A synchrotron superbubble in the IC 10 Galaxy: a hypernova remnant?

The nature of the synchrotron superbubble in the IC 10 galaxy is discussed using the results of our investigation of its ionized gas structure, kinematics, and emission spectrum from observations made with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and based on our analysis of the radio emission of the region. The hypernova explosion is shown to be a more plausible mechanism of the formation of the synchrotron superbubble compared with the earlier proposed model of multiple supernova explosions. A compact remnant of this hypernova may be identified with the well known X-ray binary X-1 -- an accreting black hole.

Propagating Star Formation in the Collisional Ring Galaxy Arp 10

Propagating star formation in a collisional ring galaxy Arp10 is investigated by a complex approach, which includes the broad- and narrow-band photometry, long- slit spectroscopy, and scanning Fabry-Perot spectroscopy. The ionized gas velocity field obtained with best spatial resolution to date indicates a non- isotropic expansion of the outer ring with a maximum velocity 110km/s. Strong vertical and non-circular motions are also seen in the vicinity of the inner ring. Our kinematic data suggest that Arp10 has a small inclination i=22\degr and high total (luminous plus dark matter) mass of about $10^{12} M_{\odot}$ within a 50 kpc radius. The abundance of oxygen 12 + log(O/H) in both star- forming rings is about 8.6.The analysis of spectral indices provides an estimate on the propagation velocities of both rings and metallicity of the pre-collision stellar population.A small "knot" near the nucleus of Arp10,which was previously suspected as a possible candidate for collision, is now unambiguously identified as the "intruder" of at least 1/4 of the total mass of Arp~10.We use a simplified two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling of galaxy collisions to test a collisional origin of Arp10. We confirm that the sizes of the inner and outer rings, maximum expansion velocity of the outer ring, and radial profile of the gas circular velocity can be reproduced by a near-central collision with the intruder galaxy, which occurred approximately 85Myr ago. We acknowledge that an apparent crescent- shaped distribution of H$α$ emission in the outer ring is caused by a star formation threshold in the gas disk of Arp10.

The gas kinematics in Mrk 533 nucleus and circumnuclear region: a gaseous outflow

We present an analysis of 3D spectra of Mrk 533, observed with the integral-field spectrograph MPFS and using the Fabry Perot Interferometer (FPI) of the SAO RAS 6-m telescope. We found emissions of gas from the active Sy 2 nucleus in the centre and also from the HII regions in a spiral structure and a circumnuclear region. The gas kinematics shows regular non-circular motions in the wide range of galactocentric distances from 500 pc up to 15 kpc. The maps of inward and outward radial motions of the ionized gas was constructed. We found that the narrow line region (NLR) is composed of at least two (probably three) kinematically separated regions. We detect a stratification in the NLR of Mrk 533 with the outflow velocity ranging from 20-50 km/s to 600-700 km/s, respectively, on the radial distances of ~2.5 and ~1.5 kpc. The maximal outflow velocity comes from the nucleus and corresponds to the position of the observed radio structure, which is assumed to be created in an approaching jet. We suggest that these ionized gas outflows are triggered by the radio jet intrusion in an ambient medium.

Formation of Ionization-Cone Structures in Active Galactic Nuclei: I. Stationary Model and Linear Stability Analysis

We discuss causes of the formation of the observed kinematics and morphology of cones of ionized matter in the neighborhood of the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies. The results of linear stability analysis of an optically thin conic jet where radiation cooling and gravity play an important part are reported. The allowance for radiation cooling is shown to result in strong damping of all acoustic modes and to have insignificant effect on unstable surface Kelvin--Helmholtz modes. In the case of waveguide--resonance internal gravity modes radiative cooling suppresses completely the instability of waves propagating away from the ejection source and, vice versa, reduces substantially the growth time scale of unstable sourceward propagating modes. The results obtained can be used to study ionization cones in Seyfert galaxies with radio jets. In particular, our analysis shows that surface Kelvin--Helmholtz modes and volume harmonics are capable of producing regular features observed in optical emission-line images of such galaxies.

Formation of Ionization-Cone Structures in Active Galactic Nuclei: II. Nonlinear Hydrodynamic Modelling

In Part I of this paper we described an equilibrium model of a jet in the gravitational field corresponding to the rigid-rotation region of the galactic disk. We used linear stability analysis to find the waveguide-resonance instability of internal gravity waves due to the superreflection of these waves from the jet boundary. In this part of the paper, we perform nonlinear numerical 2D and 3D simulations of the development of this instability. We show that the shocks produced by this instability in the ambient medium of the jet are localized inside a cone with a large opening angle and are capable of producing features that are morphologically similar to those observed in galaxies with active nuclei (NGC 5252 for example).

Metallicity and age gradients in round elliptical galaxies

We probe the stellar population age and metallicity distributions in nearby elliptical galaxies over the largest extension to date. Long-slit spectroscopy is made by using the spectrograph SCORPIO of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciencies. The Lick indices H-beta, Mg b, Fe5270, and Fe5335 are calculated along the slit up to radii of 1.3 to 3r_e in 4 galaxies and up to 0.5r_e in the fifth one. The comparison with evolutionary synthesis models of simple stellar populations allows us to disentangle age and metallicity and to measure both. We have found that the mean stellar age is constant along the radius only in one galaxy out of 5. The other 4 galaxies demonstrate quite different behaviour of the mean stellar age: the outer parts are older than the centres in 3 cases and younger - in one case. The metallicity gradients cannot be approximated by a single power law over the full radial extension in 4 galaxies of 5. The inner metallicity gradients within 0.5r_e are all rather steep, steeper than -0.4 metallicity dex per radius dex, and are inconsistent with the origin of the elliptical galaxies by a major merger.

Observational evidence for AGN fueling. I. The merging of NGC6104 with a companion

We investigate in details the kinematics and morphology of the Seyfert galaxy NGC6104 in order to identify the mechanism of gas transportation to the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Our observational data were obtained at the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope with the MPFS integral-field spectrograph and the SCORPIO universal device in three modes: direct imaging, a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, and long-slit spectroscopy. Images from the HST archive were invoked to study the structure of the circumnuclear region. An analysis of deep images has revealed that NGC6104 is in the phase of active merging with a companion galaxy. We have been able to study the detailed picture of ionized gas motions up to galactocentric distances of 14 kpc and to construct the stellar velocity field for the inner region. The radial gas motions toward the AGN along the central bar play a significant role at galactocentric distances of 1-5 kpc. In addition, we have detected an outflow of ionized gas from the nucleus that presumably resulted from the intrusion of a radio jet into the ambient interstellar medium. Using diagnostic diagrams, we estimate the contributions from the AGN and star formation to the galactic gas ionization. We estimate the bar pattern speed by the Tremaine-Weinberg method and show that the inner ring observed in the galactic images has a resonant nature. Two possible ring formation scenarios (before and during the interaction with a companion) are discussed.

Structure and Kinematics of the Interstellar Medium in the Star-Forming Region in the BCD Galaxy VIIZw403 (UGC6456)

The structure and kinematics of ionized gas in the star-forming region in the BCD galaxy VIIZw403 (UGC6456) are analyzed using observations with the SCORPIO focal reducer on the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope in three modes: direct imaging (in the H-alpha, [OIII], and [SII] lines), long-slit spectroscopy, and spectroscopy with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. In addition to the previously known bright HII regions and the faint giant ring that surrounds the entire star-forming region, many new faint diffuse and arc structures have been detected. Fine structure of the giant ring has been revealed. We do not confirm the previously detected expansion of the bright shells around young stellar associations with a velocity of 50-70 km/s. We have estimated their expansion velocities to be no higher than 15-20 km/s; the corresponding kinematic age, no younger than 3-4 Myr, agrees well with the age of the compact OB associations related to them. We associate the faint extended filamentary and diffuse regions of ionized gas identified in nearly the entire central region of the galaxy and the giant HII ring with the older (10 Myr) stellar population of the most recent starburst. Weak high-velocity [OIII] and H-alpha line wings (up to 300 km/s from the line center) have been detected in the brightest HII region. Such velocities have been observed in the galaxy for the first time. The previously published H-alpha luminosity measurements for the galaxy are refined.

Internal Kinematics of Galaxies: 3D Spectroscopy on Russian 6m Telescope

We have considered some results concerning gas and stars kinematics of nearby galaxies recently obtained on the SAO RAS 6m telescope using the panoramic spectroscopy methods. The circumnuclear regions of the galaxies were observed with integral-field spectrograph MPFS. The large-scale ionized gas kinematics was studied with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) in the multi-mode focal reducer SCORPIO. The main attention is given for kinematically decoupled regions in the galaxies: bars, spirals, polar disks and rings.

Nature of nuclear rings in unbarred galaxies: NGC 7742 and NGC 7217

We have studied the unbarred Sb galaxy with a nuclear star-forming ring, NGC 7742, by means of 2D spectroscopy, long-slit spectroscopy, and imaging, and have compared the results with the properties of another galaxy of this type, NGC 7217, which is studied by us earlier. Both galaxies have many peculiar features in common: each has two global exponential stellar disks with different scalelengths, each possesses a circumnuclear inclined gaseous disk with a radius of 300 pc, and each has a global counterrotating subsystem, gaseous one in NGC 7742 and stellar one in NGC 7217. We suggest that past minor merger is the probable cause of all these peculiarities, including appearance of the nuclear star-forming rings without global bars; the rings might be produced as resonance features by tidally induced oval distortions of the global stellar disks.

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of the stellar velocity dispersions and the rotation curves we have constructed equilibrium models for the galactic disks in each galaxy and analyzed the dynamics of the spiral perturbations using linear global modal analysis and nonlinear hydrodynamical simulations. The theory reproduces qualitatively the observed properties of the spiral arms in the galactic disks. Namely the theory predicts observed grand-design spiral structure in the galaxy NGC 1566, the tightly-wound spirals in galaxies NGC 488 and NGC 2985, the two-armed spiral pattern with the third spiral arm in the galaxy NGC 628, and the multi-armed spiral structure in the galaxies NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. In general, more massive disks are dominated by two-armed spiral modes. Disks with lower mass, and with lower velocity dispersion are simultaneously unstable for spiral modes with different numbers of arms, which results in a more complicated pattern.

New Studies of the Pulsar Wind Nebula in the Supernova Remnant CTB 80

We investigated the kinematics of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) associated with PSR B1951+32 in the old supernova remnant CTB 80 using the Fabry-Perot interferometer of the 6m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. In addition to the previously known expansion of the system of bright filaments with a velocity of 100-200km/s, we detected weak high-velocity features in the H-alpha line at least up to velocities of 400-450km/s. We analyzed the morphology of the PWN in the H-alpha, [SII], and [OIII] lines using HST data and discuss its nature. The shape of the central filamentary shell, which is determined by the emission in the [OIII] line and in the radio continuum, is shown to be consistent with the bow-shock model for a significant (about 60 degrees) inclination of the pulsar's velocity vector to the plane of the sky. In this case, the space velocity of the pulsar is twice higher than its tangential velocity, i.e., it reaches ~500 km/s, and PSR B1951+32 is the first pulsar whose line-of-sight velocity (of about 400 km/s) has been estimated from the PWN observations. The shell-like H-alpha-structures outside the bow shock front in the east and the west may be associated with both the pulsar's jets and the pulsar-wind breakthrough due to the layered structure of the extended CTB 80 shell.

New photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315

We present new important results about the intermediate-type Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315, recently observed through optical imaging and integral-field spectroscopy. Broad-band images were used to study the morphology of the host galaxy, narrow-band H-alpha images to trace the star forming regions, and middle-band [O III] images to evidence the distribution of the highly ionised gas. Some extended emission regions were isolated and their physical properties studied by means of flux calibrated spectra. High resolution spectroscopy was used to separate different kinematic components in the velocity fields of gas and stars. Some peculiar features characterise this apparently undisturbed and moderately isolated active galaxy. Such features, already investigated by other authors, are re-analysed and discussed in the light of these new observations. The most relevant results we obtained are: the multi-tiers structure of the disc; the presence of a quasi-ring of regions with star formation much higher than previous claims; a secondary nucleus confirmed by a stellar component kinematically decoupled by the main galaxy; a new hypothesis about the controversial nature of the long filament, initially described as hook-shaped, and more likely made of two independent filaments caused by interaction events between the main galaxy and two dwarf companions.

The SCORPIO focal reducer

We describe the SCORPIO focal reducer that has been used since the fall of 2000 for observations on the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. We give parameters of the instrument in various observing modes (direct images, long-slit and multislit spectroscopy, spectropolarimetry, Fabry-Perot panoramic spectroscopy). Observations of various astronomical objects are used as examples to demonstrate the SCORPIO capabilities.

Long-slit and Fabry-Perot spectroscopy of collisional ring galaxy Arp 10

We present results of Fabry-Perot and long-slit spectroscopy of the peculiar galaxy Arp 10. The ionized gas velocity field shows evidence for significant radial motions in both outer and inner galactic rings. Long-slit spectroscopy reveals gradients of age and metallicity of stellar population in agreement with the propagating nature of star formation in the galaxy. We present strong evidence that a small ``knot'' at 5 arcsec from the center of Arp 10 is its dwarf elliptic satellite, the most probable ``intruder'' responsible for triggering the expanding rings in Arp 10.

NGC 7468: a galaxy with an inner polar disk

We present our spectroscopic observations of the galaxy NGC 7468 performed at the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope using the UAGS long-slit spectrograph, the multipupil fiber spectrograph MPFS, and the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (IFP). We found no significant deviations from the circular rotation of the galactic disk in the velocity field in the regions of brightness excess along the major axis of the galaxy (the putative polar ring). Thus, these features are either tidal structures or weakly developed spiral arms. However, we detected a gaseous disk at the center of the galaxy whose rotation plane is almost perpendicular to the plane of the galactic disk. The central collision of NGC 7468 with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy and their subsequent merging seem to be responsible for the formation of this disk.

The orientation parameters and rotation curves of 15 spiral galaxies

We analyzed ionized gas motion and disk orientation parameters for 15 spiral galaxies. Their velocity fields were measured with the H-alpha emission line by using the Fabry-Perot interferometer at the 6m telescope of SAO RAS. Special attention is paid to the problem of estimating the position angle of the major axis (PA_0) and the inclination (i) of a disk, which strongly affect the derived circular rotation velocity. We discuss and compare different methods of obtaining these parameters from kinematic and photometric observations, taking into account the presence of regular velocity (brightness) perturbations caused by spiral density waves. It is shown that the commonly used method of tilted rings may lead to systematic errors in the estimation of orientation parameters (and hence of circular velocity) being applied to galaxies with an ordered spiral structure. Instead we recommend using an assumption of constancy of i and PA_0 along a radius, to estimate these parameters. For each galaxy of our sample we present monochromatic H-alpha- and continuum maps, velocity fields of ionized gas, and the mean rotation curves in the frame of a model of pure circular gas motion. Significant deviations from circular motion with amplitudes of several tens of km/s (or higher) are found in almost all galaxies. The character and possible nature of the non-circular motion are briefly discussed.

Structure and kinematics of candidate double-barred galaxies

Results of optical and NIR spectral and photometric observations of a sample of candidate double-barred galaxies are presented. Velocity fields and velocity dispersion maps of stars and ionized gas, continuum and emission-line images were constructed from integral-field spectroscopy observations carried out at the 6m telescope (BTA) of SAO RAS, with the MPFS spectrograph and the scanning Fabry-Perot Interferometer. NGC2681 was also observed with the long-slit spectrograph of the BTA. Optical and NIR images were obtained at the BTA and at the 2.1m telescope (OAN, México). High-resolution images were retrieved from the HST data archive. Morphological and kinematic features of all 13 sample objects are described in detail. Attention is focused on the interpretation of observed non-circular motions of gas and stars in circumnuclear (one kiloparsec- scale) regions. We have shown first of all that these motions are caused by the gravitational potential of a large-scale bar. NGC3368 and NGC3786 have nuclear bars only, their isophotal twist at larger radii being connected with the bright spiral arms. Three cases of inner polar disks in our sample (NGC2681, NGC3368 and NGC5850) are considered. We found ionized-gas counter-rotation in the central kiloparsec of the lenticular galaxy NGC3945. Seven galaxies (NGC470, NGC2273, NGC2681, NGC3945, NGC5566, NGC5905, and NGC6951) have inner mini-disks nested in large-scale bars. Minispiral structures occur often in these nuclear disks. It is interesting that the majority of the observed, morphological and kinematical, features in the sample galaxies can be explained without the secondary bar hypothesis. Thus we suggest that a dynamically independent secondary bar is a rarer phenomenon than follows from isophotal analysis of the images only.
