Special Functions of the Isomonodromy Type, Rational Transformations of Spectral Parameter, and Algebraic Solutions of the Sixth Painlevé Equation

We discuss relations which exist between analytic functions belonging to the recently introduced class of special functions of the isomonodromy type (SFITs). These relations can be obtained by application of some simple transformations to auxiliary ODEs with respect to a spectral parameter which associated with each SFIT. We consider two applications of rational transformations of the spectral parameter in the theory of SFITs. One of the most striking applications which is considered here is an explicit construction of algebraic solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation.

Non-Schlesinger Deformations of Ordinary Differential Equations with Rational Coefficients

We consider deformations of $2\times2$ and $3\times3$ matrix linear ODEs with rational coefficients with respect to singular points of Fuchsian type which don't satisfy the well-known system of Schlesinger equations (or its natural generalization). Some general statements concerning reducibility of such deformations for $2\times2$ ODEs are proved. An explicit example of the general non-Schlesinger deformation of $2\times2$-matrix ODE of the Fuchsian type with 4 singular points is constructed and application of such deformations to the construction of special solutions of the corresponding Schlesinger systems is discussed. Some examples of isomonodromy and non-isomonodromy deformations of $3\times3$ matrix ODEs are considered. The latter arise as the compatibility conditions with linear ODEs with non-singlevalued coefficients.

On solutions of the Schlesinger Equations in Terms of $Θ$-Functions

In this paper we construct explicit solutions and calculate the corresponding $τ$-function to the system of Schlesinger equations describing isomonodromy deformations of $2\times 2$ matrix linear ordinary differential equation whose coefficients are rational functions with poles of the first order; in particular, in the case when the coefficients have four poles of the first order and the corresponding Schlesinger system reduces to the sixth Painlevé equation with the parameters $1/8, -1/8, 1/8, 3/8$, our construction leads to a new representation of the general solution to this Painlevé equation obtained earlier by K. Okamoto and N. Hitchin, in terms of elliptic theta-functions.

Asymptotics of Solutions to the Modified Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation: Solitons on a Non-Vanishing Continuous Background

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorization approach for nonlinear evolution systems which take the form of Lax-pair isospectral deformations and whose corresponding Lax operators contain both discrete and continuous spectra, the leading-order asymptotics as $t \to \pm \infty$ of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} u + {1/2} \partial_{x}^{2} u + | u |^{2} u + i s \partial_{x} (| u |^{2} u) = 0$, $s \in \Bbb R_{>0}$, which is a model for nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers in the subpicosecond time scale, are obtained: also derived are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent nonlinear evolution equations; in particular, the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} q + \partial_{x}^{2} q - i \partial_{x} (| q |^{2} q) = 0$. As an application of these asymptotic results, explicit expressions for position and phase shifts of solitons in the presence of the continuous spectrum are calculated.

Leading Order Temporal Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation: Solitonless Sector

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear evolution equations (NLEEs) integrable in the sense of the inverse scattering method, we obtain, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as $t$ tends to plus and minus infinity of the solution to the Cauchy initial-value problem for the modified non-linear Schrodinger equation: also obtained are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent NLEEs; in particular, the derivative non-linear Schrodinger equation.
