Superconductivity and Magnetism in Noncentrosymmetric RhGe

RhGe synthesized at high pressure is crystallized in noncentrosymmetric cubic structure of the B20 type. Measurements of the electrical resistivity and magnetization demonstrate a superconducting state below T$_c$ ~ 4.5 K and a weak ferromagnetism below T$_m$ ~ 140 K. Specific heat data confirm the bulk nature of superconductivity in this ferromagnetic superconductor. The superconducting region forms a dome on the P-T diagram with a maximum of T$_c$ near 4 GPa. Ab initio simulations suggest that the observed weak magnetization emerges from the pronounced spin polarization with magnetic quadrupole and toroidal moments located at Rh and Ge sites.

Hyperfine field assessment of the magnetic structure of ZrZn2

Time differential perturbed angular gamma-gamma-correlation (TDPAC) method on 111Cd nuclei probes inserted in ZrZn1.9 is used to measure the magnetic hyperfine fields (MHF) at Zr and Zn sites and the electric field gradient (EFG) Vzz at Zn sites as a function of temperature at various pressures and as a function of pressure at the temperature 4 K. Our data indicate that the local magnetic moment of Zr in the magnetically ordered state is substantially larger than its value obtained from the macroscopic measurements and that there is also an induced magnetic moment at the Zn site. We conclude that ZrZn2 is not a simple ferromagnet and discuss a possible type of its magnetic ordering.

The gamma->alpha phase transition in cerium is not isostructural

Using a small amount of radioactive 111Cd atoms implanted in cerium lattice to probe the hyperfine electric quadrupole interaction, we have detected a quadrupole electron charge density component in alpha-Ce, which is absent in gamma-Ce. The appearance of the quadrupole density in alpha-Ce predicted by the quadrupole scenario of the phase transition demonstrates that the spacial symmetry is lowered at the gamma->alpha phase transition. This finding makes cerium the first element where the symmetry change is driven exclusively by the valence electron degrees of freedom while the atomic centers of mass (cerium nuclei) occupy the face centered cubic positions. We also report on nuclear quadrupole interactions in other high pressure phases of cerium: alpha' (C2/m space symmetry) and alpha' (alpha-U structure).

Interplay between magnetism and superconductivity and appearance of a second superconducting transition in alpha-FeSe at high pressure

We synthesized tetragonal alpha-FeSe by melting a powder mixture of iron and selenium at high pressure. Subsequent annealing at normal pressure results in removing traces of hexagonal beta- FeSe, formation of a rather sharp transition to superconducting state at Tc ~ 7 K, and the appearance of a magnetic transition near Tm = 120 K. Resistivity and ac-susceptibility were measured on the annealed sample at hydrostatic pressure up to 4.5 GPa. A magnetic transition visible in ac-susceptibility shifts down under pressure and the resistive anomaly typical for a spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic transition develops near the susceptibility anomaly. Tc determined by the appearance of a diamagnetic response in susceptibility, increases linearly under pressure at a rate dTc/dP = 3.5 K/GPa. Below 1.5 GPa, the resistive superconducting transition is sharp; the width of transition does not change with pressure; and, Tc determined by a peak in drho/dT increases at a rate ~ 3.5 K/GPa. At higher pressure, a giant broadening of the resistive transition develops. This effect cannot be explained by possible pressure gradients in the sample and is inherent to alpha-FeSe. The dependences drho(T)/dT show a signature for a second peak above 3 GPa which is indicative of the appearance of another superconducting state in alpha-FeSe at high pressure. We argue that this second superconducting phase coexists with SDW antiferromagnetism in a partial volume fraction and originates from pairing of charge carriers from other sheets of the Fermi surface.

111Cd- TDPAC study of pressure-induced valence transition in YbAl2

The quadrupole interaction at 111Cd impurity nuclei in the intermediate-valence compound YbAl2 has been measured under pressure up to 80 kbar by the TDPAC spectroscopy. It was found that the quadrupole frequency nQ measured on the 111Cd located at the Al sites in YbAl2, varies nonlinearly and increases by almost four times with the pressure increase up to 80 kbar. A linear correlation between the mean Yb valence, derived from Yb L3 OFY-XAS and RXES measurements, and the electric field gradient (the quadrupole frequency nQ=eQVzz/h) has been observed. The quadrupole frequencies on 111Cd in the GdAl2, YbAl3, TmAl3 and CaAl2 compounds have been measured, also. The possibility of determining the valence of Yb in the Yb compounds with p-metals from the relation nQ (u(P)) = n2 + (n3 - n2) u(P) has been considered.

Synthesis and Properties of YbB2

We report temperature and field dependent measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity of sintered YbB2 pellets, prepared via two distinct reaction routes, utilizing different temperatures, pressures and sintering times. Sample behavior is affected by the preparation procedure, as a consequence of different secondary phases, most of which were identified via x-ray diffraction. These experiments show that YbB2 is a metal with the Yb atoms in or very close to their 3+ state. YbB2 appears to order anti-ferromagnetically at TN ~ 5.6 K, which can be considered a relatively high ordering temperature for an ytterbium-based intermetallic compound.

Electric field gradients in MgB$_2$ synthesized at high pressure: $^111$Cd TDPAC study and ab initio calculation

We report the high-pressure synthesis of novel superconductor MgB$_2$ and some related compounds. The superconducting transition temperature of our samples of MgB$_2$ is equal to 36.6 K. The MgB$_2$ lattice parameters determined via X-ray diffraction are in excellent agreement with results of our ab initio calculations. The time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) experiments demonstrate a small increase in quadrupole frequency of $^111$Cd probe with decreasing temperature from 293 to 4.2 K. The electric field gradient (EFG) at the B site calculated from first principles is in fair agreement with EFG obtained from $^11$B NMR spectra of MgB$_2$ reported in the literature. It is also very close to EFG found in our $^111$Cd TDPAC measurements, which suggests that the $^111$Cd probe substitutes for boron in the MgB$_2$ lattice.
