On the reduction of Feynman integrals to master integrals

The reduction of Feynman integrals to master integrals is an algebraic problem that requires algorithmic approaches at the modern level of calculations. Straightforward applications of the classical Buchberger algorithm to construct Groebner bases seem to be inefficient. An essential modification designed especially for this problem has been worked out. It has been already applied in two- and three-loop calculations. We are also suggesting to combine our method with the Laporta's algorithm.

Decoupling of heavy quarks in HQET

Decoupling of c-quark loops in b-quark HQET is considered. The decoupling coefficients for the HQET heavy-quark field and the heavy-light quark current are calculated with the three-loop accuracy. The last result can be used to improve the accuracy of extracting f_B from HQET lattice simulations (without c-quark loops). The decoupling coefficient for the flavour-nonsinglet QCD current with n antisymmetrized gamma-matrices is also obtained at three loops; the result for the tensor current (n=2) is new.

Regularization of fermion self-energy and electromagnetic vertex in Yukawa model within light-front dynamics

In light-front dynamics, the regularization of amplitudes by traditional cutoffs imposed on the transverse and longitudinal components of particle momenta corresponds to restricting the integration volume by a non-rotationally invariant domain. The result depends not only on the size of this domain (i.e., on the cutoff values), but also on its orientation determined by the position of the light-front plane. Explicitly covariant formulation of light front dynamics allows us to parameterize the latter dependence in a very transparent form. If we decompose the regularized amplitude in terms of independent invariant amplitudes, extra (non-physical) terms should appear, with spin structures which explicitly depend on the orientation of the light front plane. The number of form factors, i.e., the coefficients of this decomposition, therefore also increases. The spin-1/2 fermion self-energy is determined by three scalar functions, instead of the two standard ones, while for the elastic electromagnetic vertex the number of form factors increases from two to five. In the present paper we calculate perturbatively all these form factors in the Yukawa model. Then we compare the results obtained in the two following ways: (i) by using the light front dynamics graph technique rules directly; (ii) by integrating the corresponding Feynman amplitudes in terms of the light front variables. For each of these methods, we use two types of regularization: the transverse and longitudinal cutoffs, and the Pauli-Villars regularization. In the latter case, the dependence of amplitudes on the light front plane orientation vanishes completely provided enough Pauli-Villars subtractions are made.

Context-sensitive access to e-document corpus

The methodology of context-sensitive access to e-documents considers context as a problem model based on the knowledge extracted from the application domain, and presented in the form of application ontology. Efficient access to an information in the text form is needed. Wiki resources as a modern text format provides huge number of text in a semi formalized structure. At the first stage of the methodology, documents are indexed against the ontology representing macro-situation. The indexing method uses a topic tree as a middle layer between documents and the application ontology. At the second stage documents relevant to the current situation (the abstract and operational contexts) are identified and sorted by degree of relevance. Abstract context is a problem-oriented ontology-based model. Operational context is an instantiation of the abstract context with data provided by the information sources. The following parts of the methodology are described: (i) metrics for measuring similarity of e-documents to ontology, (ii) a document index storing results of indexing of e-documents against the ontology; (iii) a method for identification of relevant e-documents based on semantic similarity measures. Wikipedia (wiki resource) is used as a corpus of e-documents for approach evaluation in a case study. Text categorization, the presence of metadata, and an existence of a lot of articles related to different topics characterize the corpus.

S-bases as a tool to solve reduction problems for Feynman integrals

We suggest a mathematical definition of the notion of master integrals and present a brief review of algorithmic methods to solve reduction problems for Feynman integrals based on integration by parts relations. In particular, we discuss a recently suggested reduction algorithm which uses Groebner bases. New results obtained with its help for a family of three-loop Feynman integrals are outlined.

Applying Groebner Bases to Solve Reduction Problems for Feynman Integrals

We describe how Groebner bases can be used to solve the reduction problem for Feynman integrals, i.e. to construct an algorithm that provides the possibility to express a Feynman integral of a given family as a linear combination of some master integrals. Our approach is based on a generalized Buchberger algorithm for constructing Groebner-type bases associated with polynomials of shift operators. We illustrate it through various examples of reduction problems for families of one- and two-loop Feynman integrals. We also solve the reduction problem for a family of integrals contributing to the three-loop static quark potential.

Non-perturbative renormalization in Light Front Dynamics with Fock space truncation

Within the framework of the Covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, we develop a general non-perturbative renormalization scheme based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector and its truncation. The explicit dependence of our formalism on the orientation of the light front is essential in order to analyze the structure of the counterterms and bare parameters needed to renormalize the theory. We present here a general strategy to determine the dependence of these quantities on the Fock sectors. We apply our formalism to QED for the two-body (one fermion and one boson) truncation and recover analytically, without any perturbative expansion, the renormalization of the electric charge according to the requirements of the Ward Identity.

Importance of Thermal Disorder on the Properties of Alloys: Origin of Paramagnetism and Structural Anomalies in Iron-Aluminum

The bcc-based Fe_{1-x}Al_{x} exhibit interesting magnetic and anomalous structural properties as a function of composition and sample processing conditions arising from thermal or off-stoichiometric chemical disorder, and, although well studied, these properties are not understood. In stoichiometric B2 FeAl, including the effects of partial long-range order (i.e., thermal antisites), we find the observed paramagnetic response (with non-zero local moments), in contrast to past investigations which find ferromagnetism based on local density approximation (LDA) to density functional theory or which find a non-magnetic state from LDA+U, both of which are inconsistent with experiment. Moreover, from this magneto-chemical coupling, we are able to determine the origins of the lattice constant anomalies found in Fe_{1-x}Al_{x} for x=25-50, as observed from various processing conditions.

Renormalized nonperturbative fermion model in Covariant Light Front Dynamics

Within the framework of the covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, we develop a nonperturbative renormalization scheme in the fermion model supposing that the composite fermion is a superposition of the "bare" fermion and a fermion+boson state. We first assume the constituent boson to be spinless. Then we address the case of gauge bosons in the Feynman and in the Light-Cone gauges. For all these cases the fermion state vector and the necessary renormalization counterterms are calculated analytically. It turns out that in Light-Front Dynamics, to restore the rotational invariance, an extra counterterm is needed, having no any analogue in Feynman approach. For gauge bosons the results obtained in the two gauges are compared with each other. In general, the number of spin components of the two-body (fermion+boson) wave function depends on the gauge. But due to the two-body Fock space truncation, only one non-zero component survives for each gauge. And moreover, the whole solutions for the state vector, found for the Feynman and Light-Cone gauges, are the same (except for the normalization factor). The counterterms are however different

Deuteron Disintegration by Protons in Kinematics of Quasi-Elastic Backward pd-Scattering

The deuteron break-up exclusive reaction $p+d \to N(180^{\circ}) + (NN)(0^{\circ})$ is considered in the framework of the one-nucleon-exchange mechanism at the incident proton kinetic energy 0.2--2 GeV and the relative energy of nucleons in the forward going final NN-pair $E_{NN}=0$--20 MeV, that is close to the kinematical conditions of the planned experiment at COSY. The off-energy-shell effects resulting, in particular, in the node of the half-off-shell $^1S_0$-state partial NN-scattering amplitude and the role of higher partial waves in the subprocess $pN\to pN$ are analysed and found to be very important, especially for the reaction $p+d \to n(180^{\circ}) + (pp)(0^{\circ})$. The accuracy of some approximate relations between the cross sections of elastic $pd$-scattering and deuteron break-up is examined in the framework of the mechanism in question.

Step-induced unusual magnetic properties of ultrathin Co/Cu films: ab initio study

We have performed ab initio studies to elucidate the unusual magnetic behavior recently observed in epitaxial Co films upon absorption of submonolayers of Cu and other materials. We find that a submonolayer amount of Cu on a stepped Co/Cu (100) film changes dramatically the electronic and magnetic structure of the system. The effect is mainly due to hybridization of Co and Cu $d$-electrons when copper forms a ``wire'' next to a Co step at the surface. As a result, a non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments (switching of the easy axis) is promoted. [PACS 75.70.Ak,75.70.-i]

Non-collinear magnetism in Al-Mn topologically disordered systems

We have performed the first ab-initio calculations of a possible complex non-collinear magnetic structure in aluminium-rich Al-Mn liquids within the real-space tight-binding LMTO method. In our previous work we predicted the existence of large magnetic moments in Al-Mn liquids [A.M. Bratkovsky, A.V. Smirnov, D. N. Manh, and A. Pasturel, \prb {\bf 52}, 3056 (1995)] which has been very recently confirmed experimentally. Our present calculations show that there is a strong tendency for the moments on Mn to have a non-collinear (random) order retaining their large value of about 3~$μ_B$. The d-electrons on Mn demonstrate a pronounced non-rigid band behaviour which cannot be reproduced within a simple Stoner picture. The origin of the magnetism in these systems is a topological disorder which drives the moments formation and frustrates their directions in the liquid phase.
