Direct determination of the excitation energy of quasi-stable isomer $^{180m}$Ta

$^{180m}$Ta is a naturally abundant quasi-stable nuclide and the longest-lived nuclear isomer known to date. It is of interest for, among others, the search for dark matter, for the development of a gamma laser and for astrophysics. So far, its excitation energy has not been measured directly but has been based on an evaluation of available nuclear reaction data. We have determined the excitation energy of this isomer with high accuracy using the Penning-trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. The determined mass difference between the ground and isomeric states of $^{180}$Ta yields an excitation energy of 76.79(55) keV for $^{180m}$Ta. This is the first direct measurement of the excitation energy and provides a better accuracy than the previous evaluation value, 75.3(14) keV.

Mu2e-II: Muon to electron conversion with PIP-II

An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Mu2e-II may be regarded as the next logical step in a continued high-intensity muon program at FNAL.

Exact transparent boundary condition for the multidimensional Schrödinger equation in hyperrectangular computational domain

In this paper an exact transparent boundary condition (TBC) for the multidimensional Schrödinger equation in a hyperrectangular computational domain is proposed. It is derived as a generalization of exact transparent boundary conditions for 2D and 3D equations reported before. A new exact fully discrete (i.e. derived directly from the finite-difference scheme used) 1D transparent boundary condition is also proposed. Several numerical experiments using an improved unconditionally stable numerical implementation in the 3D space demonstrate propagation of Gaussian wave packets in free space and penetration of a particle through a 3D spherically asymmetrical barrier. The application of the multidimensional transparent boundary condition to the dynamics of the 2D system of two non-interacting particles is considered. The proposed boundary condition is simple, robust and can be useful in the field of computational quantum mechanics, when an exact solution of the multidimensional Schrödinger equation (including multi-particle problems) is required.

Measurement of the $K^+\rightarrow{μ^+}{ν_μ}γ$ decay form factors in the OKA experiment

A precise measurement of the vector and axial-vector form factors difference $F_V-F_A$ in the $K^+\rightarrow{μ^+}{ν_μ}γ$ decay is presented. About 95K events of $K^+\rightarrow{μ^+}{ν_μ}γ$ are selected in the OKA experiment. The result is $F_V-F_A=0.134\pm0.021(stat)\pm0.027(syst)$. Both errors are smaller than in the previous $F_V-F_A$ measurements.

Study of the decay $K^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}γ$ in the OKA experiment

A high statistics data sample of the decays of $K^+$ mesons to three charged particles was accumulated by the OKA experiment in 2012 and 2013. This allowed to select a clean sample of about 450 events with $K^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}γ$ decays with the energy of the photon in the kaon rest frame greater than 30 MeV. The measured branching fraction of the $K^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}γ$, with $E_γ^{*}$ > 30 MeV is $(0.71 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-5}$. The measured energy spectrum of the decay photon is compared with the prediction of the chiral perturbation theory to O$(p^{4})$. A search for an up-down asymmetry of the photon with respect to the hadronic system decay plane is also performed.

Search for heavy neutrino in $K^{+} \to μ^{+} ν_{H}$ decay

A high statistics data sample of the $K^{+}\toμ^{+}ν_μ$ decay was accumulated by the OKA experiment in 2012. The missing mass analysis was performed to search for the decay channel $K^{+}\toμ^{+}ν_{H}$ with a hypothetic stable heavy neutrino in the final state. The obtained missing mass spectrum does not show peaks which could be attributed to existence of stable heavy neutrinos in the mass range (220 $< m_{ν_{H}} <$ 375) MeV$/c^{2}$. As a result, we obtain upper limits on the branching ratio and on the value of the mixing element $|U_{μH}|^{2}$.

$K_{e3}$ decay studies in OKA experiment

Recent results from OKA setup concerning form factor studies in $K_{e3}$ decay are presented. About 5.25M events are selected for the analysis. The linear and quadratic slopes for the decay formfactor $f_{+}(t)$ are measured: $λ'_{+}=(26.1 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.28 )\times 10^{-3}$, $λ"_{+}=(1.91 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$. The scalar and tensor contributions are compatible with zero. Several alternative parametrizations are tried: the Pole fit parameter is found to be $M_V = 891 \pm 2.0$ MeV ; the parameter of the Dispersive parametrization is measured to be $Λ_+ =(24.58 \pm 0.18) \times 10^{-3}$. The presented results are considered as preliminary.

Exact transparent boundary conditions for the parabolic wave equations with linear and quadratic potentials

In this paper exact 1D transparent boundary conditions (TBC) for the 2D parabolic wave equation with a linear or a quadratic dependence of the dielectric permittivity on the transversal coordinate are reported. Unlike the previously derived TBCs they contain only elementary functions. The obtained boundary conditions can be used to numerically solve the 2D parabolic equation describing the propagation of light in weakly bent optical waveguides and fibers including waveguides with variable curvature. They also are useful when solving the equivalent 1D Schrödinger equation with a potential depending linearly or quadratically on the coordinate. The prospects and problems of discretization of the derived transparent boundary conditions are discussed.

Computer simulation of electronic excitations in beryllium

An effective method for the quantitative description of the electronic excited states of polyatomic systems is developed by using computer technology. The proposed method allows calculating various properties of matter at the atomic level within the uniform scheme. A special attention is paid to the description of beryllium atoms interactions with the external fields, comparable by power to the fields in atoms, molecules and clusters.

Shape of the inflaton potential and the efficiency of the universe heating

It is shown that the efficiency of the universe heating by an inflaton field depends not only on the possible presence of parametric resonance in the production of scalar particles but also strongly depends on the character of the inflaton approach to its mechanical equilibrium point. In particular, when the inflaton oscillations deviate from pure harmonic ones toward a succession of step functions, the production probability rises by several orders of magnitude. This in turn leads to a much higher temperature of the universe after the inflaton decay, in comparison to the harmonic case. An example of the inflaton potential is presented which creates a proper modification of the evolution of the inflaton toward equilibrium and does not destroy the nice features of inflation.

A separation of electrons and protons in the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope

The GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope is intended to measure the fluxes of gamma rays and cosmic-ray electrons and positrons in the energy range from 100 MeV to several TeV. Such measurements concern with the following scientific goals: search for signatures of dark matter, investigation of gamma-ray point and extended sources, studies of the energy spectra of Galactic and extragalactic diffuse emission, studies of gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray emission from the active Sun, as well as high-precision measurements of spectra of high-energy electrons and positrons, protons, and nuclei up to the knee. The main components of cosmic rays are protons and helium nuclei, whereas the part of lepton component in the total flux is ~10E-3 for high energies. In present paper, the capability of the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope to distinguish electrons and positrons from protons in cosmic rays is investigated. The individual contribution to the proton rejection is studied for each detector system of the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope. Using combined information from all detector systems allow us to provide the proton rejection from electrons with a factor of ~4x10E5 for vertical incident particles and ~3x10E5 for particles with initial inclination of 30 degrees. The calculations were performed for the electron energy range from 50 GeV to 1 TeV.

The GAMMA-400 Space Mission

GAMMA-400 is a new space mission which will be installed on board the Russian space platform Navigator. It is scheduled to be launched at the beginning of the next decade. GAMMA-400 is designed to study simultaneously gamma rays (up to 3 TeV) and cosmic rays (electrons and positrons from 1 GeV to 20 TeV, nuclei up to 10$^{15}$-10$^{16}$ eV). Being a dual-purpose mission, GAMMA-400 will be able to address some of the most impelling science topics, such as search for signatures of dark matter, cosmic-rays origin and propagation, and the nature of transients. GAMMA-400 will try to solve the unanswered questions on these topics by high-precision measurements of the Galactic and extragalactic gamma-ray sources, Galactic and extragalactic diffuse emission and the spectra of cosmic-ray electrons + positrons and nuclei, thanks to excellent energy and angular resolutions.

The GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope characteristics. Angular resolution and electrons/protons separation

The measurements of gamma-ray fluxes and cosmic-ray electrons and positrons in the energy range from 100 MeV to several TeV, which will be implemented by the specially designed GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope, concern with the following broad range of science topics. Searching for signatures of dark matter, surveying the celestial sphere in order to study gamma-ray point and extended sources, measuring the energy spectra of Galactic and extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray emission, studying gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray emission from the Sun, as well as high precision measuring spectra of high-energy electrons and positrons, protons and nuclei up to the knee. To clarify these scientific problems with the new experimental data the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope possesses unique physical characteristics comparing with previous and present experiments. For gamma-ray energies more than 100 GeV GAMMA-400 provides the energy resolution of ~1% and angular resolution better than 0.02 deg. The methods developed to reconstruct the direction of incident gamma photon are presented in this paper, as well as, the capability of the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope to distinguish electrons and positrons from protons in cosmic rays is investigated.

Mass measurements in the vicinity of the rp-process and the nu p-process paths with JYFLTRAP and SHIPTRAP

The masses of very neutron-deficient nuclides close to the astrophysical rp- and nu p-process paths have been determined with the Penning trap facilities JYFLTRAP at JYFL/Jyväskylä and SHIPTRAP at GSI/Darmstadt. Isotopes from yttrium (Z = 39) to palladium (Z = 46) have been produced in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. In total 21 nuclides were studied and almost half of the mass values were experimentally determined for the first time: 88Tc, 90-92Ru, 92-94Rh, and 94,95Pd. For the 95Pdm, (21/2^+) high-spin state, a first direct mass determination was performed. Relative mass uncertainties of typically $δm / m = 5 \times 10^{-8}$ were obtained. The impact of the new mass values has been studied in nu p-process nucleosynthesis calculations. The resulting reaction flow and the final abundances are compared to those obtained with the data of the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003.

Spectrum structure for a three-dimensional periodic array of quantum dots in a uniform magnetic field

By means of the operator extension theory, we construct an explicitly solvable model of a simple-cubic three-dimensional regimented array of quantum dots in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The spectral properties of the model are studied. It is proved that for each magnetic flux the band is the image of the spectrum of the tight-binding operator under an analytical transformation. In the case of rational magnetic flux the spectrum is described analytically. The flux-energy and angle-energy diagrams are obtained numerically.

Elliptic flow orientation, saturation and low $p_t$ behavior

We consider general model with factorization between macroscopic flow and matter decay distribution. We show universality of $p_t^2$ behavior of elliptic flow at small $p_t$ for identified final particles in the symmetric nucleus collision. At high $p_t$ we compare non-relativistic and relativistic models for boosted decay distribution. In the relativistic models with distribution having power-like tail we show existence of elliptic flow saturation. This means that the elliptic flow value $v_2$ tend to constant at high $p_t$. We discuss the importance of determination of elliptic flow orientation which can help us to compare different models. For example, we introduce potential expansion model which can reproduce azimuthal asymmetry but based on the assumption that there are only cold strong forces and no thermalization. This model show opposite sign of elliptic flow orientation in comparison with thermal model. We also show that at small $p_t$ sign of elliptic flow can change due to sign of second derivative of decay distribution. This fact tell us that we must more carefully link elliptic flow sign and properties of the model.
