Holstein model and Peierls instability in 1D boson-fermion lattice gases

We study an ultracold bose-fermi mixture in a one dimensional optical lattice. When boson atoms are heavier then fermion atoms the system is described by an adiabatic Holstein model, exhibiting a Peierls instability for commensurate fermion filling factors. A Bosonic density wave with a wavenumber of twice the Fermi wavenumber will appear in the quasi one-dimensional system.

On the conversion efficiency of ultracold fermionic atoms to bosonic molecules via Feshbach resonances

We explain why the experimental efficiency observed in the conversion of ultracold Fermi gases of $^{40}$K and $^{6}$Li atoms into diatomic Bose gases is limited to 0.5 when the Feshbach resonance sweep rate is sufficiently slow to pass adiabatically through the Landau Zener transition but faster than ``the collision rate'' in the gas, and increases beyond 0.5 when it is slower. The 0.5 efficiency limit is due to the preparation of a statistical mixture of two spin-states, required to enable s-wave scattering. By constructing the many-body state of the system we show that this preparation yields a mixture of even and odd parity pair-states, where only even parity can produce molecules. The odd parity spin-symmetric states must decorrelate before the constituent atoms can further Feshbach scatter thereby increasing the conversion efficiency; ``the collision rate'' is the pair decorrelation rate.

Boson-like quantum dynamics of association in ultracold Fermi gases

We study the collective association dynamics of a cold Fermi gas of $2N$ atoms in $M$ atomic modes into a single molecular bosonic mode. The many-body fermionic problem for $2^M$ amplitudes is effectively reduced to a dynamical system of $\min\{N,M\}+1$ amplitudes, making the solution no more complex than the solution of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate and allowing realistic calculations with up to $10^4$ particles. The many-body dynamics is shown to be formally similar to the dynamics of the bosonic system under the mapping of boson particles to fermion holes, producing collective enhancement effects due to many-particle constructive interference. Dissociation rates are shown to enhance as the number of particles whereas association rates are enhanced as the number of holes, leading to boson-like collective behavior.

Directional `superradiant' collisions: bosonic amplification of atom pairs emitted from an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate

We study spontaneous directionality in the bosonic amplification of atom pairs emitted from an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), an effect analogous to `superradiant' emission of atom-photon pairs. Using a simplified model, we make analytic predictions regarding directional effects for both atom-atom and atom-photon emission. These are confirmed by numerical mean-field simulations, demonstrating the the feasibility of nearly perfect directional emission along the condensate axis. The dependence of the emission angle on the pump strength for atom-atom pairs is significantly different than for atom-photon pairs.

Bose-enhanced chemistry: Amplification of selectivity in the dissociation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the photodissociation chemistry of a quantum degenerate gas of bosonic triatomic $ABC$ molecules, assuming two open rearrangement channels ($AB+C$ or $A+BC$). The equations of motion are equivalent to those of a parametric multimode laser, resulting in an exponential buildup of macroscopic mode populations. By exponentially amplifying a small differential in the single-particle rate-coefficients, Bose stimulation leads to a nearly complete selectivity of the collective $N$-body process, indicating a novel type of ultra-selective quantum degenerate chemistry.

Theory of laser catalysis with pulses

The possibility of accelerating molecular reactions by lasers has attracted considerable theoretical and experimental interest. A particular example of laser-modified reaction dynamics is laser catalysis, a process in which the tunneling through a potential barrier is enhanced by transient excitation to a bound electronic state. We have performed detailed calculations of pulsed laser catalysis on one- and two-dimensional potentials, as a function of the reactants' collision energy and the laser's central frequency. In agreement with previous CW results, the reactive lineshapes are Fano-type curves, resulting from interference between nonradiative tunneling and the optically assisted pathway. In contrast to the CW process, the power requirements of pulsed laser catalysis are well within the reach of commonly used pulsed laser sources, making an experimental realization possible. The laser catalysis scenario is shown to be equivalent in the ``dressed'' state picture, to resonant tunneling through a double-barrier potential, admitting perfect transmission when the incident energy matches a quasibound state of the well within the barriers. Possible applications for atom optics, solid-state devices, and scanning tunneling microscopy, are discussed.

Dynamics of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate beyond mean-field theory

We study the dynamics of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate in the vicinity of a mean-field dynamical instability. Convergence to mean-field theory (MFT), with increasing total number of particles $N$, is shown to be logarithmically slow. Using a density matrix formalism rather than the conventional wavefunction methods, we derive an improved set of equations of motion for the mean-field plus the fluctuations, which goes beyond MFT and provides accurate predictions for the leading quantum corrections and the quantum break time. We show that the leading quantum corrections appear as decoherence of the reduced single-particle quantum state; we also compare this phenomenon to the effects of thermal noise. Using the rapid dephasing near an instability, we propose a method for the direct measurement of scattering lengths.

Quantum effects on the dynamics of a two-mode atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the system of coupled atomic and molecular condensates within the two-mode model and beyond mean-field theory (MFT). Large amplitude atom-molecule coherent oscillations are shown to be damped by the rapid growth of fluctuations near the dynamically unstable molecular mode. This result contradicts earlier predictions about the recovery of atom-molecule oscillations in the two-mode limit. The frequency of the damped oscillation is also shown to scale as $\sqrt{N}/\log N$ with the total number of atoms $N$, rather than the expected pure $\sqrt{N}$ scaling. Using a linearized model, we obtain analytical expressions for the initial depletion of the molecular condensate in the vicinity of the instability, and show that the important effect neglected by mean field theory is an initially non-exponential `spontaneous' dissociation into the atomic vacuum. Starting with a small population in the atomic mode, the initial dissociation rate is sensitive to the exact atomic amplitudes, with the fastest (super-exponential) rate observed for the entangled state, formed by spontaneous dissociation.
