Single State Supermultiplet in 1+1 Dimensions

We consider multiplet shortening for BPS solitons in N=1 two-dimensional models. Examples of the single-state multiplets were established previously in N=1 Landau-Ginzburg models. The shortening comes at a price of loosing the fermion parity $(-1)^F$ due to boundary effects. This implies the disappearance of the boson-fermion classification resulting in abnormal statistics. We discuss an appropriate index that counts such short multiplets. A broad class of hybrid models which extend the Landau-Ginzburg models to include a nonflat metric on the target space is considered. Our index turns out to be related to the index of the Dirac operator on the soliton reduced moduli space (the moduli space is reduced by factoring out the translational modulus). The index vanishes in most cases implying the absence of shortening. In particular, it vanishes when there are only two critical points on the compact target space and the reduced moduli space has nonvanishing dimension. We also generalize the anomaly in the central charge to take into account the target space metric.

Restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials

We study generating functions for the number of permutations in $\SS_n$ subject to two restrictions. One of the restrictions belongs to $\SS_3$, while the other to $\SS_k$. It turns out that in a large variety of cases the answer can be expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Counting Supershort Supermultiplets

We consider multiplet shortening for BPS solitons in N=1 two-dimensional models. Examples of the single-state multiplets were established previously in N=1 Landau-Ginzburg models. The shortening comes at a price of loosing the fermion parity $(-1)^F$ due to boundary effects. This implies the disappearance of the boson-fermion classification resulting in abnormal statistics. To count such short multiplets we introduce a new index. We consider the phenomenon of shortening in a broad class of hybrid models which extend the Landau-Ginzburg models to include a nonflat metric on the target space. Our index turns out to be related to the index of the Dirac operator on the soliton moduli space. The latter vanishes in most cases implying the absence of shortening. We also generalize the anomaly in the central charge to take into account the target space metric.

Type I Superconductivity upon Monopole Condensation in Seiberg-Witten Theory

We study the confinement scenario in N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory near the monopole point upon breaking of N=2 supersymmetry by the adjoint matter mass term. We confirm claims made previously that the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen string near the monopole point fails to be a BPS state once next-to-leading corrections in the adjoint mass parameter taken into account. Our results shows that type I superconductivity arises upon monopole condensation. This conclusion allows us to make qualitative predictions on the structure of the hadron mass spectrum near the monopole point.

Layered restrictions and Chebyshev polynomials

A permutation is called layered if it consists of the disjoint union of substrings (layers) so that the entries decrease within each layer, and increase between the layers. We find the generating function for the number of permutations on $n$ letters avoiding $(1,2,3)$ and a layered permutation on $k$ letters. In the most interesting case of two layers, the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Restricted 132-avoiding permutations

We study generating functions for the number of permutations on n letters avoiding 132 and an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on k letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on k and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Hurwitz numbers and intersections on moduli spaces of curves

This article is an extended version of preprint math.AG/9902104. We find an explicit formula for the number of topologically different ramified coverings of a sphere by a genus g surface with only one complicated branching point in terms of Hodge integrals over the moduli space of genus g curves with marked points.

Anomaly and quantum corrections to solitons in two-dimensional theories with minimal supersymmetry

We reexamine the issue of the soliton mass in two-dimensional models with N =1 supersymmetry. The superalgebra has a central extension, and at the classical level the soliton solution preserves 1/2 of supersymmetry which is equivalent to BPS saturation. We prove that the property of BPS saturation, i.e. the equality of the soliton mass to the central charge, remains intact at the quantum level in all orders of the weak coupling expansion. Our key finding is an anomaly in the expression for the central charge. The classical central charge, equal to the jump of the superpotential, is amended by an anomalous term proportional to the second derivative of the superpotential. The anomaly is established by various methods in explicit one-loop calculations. We argue that this one-loop result is not affected by higher orders. We discuss in detail how the impact of the boundary conditions can be untangled from the soliton mass calculation. In particular, the soliton profile and the energy distribution are found at one loop. A "supersymmetry" in the soliton mass calculations in the non-supersymmetric models is observed.

Deconfinement at the Argyres-Douglas point in SU(2) gauge theory with broken N=2 supersymmetry

We consider chiral condensates in SU(2) gauge theory with broken N=2 supersymmetry. The matter sector contains an adjoint multiplet and one fundamental flavor. Matter and gaugino condensates are determined by integrating out the adjoint field. The only nonperturbative input is the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg (ADS) superpotential generated by one instanton plus the Konishi anomaly. These results are consistent with those obtained by the `integrating in' procedure, including a reproduction of the Seiberg-Witten curve from the ADS superpotential. We then calculate monopole, dyon, and charge condensates using the Seiberg-Witten approach. We show that the monopole and charge condensates vanish at the Argyres-Douglas point where the monopole and charge vacua collide. We interpret this phenomenon as a deconfinement of electric and magnetic charges at the Argyres-Douglas point.

Restricted permutations, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials

Let f_n^r(k) be the number of 132-avoiding permutations on n letters that contain exactly r occurrences of 12... k, and let F_r(x;k) and F(x,y;k) be the generating functions defined by $F_r(x;k)=\sum_{n\gs0} f_n^r(k)x^n$ and $F(x,y;k)=\sum_{r\gs0}F_r(x;k)y^r$. We find an explcit expression for F(x,y;k) in the form of a continued fraction. This allows us to express F_r(x;k) for $1\ls r\ls k$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

The number of ramified coverings of the sphere by the torus and surfaces of higher genera

We obtain an explicit expression for the number of ramified coverings of the sphere by the torus with given ramification type for a small number of ramification points, and conjecture this to be true for an arbitrary number of ramification points. In addition, the conjecture is proved for simple coverings of the sphere by the torus. We obtain corresponding expressions for surfaces of higher genera for a small number of ramification points, and conjecture the general form for this number in terms of a symmetric polynomial that appears to be new. The approach involves the analysis of the action of a transposition to derive a system of linear partial differential equations that give the generating series for the desired numbers.

Heavy flavor decays, OPE and duality in two-Dimensional 't Hooft model

The 't Hooft model (two-dimensional QCD in the limit of large number of colors) is used as a laboratory for exploring various aspects of the heavy quark expansions in the nonleptonic and semileptonic decays of heavy flavors. We perform a complete operator analysis and construct the operator product expansion (OPE) up to terms O(1/m_Q^4), inclusively. The OPE-based predictions for the inclusive widths are then confronted with the "phenomenological" results, obtained by summation of all open exclusive decay channels, one by one. The summation is carried out analytically, by virtue of the 't Hooft equation. The two alternative expressions for the total widths match. We comment on the recent claim in the literature of a 1/m_Q correction to the total width which would be in clear conflict with the OPE result. The issue of duality violations both in the simplified setting of the 't Hooft model and in actual QCD is discussed. The amplitude of oscillating terms is estimated.

Connected components in the intersection of two open opposite Schubert cells in real complete flag manifold

In this paper we reduce the problem of counting the number of connected components in the intersection of two opposite open Schubert cells in the variety of real complete flags to a purely combinatorial question of counting the number of orbits of a certain intriguing group action in the space of upper triangular matrices with {0,1}-valued entries. The crucial step of our reduction uses the parametrization of the space of real unipotent totally positive upper triangular matrices introduced by Lusztig and Berenstein, Fomin, Zelevinski.

High Power n of m_b in Beauty Widths and n=5 -> oo Limit

The leading term in the semileptonic width of heavy flavor hadrons depends on the fifth power of the heavy quark mass. We present an analysis where this power can be self-consistently treated as a free parameter n and the width can be studied in the limit n -> oo. The resulting expansion elucidates why the small velocity (SV) treatment is relevant for the inclusive semileptonic b->c transition. The extended SV limit (ESV limit) is introduced. The leading terms in the perturbative alpha_s expansion enhanced by powers of n are automatically resummed by using the low-scale Euclidean mass. The large-n treatment explains why the scales of order m_b/n are appropriate. On the other hand, the scale cannot be too small since the factorially divergent perturbative corrections associated with running of alpha_s show up. Both requirements are met if we use the short-distance mass normalized at a scale around m_b/n \sim 1 GeV. A convenient definition of such low-scale OPE-compatible masses is briefly discussed.

Sum Rules for Heavy Flavor Transitions in the SV Limit

We show how sum rules for the weak decays of heavy flavor hadrons can be derived as the moments of spectral distributions in the small velocity (SV) limit. This systematic approach allows us to determine corrections to these sum rules, to obtain new sum rules and it provides us with a transparent physical interpretation; it also opens a new perspective on the notion of the heavy quark mass. Applying these sum rules we derive a lower bound on the deviation of the exclusive form factor $F_{B->D^*}$ from unity at zero recoil; likewise we give a field-theoretical derivation of a previously formulated inequality between the expectation value for the kinetic energy operator of the heavy quark and for the chromomagnetic operator. We analyze how the known results on nonperturbative corrections must be understood when one takes into account the normalization point dependence of the low scale parameters. Relation between the field-theoretic derivation of the sum rules and the quantum-mechanical approach is elucidated.

How to Measure Kinetic Energy of the Heavy Quark Inside B Mesons?

We discuss how one can determine the average kinetic energy of the heavy quark inside heavy mesons from differential distributions in $B$ decays. A new, so-called third, sum rule for the $b\rightarrow c$ transition is derived in the small velocity (SV) limit. Using this sum rule and the existing data on the momentum dependence in the $B\rightarrow D^*$ transition (the slope of the Isgur-Wise function) we obtain a new lower bound on the parameter $μ_π^2 = (2M_B)^{-1}\langle B |\bar b (i\vec{D})^2 b |B\rangle $ proportional to the average kinetic energy of $b$ quark inside $B$ meson. The existing data suggest $μ_π^2 > 0.4$~GeV$^2$ and (from the ``optical'' sum rule) $\overlineΛ > 500$ MeV, albeit with some numerical uncertainties.

$|V_{cb}|$ from OPE Sum Rules for Heavy Flavor Transitions

We derive a model-independent upper bound for the axial-vector form factor of the $B\ra D^*$ transition at zero recoil, $F_{B\ra D^*}$. The form factor turns out to be noticeably less than unity. The deviation of $F_{B\ra D^*}$ from unity is larger than previously anticipated. Using our estimate we extract $|V_{cb}|$ from the measured exclusive rate of $B\ra D^* lν$ extrapolated to the point of zero recoil. The central `` exclusive" value of $|V_{cb}|$ is in agreement with the value obtained from the inclusive semileptonic width $Γ(B\ra X_c lν)$. We argue that the theoretical uncertainty in determining $|V_{cb}|$ from the total inclusive width is significantly reduced if a constraint on the quark mass difference $m_b - m_c$ stemming from the heavy quark expansion is taken into account.
