution of the lowest lying excitonic transition, the so-called A-valley exciton, with temperature. We find a strong, phonon-induced temperature broadening of the resonance, and more importantly, a reduction of the oscillator strength for increased temperatures. Based on these experimentally extracted, temperature dependent parameters, we apply a coupled oscillator model to elucidate the possibility to observe the strong coupling regime between the A-exciton and a microcavity resonance in three prototypical photonic architectures with varying mode volumes. We find that the formation of exciton-polaritons up to ambient conditions in short, monolithic dielectric and Tamm-based structures seems feasible. In contrast, a temperature-induced transition into the weak coupling regime can be expected for structures with extended effective cavity length. Based on these findings, we calculate and draw the phase diagram of polariton Bosonic condensation in a MoSe2 cavity.

Bunching of numbers in a non-ideal roulette: the key to winning strategies

Chances of a gambler are always lower than chances of a casino in the case of an ideal, mathematically perfect roulette, if the capital of the gambler is limited and the minimum and maximum allowed bets are limited by the casino. However, a realistic roulette is not ideal: the probabilities of realisation of different numbers slightly deviate. Describing this deviation by a statistical distribution with a width δ we find a critical δ that equalizes chances of gambler and casino in the case of a simple strategy of the game: the gambler always puts equal bets to the last N numbers. For up-critical δ the expected return of the roulette becomes positive. We show that the dramatic increase of gambler's chances is a manifestation of bunching of numbers in a non-ideal roulette. We also estimate the critical starting capital needed to ensure the low risk game for an indefinite time.

Photon echo transients from an inhomogeneous ensemble of semiconductor quantum dots

An ensemble of quantum dot excitons may be used for coherent information manipulation. Due to the ensemble inhomogeneity any optical information retrieval occurs in form of a photon echo. We show that the inhomogeneity can lead to a significant deviation from the conventional echo timing sequence. Variation of the area of the initial rotation pulse, which generates excitons in a dot sub-ensemble only, reveals this complex picture of photon echo formation. We observe a retarded echo for π/2 pulses, while for 3π/2 the echo is advanced in time as evidenced through monitoring the Rabi oscillations in the time-resolved photon echo amplitude from (In,Ga)As/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot structures and confirmed by detailed calculations.

Influence of magnetic quantum confined Stark effect on the spin lifetime of indirect excitons

We report on the unusual and counter-intuitive behaviour of spin lifetime of excitons in coupled semiconductor quantum wells (CQWs) in the presence of in-plane magnetic field. Instead of conventional acceleration of spin relaxation due to the Larmor precession of electron and hole spins we observe a strong increase of the spin relaxation time at low magnetic fields followed by saturation and decrease at higher fields. We argue that this non-monotonic spin relaxation dynamics is a fingerprint of the magnetic quantum confined Stark effect. In the presence of electric field along the CQW growth axis, an applied magnetic field efficiently suppresses the exciton spin coherence, due to inhomogeneous broadening of the $g$-factor distribution.
