Spin pumping in YIG-Pt structures: the role of the van Hove singularities

Spin pumping by surface and backward volume magnetostatic waves in YIG/Pt structures is experimentally studied and analyzed. It is shown that at frequencies corresponding to van Hove singularities in the density of states of the spin wave spectrum, an increase in the efficiency of electron-magnon scattering and spin current generation takes place. The obtained results are important for spin wave-based spintronic devices development.

Spin state of negative charge-transfer material SrCoO3

We employ the combination of the density functional and the dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) to investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of SrCoO3, monocrystal of which were prepared recently. Our calculations lead to a ferromagnetic metal in agreement with experiment. We find that, contrary to some suggestions, the local moment in SrCoO3 does not arise from intermediate spin state, but is a result of coherent superposition of many different atomic states. We discuss how attribution of magnetic response to different atomic states in solids with local moments can be quantified.

Electronic correlations and crystal structure distortions in BaBiO3

BaBiO3 is a material where formally Bi4+ ions with the half-filled 6s-states form the alternating set of Bi3+ and Bi5+ ions resulting in a charge ordered insulator. The charge ordering is accompanied by the breathing distortion of the BiO6 octahedra (extension and contraction of the Bi-O bond lengths). Standard Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations fail to obtain the crystal structure instability caused by the pure breathing distortions. Combining effects of the breathing distortions and tilting of the BiO6 octahedra allows DFT to reproduce qualitatively experimentally observed insulator with monoclinic crystal structure but gives strongly underestimate breathing distortion parameter and energy gap values. In the present work we reexamine the BaBiO3 problem within the GGA+U method using a Wannier functions basis set for the Bi 6s-band. Due to high oxidation state of bismuth in this material the Bi 6s-symmetry Wannier function is predominantly extended spatially on surrounding oxygen ions and hence differs strongly from a pure atomic 6s-orbital. That is in sharp contrast to transition metal oxides (with exclusion of high oxidation state compounds) where the major part a of d-band Wannier function is concentrated on metal ion and a pure atomic d-orbital can serve as a good approximation. The GGA+U calculation results agree well with experimental data, in particular with experimental crystal structure parameters and energy gap values. Moreover, the GGA+U method allows one to reproduce the crystal structure instability due to the pure breathing distortions without octahedra tilting.

{\it Ab initio} Studies on the Interplay between Spin-Orbit Interaction and Coulomb Correlation in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$

{\it Ab initio} analyses of A$_2$IrO$_4$ (A=Sr, Ba) are presented. Effective Hubbard-type models for Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ manifolds downfolded from the global band structure are solved based on the dynamical mean-field theory. The results for A=Sr and Ba correctly reproduce paramagnetic metals undergoing continuous transitions to insulators below the Néel temperature $T_N$. These compounds are classified not into Mott insulators but into Slater insulators. However, the insulating gap opens by a synergy of the Neel order and significant band renormalization, which is also manifested by a 2D bad metallic behavior in the paramagnetic phase near the quantum criticality.

Classification of the electronic correlation strength in the Fe-pnictides: The case of the parent compound BaFe2As2

Electronic correlations in the Fe-pnictide BaFe2As2 are explored within LDA+DMFT, the combination of density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory. While the correlated band structure is substantially renormalized there is only little transfer of spectral weight. The computed k-integrated and k-resolved spectral functions are in good agreement with photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and angular resolved PES experiments. Making use of a general classification scheme for the strength of electronic correlations we conclude that BaFe2As2 is a moderately correlated system.

Coulomb repulsion and correlation strength in LaFeAsO from Density Functional and Dynamical Mean-Field Theories

LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) computation scheme has been used to calculate spectral properties of LaFeAsO -- the parent compound for new high-T$_c$ iron oxypnictides. Coulomb repulsion $U$ and Hund's exchange $J$ parameters for iron 3d electrons were calculated using \textit {first principles} constrained density functional theory scheme in Wannier functions formalism. Resulting values strongly depend on the number of states taken into account in calculations: when full set of O-$2p$, As-$4p$, and Fe-3d orbitals with corresponding bands are included, computation results in $U=3÷$4 eV and J=0.8 eV. In contrast to that when the basis set is restricted to Fe-3d orbitals and bands only, computation gives much smaller parameter values $F^0$=0.8 eV, $J$=0.5 eV. However, DMFT calculations with both parameter sets and corresponding to them choice of basis functions result in weakly correlated electronic structure that is in agreement with experimental X-ray and photoemission spectra.

Construction and solution of a Wannier-functions based Hamiltonian in the pseudopotential plane-wave framework for strongly correlated materials

Ab initio determination of model Hamiltonian parameters for strongly correlated materials is a key issue in applying many-particle theoretical tools to real narrow-band materials. We propose a self-contained calculation scheme to construct, with an ab initio approach, and solve such a Hamiltonian. The scheme uses a Wannier-function-basis set, with the Coulomb interaction parameter U obtained specifically for these Wannier functions via constrained Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Hamiltonian is solved by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) with the effective impurity problem treated by the Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. Our scheme is based on the pseudopotential plane-wave method, which makes it suitable for developments addressing the challenging problem of crystal structural relaxations and transformations due to correlation effects. We have applied our scheme to the "charge transfer insulator" material nickel oxide and demonstrate a good agreement with the experimental photoemission spectra.

Coulomb Parameter U and Correlation Strength in LaFeAsO

First principles constrained density functional theory scheme in Wannier functions formalism has been used to calculate Coulomb repulsion U and Hund's exchange J parameters for iron 3d electrons in LaFeAsO. Results strongly depend on the basis set used in calculations: when O-2p, As-4p, and Fe-3d orbitals and corresponding bands are included, computation results in U=3-4 eV, however, with the basis set restricted to Fe-3d orbitals and bands only, computation gives parameters corresponding to F^0=0.8 eV, J=0.5 eV. LDA+DMFT (the Local Density Approximation combined with the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) calculation with this parameters results in weakly correlated electronic structure that is in agreement with X-ray experimental spectra.

Wannier functions and exchange integrals: The example of LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$

Starting from a single band Hubbard model in the Wannier function basis, we revisit the problem of the ligand contribution to exchange and derive explicit formulae for the exchange integrals in metal oxide compounds in terms of atomic parameters that can be calculated with constrained LDA and LDA+U. The analysis is applied to the investigation of the isotropic exchange interactions of LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$, a compound where the Cu-O-Cu angle of the dominant exchange path is close to 90$^{\circ}$. Our results show that the magnetic moments are localized in Wannier orbitals which have strong contribution from oxygen atomic orbitals, leading to exchange integrals that considerably differ from the estimates based on kinetic exchange only. Using LSDA+U approach, we also perform a direct {\it ab-initio} determination of the exchange integrals LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$. The results agree well with those obtained from the Wannier function approach, a clear indication that this modelization captures the essential physics of exchange. A comparison with experimental results is also included, with the conclusion that a very precise determination of the Wannier function is crucial to reach quantitative estimates.

Orbital densities functional

Local density approximation (LDA) to the density functional theory (DFT) has continuous derivative of total energy as a number of electrons function and continuous exchange-correlation potential, while in exact DFT both should be discontinuous as number of electrons goes through an integer value. We propose orbital densities functional (ODF) (with orbitals defined as Wannier functions) that by construction obeys this discontinuity condition. By its variation one-electron equations are obtained with potential in the form of projection operator. The operator increases a separation between occupied and empty bands thus curing LDA deficiency of energy gap value systematic underestimation. Orbital densities functional minimization gives ground state orbital and total electron densities. The ODF expression for the energy of orbital densities fluctuations around the ground state values defines ODF fluctuation Hamiltonian that allows to treat correlation effects. Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) was used to solve this Hamiltonian with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for effective impurity problem. We have applied ODF method to the problem of metal-insulator transition in lanthanum trihydride LaH_{3-x}. In LDA calculations ground state of this material is metallic for all values of hydrogen nonstoichiometry x while experimentally the system is insulating for x < 0.3. ODF method gave paramagnetic insulator solution for LaH_3 and LaH_{2.75} but metallic state for LaH_{2.5}.

Transition state method and Wannier functions

We propose a computational scheme for materials where standard Local Density Approximation (LDA) fails to produce a satisfactory description of excitation energies. The method uses Slater's "transition state" approximation and Wannier functions basis set. We define a correction to LDA functional in such a way that its variation produces one-electron energies for Wannier functions equal to the energies obtained in "transition state" constrained LDA calculations. In the result eigenvalues of the proposed functional could be interpreted as excitation energies of the system under consideration. The method was applied to MgO, Si, NiO and BaBiO$_3$ and gave an improved agreement with experimental data of energy gap values comparing with LDA.

Comparative study of correlation effects in CaVO3 and SrVO3

We present parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory) results for the many-body spectra of cubic SrVO3 and orthorhombic CaVO3. Both systems are found to be strongly correlated metals, but not on the verge of a metal-insulator transition. In spite of the considerably smaller V-O-V bond angle in CaVO3 the LDA+DMFT spectra of the two systems for energies E E_F shows more pronounced, albeit still small, differences. This is in contrast to earlier theoretical and experimental conclusions, but in good agreement with recent bulk-sensitive photoemission and x-ray absorption experiments.

Mutual Experimental and Theoretical Validation of Bulk Photoemission Spectra of Sr1-xCaxVO3

We report high-resolution high-energy photoemission spectra together with parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory) results for Sr1-xCaxVO3, a prototype 3d1 system. In contrast to earlier investigations the bulk spectra are found to be insensitive to x. The good agreement between experiment and theory confirms the bulk-sensitivity of the high-energy photoemission spectra.

Full orbital calculation scheme for materials with strongly correlated electrons

We propose a computational scheme for the ab initio calculation of Wannier functions (WFs) for correlated electronic materials. The full-orbital Hamiltonian H is projected into the WF subspace defined by the physically most relevant partially filled bands. The Hamiltonian H^{WF} obtained in this way, with interaction parameters calculated by constrained LDA for the Wannier orbitals, is used as an ab initio setup of the correlation problem, which can then be solved by many-body techniques, e.g., dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In such calculations the self-energy operator Σ(e) is defined in WF basis which then can be converted back into the full-orbital Hilbert space to compute the full-orbital interacting Green function G(r,r',e). Using G(r,r',e) one can evaluate the charge density, modified by correlations, together with a new set of WFs, thus defining a fully self-consistent scheme. The Green function can also be used for the calculation of spectral, magnetic and electronic properties of the system. Here we report the results obtained with this method for SrVO3 and V2O3. Comparisons are made with previous results obtained by the LDA+DMFT approach where the LDA DOS was used as input, and with new bulk-sensitive experimental spectra.

First principle computation of stripes in cuprates

We present a first principle computation of vertical stripes in $La_{15/8}Sr_{1/8}CuO_4$ within the LDA+U method. We find that Cu centered stripes are unstable toward O centered stripes. The metallic core of the stripe is quite wide and shows reduced magnetic moments with suppressed antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions. The system can be pictured as alternating metallic and AF two-leg ladders the latter with strong AF interaction and a large spin gap. The Fermi surface shows warping due to interstripe hybridization. The periodicity and amplitude of the warping is in good agreement with angle resolved photoemission experiment. We discuss the connection with low-energy theories of the cuprates.

Explanation of the similarity of the experimental photoemission spectra of SrVO3 and CaVO3

We present parameter-free LDA+DMFT results for the many-particle density of states of cubic SrVO3 and orthorhombic CaVO3. Both systems are found to be strongly correlated metals, but em not on the verge of a metal-insulator transition. In spite of the considerably smaller V-O-V bonding angle in CaVO3 the photoemission spectra of the two systems are very similar, their quasiparticle parts being almost identical. This is in contrast to earlier theoretical and experimental conclusions, but in agreement with recent bulk-sensitive photoemission experiments.
