Spiral structure of the Milky Way galaxy: observations and theoretical predictions

Using observational data on the kinematical properties and density distributions of the subsystems of the Milky Way galaxy, we construct a set of multi-component equilibrium models of its disk. The dynamics of the disk is studied numerically using collisionless-gaseous numerical simulations. After approximately one Gyr, a prominent central bar is formed with a semi-axis of about three kiloparsecs. Outside the central regions, a multi-armed spiral pattern develops, which can be characterized by the superposition of m=2, 3 and 4-armed spiral patterns. The spiral structure and the bar exist for at least 3 Gyr in our simulations. The presence of the bar in the disk of the MilkyWay galaxy imposes rather strict limitations on the density distributions in the subsystems of the MilkyWay galaxy. We find that bar does not form if the radial scale length of the surface density distribution of the disk is more than 2.6 kpc. Analogously, the formation of bar is suppressed in the Milky Way disk in models with a massive and compact stellar bulge. If future GAIA observations confirm the existence of the three-four armed spiral pattern in the disk of the MilkyWay, this will prove the long-term existence of spiral patterns in galactic disks.

Dynamics of unstable sound waves in a non-equilibrium medium at the nonlinear stage

A new dispersion equation is obtained for a non-equilibrium medium with an exponential relaxation model of a vibrationally excited gas. We have researched the dependencies of the pump source and the heat removal on the medium thermodynamic parameters. The boundaries of sound waves stability regions in a non-equilibrium gas have been determined. The nonlinear stage of sound waves instability development in a vibrationally excited gas has been investigated within CSPH-TVD and MUSCL numerical schemes using parallel technologies OpenMP-CUDA. We have obtained a good agreement of numerical simulation results with the linear perturbations dynamics at the initial stage of the sound waves growth caused by instability. At the nonlinear stage, the sound waves amplitude reaches the maximum value that leads to the formation of shock waves system.

Galaxies with 'Rows': A New Catalog

Galaxies with 'rows' in Vorontsov-Velyaminov's terminology stand out among the variety of spiral galactic patterns. A characteristic feature of such objects is the sequence of straight-line segments that forms the spiral arm. In 2001 A. Chernin and co-authors published a catalog of such galaxies which includes 204 objects from the Palomar Atlas. In this paper, we supplement the catalog with 276 objects based on an analysis of all the galaxies from the New General Catalogue and Index Catalogue. The total number of NGC and IC galaxies with rows is 406, including the objects of Chernin et al. (2001). The use of more recent galaxy images allowed us to detect more 'rows' on average, compared with the catalog of Chernin et al. When comparing the principal galaxy properties we found no significant differences between galaxies with rows and all S-type NGC/IC galaxies. We discuss twomechanisms for the formation of polygonal structures based on numerical gas-dynamic and collisionless N-body calculations, which demonstrate that a spiral pattern with rows is a transient stage in the evolution of galaxies and a system with a powerful spiral structure can pass through this stage. The hypothesis of A. Chernin et al. (2001) that the occurrence frequency of interacting galaxies is twice higher among galaxies with rows is not confirmed for the combined set of 480 galaxies. The presence of a central stellar bar appears to be a favorable factor for the formation of a system of 'rows'.

New features of parallel implementation of N-body problems on GPU

This paper focuses on the parallel implementation of a direct $N$-body method~(particle-particle algorithm) and the application of multiple GPUs for galactic dynamics simulations. Application of a hybrid OpenMP-CUDA technology is considered for models with a number of particles $N \sim 10^5 ÷10^7$. By means of $N$-body simulations of gravitationally unstable stellar galactic we have investigated the algorithms parallelization efficiency for various Nvidia Tesla graphics processors~(K20, K40, K80). Particular attention was paid to the parallel performance of simulations and accuracy of the numerical solution by comparing single and double floating-point precisions~(SP and DP). We showed that the double-precision simulations are slower by a factor of~$1.7$ than the single-precision runs performed on Nvidia Tesla K-Series processors. We also claim that application of the single-precision operations leads to incorrect result in the evolution of the non-axisymmetric gravitating $N$-body systems. In particular, it leads to significant quantitative and even qualitative distortions in the galactic disk evolution. For instance, after $10^4$ integration time steps for the single-precision numbers the total energy, momentum, and angular momentum of a system with $N = 2^{20}$ conserve with accuracy of $10^{-3}$, $10^{-2}$ and $10^{-3}$ respectively, in comparison to the double-precision simulations these values are $10^{-5}$, $10^{-15}$ and $10^{-13}$, respectively. Our estimations evidence in favour of usage of the second-order accuracy schemes with double-precision numbers since it is more efficient than in the fourth-order schemes with single-precision numbers.

Numerical Modeling of the Internal Temperature in the Mammary Gland

The microwave thermometry method for the diagnosis of breast cancer is based on an analysis of the internal temperature distribution. This paper is devoted to the construction of a mathematical model for increasing the accuracy of measuring the internal temperature of mammary glands, which are regarded as a complex combination of several components, such as fat tissue, muscle tissue, milk lobules, skin, blood flows, tumor tissue. Each of these biocomponents is determined by its own set of physical parameters. Our numerical model is designed to calculate the spatial distributions of the electric microwave field and the temperature inside the biological tissue. We compare the numerical simulations results to the real medical measurements of the internal temperature.

Software for full-color 3D reconstruction of the biological tissues internal structure

A software for processing sets of full-color images of biological tissue histological sections is developed. We used histological sections obtained by the method of high-precision layer-by-layer grinding of frozen biological tissues. The software allows restoring the image of the tissue for an arbitrary cross-section of the tissue sample. Thus, our method is designed to create a full-color 3D reconstruction of the biological tissue structure. The resolution of 3D reconstruction is determined by the quality of the initial histological sections. The newly developed technology available to us provides a resolution of up to 5 - 10 μm in three dimensions.

Dark matter in galaxies

Dark matter in galaxies, its abundance, and its distribution remain a subject of long-standing discussion, especially in view of the fact that neither dark matter particles nor dark matter bodies have yet been found. Experts' opinions range from a very large number of completely dark galaxies exist to nonbaryonic dark matter does not exist at all in any significant amounts. We discuss astronomical evidence for the existence of dark matter and its connection with visible matter and examine attempts to estimate its mass and distribution in galaxies from photometry, dynamics, gravitational lensing, and other observations (the cosmological aspects of the existence of dark matter are not considered in this review). In our view, the presence of dark matter in and around galaxies is a well-established fact. We conclude with an overview of mechanisms by which a dark halo can influence intragalactic processes.

The problem of boundary conditions for the shallow water equations (Russian)

The problem of choice of boundary conditions are discussed for the case of numerical integration of the shallow water equations on a substantially irregular relief. In modeling of unsteady surface water flows has a dynamic boundary partitioning liquid and dry bottom. The situation is complicated by the emergence of sub- and supercritical flow regimes for the problems of seasonal floodplain flooding, flash floods, tsunami landfalls. Analysis of the use of various methods of setting conditions for the physical quantities of liquid when the settlement of the boundary shows the advantages of using the waterfall type conditions in the presence of strong inhomogeneities landforms. When there is a waterfall on the border of the computational domain and heterogeneity of the relief in the vicinity of the boundary portion may occur, which is formed by the region of critical flow with the formation of a hydraulic jump, which greatly weakens the effect of the waterfall on the flow pattern upstream.

A computer simulation of the Volga River hydrological regime: a problem of water-retaining dam optimal location

We investigate of a special dam optimal location at the Volga river in area of the Akhtuba left sleeve beginning (7 \, km to the south of the Volga Hydroelectric Power Station dam). We claim that a new water-retaining dam can resolve the key problem of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain related to insufficient water amount during the spring flooding due to the overregulation of the Lower Volga. By using a numerical integration of Saint-Vacant equations we study the water dynamics across the northern part of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain with taking into account its actual topography. As the result we found an amount of water $V_A$ passing to the Akhtuba during spring period for a given water flow through the Volga Hydroelectric Power Station (so-called hydrograph which characterises the water flow per unit of time). By varying the location of the water-retaining dam $ x_d, y_d $ we obtained various values of $V_A (x_d, y_d) $ as well as various flow spatial structure on the territory during the flood period. Gradient descent method provide us the dam coordinated with the maximum value of ${V_A}$. Such approach to the dam location choice let us to find the best solution, that the value $V_A$ increases by a factor of 2. Our analysis demonstrate a good potential of the numerical simulations in the field of hydraulic works.

GMCs scaling relations: role of the cloud definition

We investigate physical properties of molecular clouds in disc galaxies with different morphology: a galaxy without prominent structure, a spiral barred galaxy and a galaxy with flocculent structure. Our $N$-body/hydrodynamical simulations take into account non-equilibrium H$_2$ and CO chemical kinetics, self-gravity, star formation and feedback processes. For the simulated galaxies the scaling relations of giant molecular clouds or so called Larson's relations are studied for two types of a cloud definition (or extraction methods): the first one is based on total column density position-position (PP) datasets and the second one is indicated by the CO~(1-0) line emission used position-position-velocity (PPV) data. We find that the cloud populations obtained by using both cloud extraction methods generally have similar physical parameters. Except that for the CO data the mass spectrum of clouds has a tail with low-massive objects $M\sim 10^3-10^4$~\Msun. Varying column density threshold the power-law indices in the scaling relations are significantly changed. In contrast, the relations are invariant to CO brightness temperature threshold. Finally, we find that the mass spectra of clouds for the PPV data are almost insensitive to the galactic morphology, whereas the spectra for the PP data demonstrate significant variations.

Numerical code for multi-component galaxies: from N-body to chemistry and magnetic fields

We present a numerical code for multi-component simulation of the galactic evolution. Our code includes the following parts: $N$-body is used to evolve dark matter, stellar dynamics and dust grains, gas dynamics is based on TVD-MUSCL scheme with the extra modules for thermal processes, star formation, magnetic fields, chemical kinetics and multi-species advection. We describe our code in brief, but we give more details for the magneto-gas dynamics. We present several tests for our code and show that our code have passed the tests with a reasonable accuracy. Our code is parallelized using the MPI library. We apply our code to study the large scale dynamics of galactic discs.

To be or not to be oblate: the shape of the dark matter halo in the polar ring galaxies

With the aim to determine the spatial distribution of the dark matter halo, we investigate two polar ring galaxies NGC 4262 and SPRC-7. For both galaxies the stellar kinematics data for the central galaxy were obtained from optical spectroscopy at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The information about polar gaseous components was taken from the optical 3D-spectroscopic observations of ionized gas (for SPRC-7) and H {\sc i} radio observations (for NGC 4262). SPRC-7 is the system with a relative angle $δ=73^{\circ}$ towards the central galaxy and a quite massive stellar-gaseous polar component. Meanwhile NGC 4262 is the classic polar case with $δ=88^{\circ}$ where the polar ring mainly consists of neutral gas with a negligible stellar contribution to the mass. We are hence dealing with two different systems and the results are quite diverse too. The observed properties of both galaxies were compared with the results of self consistent simulations of velocity fields of the polar component along with the rotation curve of the central lenticular galaxy. For SPRC-7 we have found a slightly flattened halo towards the polar plane with the axis ratio $c/a \simeq 1.7 \pm 0.2$ for the isothermal halo model and $c/a \simeq 1.5 \pm 0.2$ for the NFW model. The case of NGC 4262 is more unusual, the shape of the dark matter distribution varies strongly with radius. Namely, the dark matter halo is fattened in the vicinity of the galactic disc ($c/a \approx 0.4 \pm 0.1$), however it is prolate far beyond the central galaxy ($c/a \approx 1.7$ for the isothermal halo and $c/a \approx 2.3$ for NFW).

The shape of dark matter halo in PRG NGC 4262

With the aim to determine the spatial distribution of dark matter, we investigate the polar ring galaxy NGC 4262. We used the stellar kinematics data for the central galaxy obtained from optical spectroscopy together with information about the kinematics of the neutral hydrogen for polar component. It was shown that NGC 4262 is the classic polar ring galaxy case with the relative angle of $88^{\circ}$ between components. From simulations of the central galaxy and ring kinematics we found that the shape of the dark matter distribution varies strongly with the radius. Namely, the dark matter halo is flattened towards the galactic disk plane $c/a=0.4$, however it is prolate to the orthogonal (polar) plane far beyond the central galaxy $c/a=1.7$. Also, the simulations of the ring evolution let us to confirm the stability of the ring and the formation of quasi-spiral structures within it.

Interaction between collisionless galactic discs and nonaxissymmetric dark matter haloes

Using $N$-body simulations ($N\sim 10^6 - 10^7$), we examine how a non-axisymmetric dark halo affects the dynamical evolution of the structure in collisionless (stellar) discs. We demonstrate how the model parameters such as mass of the halo, initial conditions in the disc and the halo axes ratio affect morphology and kinematics of the stellar discs. We show that a non-axisymmetric halo can generate a large-scale spiral density pattern in the embedded stellar disc. The pattern is observed in the disc for many periods of its revolution, even if the disc is gravitationally over-stable. The growth of the spiral arms is not accompanied by significant dynamical heating of the disc, irrelevant to its initial parameters. We also investigate transformation of the dark halo's shape driven by the long-lived spiral pattern in the disc . We show that the analysis of the velocity field in the stellar disc and in the spiral pattern gives us a possibility to figure out the spatial orientation of the triaxial-shaped dark halo and to measure the triaxiality.

Kinematics and Stellar Disk Modeling of Lenticular Galaxies

We present the results of spectroscopic observations of three S0-Sa galaxies: NGC338, NGC 3245, and NGC 5440 at the SAO RAS 6-m BTA telescope. The radial distributions of the line-of-sight velocities and radial velocity dispersions of stars and ionized gas were obtained, and rotation curves of galaxies were computed. We construct the numerical dynamic N-body galaxy models with N > 10^6 point masses. The models include three components: a "live" bulge, a collisionless disk, dynamically evolving to the marginally stable state, and a pseudo-isothermal dark halo. The estimates of radial velocities and velocity dispersions of stars obtained from observations are compared with model estimates, projected onto the line of sight. We show that the disks of NGC 5440 and the outer regions of NGC 338 are dynamically overheated. Taking into account the previously obtained observations, we conclude that the dynamic heating of the disk is present in a large number of early-type disk galaxies, and it seems to ensue from the external effects. The estimates of the disk mass and relative mass of the dark halo are given for seven galaxies, observed at the BTA.

Polar rings dynamics in the triaxial dark matter halo

Spectroscopic observations at the Russian 6-m telescope are used to study the two polar ring galaxies (PRGs) from the catalogue by Moiseev et al.: SPRC-7 and SPRC-260. We have analyzed the kinematics of the stellar component of the central galaxies as well as the ionized gas kinematics in the external ring structures. The disc-halo decomposition of rotation curves in two perpendicular directions are considered. The observed 2D velocity fields are compared with the model predictions for different dark halo shapes. Based on these data, we constrain that for potential of DM halo semiaxis ratios is $s=0.8$, $q=1$ for SPRC-7 and $s=0.95$, $q=1.1$ for SPRC-260. Using 3D hydrodynamic simulations we also study the dynamics and evolution of the polar component in the potential of the galactic disc and dark halo for these two galaxies. We show that the polar component is dynamically quasi-stable on the scale of $\sim10$ dynamical times (about a few Gyr). This is demonstrate the possibility for the growth of a spiral structure, which then steadily transforms to a lopsided gaseous system in the polar pane.

Global Gravitationally-Organized Spiral Waves and the Structure of NGC 5247

Using observational data, we build numerical N-body, hydrodynamical and combined equilibrium models for the spiral galaxy NGC 5247. The models turn out to be unstable towards spiral structure formation. We simulate scenarios of spiral structure formation for different sets of equilibrium rotation curves, radial velocity dispersion profiles and disk thickness and demonstrate that in all cases a simulated spiral pattern qualitatively agrees with the observed morphology of NGC 5247. We also demonstrate that an admixture of a gaseous component with mass of about a few percent of the total mass of the disk increases a lifetime of a spiral pattern by approximately 30%. The simulated spiral pattern in this case lasts for about 3 Gyr from the beginning of the growth of perturbations.

The simulation of molecular clouds formation in the Milky Way

Using 3D hydrodynamic calculations we simulate formation of molecular clouds in the Galaxy. The simulations take into account molecular hydrogen chemical kinetics, cooling and heating processes. Comprehensive gravitational potential accounts for contributions from the stellar bulge, two and four armed spiral structure, stellar disk, dark halo and takes into account self-gravitation of the gaseous component. Gas clouds in our model form in the spiral arms due to shear and wiggle instabilities and turn into molecular clouds after $t\simgt 100$ Myr. At the times $t\sim 100 - 300$ Myr the clouds form hierarchical structures and agglomerations with the sizes of 100 pc and greater. We analyze physical properties of the simulated clouds and find that synthetic statistical distributions like mass spectrum, "mass-size" relation and velocity dispersion are close to those observed in the Galaxy. The synthetic $l-v$ (galactic longitude - radial velocity) diagram of the simulated molecular gas distribution resembles observed one and displays a structure with appearance similar to Molecular Ring of the Galaxy. Existence of this structure in our modelling can be explained by superposition of emission from the galactic bar and the spiral arms at $\sim$3-4 kpc.
