Star-forming regions at the periphery of the supershell surrounding the Cyg OB1 association. I. The star cluster vdB 130 and its ambient gas and dust medium

Stellar population and the interstellar gas-dust medium in the vicinity of the open star cluster vdB 130 are analysed using optical observations taken with the 6-m telescope of the SAO RAS and the 125-cm telescope of the SAI MSU along with the data of Spitzer and Herschel. Based on proper motions and BV and JHKs 2MASS photometric data, we select additional 36 stars as probable cluster members. Some stars in vdB 130 are classified as B stars. Our estimates of minimum colour excess, apparent distance modulus and the distance are consistent with young age (from 5 to 10 Myrs) of the cluster vdB 130. We suppose the large deviations from the conventional extinction law in the cluster direction, with $R_V$ ~ 4 - 5. The cluster vdB 130 appears to be physically related to the supershell around Cyg OB1, a cometary CO cloud, ionized gas, and regions of infrared emission. There are a few regions of bright mid-infrared emission in the vicinity of vdB 130. The largest of them is also visible on H-alpha and [SII] emission maps. We suggest that the infrared blobs that coincide in projection with the head of the molecular cloud are HII regions, excited by the cluster B-stars. Some signatures of a shock front are identified between these IR-bright regions.

New Extended Radio Sources From the NVSS

We report the results of the spectroscopic observations carried out at the SAO RAS 6-m telescope for the optical components of nine new extended radio sources found in the NVSS catalog. The measured redshifts of the host galaxies are in the range of z=0.1-0.4. The physical sizes of radio sources were calculated within the standard cosmological model. The two most extended objects, 0003+1512 and 0422+0351 reach the sizes of 2.1 Mpc and 4.0 Mpc, respectively. This is close to the maximum size of known radio sources.

The supergiant shell with triggered star formation in Irr galaxy IC 2574: neutral and ionized gas kinematics

We analyse the ionized gas kinematics in the star formation regions of the supergiant shell (SGS) of the IC 2574 galaxy using observations with the Fabry-Perot interferometer at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS; the data of the THINGS survey are used to analyze the neutral gas kinematics in the area. We perform the 'derotation' of the H-alpha and HI data cubes and show its efficiency in kinematics analysis. We confirm the SGS expansion velocity 25 km/s obtained by Walter & Brinks (1999) and conclude that the SGS is located at the far side of the galactic disc plane. We determine the expansion velocities, kinematic ages, and the required mechanical energy input rates for four star formation complexes in the walls of the SGS; for the remaining ones we give the limiting values of the above parameters. A comparison with the age and energy input of the complexes' stellar population shows that sufficient energy is fed to all HII regions except one. We discuss in detail the possible nature of this region and that of another one, which was believed to be an SNR according to radio observations. We measured the expansion velocity of the latter and confirm its identification as an old SNR. Our observations allowed us to identify a faint diffuse H-alpha emission inside the SGS which was never observed before.

To be or not to be oblate: the shape of the dark matter halo in the polar ring galaxies

With the aim to determine the spatial distribution of the dark matter halo, we investigate two polar ring galaxies NGC 4262 and SPRC-7. For both galaxies the stellar kinematics data for the central galaxy were obtained from optical spectroscopy at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The information about polar gaseous components was taken from the optical 3D-spectroscopic observations of ionized gas (for SPRC-7) and H {\sc i} radio observations (for NGC 4262). SPRC-7 is the system with a relative angle $δ=73^{\circ}$ towards the central galaxy and a quite massive stellar-gaseous polar component. Meanwhile NGC 4262 is the classic polar case with $δ=88^{\circ}$ where the polar ring mainly consists of neutral gas with a negligible stellar contribution to the mass. We are hence dealing with two different systems and the results are quite diverse too. The observed properties of both galaxies were compared with the results of self consistent simulations of velocity fields of the polar component along with the rotation curve of the central lenticular galaxy. For SPRC-7 we have found a slightly flattened halo towards the polar plane with the axis ratio $c/a \simeq 1.7 \pm 0.2$ for the isothermal halo model and $c/a \simeq 1.5 \pm 0.2$ for the NFW model. The case of NGC 4262 is more unusual, the shape of the dark matter distribution varies strongly with radius. Namely, the dark matter halo is fattened in the vicinity of the galactic disc ($c/a \approx 0.4 \pm 0.1$), however it is prolate far beyond the central galaxy ($c/a \approx 1.7$ for the isothermal halo and $c/a \approx 2.3$ for NFW).

Ionized gas rotation curves in nearby dwarf galaxies

We present the results of study of the ionized gas velocity fields in 28 nearby (systemic velocity below 1000 km/s) dwarf galaxies. The observations were made at the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer in the H-alpha emission line. We were able to measure regular circular rotation parameters in 25 galaxies. As a rule, rotation velocities measured in HII are in a good agreement with the data on the HI kinematics at the same radii. Three galaxies reveal position angles of the kinematic axis in the HII velocity fields that strongly (tens of degrees) differ from the measurements in neutral hydrogen at large distances from the center or from the orientation of the major axis of optical isophotes. The planes of the gaseous and stellar disks in these galaxies most likely do not coincide. Namely, in DDO 99 the gaseous disk is warped beyond the optical radius, and in UGC 3672 and UGC 8508 the inclination of orbits of gas clouds varies in the inner regions of galaxies. It is possible that the entire ionized gas in UGC 8508 rotates in the plane polar to the stellar disk.

Panoramic Spectroscopy of Galaxies with Star-formation Regions. A Study of SBS 1202+583

The methods of panoramic (3D) spectroscopy are used in a detailed study of galaxies with ongoing star formation chosen from among objects in seven selected fields of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS). This article deals with the irregular galaxy SBS 1202+583, which our classification scheme identifies as being in a continuous phase of starformation. Observations were made with the panoramic spectrographs MPFS at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and VAGR at the 2.6-m telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) in Armenia. The data are used to construct charts of the radiative fluxes in the continuum and various emission lines. Special attention is devoted to analyzing the emission in the Hα hydrogen recombination line and in the forbidden low-ionization doublets of nitrogen [NII]λλ6548, 6583 and sulfur [SII]λλ 6716,6731, and the ratios of the intensities of the forbidden lines to Hα. The observable characteristics (sizes, Hα fluxes, etc.) of nine HII regions are studied. The estimated current rates of starformation in the individual HII regions based on the Hα fluxes lie within the range of 0.3-1.2 Msun/year. The dependence of the ratio of the intensities of the emission in these two forbidden doublets on the rate of star formation in the HII regions is found.

The shape of dark matter halo in PRG NGC 4262

With the aim to determine the spatial distribution of dark matter, we investigate the polar ring galaxy NGC 4262. We used the stellar kinematics data for the central galaxy obtained from optical spectroscopy together with information about the kinematics of the neutral hydrogen for polar component. It was shown that NGC 4262 is the classic polar ring galaxy case with the relative angle of $88^{\circ}$ between components. From simulations of the central galaxy and ring kinematics we found that the shape of the dark matter distribution varies strongly with the radius. Namely, the dark matter halo is flattened towards the galactic disk plane $c/a=0.4$, however it is prolate to the orthogonal (polar) plane far beyond the central galaxy $c/a=1.7$. Also, the simulations of the ring evolution let us to confirm the stability of the ring and the formation of quasi-spiral structures within it.

Are polar rings indeed polar?

We have considered polar ring galaxy candidates, the images of which can be found in the SDSS. The sample of 78 galaxies includes the most reliable candidates from the SPRC and PRC catalogs, some of which already have kinematic confirmations. We analyze the distributions of studied objects by the angle between the polar ring and the central disk, and by the optical diameter of the outer ring structures. In the vast majority of cases, the outer structures lie in the plane close to polar (within 10-20 deg) which indicates the stability of the corresponding orbits in the gravitational potential of the halo. Moderately inclined outer structures are observed only in about 6% of objects which probably indicates their short lifetime. In such an unstable configuration, the polar ring would often cross the disk of the galaxy, being smaller than it in the diameter. We show that the inner polar structures and outer large-scale polar rings form a single family in the distribution of diameters normalized to the optical size of the galaxy. At the same time, this distribution is bimodal, as the number of objects with d_ring= (0.4-0.7)*d_disk is negligible. Such a shape of size distribution is most likely due to the fact that the stability of polar orbits in the inner regions of galaxies is maintained by the bulge or the bar, while in the outer regions it is provided by the spheroidal (or triaxial) halo.

Emission spectrum of ionized gas in the Irr galaxy Holmberg II

We study the ionized gas spectrum of star forming regions in the Holmberg II galaxy using the optical long-slit spectroscopic observations made at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). We estimate the oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, neon, and argon abundances in individual HII regions and find the average metallicity in the galaxy to be Z=0.1 or 0.3 Zsun depending on the estimation method employed. We use these observations combined with the results of our earlier studies of the Irr galaxy IC 10 and BCD galaxy VII Zw 403 to compare the currently most popular methods of gas metallicity estimation in order to select among them the techniques that are most reliable for analysing Irr galaxies. To this end, we use the "direct" Te method and six empirical and theoretical methods. The results of our observations mostly confirm the conclusions of Lopez-Sanchez et al. (2012) based on the analysis of systematic deviations of metallicity estimates derived by applying different methods to "model" HII regions.

Polar rings dynamics in the triaxial dark matter halo

Spectroscopic observations at the Russian 6-m telescope are used to study the two polar ring galaxies (PRGs) from the catalogue by Moiseev et al.: SPRC-7 and SPRC-260. We have analyzed the kinematics of the stellar component of the central galaxies as well as the ionized gas kinematics in the external ring structures. The disc-halo decomposition of rotation curves in two perpendicular directions are considered. The observed 2D velocity fields are compared with the model predictions for different dark halo shapes. Based on these data, we constrain that for potential of DM halo semiaxis ratios is $s=0.8$, $q=1$ for SPRC-7 and $s=0.95$, $q=1.1$ for SPRC-260. Using 3D hydrodynamic simulations we also study the dynamics and evolution of the polar component in the potential of the galactic disc and dark halo for these two galaxies. We show that the polar component is dynamically quasi-stable on the scale of $\sim10$ dynamical times (about a few Gyr). This is demonstrate the possibility for the growth of a spiral structure, which then steadily transforms to a lopsided gaseous system in the polar pane.

Inner Polar Rings and Disks: Observed Properties

A list of galaxies with inner regions revealing polar (or strongly inclined to the main galactic plane) disks and rings is compiled from the literature data. The list contains 47 galaxies of all morphological types, from E to Irr. We consider the statistics of the parameters of polar structures known from observations. The radii of the majority of them do not exceed 1.5 kpc. The polar structures are equally common in barred and unbarred galaxies. At the same time, if a galaxy has a bar (or a triaxial bulge), this leads to the polar disk stabilization - its axis of rotation usually coincides with the major axis of the bar. More than two thirds of all considered galaxies reveal one or another sign of recent interaction or merging. This fact indicates a direct relation between the external environment and the presence of an inner polar structure.

Kinematics and the origin of the internal structures in HL Tau jet (HH 151)

Knotty structures of Herbig-Haro jets are common phenomena, and knowing the origin of these structures is essential for understanding the processes of jet formation. Basically, there are two theoretical approaches: different types of instabilities in stationary flow, and velocity variations in the flow. We investigate the structures with different radial velocities in the knots of the HL Tau jet as well as its unusual behaviour starting from 20 arcsec from the source. Collation of radial velocity data with proper motion measurements of emission structures in the jet of HL Tau makes it possible to understand the origin of these structures and decide on the mechanism for the formation of the knotty structures in Herbig-Haro flows. We present observations obtained with a 6 m telescope (Russia) using the SCORPIO camera with scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. Two epochs of the observations of the HL/XZ Tau region in Halpha emission (2001 and 2007) allowed us to measure proper motions for high and low radial velocity structures. The structures with low and high radial velocities in the HL Tau jet show the same proper motion. The point where the HL Tau jet bents to the north (it coincides with the trailing edge of so-called knot A) is stationary, i.e. does not have any perceptible proper motion and is visible in Halpha emission only. We conclude that the high- and low- velocity structures in the HL Tau jet represent bow-shocks and Mach disks in the internal working surfaces of episodic outflows. The bend of the jet and the brightness increase starting some distance from the source coincides with the observed stationary deflecting shock. The increase of relative surface brightness of bow-shocks could be the result of the abrupt change of the physical conditions of the ambient medium as well as the interaction of a highly collimated flow and the side wind from XZ Tau.

The origin of gas in the Extended Narrow Line Region of nearby Seyfert galaxies.I. NGC 7212

The Extended Narrow Line Region (ENLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is a region of highly ionized gas with a size of few up to 15-20 kpc. When it shows a conical or bi-conical shape with the apexes pointing towards the active nucleus, this region is also called ionization cones. The ionization cones are an evidence of the Unified Model that predicts an anisotropic escape of ionizing photons from the nucleus confined to a cone by a dusty torus. Many details about the complex structure of the ENLR still remain unveiled, as for example the origin of the ionized gas. Here we present new results of a study of the physical and kinematical properties of the circumnuclear gas in the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7212. Medium and high resolution integral field spectra and broad-band photometric data were collected and analysed in the frame of an observational campaign of nearby Seyfert galaxies, aiming to handle the complicated issue of the origin of the gas in the ENLR. This work is based on: (i) analysis of gas physical properties (density, temperature and metallicity), (ii) analysis of emission line ratios, and (iii) study of kinematics of gas and stars. By reconstructing the [O III]/Hbeta ionization map, we pointed out for the first time the presence of an ionization cone extended up to about 6 kpc, made by a large amount of low metallicity gas, kinematically disturbed and decoupled from stars, whose highly ionized component shows radial motions at multiple velocities proved by the complex profiles of the specral lines. Since NGC 7212 is a strongly interacting triple galaxy system, the gravitational effects are likely to be at the origin of the ENLR in this Seyfert galaxy.

Gas motions mapping for three Seyfert galaxies

We report preliminary results of a kinematical study for three Seyfert galaxies selected from a sample of nearby active galactic nuclei observed using 3D spectroscopy. The observations were performed at the prime focus of the SAO RAS 6-m telescope with the integral-field spectrograph MPFS and with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, installed on the multimode device SCORPIO. Based on these data, the monochromatic maps and velocity fields in different emission lines were constructed. We have detected a nuclear outflow or ionized gas motions associated with a radio jet in all galaxies circumnuclear regions.

Ionized Gas in the Irr Galaxy IC 10: The Emission Spectrum and Ionization Sources

We present the results of observations of the Irr galaxy IC 10 at the 6-m SAO telescope with the panoramic Multi-Pupil Fiber Spectrograph (MPFS). Based on the results of these observations and our long-slit spectroscopy performed previously, we have investigated the ionized-gas emission spectrum in the region of intense star formation and refined the gas metallicity estimates. We show that the "diagnostic diagrams" constructed from our observations agree best with the new improved ionization models by Martin-Manjon et al. Using these models, we have determined the electron density and gas ionization parameter and ionizing-cluster characteristics, the age and mass, from the spectra of the investigated HII regions. The cluster age and mass are shown to be within the ranges 2.5 - 5 Myr and (0.2 - 1)*10^5 M(sun), respectively.

Lenticular galaxies at the outskirts of the Leo II group: NGC 3599 and NGC 3626

We have studied unbarred S0 galaxies, NGC 3599 and NGC 3626, the members of the X-ray bright group Leo II, by means of 3D spectroscopy, long-slit spectroscopy, and imaging, with the aim to identify epoch and mechanismsof their transformation from spirals. Both galaxies have appeared to bear a complex of features resulting obviously from minor merging: decoupled gas kinematics, nuclear starforming rings, and multi-tiered oval large-scale stellar disks. The weak-emission line nucleus of NGC 3599 bears all signs of the Seyfert activity, according to the line-ratio diagnostics of the gas excitation mechanism. After all, we conclude that the transformation of these lenticular galaxies has had place about 1-2 Gyr ago, through the gravitational mechanisms not related to hot intragroup medium of Leo II.

Ionized gas and sources of its ionization in the Irr galaxy IC 10

IC 10 is the nearest starburst irregular galaxy remarkable for its anomalously high number of WR stars. We report the results of an analysis of the emission spectra of HII-regions ionized by star clusters and WR stars based on observations made with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using MPFS field spectrograph and SCORPIO focal reducer operating in the slit spectrograph mode. We determine the masses and ages of ionizing star clusters in the violent star-forming region of the galaxy in terms of the new evolutionary models of emission-line spectra of HII-regions developed by Martin-Manjon et al. (2010). We estimate the amount of stars needed to ionize the gas in the brightest HII-region HL 111 and report new determinations of oxygen abundance in HII regions.
