Weak Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

We extend the analysis of the deeply virtual Compton scattering process to the weak interaction sector in the generalized Bjorken limit. The virtual Compton scattering amplitudes for the weak neutral and charged currents are calculated at the leading twist within the framework of the nonlocal light-cone expansion via coordinate space QCD string operators. Using a simple model, we estimate cross sections for neutrino scattering off the nucleon, relevant for future high intensity neutrino beam facilities.

Light Cone Sum Rules for gamma* N -> Delta Transition Form Factors

A theoretical framework is suggested for the calculation of gamma* N -> Delta transition form factors using the light-cone sum rule approach. Leading-order sum rules are derived and compared with the existing experimental data. We find that the transition form factors in a several GeV region are dominated by the ``soft'' contributions that can be thought of as overlap integrals of the valence components of the hadron wave functions. The ``minus'' components of the quark fields contribute significantly to the result, which can be reinterpreted as large contributions of the quark orbital angular momentum

Unraveling hadron structure with generalized parton distributions

The generalized parton distributions, introduced nearly a decade ago, have emerged as a universal tool to describe hadrons in terms of quark and gluonic degrees of freedom. They combine the features of form factors, parton densities and distribution amplitudes--the functions used for a long time in studies of hadronic structure. Generalized parton distributions are analogous to the phase-space Wigner quasi-probability function of non-relativistic quantum mechanics which encodes full information on a quantum-mechanical system. We give an extensive review of main achievements in the development of this formalism. We discuss physical interpretation and basic properties of generalized parton distributions, their modeling and QCD evolution in the leading and next-to-leading orders. We describe how these functions enter a wide class of exclusive reactions, such as electro- and photo-production of photons, lepton pairs, or mesons. The theory of these processes requires and implies full control over diverse corrections and thus we outline the progress in handling higher-order and higher-twist effects. We catalogue corresponding results and present diverse techniques for their derivations. Subsequently, we address observables that are sensitive to different characteristics of the nucleon structure in terms of generalized parton distributions. The ultimate goal of the GPD approach is to provide a three-dimensional spatial picture of the nucleon, direct measurement of the quark orbital angular momentum, and various inter- and multi-parton correlations.

Deep Elastic Processes of Composite Particles in Field Theory and Asymptotic Freedom

This is an English translation of my 1977 Russian preprint. It contains the first explicit definition of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), the expression for the pion form factor asymptotics in terms of the pion DA, and formulates the pQCD parton picture for hard exclusive processes. Abstract of the original paper: The large Q^2 behavior of the pion electromagnetic form factor is explicitly calculated in the non-Abelian gauge theory to demonstrate a field-theoretical approach to the deep elastic processes of composite particles. The approach is equivalent to a new type of parton model.

Exclusive annihilation p pbar -> gamma gamma in a generalized parton picture

Exclusive proton-antiproton annihilation into two photons at large s (~10 GeV^2) and |t|,|u| ~ s can be described by a generalized parton picture analogous to the 'soft mechanism' in wide-angle real Compton scattering. The two photons are emitted in the annihilation of a single fast quark and antiquark. The matrix element describing the transition of the p-pbar system to a q-qbar pair can be related to the timelike proton elastic form factors as well as to the quark/antiquark distributions measured in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The reaction could be studied with the proposed 1.5-15 GeV high-luminosity antiproton storage ring (HESR) at GSI.

QCD Calculations of Pion Electromagnetic and Transition Form Factors

A short review is given of calculations of the pion electromagnetic and transition form factors within the framework of quantum chromodynamics. It is argued that both the perturbative and nonperturbative aspects of the Q^2 dependence of these form factors are rather well understood in QCD. However, new experimental data at higher Q^2 would be extremely helpful for detailed tests of the transition to the regime where the pQCD hard contribution plays the dominant role.

Kinematical twist-3 effects in DVCS as a quark spin rotation

We point out that the kinematical twist-3 contributions to the DVCS amplitude, required to restore electromagnetic gauge invariance of the twist-2 amplitude up to O(t/q^2), can be understood as a spin rotation applied to the twist-2 quark density matrix in the target. This allows for a compact representation of the twist-3 effects, as well as for a simple physical interpretation.

Introduction to QCD Sum Rule Approach

In these lectures, I describe the techniques used within the QCD sum rule approach. The basic concepts of the approach are introduced using a simple model of quantum-mechanical oscillator in 2+1 dimensions. Then I discuss their field-theoretical extension and the construction of the operator product expansion for current correlators in QCD. The calculation of static parameters is illustrated on the example of sum rules in the vector and axial meson channels. Finally, the QCD sum rule calculation of the pion electromagnetic form factor is presented as an example of application of the method to dynamic characteristics of the hadrons.

Generalized Parton Distributions

Applications of perturbative QCD to deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard exclusive electroproduction processes require a generalization of the usual parton distributions for the case when long-distance information is accumulated in nondiagonal matrix elements of quark and gluon light-cone operators. I describe two types of nonperturbative functions parametrizing such matrix elements: double distributions and skewed parton distributions. I discuss their general properties, relation to the usual parton densities and form factors, evolution equations for both types of generalized parton distributions (GPD), models for GPDs and their applications in virtual and real Compton scattering.

Skewed Parton Distributions

Applications of perturbative QCD to deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard exclusive electroproduction processes require a generalization of usual parton distributions for the case when long-distance information is accumulated in nonforward matrix elements of quark and gluon light-cone operators. We describe two types of nonperturbative functions parametrizing such matrix elements: double distributions F(x,y;t) and skewed distribution functions F_ζ(X;t), discuss their properties, and basic uses in the QCD description of hard exclusive processes.

DVCS amplitude at tree level: Transversality, twist-3, and factorization

We study the virtual Compton amplitude in the generalized Bjorken region (q^2 -> Infinity, t small) in QCD by means of a light-cone expansion of the product of e.m. currents in string operators in coordinate space. Electromagnetic gauge invariance (transversality) is maintained by including in addition to the twist-2 operators 'kinematical' twist-3 operators which appear as total derivatives of twist-2 operators. The non-forward matrix elements of the elementary twist-2 operators are parametrized in terms of two-variable spectral functions (double distributions), from which twist-2 and 3 skewed distributions are obtained through reduction formulas. Our approach is equivalent to a Wandzura-Wilczek type approximation for the twist-3 skewed distributions. The resulting Compton amplitude is manifestly transverse up to terms of order t/q^2. We find that in this approximation the tensor amplitude for longitudinal polarization of the virtual photon is finite, while the one for transverse polarization contains a divergence already at tree level. However, this divergence has zero projection on the polarization vector of the final photon, so that the physical helicity amplitudes are finite.

DVCS amplitude with kinematical twist-3 terms

We compute the amplitude of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) using the calculus of QCD string operators in coordinate representation. To restore the electromagnetic gauge invariance (transversality) of the twist-2 amplitude we include the operators of twist-3 which appear as total derivatives of twist-2 operators. Our results are equivalent to a Wandzura-Wilczek approximation for twist-3 skewed parton distributions. We find that this approximation gives a finite result for the amplitude of a longitudinally polarized virtual photon, while the amplitude for transverse polarization is divergent, i.e., factorization breaks down in this term. However, the divergent part has zero projection onto the polarization vector of the final real photon.

Form Factors and QCD in Spacelike and Timelike Region

We analyze the basic hard exclusive processes: πγ*γ- transition, pion and nucleon electromagnetic form factors, and discuss the analytic continuation of QCD formulas from the spacelike q^2<0 to the timelike region q^2 >0 of the relevant momentum transfers. We describe the construction of the timelike version of the coupling constant α_s. We show that due to the analytic continuation of the collinear logarithms each eigenfunction of the evolution equation acqiures a phase factor and investigate the resulting interference effects which are shown to be very small. We found no sources for the K-factor-type enhancements in the perturbative QCD contribution to the hadronic form factors. To study the soft part of the pion electromagnetic form factor, we use a QCD sum rule inspired model and show that there are non-canceling Sudakov double logarithms which result in a K-factor-type enhancement in the timelike region.

Evolution and models for skewed parton distributions

We discuss the structure of the ``forward visible'' (FW) parts of double and skewed distributions related to usual distributions through reduction relations. We use factorized models for double distributions (DDs) f(x, alpha) in which one factor coincides with the usual (forward) parton distribution and another specifies the profile characterizing the spread of the longitudinal momentum transfer. The model DDs are used to construct skewed parton distributions (SPDs). For small skewedness, the FW parts of SPDs H(x, xi) can be obtained by averaging forward parton densities f(x- xi alpha) with the weight rho (alpha) coinciding with the profile function of the double distribution f(x, alpha) at small x. We show that if the x^n moments f_n (alpha) of DDs have the asymptotic (1-alpha^2)^{n+1} profile, then the alpha-profile of f (x,alpha) for small x is completely determined by small-x behavior of the usual parton distribution. We demonstrate that, for small xi, the model with asymptotic profiles for f_n (alpha) is equivalent to that proposed recently by Shuvaev et al., in which the Gegenbauer moments of SPDs do not depend on xi. We perform a numerical investigation of the evolution patterns of SPDs and gave interpretation of the results of these studies within the formalism of double distributions.
