Exploring $\alpha$- and $\beta$-decay-induced quenching of the $^{229}$Th nuclear-clock isomer in solid-state hosts

The radiative decay dynamics of an ensemble of $^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th nuclei embedded in CaF$_2$ and MgF$_2$ is investigated. The isomer is populated through $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac following ion implantation, and its radiative decay is detected using vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy and measured as a function of time. This allows to identify and quantify the quenching of the radiative-decay signal induced by $\alpha$ or $\beta$ radiation. The quenching probability density is determined in different CaF$_2$ crystals and in a MgF$_2$ crystal, revealing differences up to two orders of magnitude between the investigated samples and a strong dependence on the host material and defect densities. The results support a microscopic mechanism mediated by charge carriers in which electronic excitations created by the decay radiation are captured near Th defects, thereby favoring non-radiative decay channels.

Lattice location of ion-implanted 6He in diamond

The properties of He in diamond are of interest with respect to geological dating and the creation of color centers with possible quantum applications. We report on the lattice location of the short-lived ion implanted nuclear probe 6He (t1/2=807 ms) in diamond, which was performed using the beta emission channeling method at CERN's ISOLDE facility. 6He was implanted with 30 keV into a single-crystalline artificial diamond sample kept at a temperature ranging from 30 deg C up to 800 deg C. By means of comparing the measured emission channeling patterns along different crystallographic directions with simulated yields for a variety of possible sites, we conclude that the implanted 6He occupies tetrahedral (T) interstitial sites, in agreement with theoretical predictions that T sites should be the preferred position of He in diamond. Implantation at 800 deg C resulted in a drop in the tetrahedral interstitial fraction by 20%, which we interpret as the onset of diffusion, 6He thus being able to change to lattice sites of low crystallographic symmetry, or reach the surface of the sample or escape to the bulk during its lifetime. We estimate the activation energy for interstitial migration of He to be around 1.63-2.89 eV, which agrees with theoretical predictions of 1.41-2.36 eV from the literature. Activation energies around 2 eV would mean that simple interstitial He cannot be stable in diamond on geological time scales, thus to remain inside, it should be bound to some defect in the material or exist in another form such as within inclusions of other minerals or liquids, or possibly small He bubbles.

Radiative Decay of the $^{229m}$Th Nuclear Clock Isomer in Different Host Materials

A comparative vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy study conducted at ISOLDE-CERN of the radiative decay of the $^{229m}$Th nuclear clock isomer embedded in different host materials is reported. The ratio of the number of radiative decay photons and the number of $^{229m}$Th embedded are determined for single crystalline CaF$_2$, MgF$_2$, LiSrAlF$_6$, AlN, and amorphous SiO$_2$. For the latter two materials, no radiative decay signal was observed and an upper limit of the ratio is reported. The radiative decay wavelength was determined in LiSrAlF$_6$ and CaF$_2$, reducing its uncertainty by a factor of 2.5 relative to our previous measurement. This value is in agreement with the recently reported improved values from laser excitation.

An alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}$Th nuclear clock isomer

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $γ$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $β$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $α$-decay recoil source. In this paper, a feasibility analysis of this new concept, and an experimental investigation of its key ingredients, using a pure $^{229}$Ac ion beam produced at the ISOLDE radioactive beam facility, is reported.

Deposition and patterning of magnetic atom trap lattices in FePt films with periods down to 200nm

We report on the epitaxial growth and the characterization of thin FePt films and the subsequent patterning of magnetic lattice structures. These structures can be used to trap ultracold atoms for quantum simulation experiments. We use Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) to deposit monocrystalline FePt films with a thickness of 50 nm. The films are characterized with X-ray scattering and Mossbauer spectroscopy to determine the long range order parameter and the hard magnetic axes. A high monocrystalline fraction was measured as well as a strong remanent magnetization of M = 900 kA/m and coercivity of 0.4 T. Using Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) and argon ion milling we create lattice patterns with a period down to 200 nm, and a resolution of 30 nm. The resulting lattices are imaged in a Scanning Electron Microscope in cross-section created by a Focused Ion Beam. A lattice with continuously varying lattice constant ranging from 5 micrometer down to 250nm has been created to show the wide range of length scales that can now be created with this technique.

Dynamical properties of ordered Fe-Pt alloys

The structure, magnetic properties, and lattice dynamics of ordered Fe-Pt alloys with three stoichiometric compositions, Fe$_3$Pt, FePt and FePt$_3$, have been investigated using the density functional theory. Additionally, the existing experimental data have been complemented by new measurements of the Fe projected phonon density of states performed for the Fe$_3$Pt and FePt$_3$ thin films using the nuclear inelastic scattering technique. The calculated phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states have been compared with the experimental data. The dispersion curves are very well reproduced by the calculations, although, the softening of the transversal acoustic mode TA$_1$ leads to some discrepancy between the theory and experiment in Fe$_3$Pt. A very goood agreement between the measured spectra and calculations performed for the tetragonal structure derived from the soft mode may signal that the tetragonal phase with the space group $P4/mbm$ plays an important role in the martensitic transformation observed in Fe$_3$Pt. For FePt$_3$, the antiferromagnetic order appearing with decreasing temperature has been also investigated. The studies showed that the phonon density of states of FePt$_3$ very weakly depends on the magnetic configuration.

Comparison of the properties of GaN grown on complex Si-based structures

With the aim of investigating the possible integration of opto-electronic devices, epitaxial GaN layers have been grown on Si(111) SOI and on Si/CoSi2/Si(111) using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The samples are found to possess a highly oriented wurtzite structure, a uniform thickness and abrupt interfaces. The epitaxial orientation is determined as GaN(0001)//Si(111), GaN[1120]//Si[110] and GaN[1010]//Si[112], and the GaN layer is tensily strained in the direction parallel to the interface. According to Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry and (0002) rocking curves, the crystalline quality of GaN on Si(111) SOI is better than that of GaN on silicide. Room-temperature photoluminescence of GaN/SOI reveals a strong near-bandedge emission at 368 nm (3.37 eV) with an FWHM of 59 meV.
