Random and universal metric spaces

We introduce a model of the set of all Polish (=separable complete metric) spaces: the cone $\cal R$ of distance matrices, and consider geometric and probabilistic problems connected with this object. The notion of the universal distance matrix is defined and we proved that the set of such matrices is everywhere dense $G_δ$ set in weak topology in the cone $\cal R$. Universality of distance matrix is the necessary and sufficient condition on the distance matrix of the countable everywhere dense set of so called universal Urysohn space which he had defined in 1924 in his last paper. This means that Urysohn space is generic in the set of all Polish spaces. Then we consider metric spaces with measures (metric triples) and define a complete invariant: its - matrix distribution. We give an intrinsic characterization of the set of matrix distributions, and using the ergodic theorem, give a new proof of Gromov's ``reconstruction theorem'. A natural construction of a wide class of measures on the cone $\cal R$ is given and for these we show that {\it with probability one a random Polish space is again the Urysohn space}. There is a close connection between these questions, metric classification of measurable functions of several arguments, and classification of the actions of the infinite symmetric group [V1,V2].

C*-Algebras of Irreversible Dynamical Systems

We show that certain C*-algebras which have been studied among others by Arzumanian, Vershik, Deaconu, and Renault in connection to a measure preserving transformation of a measure space and/or to a covering map of a compact space are special cases of the endomorphism crossed-product construction recently introduced by the first named author. As a consequence these algebras are given presentations in terms of generators and relations. These results come as a consequence of a general Theorem on faithfulness of representations which are covariant with respect to certain circle actions. For the case of topologically free covering maps we prove a stronger result on faithfulness of representations which needs no covariance. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicity.

Graded Lie Algebras and dynamical systems

The general class of the graded Lie algebras is defined. These algebras could be constructed using an arbitrary dynamical systems with discrete time and with invarinat measure. In this papers we consider the case of the central extension of Lie algebras which corresponds to the ordinary crossed product (as associative algebra) - series A. The structure of those Lie algebras is similar to Kac-Moody algebras, and these are a special case of so called algebras with continuous root system which were introduced by author with M.Saveliev in 90-th. The central extension open a new possibilty in algebraic theory of dynamical systems. The simpliest example corresponds to rotation of the circle (sine-algebra="quantum torus") and to adding of unity the additvie group of the p-adic integers.

Distance matrices, random metrics and Urysohn space

We introduce an universum of the Polish (=complete separable metric) space - the convex cone of distance matrices and study its geometry. It happened that the generic Polish spaces in this sense of this universum is so called Urysohn spaces defined by P.S.Urysohn in 20-th, and generic metric triple (= metric space with probability borel measure) is also Urysohn space with non-degenerated measure. We prove that the complete invariant of the metric space with measure up to measure preserving isometries is so called matrix distribution - invarinat and ergodic measure with respect to infinite symmetric group which is concentrated on the cone of distance matrices. This defined an important new class of random matrices and family of random metrics on the naturals.

Distinguished properties of the gamma process and related topics

We study fundamental properties of the gamma process and their relation to various topics such as Poisson-Dirichlet measures and stable processes. We prove the quasi-invariance of the gamma process with respect to a large group of linear transformations. We also show that it is a renormalized limit of the stable processes and has an equivalent sigma-finite measure (quasi-Lebesgue) with important invariance properties. New properties of the gamma process can be applied to the Poisson-Dirichlet measures. We also emphasize the deep similarity between the gamma process and the Brownian motion. The connection of the above topics makes more transparent some old and new facts about stable and gamma processes, and the Poisson-Dirichlet measures.
